"Run The Jewels is Garbage"

Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way... I just don't get it.

El-P has been terrible forever and Killer Mike is boring.

Sounds like rap music for white rock fans who want to name drop rap music.

Smh.

it definitely wasn't my album of the year

i prefered rock konducta vol.1 and lese majesty...shit piñata was way better

el-p always has about 3-4 good songs...but i dont ever like the full album

but just the fact rolling stone had it number 1 already lets u know the fix is in

i think vol 1 being vinyl only helped though. i feel like i listen more attentively to the vinyl

i own vol2 on vinyl but haven't even cracked it. been listening on spotify

i like em both better than run the jewels tbh

on a technical level Monch is easily in my top 5 rappers ever. Desire, and PTSD just didn't deliver for me (never got around to WAR). so i hold his discog against him. and yup it was mostly the beats, cause especially on PTSD, he is spitting his ass off conceptually. Internal Affairs tho will always be my shit. it's a classic to me.

Sean P a sav bro, we all know this, but we know what we getting with Sean P. album, a collection of good ass rap songs, no more, no less. I will always enjoy his music, it's just not upper echelon to me...

and yes same poster. earlier in the week this account got deactivated, and when i created that other one, i did so at work, so i saved the login / password. i use bof now

just to be clear

not really. I only like about 3 of those records

my highest (lese) is toward the bottom of their list.

you and them have RTJ #1. both of yall also piñata high and ahead of lese

besides those three albums I don't know how your stacks up.

but u agree with them (in rankings order) of the albums we share love for

It probably one of the best hip hop releases this decade though...

My co-sign above was for RTJ being over-rated not for it being garbage.

But R.A.P. Music and El-P's solo shit is just more dynamic.

RTJ is a very jarring listen. I love the hard hip-hop shit like the next man but for an overall album, I prefer for mine to have highs and lows and different styles all while being cohesive. RAP Music did a very good job of that.

RTJ is very much Mike and El going in the studio and do some straight forward shit and capitalizing on the fan base.

And there's nothing wrong with that. It's a dope album. But for the "best of the year" shit people are claiming, and now best of the past few years...nah...It's not that.

Just doesn't do much for me. R.A.P. Music was one of my favorite albums of that year. I still play it often. I listened to the first RTJ album with high expectations, and really didn't care to revisit it. I did, hoping it would click, but it never did. Went in to the 2nd one hoping it would be better, but nah. Neither is bad, they're just not for me.

he deserves to have some real success from his music, hes been doing this a long time now. so im happy for him, but do i really think its up there with what he used to do? not really. but it does what it does well. hes making slicker, more accessible music, it just doesnt really hit me like the older stuff did. but i still like him a lot as an MC, weirdly more than i do as a producer these days. but im happy for him and mike.

agreed. though i prefer rtj2 to c4c, which i found a bit underwhelming tbh.

if any other rapper put that out it'd be looked at better, but for an el-p album it seemed almost formulaic

TBH me & my guy had this exact SAME conversation around new years... My mentor was going on & on about both albums. I decide to take a listen one day & find unlike some other gems I missed over the years, this was not one of them. Based of him being a musical mentor, I was actually kinda shocked at how much of a miss the albums were.

I get a little bored with contrarianism. Two good-plus rappers and a great producer make an album lots of people really like (including lots of ppl who know what they're talking about, though also some who don't). It's clearly not garbage. It's just not your thing.

Which is cool, whatever, but you don't have to try to suck the rest of us into the inevitable cycle of hype and backlash.

it definitely has become this. i don't think it was created with "white rock fans" in mind. el-p has been making his sound more accessible for years and the sound on rtj is a natural part of that progression

as much as i like rtj 2 and love el-p and mike's hard-earned success, i find some of their johnny-come-lately fans to be pretty annoying. my social media feeds are littered with run the jewels-related things links to the rtj marvel covers accompanied by text saying "i tried to tell y'all when they came here." motherfucker i tried to tell you about el-p 15 years ago! you turned your nose up when i played you pledge 2 and 3! i know my frustration is a bit irrational but bandwagoning (or at least what i perceive to be bandwagoning) rtj out of nowhere really irks me

but it could be argued that rtj is the best thing el and mike have ever done so it's only natural that they have a ton of new fans. who can say for sure?

But this is ultimately the fate/goal for any "indie" or "underground" act that continues to get bigger, right?

RTJ is cool to me and I like that they are finally getting the shine they've strived for, but it's not the best work that either of them have done, IMO. You *could* make that argument for their last solo albums.

RTJ was the victory lap for C4C/Rap Music. RTJ2 was the victory lap for the even greater success of RTJ. Now they're doing a third, and I just hope it's not another copy of the last two.

agreed. what's great about their success is that they are finding it without compromising who they are or the type of music they make. that's a huge achievement for them

we'll see. el and mike aren't known for half-assing anything so the album should be fine. i don't know where they go with 3 since 2 seemed to be "oh they're really serious about this" sucker punch that 1's flippancy set up. are they going to go deeper into their sound or try to broaden it more in order to capitalize on their current popularity?

I think the albums great and I also appreciate a lot of the albums on the lists posted by others earlier and RJT2 sits comfortably with those albums IMO.

I'm just glad that a dude whose first album I purchased in 97 (company flow) has made it to the top without compromise..

I'm amped over El-P and Killer Mike in the same way I've been hyped over havoc and prodigy, ghost & Rae, Tek and Steele etc

I look forward to part 3..

What's wrong with what I said? Coming at me dickhead insults..

I'm 36, and I grew up on and happen to like rap duo's with chemistry who vibe off each other and RTJ has that style from the 90's where it feels like the guys actually wrote their verses together.

I don't need a fan club dedicated to a one rap group.

I was out supporting hip hop way before you probably caught up via a bulk download of tinny mp3's..

I'm offended by the comparison. We about the same age doggie. You can cluster EL-P and Mike with all that nerd indie rap circle Atmosphere, Aesop Rock,Pigeon John, I'll even throw in Murs in there (I dig Murs)
Next thing you gonna tell me El-P and Killer Mike is on Nas level y'all going too far with this shit.

I don't know you, but I imagine you angrily typing with blunt stained nails, wearing a 'Wu Wear hat & Boot Camp shirt' whilst mumbling the mantra of "keep it real, Stakes is high yo!" over and over..

I'm not a fan of any of the above acts, although I did check for Murs until Murs for President.

I wouldn't use a Nas comparison as I was referring to duo's on the mic (plus Nas is incomparable in my eyes, he's a beast)..

Maybe you would have been less threatened if I'd compared RTJ to other indie acts as Black Star, Cunninlynguists (not a duo but almost) or Cannibal ox, rather than the unimpeachable rap god's whose honour you so bravely defend.

If so, I apologise for my hyperbole and enthusiasm.. Music can do that...

^^^^^^^ Get's it!

SOME people be acting like you gotta choose a classic album to put in the trash every time you listen to something newer or alternative, on some "Gonna listen to this Kendrick, so I think it's time to throw out the Main Source LP"....

Nah!! It don't work like that, you can enjoy both!

the album was fine but it being universally lauded across the board was actually surprising. there's definitely something bothersome, as someone mentioned up-top, of the lauding of this album by "rock" fans but i guess the aggression/style of the production makes sense for that crowd

both rtj albums are fine. i actually really enjoy rap music. I don't have much history with killer mike but I've heard great things about his pledge mixtapes. i have a bit more exposure with el-p, mostly via fantastic damage and company flow (and cold vein is just incredible), and even with that limited sample size it just seems like they're both really marginalized here.

like, i love the concept. i love them personally and i love the message. but when i put this on there just isn't much in the music that's grabbing me

i think oh darling is a banger. i think km's verses on close your eyes and lie cheat still are phenomenal but the production is distracting and a lot of the choruses are awful

i guess my major beef is more that i'm completely confused and kind of put off by the praise this album is getting. if it was just popular in rap circles i would understand but when it's getting #1 on pitchfork and stereogum it shows that music culture is a lot more concerned with image and branding than the actual music. which is pretty obvious i guess, but still depressing

whoever said they want to hear KM over soulful shit - I agree, since he's been rapping over one type of production for three years now

The first album had some joints here & there but nothing that I would sit there & listen to ever again from front to back, but I'm kind of glad El Producto & Killer Mike are getting some attention & spreading that word that lyrics with a real subject can come from anywhere & that it's not dead (like all these so called rap fans say) but when they made a second album I was like "really, another one" I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it (especially if the first one got a lot of press & minimal sales for an indie release).

I'm more happy their getting the praise more than it being something I like or can listen to; the same goes for Kendrick Lamar, I've been following Kendrick's music for about four years now & even though I can't stand his voice, it's good to see him staying lyrical and bring subject matter to the table again & again instead of falling into that nonsense-trap music trap that everyone is doing.

I'll have to go back to Random Axe. I remember being pretty underwhelmed by it.

wall of sound/bomb squad thing. I dig the energy, but the music is too busy. it never lets up and the beats aren't great.

maybe #3 will be better.

A lot of it is too minimalist/repetitive, I like el-p production best when it's as layered and noisy and chaotic as possible

I think they got a better balance of production styles on Killer Mike's R.A.P music. I don't dislike more densely pack tracks in general, but these RTJ albums are too much of that for me.

gears of war 4, published by microsoft. and i guess there's a new song from RTJ in a new commercial for this game? internet at work is severely restricted so i can't validate that claim

not exactly what i would expect from guys that are on record as being very anti-establishment and vaguely anti-commercialism. if this was something from a small indie studio, or even the original developers of gears of war, epic games (at one point they were brash, loud, and rebellious), i think it would be a great look. but el-p and killer mike in bed with microsoft feels a little off to me

then again this probably will expand their brand quite a bit. maybe this is a slight step back to enable a great leap forward. and it's probably unfair to hold el and mike to statements they made on wax years ago. and at a certain age you probably just don't give a fuck about that stuff anymore and are more concerned with you and your loved ones' well being than something you said on a song when you were 25

This was a really dumb post. Kind of interesting though, which I guess is the point. If you don't get why RTJ is dope I honestly have trouble believing that you like rap.

Never was much of an EL P fan and Killer Mike is just alright. I like what Killer Mike is doing non hip hop wise, he's a smart dude. But RTJ just isn't my thing.

i didn't say anything about the music. this is just about them being in a video game published by one of the largest corporations on earth. i think that's weird

like i said above i'm sure all of these licensing/likeness/endorsement things are a net positive for mike and el. RTJ get more money, their brand expands, the corporations get money and exposure, and fans get more content. everyone wins

i think i shouldn't have upped this post. it paints the game thing in a purely negative light, which wasn't my intention. also, this post isn't that great to begin with and pulling it back up just lets more people see it. that's a bad move on my part

A lot of really dumb, arrogant, all or nothing stances.

If you like/don't like this, I have to question your taste/grasp of hip hop!

No, you dumb, reductionist motherfuckers. You just have different tastes where this particular group is concerned. Every time somebody says that bullshit line I think about all the points where the tastes of the two people in that discussion intersect.

If you both love ten other artists and discussed only those artists, the morons who make the "I have to question your taste/knowledge/whatever the fuck" comment on shit they don't like most likely thinks "wow, that guy really knows his stuff" after that discussion of the ten artists they both love.

It's just about the worst argument or response anyone can make in these discussions.

I like his beats, don't get me wrong, but I think I like his rapping more.

And Killer Mike is obviously a monster mc.

Maybe RTJ is a bit overhyped in some circles, but when they first joined forces i was blown away by the results, so there's no way i could ever entertain this idea that they're garbage. Imo, even if they lack some variety, they're one of the best things going in popular hiphop right at this moment.
