"what are the essential west coast albums?"

not by snoop, dre, cube or quik?

seeing as the weather's warm and bright i've been in a west
coast mood. what are the albums/songs i should be checking for?
preferably g-funk-styled stuff with that high-pitched synth.

all suggestions are appreciated.

cheers

Forever Changes, Da Capo and Love!!!
Captain Beefheart-Safe as milk and strictly personal (I'm excluding the "weird ones", fuck it:Trout mask replica!!!), Clear Spot, Spotlight kid
Moby Grape-st (what a perfect slice of rock that record is...)
Sly and the family stone.just throw the whole disco up to "small talk" in there
the Byrds-EVERYTHING between 65-68
Buffalo Springfield-debut, "Again"
the Seeds-Web of sound, future seeds
Jefferson Airplane-Surrealistic Pillow
Quicksilver wankmeisters-debut
Crosby, Stills, nash(Young)-debut, deja vu
Tim Buckley-Happy/sad,Blue Afternoon
Zappa and the assholes-Uncle Meat, Hot Rats, Freak Out
Residents-Meet the residents
Chrome-fuck it, the whole discography under the condition tht Helios Creed is there; the euro-goth shit is NOT Chrome(tm) regarless of whatg the covers say
Black Flag-First four years, damaged, my war
X-Los Angeles
Tuxedo Moon-Half Mute, desire

Ice Cube-AMW, DC
Dr Dre-the Chronic
Snoop-Doggystyle
Pharcyde-Bizarre ride
Alkaholiks-21 and over, Coast II Coast
Saafir-Boxcar sessions

,,,and I'm getting bored and I just realized I forgot Lollipop Shoppe and Peanut Butter Conspiracy and a gazillion hip-hop acts and blah-blah; basically, this pst will never be more than half-assed...

I guess the core point is that the us west-coast-from my total outsider perspective-has nothing to be ashamed of...

That said, I'm more of a NYC guy, both musically *and* from visiting both places a while; not having a drivers license in LA doesn't really work me thinks whereas it makes sense in NYC and the whole vibe of NYC was always more "relateable" to me so to speak, Boston was where I felt most at hme though but that city barely felt like USA to me, LOL!!!...

EDIT:Beach Boys have made more great albums than most acknowledge beyond Pet Sounds/Smile:All Summer long, Today (second side=just as good as Pet Sounds), Smiley Smile (the Quintessential whimsy lo-fi record), Sunflower (=the opposite) , Friends and so on...

the beauty is sO all-encompassing; how can the mop tops compare in terms of emotional resonance? I just don't hear it in the Beatles music...

I've been meaning to get into E-40 for awhile now after hearing a long interview with him on some podcast. Thanks to his workaholic tendencies I had no idea where to begin. Appreciate the recommendation.

Absolute classic, talks about a lot of every day social issues in the hood. Coolio is a member of the group before he was corny and production is by Sir Jinx. This is probably in my top 2 CD's of all time...
