"Drake & Future : What a Time to Be Alive"

Wow. Drake is really making the most out of his Beats 1 radio show and Apple Music in general. Are You guys listening to this stream of his new album with Future.

What are your thoughts? I'm not a Future fan and that hasn't changed after listening to this. If anything this project makes Drake sound more repetitive than I'm used to.

I NEED substance.
and for some reason that puts me at odds with most consumers of music these days.

Umm... to have at least a somewhat informed opinion. The hype around this album is massive... So, if I've got an hour to kill might as well check it out.

The sales from wave(s), TPAB, and Deeply Rooted (all albums that I dig) combined aren't even close to what IYRTITL has sold... so yeah... I think that does kinda put me at odds. Mick and Brad ain't selling like that. Kendrick is the number 2 selling rap album of the year but is way behind Drake.

Most folks don't care about substance. I don't think that can be argued.

sales dont matter because quality music is in excess right now
why does that put you at odds?
you supporting the artist you like?
just went to a Face show with backyard band and shit was trill

Drake was almost like chaser for Future's approach for me here. For the longest time I just didn't understand the appeal, but I feel like I "get it" now. Metro Boomin also went absolutely nuts

When this was rumored I was thinking I way not like it...I'm not the biggest Future fan, and he might bring out the worst version of Drake...The shit talking,I got goons and they'll shoot you Drake. I don't expect much (their version of) substance, but something creative and not all lean fueled would be nice.

The first 3 songs made me feel like I was right. Big Rings in particular is terrible, but by Dancing Diamonds (which I think is the hit on here) things pick up.

The project actually has a vibe, sounds more like a Drake project than a Future.

I like that it doesn't there's some chemistry to the songs, there isn't much

Future Verse
Hook
Drake Verse
Hook Out

here. Sounds like an EP instead of a mixtape.

Whole hood will be saying Jumpman over and over for the next couple weeks.

Drake killed 30 for 30. If you put together of all of his "freestyle" type of tracks you got a good collection of songs.

Actually better

Hate on him or not, for his fanbase Future's dropped 3 projects in 2015 of solid quality, and with this will have two number one albums in 2015. Respect the work ethic, even if you think it's doo doo.

While it really is a Future mixtape that Drake hopped on, it works better then I thought. Diamond's Dancing is the perfect mix of both artists respective emo, and I expect it to be something that's gonna be played loud from passing by cars well into 2016.

In response to Reply # 17

I agree with this

Their audience has a contemporary approach to language that means their lyrics are going to be broken down and disseminated as they see fit; paired with incongruous images, strange vines, and subtweets. Through mediums like Twitter, new denotations of phrases are born; see “Hotline Bling” which has spawned a thousand tweets, videos and Instagram posts. Many of these are done in semi-ironic fashion but that’s inconsequential; people are engaging with the material, sharing and spreading it. Meme is the dream.

but its obviously he doesn't like Future/Drake, and ignores that Future's rise wasn't based on memes.

It's also funny he includes J.Cole on his short list of 'good' rappers not realizing that Cole kind of follows the same line as Drake as leveraging his userbase into basically online street teams.

This is also kind of a fucking funny troll line considering the album hasn't been out yet:

"t’s noticeable that in the short time since the mixtape has been out, there has been almost no reviews, nearly all of the response has been in memes."

Its noticeable that an album that comes out 8pm on a sunday night doesn't have reviews up by monday morning? lol.

i've listened to twice as much future as drake in the past year. i couldnt ask for a more desirable team up right now unless future and thug made a tape.

majority of the production is from Future's camp...

40 only did one song on it...and Future wasn't even on that...

Being that Future was always doing low key Drake/1da type melodies its really hard to say Future and Metro are sonically controlling this project. Workload wise yeah Metro via Future is in control of it..clearly. But who shines on this is Drake and Metro. I really like Future on this project but those 2 guys stand out way more to me.

People really want to believe Drake added his vocals to the project against Future's will.

when outside of YMCMB/OVO, Future has probably been Drake's most consistent collaborative partner other than Ross. they even had they lil business spats out and still stayed tight.

i know Future is the writers darling right now but they aint gotta lie and make shit up.

it's respect hip hop and support legends in the game when there are still people on this board discussing the album in a thread thats not anchored lol

i don't see this board getting any more popular on the internet just for discussing popular music or trying to attract a "younger audience"

but good for them dudes for linking up because I bet a strong case could be made for saying they have the same, and a really supportive fan base

not really up on Future other than singles, and IYRTITL was cool

album starts of kind of strong, gets weak, then picks up again at the end. it's good but not amazing. it does feel a little like some DS2 leftovers with drake tacked on plus a few drake-friendly tracks. this was supposedly recorded in a week or so but i'm not sure more time would have changed anything. i think drake and future's recording processes are too different for this to have worked really well

i hear drake trying to do the pithy one-liner amidst strings of triplets thing on some of these tracks but it rarely works. it sounds like he's trying to straight up imitate future on "jumpman," which doesn't work at all, and then future comes in and shows him how it's done. many times it sounds like drake is trying to compete with the beat. i think it's his voice. it's not suited for the more aggressive beats. however he sounds amazing on "plastic bag" and "change locations"

not much to say about future on this. he's doing the thing he does at a high level, but not as high as he did on DS2. i don't immediately recall any particularly memorable lines after one listen. he does sound very good over every single track he's on though

did someone give metro boomin the the aphex twin discography just before he made these beats? the serene, almost ambient melodies and sounds juxtaposed with the generally aggressive percussion evoke the richard d james album in my mind. "big rings" in particular reminds me of "boy/girl song." "jumpman" is completely fucking bonkers. metro boomin is probably the best producer working right now

overall pretty good but mostly disposable. "plastic bag" and "jumpman" are amazing. most everything else is serviceable. nothing is really bad. definitely an enjoyable listen, if only for the spectacle

outside jumpmam, it all kinda sounds the same, but damn metro's bass lines are so fierce they keep me listening for longer than I normally would

and I been bumping "if you reading this..." and DS2 like a mug this year

but this is meh
