"It's rare that I can love every song on a R&B album."

Going back to like the 80's....even on the most classic R&B albums, I feel like many of them had 3-4 completely filler or trendy, type of songs that keep it from being near perfect.

And I've seen theories on here, because some folks tend to agree. For example...people seem to hail "12 Play" as the best, or at least a Top 3 R&B album of the 90's. But there are a few songs that are comical at best, horrible at worst.

Is part of the reason because it's easier to make good Hip Hop songs than to make good R&B? Or is this just all my opinion, and R&B albums in the last 25 years or so have been better than Rap albums?

That was the most fantastic R&B album in recent years, imo.

Teyana Taylor's recent release came very, very close for me.
I can AT LEAST play it without skipping.

Teedra Moses - Complexity was good all the way through as well.

And I was thinking to myself that the album is really great, and so listenable.

button' on here.

It's super rare that I hate a song enough to skip it and jar the experience of what that album is out. Even something like, say, The Massacre. If I went back and listened to that for nostalgia purposes (I was in high school when it dropped, and it leaked something like three weeks early and the hype for 50/G-Unit at my school was INSANE, and it was one of my first CD-R for a dollar hustles…illegal as fuck, I know) I wouldn't skip anything.

The only songs I can recommend from that thing are Ski Mask Way, I'm SUpposed to Die Tonight, Baltimore Love Thing and the Hate It or Love It remix, maybe In My Hood, but that's 4-5/22 tracks. I'd still listen to the whole thing.

Or, like, if I were in the mood for Marshall Mathers LP but I wasn't in the mood for "Kim", I'd rather not listen to the album than skip "Kim".

all this is to say there are plenty of albums with songs I like less than the highlights, but they are still part of that album. it takes Mickey Avalon levels of awful for me to actively HATE a song.

Chronic 2001 is close. But Doggystyle, Illmatic, Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders, Fantastic Vol. 2 is veeeeery close, Kendrick's new one would be aside from "U"...sounds wild, but even the 02 Lil Jon album, I enjoyed it all for what it was. Surely "Dogg Food"...Game "Documentary"...Blueprint (well I don't like Izzo or That nigga Jigga too much anymore)...Late registration.

I can name some more....some which aren't even "classic." I would say Tuxedo's album is basically R&B, and I think I like every song on there for sure.

to be good or great in EVERY lane....upbeat/fast club, upbeat/moderate paced club/radio...slightly slower, but still kinda upbeat....romantic slow jams....sexual slow jams....etc etc.

Like I think 95% of Jodeci's upbeat jams are average as hell, sound like a joke almost. Mint Condition was never good at upbeat jams, either. Tony Toni Tone was one modern group that was pretty good at upbeat tracks, but even they struggled when NJS ended.

Mary J. probably covered most lanes, except having sexual slow jams.

As someone who's not exactly a fan of contemporary R&B but much prefer the 70's album era with Stevie, Marvin, Curtis, Sly etc. where every song is not necessarily *great* but rarely less than "good"/enjoyable/whatever, I feel Maxwell achieved something similar...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's as good as the best 70's shit BUT it felt like he actively tried to make a strong, cohesive album (actually, it works better like that than as a collection of songs IMO).

It was pretty cool to hear a record like that in the 90's, unfortunately, I didn't like the follow-up which was too Kate Bush/Enya-R&B for my tastes-all watery and wet, lacking in "sharpness" and definition...

flower power mess with no real money tracks and it nearly wrecked him and rightfully so, you can't come out with some heat and then turn the air conditioner on, when its already under 50 degrees.

...but in the 00's it's very rare that I hear or listen to an r&b album from beginning to end without skipping or just turning it off, I think the last r&b album that did that for me was Maysa's "Metamorphosis" and/or Jill Scott's "Original Jill Scott From The Vaults".

In the 80's though it was a lot of great r&b albums that had flow, not sure if it was cause of cassettes and not wanting to fast foward or now that cds are the norm and the skip button makes it easy to just skip to the next song but to me albums and been well thought thru sometimes to where they had a person to make sure were to place songs and to make sure it flowed from one song to the next without being boring; but that's just my two cents.

Before that it was either Brown Sugar or House Of Soul. For one I think way too many albums of the past 25 years have been way too long with too many songs that in the early 80's and late 70's would have been cut down to 8-10 songs.

Maxwell came real close with his last album...so did Cody with "Landing On A Hundred" where I basically skip past one song and that's it.

is one I can listen to from start to finish. Not one dud in the bunch in my opinion. How many artists in modern R&B lead off with a ballad? It's still my favorite album from that era. I could listen to her other releases straight through too.
