I always remember this. That long note Leroi stays on at the start of his solo is more powerful than 100 notes from so many other players.

Rest in peace Leroi

Dave should give Tori an award or something for the number of exceptional performances she put on there...

Don't have time to link stuff up right now, but one of my favs is Father Lucifer --- gutsy, too, because it's just her, her piano, and a synth in the background. Her performance of Crucify was one of her first major television appearances (might have been her very first?). After that, she was appearing virtually every year or two in support of her albums. And even as she grew into more of a cult figure post-To Venus and Back (or thereabouts), it's to Dave and the network's credit that they consistently welcomed her back.

Tom Waits' "Time" in support of Strange Little Girls. Spark and Jackie's Strength in support of from the choirgirl. List goes on and on, and every performance is solid.

we just did a feature on him for Billboard & asked him to name his top 5 musical performances of the last 33 years - his picks all came between 82-85

like really? 33 years and hasn't been shit that touched a high watermark since 85? not a single new-ish group blew you away in the 90s? or the 00s?

at any rate - his top 5 were (no partic. order)
james brown in 82
john helliwell in 82
carole king in 82
sly stone in 83
clapton in 85
