"What's wrong with Naughty By Nature?"

This is one group that often gets overlooked and I think it's because many focus on the crossover singles they had without giving their albums a good listen. These dudes delivered three good albums. Have a good producer and one of the most underrated emcees in rap history IMO. Yeah, Vinny is wack but dude didn't even average a full verse per song. He was just there to say "Hey!" and echo the ending of one of Treach's bars for the most part. I remember when I made that post saying that Treach was better than Pac early on and some dudes tried to clown of course. I just don't understand why Naughty doesn't get the credit they deserve. What's your reason for not liking Naughty?

Everything's Gonna Be Alright
Guard Your Grill
Uptown Anthem
It's On
Written On Ya Kitten
Craziest <-----for some reason thats one of my favorite beats ever
Feel Me Flow

I feel about Naughty the same way I feel about ONYX... they were corny at times, yes... but also had some great moments in their careers..

First one:
Yoke the Joker
Wickedest Man Alive
Everyday All Day
Rhyme'll Shine On
1, 2, 3 (Lakim Shabazz?!?!? Can't fuck with that)
Thanx For Sleep Walking

Second album:
Ready For Them (Heav killed that)
Take it To Your Face
Daddy Was a Street Corner
Hood Comes First
Knock 'em the Box
Hot Potato (Freddie Foxx was murderous on that)
Sleeping on Jersey

That's a lot of dopeness on those albums.

is a johnny come lately who wasn't there

ppl can characterize me how they want based off that

but i was there...and treach was routinely in top 5 convos at the time

pac was never bestowed that honor til he passed

thats just real

other than that

its exactly what u said...never had such a technically gifted rapper had a production base that was so "crossover"

so ppl look at the singles and judge treach when they should be knowledging 19naughty3 and the harder stuff

Naughty had at least one album (featuring "O.P.P.") under their belt by then.

After STRICTLY came out ...everything you ever knew or thought about 2Pac was codified. The "Thug Life" image, the dual conscience ("Keep Ya Head Up", "I Get Around"), everything. That was Pac's real breakthrough IMO.

19-NAUGHTY-III came out one week after this album IIRC...

With social media and the internet, comments like that would set off all kinds of shit now.

Back then, everything wasn't spread around on the internet and it was possible for some comments in an obscure magazine to go largely unnoticed, though E-40 heard about it and stepped to BIG over it.

who understood keeping a money track and playing well into the rules of the image and it worked like a charm for a while, problem for them was that they were seen as fun and they played into MTV friendly cross over
and yet played the role of the streets
and never got called out on either

and yet it didn't hurt their pockets. they were never gonna see the elite top tier rap groups, they were the hood version of a Heavy D and the Boyz and yet Treach never had leading man chops to pull that solo and so they are rightfully placed in history

i dug treach however Naughty By Nature is somewhere between the Getto Boys and Heavy D and the Boyz

In response to Reply # 0

Who would you give the edge to? I agree with Naughty being a group that a list of good song but the albums were kinda lacking. Trech is a talented mc, as good as they come.

The Lost Boyz had Legal Drug Money a superb album IMO great singles off that album but like Naughty the albums after that were kinda lacking. I like Love Peace and Nappiness and still play it, but most folks I knew weren't feelin it at all. So Lost Boyz shot out the gate with a great album then they had a decent list of songs.

As far as whose the better MC I would say Trech is. Mr. Cheeks knows how write a good song though.

But I'd say legal drug money is better than any Naughty easily. But Naughty By Nature had steady hit singles but the albums were hit and miss. I think if you made a list of both groups songs it'd be close.

Mr. Cheeks wrote accessible songs, but they are very boring. Case in point, Renee, in which after telling us that his girl was in school because she wanted to be a lawyer, felt the need to further clarify that in other words, she studies law. They may have had hooks and beats on that album, but that's about it.

He's not going to tear down a cypher, but once you start writing songs it's not about that. The "lawyer/shorty studies law" is one of the most memorable lines in rap.

Thanks for linking your post, but to be honest I really start enjoying rap until '86. Sure I heard my older brother and sisters bumping stuff, but I'm not going to remember those lyrics. If you were to make a list from the mid-nineties, the "shorty studies law" line could easily be on it. I'd be up for another post like that, maybe we can do different time periods in rap or something.

Let my love slide in and never slip out

in that I feel like they had the aesthetic and content of an "underground" rap group but they made catchy (and wildly successful) pop songs.

Like, almost, but not quite... if M.O.P. had a near-ubiquitous pop single.

It could be called ridiculous that "Hip Hop Hooray" and "Written On Ya Kitten" were on the same album.

A Naughty By Nature Greatest Hits album would be stellar. The Naughty By Nature album is full of great songs, after that they strength of their full length albums incrementally decreases.

treach is an amazing rapper. i agree that all of their first three albums are good. poverty's paradise might actually be their best overall. vinny wasn't great but not bad enough to ruin a song imo. that live at morris brown version of opp was the shit. they sounded good with the roots at the picnic too.

One of the better live shows in Hip Hop and Treach is a top notch MC who has influenced everyone from Eminem to Kendrick. That first album was great from top to bottom and each album had at least a few cuts on there.

I liked the first album back when I was in jr high. Then they got too popular, and I got in the mode of not liking popular ish. Then Del dissed Treach on "Wack MCs" and that was the nail in the coffin for me... Del was probly my fave rapper around that time.

And consider Treach to be top 10-15 of all time. They had the raw, hard songs, and I liked almost all of their radio hits too.

Naughty definitely doesn't get enough props now. Not talking about those who were actually there, because they know. But for the younger generation that actually cares a little bit about older rap music, it seems like it's cool for them to name check Tribe and De La and GangStarr, but they don't know nothing about Naughty.
