Album cuts still sound great, and a variety of singles. It was still early in his career, but you saw every side of him. The deep musical talent, the confusion from going from sex symbol to Religious, great singing, and even some lazy singing.

At least for me, I don't care for them.
Doesn't matter if it's R&B or hip hop.
There's filler here. Easily his best since 12 Play
if you reduce to one disc.

This one's kinda tricky for me because I can praise it just as much as I can critique it.

As someone has already said, as a single disc, this could have been a true classic but this album was very much the dawning of his R&B thug era, which I didn't take to: hip-hop by now had become such a big influence on him as well as the themes of money, and I remember looking at the tracklist when it came out and being really surprised by the song titles:

'Spendin Money'
'Only The Loot Can make Me Happy'
'VIP'
'Dollar Bill'
'Dancin With A Rich Man'
'Money Makes The World Go Round'
'Did You Ever Think'

I also don't think Trackmasters were specifically the best collaborators for him although there are some songs I really did like.

The gems are undeniable though.

Along with Illmatic, one of the best debuts in hip-hop. Had charisma, great production, interesting sampling choices, and the right mix of raunchy and fun.

One of the best Rap albums ever. Even with it being rushed, came out almost perfect. Production is arguably more modern/consistent than Chronic. Flows were amazing. Every single guest made sense and came with it. Great personality throughout.

G-funk classic. To be honest I probably enjoy this album more than the chronic, I have always felt like the production was marginally more advanced and Snoop is ridiculously good on this. 9/10

A perfect storm of a producer on top of his game and a hungry young MC with incredible flow and outstanding personality, culminating in one of the greatest rap records ever recorded.

This album truly shaped who I am as a music fan, as it was released when I was in 2nd/3rd grade, just as I was developing my ability to properly comprehend music and my personal tastes, and it remains and probably will forever remain firmly in my top 5 in hip-hop.

Might be one of the best "bridge the gap" albums ever...right in 95, which happened right when kids and adults were SLOWLY starting to enjoy the same music. Felt like NJS and everything for the kids was completely different from what the parents/old folks liked. I feel this album was better than "Back on the block," especially musically, although both had it's funny, dated sounding moments.

It's not a single song on the album that I skip...and the flow is greatness.

It's a great gospel album, probably his best. Good songwriting, great songs, and the most traditional of his work. These songs are probably the easiest to get to work for a local choir.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

Musically, it's great. Maybe 9/10 on that side. Just makes you wish he used all guest rappers. Even more polished than "Here, my dear" (his previous album)

underrated. if it wasn't hyped to be the second Chronic, it might be more highly thought of.

Best songs: Intro / East Coast, West Coast Killas / Been There, Done That / Table Dance / Shittin' on the World

Perfect. The album that made me a hip hop head for a very long time. Intense and passionate, created in the middle of inner band chaos. It was a group at the peak of their powers.

Fantastic.

Someone already said it, but this record was PE at the peak of its powers (and cultural impact).

The production is off the charts, the lyrics on point and the group's passion is apparent throughout.

It's hard to live up to "It Takes A nation of Millions to Hold US Back." And I'll cop to maybe unfairly putting this one up against it. It's still a very, very good album.

the songs all kind of bleed together and the drums become a bit monotonous, but overall it just works, very well

some of the songs and atmospheres are just narcotic and really capture rainy late nights in a city after reading a good book and thinking of some booty you lost

I recently relistened to this, for the first time in about five years actually, and compared to Me Against The World, this album is kind of a tragedy. The first disc is good enough, but the second disc is actually horrible; one can only sit through so many g-funk-ish chick songs until he says no more. Despite this, there is still no denying that when it hits, it hits hard. 6/10

My favorite Quik album. This album got so much burn in my circle. Big Quik fan and a great rebound from his previous album which was a bit of a letdown following his classic debut.

Thought Way 2 Fonky was pretty bad, I rank it near the bottom of his discography. Safe & Sound is #1, with Rhythm-al-ism nipping at its heels at #2. I just find Safe & Sound to be so incredibly consistent in sound and his best lyrically.

Kind of all over the place and I hate 'Every Little Things She Does is Magic', but some of the vocal melodies on the verses are just incredibly good (thinking of 'Invisible Sun' mainly, but 'Rehumanize Yourself' is just as good in this regard). Uneven, but the highlights are very high.

Nothing lol. I just don't want to give one artist two 10's. It's not fair. Stevie had the greatest run of great to classic albums all-time IMO.

Her best album and best five of the "neo-soul" moment. Great lyrics and quality production

her second album was just as good imo, but for reason didn't hit folk as tough

i haven't checked for Jill in a long time

Very much a masterpiece. Production was incredible and was the perfect demo for Jazzy Jeff's ATOJ stable - shame that team didn't stay together for many more years as I think they could have created several more front-to-back awesome albums for a few other artists before they all disbanded.

From a songwriters perspective, I'd say it was a game-changer as well - her personality was all over that record and despite all amazing elements involved in that record, she was very much the star.

7/10

Until last year's AOA, 3121 was the best post Rainbow Children album released by Prince.

8 out of the 12 songs on the album are solid to great and a couple (Black Sweat and 3121 in particular) are among his best in the last 15 years.

I'll always support an artist using his platform for progressive social and political messages, and love artists taking chances rather than staying stagnant with one style or repeating prior work.

But this album is just a mess to me. I wanted to give it a 5 but I gave it a 6 because I do think thematically he really had something here, but the end result is just not enjoyable at all. Outside of 3, maybe 4 songs, I have no desire to listen to any of it again.

This started the 3 album (2 1/2, actually, since KAW was an EP) stretch where Cube was probably the best rapper on the planet. The pairing of Cube's potent lyrics, the Bomb Squad's sonic wall of chaos and Sir Jinx west coast funk made for a classic on both coasts

I think the album gets more notoriety just for the concept of chopping up The White Album more than anything else, but it was a very ambitious project no matter how you cut it. Loved the mixed of PSA and 99 Problems. Other tracks ran from good to OK

There was a time in my life that The Planet really resonated with me emotionally

The end of the album is not as strong as the beginning imo but it would have been hard to avoid that. Aquemini suffers from the same thing; when the first 2/3 of the album is that great its gotta be hard to keep that up for the last 1/3.

Also i think the 2xLP is mislabeled in the track order. Thats kinda annoying.

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

It's really a great record. Lots of quality songs and singles. Even the b-sides from this record are top notch.

Really don't need to hear either Dilla or Lib on the mic, but hearing them try to outdo them on their respective tracks was worth it.

BTW, Madlib beat Dilla on this. Just saying...

To me, some of these sound like chops for chops sake, not necessarily intended to ever have been real songs. Some work better than others. Works better as a technical exercise than an actual album, and probably doesn't need to be hailed as a classic.
