"Does Jay-Z have a song as epic as Quietstorm?"

I was at the 20th Anniversary concert for Mobb Deep last night and when Quietstorm came on I wanted to punch the people next to me dead in the face. I remember when I first heard that song in the club I broke some girls nail because I started going wild and just lost it. That song is just a work of beauty. It's as if P is just giving a state of the union type address on that joint. It got me thinking if Jay has anything similar. I'm talking where he's just talking directly to the people in a way that makes takes you directly into his zone.

What say you?

Also the production on Quietstorm should get more respect. It's a great example of less is more. And the solo Prodigy version is the one I'm talking about.

I can play his album cuts and get reaction, especially with certain crowds. And for him to not have a single Twerk type song...closest being tracks like "Give it to me"...wild that he has so many songs that end up getting club/festival love. I actually didn't download "PSA" at first because it said "Interlude" and I was on a slow college modem, SMH. I heard it and said....oh!

Speaking of, PSA might be the closest to "Quiet storm" but it can get a lot of crowds even more hype. Especially the club head crowds, more so than the Hip Hop crowds.

but I wouldn't just say Jay has "hits" commercially, but bangers in the way that you can play them for large crowds and get a "rap every word" reaction to it all.

"Streets is Watching" is gutter, but not uptempo. "You Don't Know" feels gutter and epic, but again, not uptempo. I could imagine socking someone in the face while listening to it though.

"PSA" has already been mentioned, but not uptempo. "Friend of Doe 98" fits the description, but it's an album cut and a story rhyme at that. Possibly "So Ghetto." I'd say "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" and "Jigga What? Jigga Who?" definitely feel epic, but in a very different way than "Quiet Storm."

"4 Alarm Blaze" with MOP is a good candidate, but that's really on MOP track.

Just stating the inspiration for the post. That said I forgot how much I love Mobb Deep. When the world was waiting for Murder Muzik to drop and all we had were the many versions of the bootleg it was a good time to be alive. I also forgot that Alchemist should have people kneel to him in the streets for The Realest. That song is...MY GOD.

But shout out to 112 sucking all the energy out the room for their questionable single with Mobb Deep. Because of them G.O.D. father Part III didn't get the reception it deserved. That's another punch you in yo face just for living record.

My wife asked me at dinner the other night about my favorite groups from each borough and then I had to rank them. I put MOP over Mobb Deep but I'm rethinking that decision.

not necessarily catalog, but as far as rapping ability and that good old back and forth i love to hear from groups, M.O.P. got damn near everybody that ain't named Run DMC faded. as good as Mobb is, i can't even think of any instances offhand where the formula wasn't you do your verse then i'll do mine. i love that M.O.P. actually sounds like they wrote all of that shit together.

I'm hoping that "damn near everybody" doesn't include EPMD. I love me some MOP, but in terms of that rhyme back and forth shit, the only people that are close to fucking with E & P are Joe & Daryl.

Hmmm, well, from like '86 to '92, I'd say very much yes. PMD especially was extremely dope, and Erick was ill as well. PMD kinda slipped with that off-beat steez for his solo album, and Erick was decent book unremarkable for much of his solo career. Then when they got back together the first time, they were solid enough, though not as good as the first time. I will say that the second reunion album, "We Mean Business," was absolutely fucking awful, especially lyrically. It hurt to get badly out-shined by every guest MC not named Skyzoo.

Funny enough I just heard a verse where they did the back and forth. Spread Love from Murda Muzik shows them doing it. Wish they did it more. The thing that makes it tough for me with Mobb is Prodigy was one of the best emcees of his class. Top tier at one point. Neither Billy nor Fame had that stat. But to their advantage they are a more balanced group.

It's a hard choice...

It's really all about;
Infamous, Hell On Earth & Murda Muzik vs Firing Squad, First Family 4 Life & Warriorz

If we ranked those albums;

1 The Infamous
2 First Family For Life
3 Firing Squad
4 Hell On Earth
5 Warriorz
6 Murda Muzik

I guess I have to go with MOP.

I get the point of the post, but first thing that came to mind was "Takeover"...now Mobb was that crew, and not a fan of Jay like that, but Jay snatched their soul with "Takeover"...The Mobb was never the same after that dropped, so gotta call that song an epic...

Takeover really did a number on P. The fall off from HNIC to Infamy was major

I think it's more about what someone up top said. The uptempo aspect of the song can't be left out. Quiet Storm is a grimy gutter record with Banana clip P dancing all over the record. So while PSA and Takeover are epic you mostly throw your hand in the air and do that slow bop to it. Quiet Storm evokes someone getting stole on and a quick two step shuffle.

So I guess the answer is Jay has Epic records, just different kinds.

I don't think it's better than Quiet Storm but it's a solidified banger. D-dot laced Jay with that one.
