"Hiphop One Album Wonders you loved"

I used to love the hell out of this album:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7yyMxg-has

Actually, didn't even remember the Big L features, mainly Warren G, Nate Dogg, Eiht and Breed. And these guys from Michigan put out an entirely West Coast feeling album and it was really damn good.

Another one, Blow Dem Hoez Up was on repeat, was legitimately scared for Axl Rose's life haha

Perfect in the car music on a sunny day. BTW, it's a different Big L. Not Harlem Big L, but Flint Big L.

I've put out quite a few more since then, but you can never recreate those early years. I continued the Fresh Out series into my first couple years of college - I think there were five volumes total.

Hope all is well in your world, man.

Even though I haven't listened to it in a long while but I remember it being worthy of listening to from beginning to end, it had great rhymes with storylines thru-out, beats were amazing to just banging.

Like someone said, it was the album people were expecting Mic Geronimo to make; I even got to meet him when his was promoting the album, a real down to earth kat, me & a few others were telling him how dope his album was and he was like "naw mane, it's okay, just a good collection of songs, but thanks for liking it", and very modest kat.

He had dope singles after dope singles, they only thing that fucked up was the "Rotten Apple" single which never was put on the album cause of a sample clearance, Ez Elpee sampled (I think) Billy Joel and for clearance you had to ask him directly and since the song was dissing cops, Billy wouldn't clear any song with negative comments about NYC's finest...NYPD.

It's funny cause back then I was still going through a backpacker phase. This guy was rapping about drug dealing, chains, cars, partying etc. but first and foremost he was still an MC.

Because Epic Records wouldn't release an album by someone calling himself Kokane. But it's him. And it's dope.

Pretty much derailed by having to change their name. Willie Evans Jr. and Paten Locke still put out solo heat though. Hoping they eventually reform to drop another one.

Didn't even want to say it because the term "one album wonders" seems disrespectful to who they are and what they do.

But I know those dudes, it was always a solo thing for them and they just happened to form a group that got relatively more shine.

The times I've met Willie Evans and Paten they've been nothing but cool. And I know they basically built the Jacksonville scene.

I do wish we'd get more music from them. Like, at least the Dumbtron album. Or another Willie Evans or Paten solo shot. Or a group album. Give me something, please.

I got the feeling from some tweets a while back that they had older sh!t (before And now..) that I don't know about.

Also a Will Ev album that predates that Rawkus 50 one...

So if anyone could shed any light (and links or inboxes) I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've heard two songs: "Do It" and "Vaughn", but it wasn't until years later that I knew what they were from.

I think there's a Smile Rays album that pre-dates the Rawkus 50 jawn as well.

AGREED! Really more of an EP but Siah last I heard lives in Isreal and stopped rapping (I was actually in the studio when he did the single "Pyrite") but this is an underground jewel.

Ya. I remember it was a really dope studio around the corner from the old Priority/Duckdown offices. It had a grand piano in the recording room. Jon Adler told me the studio was mainly used for "radio commercials"

It's a great, great album. I Self kills it.

The only thing that stopped me from posting was how we definte "one album wonder," 'cause I Self has a few solo albums and a bunch as part of the Micranots. But hey, I posted the Asamov album, so I guess this works. Regardless, it's the best album I Self has been involved with.

I really, really wanted follow up albums from them.

I think Threat got his money from ghost-writing for the entire West Coast mainstream in the '90s. Never clear what happened to Trendz.

In response to Reply # 63

To me their second album "God Sound" was waaaaay better than their first album "Riders Of The Strom", personally I hated that album, couldn't get into at all, they had a few songs but the album was boring as hell, I remember finding my copy of the cd I bought when it came out and sold it a few years ago for $20.

When the second album came out they dropped two memebers; "God Sound" probably got heavy rotation from me for about six months when it dropped, I bet some didn't realize they didn't curse thru the album at all, some were calling them Gospel-Hip-Hop artists cause of the content (ex: songs like "Beginning To End", "Mark Of The Beast", "And Then What", and "Sodom & Gomorrah") but to me it was just great to hear rappers go into that vibe again with knowledge-rap stuff.

I preferred God Sound to the 1st too..

Yea they dropped 2 members but Mondo was wack as fuck.. the
album really coulda been a solo cus Vex da Vortex carried the whole thing, and quite impressively.

plus it was during that era where cats were spittin about the
end of times, new world order,etc.. so my ears was peeled for that kind of thing, and Vex pulled it off well.

God Sound and Gravity dropped around the same time, with both groups
having similar style & content, so I tend to play both together

Cloud 9 is his 2nd album, and it has one of the greatest samples I've ever heard... The song is called "Make Or Take". The album was pretty solid.

"Metropolis Gold" had dope shit from beginning to end, had production from Pete Rock, Dj Premier, Rockwilder, Ez Elpee, and etc., their rhymes wasn't top notch but they could rhyme, the lyrics were cool, their subject matter was good enough to have a well-rounded album.

I just wish that they put the original version of "Move On You" but I that's what happens when you come across sample clearances.

K-Def did his thing on that album. Marley Marl even produced a couple tracks, too.

...he showed his ass off on that album, all the beats were crazy, especially the interludes, and don't forget the entro, way crazy.

K-Def was another one of those Marley Marl students who just made crazy ass beats, like Pete Rock & Salaam Remi, they all had their own style but kept it funky with the production.

Too bad I heard straight from a label head of Atlantic/Big Beat that "The Turnaround" wasn't suppose to come out, they was ready to drop Real Live a year before the album came out but the only reason why it did get released cause of their manager had a clause that if the album was completed, they had to put it out instead of shelving it (which Atlantic really really wanted to do).

That same year I remember meeting Masta Ace while he was promoting his wife's Lescha, and I asked him what he was planning on doing for his 4th album, he said he might sing with Big Beat for a solo album without INC., and I told him dude don't do it unless you plan on being the next Lil Kim cause they wasn't promoting Artifacts and never dropped anything else from Man Digga, and told him to go with another label and not (WEA nor Big Beat).
