It's nothing personal. You're not the first. It's just that the album hasn't even been out a damn week. It's impossible to have an intellectually honest/appropriate discussion comparing it to any album this soon, ESPECIALLY not a masterpiece from the same artist released sixteen years ago. It just can't be done.

I just get agitated with these types of posts because the discussion seems so futile to me. The album is five days old.

Anyway there are some people who will definitely engage you, so I shouldn't have been such an asshole about it haha. My bad. But have at it. I'll try and keep quiet.

rate albums 5 stars on iTunes before they even come out with a comment like "it's Dre...you already know it's gonna be classic!"

in fact, i'm not even impressed with "compton"
i haven't listened to it since the very first night it came out because honestly i was let down but i'm about to listen to it again to see if i feel any differently about it

i don't know if i'm just stuck in the past and can't move on from the nostalgia of "2001" or if "compton" really ain't all it's cracked up to be but i'm interested in playing both albums back to back to see what i think.

On top of him having made 4 completely different sounding albums. There's no real fair comparison.

...to think about how I felt about "2001" in late November 1999 vs. "Compton" today.

the latter immediately grabbed me. been listening at least twice a day since Friday.

"2001" didn't hit me until summer of 2000. in late 99, I was not a fan of the album. at all. it had to simmer so I could listen without all the immediate "still DRE" and "forgot about dre" hype. I pretty much "forgot about 2001" until dre and co toured in the summer.

btw, I didn't vote...yet.

Most of it, anyway. I felt then like I do now. The first half of it was great, but then the 2nd half of it you could've cut 3-4 of those tracks. Still D.R.E, Exxxplosive, Next Episode, Fuck You, What's The Difference, etc. all knocked right away to me.

I've only listened a few times, but I have little desire to go back to Compton, except for maybe 1-2 songs(Animals and For the Love of Money). It's really the vocals I can't get past. Dre sounds ridiculous.

me in the way that a lot of other albums did at the time. Yet, even a year later, it sounded better than all of those albums. I don't think it had that initial "OMG!!!!" excitement to it on first listen. I remember "Xxplosive" coming on and saying "oh this cool." Nothing on there was catching me until the 3rd or 4th listen.

It came out the same time that Kurupt's "Streetz is a mutha" dropped, and at first, I was saying "Streetz" was a better album. "Girls all pause" was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY harder than anything on 2001 at that time, in my mind. Even at the parties in L.A, it got way better reaction than anything Dre had at first. But by Summer 2000, "Let's get high" was IT, and "Girls all pause" had played out.

I mean, I get what everyone else is saying about it being too soon to compare, 16 years, etc., but "2001" wasn't an album I got in to that much. I don't think I've played that album in probably 14, 15 years. The hits are classic and I feel like I hear at least one of them every week or so...and I'm not mad about it, but overall Dre from that era wasn't my thing. Would be interesting to see how I respond today so far removed from it's original release and where I was at during that time.

"Compton" might fade away just as quickly, but production-wise I'm on board, which is something I haven't said for anything Dre-related in close to 2 decades.

the highs are higher than those on Compton but i like more of the songs on Compton compared to 2001.

i find 2001 unlistenable except for the classic tracks - Still DRE, Xxplosive, Next Episode, Forgot About Dre. but i haven't heard the album in a few yrs.

Lol

LGH is cute until that chant ends and then I'm done with it. Outside of the 4 classic tracks on 2001 I don't recall having much use for the rest of it - including LGH. I kinda dig Ackrite and I like the line 'You can't make a ho a housewife'. I haven't heard 2001 all the way in more than 10 years bc there aren't enough tracks on it that are relevant to my interests.

My main beef is that I felt like Dre settled when it came to the production side of things. When I saw that he started using some trap elements in some of the songs, it kind of brought a frown to my face. To me, it's like he gave in and tried to ride the wave of what's hot at this moment rather than be the Dre that I've always admired and carve his own lane.

And, the problem really comes when he makes a trap track that isn't as good as what these other young bols are doing with it.

I was really hoping to hear something that was forward thinking and left of what everyone else is doing.

I think he gave in to his record executive side too much on this one.

The track he did for the remix of Marsha's Stronger BODIES every beat on this album:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu7pfcy1cJI

I know that he probably oversaw most of the production on this album although the tracks themselves are produced by a laundry list of producers, BUT, it would have been a better listen if it was maybe just Dre and two other producers handling everything rather than the mixtape feel that I get from the album.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

Yes, it uses the Come Clean beat, but it's not just a straight jack. It's well put together and I like the movement from Dre's verse to the main track.

Is just Come Clean and Stronger Than Pride?

Did you ACTUALLY listen to the track or just the intro?

Did you hear the pianos, the strings, the synth sounds added during that section?

Seriously, sometimes ya'll just want to hate.

Recognize when you're the only one impressed.

So they added some strings and pianos over the top of Come Clean that line up with Stronger Than Pride. That's not something that "BODIES" every beat on an album...and I haven't even heard Compton past the snippets.

And change your sig...that shit is old and stupid to begin with.

Ok. But I will always defend my point even if it's me against a million. Just because everyone else has a differing opinion will never make me hop on their side.

If that was my nature, I wouldn't last a day around here, much less 16 years.

And right here you start with that passive aggressive nonsense. First you come in here making it seem like you're trying to assuage my heated response and then you take a jab.

I ain't changing SHIT. Especially not because you said to. Try that nonsense with one of these other young bols on here.

You ain't nobody's daddy round here, bruh.

You're just begrudging the boy cause I stood up against you in Brew's favor in the freestyle post.

I could give a fuck if you stood up for your little brother in the other post. This has nothing to do with that post. And you can't think I seriously meant for you to change your sig or thought you would do so. It's simply the way I expressed the fact your shit sucks. That's it. For real bro.

You don't know me for shit.

I'm been cool with you on here regardless if we've disagreed.

Let's not go back in time when we've had these same back and forth in which you end up admitting that you were being too sensitive.

So save the personal attacks.

The facts of this are as follows;

You said Em's freestyle verse was "funny and dope"

I asked if you thought rape jokes were funny.

And then you got sensitive because you knew damn well you slipped up with the broad ignorant stance on his verse which in fact contained rape jokes.

Instead of resolving the foot in your mouth, you and this dude Remedial attempted to attack me and act as if I should overlook the rape joke and accept the entire verse of Em saying absolutely nothing.

Furthermore, you also attempted to turn it into "me not liking Em" when I clearly stated it was about the rape joke and named other MCs who I did not agree with.

Also, maybe I have someone close to me who was raped and had to deal with the shit you take as a fucking joke. But you never thought of that huh? Maybe that's why when I see someone taking the shit lightly, I could fuck you up like I would the person who did the shit.

Then we'll start from there.

Until then, we're stuck at your sad attempt to make this about me and my opinion about Eminem.

There is nothing more to this entire back and forth.

And to think it started with your admission of finding rape jokes funny.

You still haven't addressed that.

But keep dodging.

And, I'm NOT going to do that because I like it. Period. No one's going to like everything "I" like and I'm fine with that. But, I'm not going to change my mind because everyone else has a differing opinion. Simple. You think you have some kind of mental fortitude that surpasses everyone else's where you can convince someone to take an L.

See. From the first sentence you exhibit your saltiness. I don't know Brew from George. I simply disagreed with the way you handled things and expressed that. If you think these forums are solely for folks who agree with you in totality, then, good luck with that.

Son, VERBATIM, you said, "And change your sig...that shit is old and stupid to begin with." So, then, you just run around here saying stuff to irk people. You call someone's personal SIGNATURE stupid and then, when they retort, you attempt to tell them that they are OVERREACTING because you were MERELY expressing yourself?! That's what you wake up and do with your day? And YOU accuse other folks of backpedaling? Stand behind your words.

And, there you go once again making your OPINIONS fact and everyone else's moot. I guess you're the final say on all things round these parts. Maybe we should check with you first before we post anything.

You're a walking contradiction bro. I ain't indulging you anymore, mehn. You're obviously salty and are trying to find any way to TRY to make me feel some type of way. I don't internet troll and never have. Plus, I hear hanging with trolls gives you fleas. I'll let you rule the moat.

Does that NOT make it a hot track? Also, there are PLENTY other elements in the track just than strings.

here's my problem.. Dre takes an all time CLASSIC beat. A beat that is essentially PERFECT. Then he covers it in icing, sprinkles, little candy bits, pieces of captain crunch, hot fudge, caramel and whipped cream..

thats some shit that makes me wanna vomit..

It's a beautiful thing when MEN can agree to disagree and keep it moving.

Wish other cats round here could do the same rather than "lol'ing" and "smh'ing" all over the cot damn place like those words are supposed to automatically convey an L when used in a condescending manner.

Wonder if in debate clubs these days cats can "lol", "smh", "na na boo boo" their way into a victory rather than following up their position with facts. Maybe personal attacks will do the trick if those fail.

Just venting. Not directed at you in any way.

Nah I feel you. It irks me too but kinda just makes it clear who isn't worth discussing anything with.

As a big fan, I was blown away by how little I enjoyed the new album.

A friend of mine said to me, "It's not all bad! Kendrick has some good lines!" I was like, "If the best thing you can say about an album is that a guest rapper has some good lines..." lol

It would have worked great as a mixtape because it has that mixtape feel.

The one beat that I really like, which is the first beat on Loose Cannons, got switched up after one verse, never really allowing me to get a good groove going.

It just feels like one of those projects where there were too many hands in the pot.

The production was dope to me. The lack of standout talent is what keeps it from having that magic IMO. None of the new guys blew my mind.

Compton is the type of album I would value more: I like more thoughtful/purposeful lyrics, and I like elaborate production like that. But 2001 takes the "Keep It Simple Stupid" formula and really kills it. Not much versatility topically, but everything it does, it does really well. Compton feels a little disjointed at times where 2001 doesn't
