The thing is, the beats on Soul Survivor were just as good…if not better…than the chop-fest we got from Premier on Moment Of Truth. Guru's presence makes MoT the better album to me, but Soul Survivor has SERIOUS beats. Sublime shit.
A couple of those Petestrumentals beats sound like 98 joints as well.
I like what I've heard from Petestrumentals 2. Pete's Instagram is a hard follow, but yeah…I was truly hype when he posted a few of these beats over the past couple months. Sounded way better than whatever he's made since NY's Finest.

This sound right up in the ally of the beats from the "Soul Survivor II" sessions, remember that instrumental cd "Surviving Elements" which half the beats had a Curtis Mayfield sample in them, well this is another with those same drums he's used before.
I hope the rest of the beats are from his SP1200 days from '90 to '99 & not the latter; I just wish he released the vocals to half of the joints off the first edition of "Petestrumentals".

You see I didn't say dope cause it's not on that level but the beats great some are crazy dope while most in that donuts realm that I hope many people were getting out of since it's been done to death since J-Dilla's passing but I can understand Pete's diving into that chamber; the album has an earthy vibe more than a boom bap sound I was wanting though.
And I say chamber cause as I was listening to "Petestrumentals 2" I kept thinking..."Damn, I can hear GZA, Ghost, or Masta Killa over this joint", I say about 75% of the beats cause have been for a Wu-Tang meets Pete Rock collaboration; especially tracks like "My My Baby", "Gonna Love You", "Play Ya Horn" and etc; and I can definitely hear Roc Marciano over the "90's Class Act" beat.
I want say this was a let down but I would've rather heard these beats with vocals instead but I guess Pete is saving the heat for actual vocal tracks...I guess.

.....imo run too long. They all sound designed to have an MC/singer hop on and since there ARE no vocals things get repetitive around the 2-minute point of each track. And funny enough, I wish the little interlude-beats/loops that link the tracks were a little longer.

And by "sound," I'm referring to the sonic quality as well as the composition. There's an infamous thread on Gearslutz that shows how well-recorded that album was. Also impressive was the fact that they were "throwaway"/unused beats. I bought the first press in NYC, then ordered the second press once I heard a snippet for "Take The D Train"….that shit is just as good as anything on Petestrumentals 2, and I don't mind if it runs over 3 or 4 minutes. The thick sound is hard to ignore on the first volume…it's Pete at his best.

... and while On and On and Dilla Bounce came across various playlists, I don't think I heard the album in full. As someone who appreciates Pete more than reveres him, this album was worth the listen.
Like someone above said, Pete shows his versatility here. The styles vary but the level of quality is consistently great (as to be expected).
