"What Are 3 Things You Would Change About Hip Hop"

Last week I was at work talking to my teens about everything that's wrong with hip hop and one of 'em asked me what would I do to change the game. So for this episode of my mixshow podcast we're chopping it up about that topic. Now, this is in no way a show to dis the youth & what they're doing. I'm applying this to the hip hop we all know and love. And in case cats don't have time to peep the whole show and wanna get straight to the convo, skip to the 26:31 mark and you're good money.

Tracklisting
Sally's Got A One Track Mind - Diamond D
Where I'm From (Remix) - Digable Planets
Off and On - Trendz of Culture
Loud Hangover - Akineyle and Sadat X
Take That - Da Beatminerz feat. Flipmode Squad
O! - Da Beatminerz feat. J Live
Day One - D.I.T.C.
Troubled Man - Inspectah Deck (Produced by Pete Rock)
No Uniform - Camp Lo feat. M.O.P.
1-9-9-9 - Common feat. Sadat X
Serious - Nas & AZ
The Watch - Ghostface
Worldwide - Royal Flush
Down & Out - Camron
To Be Told - Roc Marciano
Bobby MC Bars - Sean Price
Every Ghetto - Talib Kweli feat. Rhapsody (Produced by Hi Tek)

So my question for cats is what are the 3 things ya'll would change about the game?

For me, the first thing I would do is put some type of cap on how much music comes out. I feel like entirely TOO much music comes out nowadays. It's like, I don't even get a second to let a song, let alone an album marinate with me long enough cause I got get onto the next album or single that dropped. Plus, all of the hype seems to be behind an album dropping but once it drops, a week to 2 later nobody's even talking about it anymore.

Next up and I know I'm dating myself with this one but the TV show "Alice" that used to be out back in the 80's about 3 waitresses who used to work at Mel's Diner and his whole thing was there was no moonlighting. And that would be something I changed. It's TOO many MC's out here nowadays that are doing 50 different things (acting, clothing line, sneakers, headphones, water, etc. etc.) so they can't concentrate on making dope music. I always tell cats that Stevie Wonder doesn't make Song In the Key of Life if he's acting, marketing his own brand of sunglasses and canes, hosting his own TV show, etc.

I'd want a rule where MC's have to rhyme on their own album and you can only either have 1 posse cut or only 2 MC's featured on your entire album. It's WAY too many MC's who drop an album with 18 cuts and EVERY SONG features 2 other MC's which is a nutshell in my eyes means this really ain't YOUR album cause your basically in a group cause you only have to come up with one 16 per track vs. coming up with your own 48 per track.

Because even on the greatest records by the greatest emcees, if one rapper does 3 verses, there's always "verse A is perfect, verse B is dope, verse C is ok". I've heard a lot that rappers nowadays are lazy, because nobody raps 3 verses on a song anymore...but why do that when one is bound to get dismissed?

I don't know about verses getting weaker...MC's just knew they had to bring it everytime thet got on the mic. I mean, what verse of BIG's was wack on Kick in the Door, Unbelievable or Warning? What verse wack on Jay's Dead President, D'Evils, Can I Live or Streets is Watching? What about Nas on NY state of Mind, Nas Is Like or 2nd Childhood? None...MC's used to bring it on each verse and now they don't feel like they can so they dumb out on one verse and let their friends finish the rest.

and I'm not saying those songs had wack verses. I'm saying that nearly every rap song with 3 verses from 1 rapper, when and ONLY* when being analyzed by rap heads and critics, has a strongest verse, a good verse, and a verse that is ignored or deemed unnecessary.
I generally agree with what you're saying about features, but I always thought the 3 Verse Rule was a strange one, when used in conjunction with what I always perceived as the 2 Dope Verse (By One MC) Cap.
*It's kinda like how we say Illmatic is flawless when we compare it to other albums...but when having a conversation specifically about Illmatic, we say, "well, they coulda kept 'One Time 4 Your Mind' off the record, it was the wrong tempo and he sounds kinda corny on it".

Even if you do two verses a track, just cut back on all the features. Most rap albums are like compilations nowadays

I think this is partly "Internet to blame" type shit. but after the '00s... everyone, everywhere tried to sound like the "South" in a way that cats weren't trying to sound like "New York" prior to the '90s

I'm glad that regionalism is sort of coming back ... with certain artists. Mostly West Coast artists. I can't see Odd Future and 'em and Kendrick making that kind of music being from anywhere but in/around LA.

and Joey Badass deserves a Medal of Honor for flying the middle finger at the last decade of "New York" rap. it isn't just the beats, the style of rapping had gotten so region-free that it was hard to tell who was from where.

sound like Screw. As for Little Brother, Carolina has never had a distinct sound, and they've always catered more to the East's sound....think about J. Cole as well.

It also makes you wonder what happens to the Pharcyde types...or the Souls of Mischief/Hiero groups in California who never had a typical G-Funk sound...YET, their beats still felt breezier than the Boom Bap of the East.

There'd be no Manolo Rose if hip-hop wasn't allowed to grow. If the 90's never end then why should radio support young artists? Think about it: if these young artists are not allowed to establish their own identity then how can hip-hop continue to push boundaries if everyone sounds the same as their predecessors?

They were the first region who veered away from their traditional sound and made "south sounding" beats. The west and south have always stayed true to their original sound for the most part...

They lost market share to the west and south and instead of making dope music to get back on top their artists put out trash to get mainstream popularity instead. Ja Rule, Funkmaster Flex, Jay-Z, Fat Joe, Puffy are the main ones to blame...

There was so much more diversity in what the radio played in the 90s. I go back to some of the tapes I recorded from the radio when I was in middle school and I'm like - shit, this was such a better world. Haha.

If an album had a dope song...that was a single. No matter if it sounds like what's already in rotation or not. Special and different songs get made today but usually are never singles and get videos anymore.

3. shut down all clubs every other year

yeaaaa...

1. 808s turned the game in a whole new direction.. easily the most influential album for 2010s hip hop.. yuck. not a fan of what's happened.. basically a new genre, which is cool, but all the mumbling, off-tune "singing," kindergarten "rhymes" and basically anyone who sold a decent amount of drugs or ran enough credit card scams can get in the game and think they sound cool..

2. writing has declined crazy since these kids stopped feeling the need to use a pen and pad and put more than 15 min. into writing a verse.. i know it's working for people, but i'm not a fan.. i pretty much blame jay's comments for this lol.. fairly or unfairly

3. as far as the club thing, that was more in jest than the other 2, but i'd like to hear some people make some music not just for the club.. when i ask people why a song is hot, it's because the clubs go crazy to it, which i'm 100% cool with.. shit just seems dumber than it used to be (could def. be me getting older, or just drugs of choice that i'm not into.. give me something that sounds good on mushrooms).. but i live in miami, so i'm not serious about closing any clubs lol

I don't care if Erick Sermon, Pharoahe Monch, or Phonte did it or does it, I've had enough kats singing more than they rap and it usually be the wackest shit ever; let a singer sing, shit T-Pain be rapping more than rappers do.

27. "Every young artist has to create a EP inspired by their influences."
In response to Reply # 0

That shows the hip-hop world they understand the craft. This allows the younger generation to learn more about those that came before them and actually helps my third point.

Every mainstream artist has to release an EP with a producer outside of their region once per year. This helps broaden the palate of the region they originate from and helps fans discover new producers.

Hip-hop fans support a legacy platform that allows artists from 20 years past to maintain relevancy via touring and radio support. This allows us to have the Rolling Stones and legacy acts of hip-hop. This also means that respect is given to those who paved the way for the culture.

1. No more commercial singles or a song for the club, the girls, the radio and then heads are left with 1-2 songs.
2. No more value meal producers...1 from Swizz, 2 from Timbaland, 1 from Just Blaze, 1 from Kanye (or who ever's producing for Kanye today), etc. etc.
3. Like E said on the show...BRING BACK THE DJ!!!!!!!!

The misogyny in hip hop is the only thing that I really struggle to understand or expain in any way. The violence, the drugs, the emphasis on money. I feel like I get those, but the seeming hatred of women, even in the best of hip hop from the most progressive artists in some cases, always puzzled me.

You all need to just start listening to artists outside your usual box.

In response to Reply # 41

Gospel hip hop is a small subset of rap music. I don't have a box. Do I listen to every hip hop artist. No. Do I listen to every type, I can honestly say yes.

I've listened to lecrae, phanatic, ambassador, theory hazit, and more. The fact is one shouldn't have to listen exclusively to the religious variety of a type of music to avoid strongly misogynist messages.

I'm not talking about thug rappers. Yeah you get it from biggie, PAC, nas, mobb deep, but also from common, outcast, mos def, tribe. Even artists that people might champion like j Cole or Kendrick say some foul stuff about women in their songs.

I think you have to be turning a blind eye to not see that by and large hip hop is either ignoring women or disrespecting them. Even the Christian rap I listen to doesn't really talk about women or relationships in anything other than an accusatory light.

I just think hip hop has a real lack of positivity when it comes to women.

1. More diversity in terms of sound, subject matter, look, and more female rappers.

2. Return of the soul samples. I feel like soul samples make the best hip hop beats

3. More focus on making dope albums, and having BARS. Right now there's too many mumble mouth nonsensical rappers in the game.
