"Kendrick Lamar - I (link)"

I'll need to give this a few more spins. Samples the Isley's. This isn't hitting me though.

sounds more like a song from a Disney movie soundtrack than the next Kendrick album.

I haven't heard the FlyLo & Kendrick song yet (waiting for You're Dead to drop) but I hope Kendrick goes a bit to the left on his next album instead of trying to appeal to the masses.

As long as Lamar is appealing to the masses on his own terms I got no beef with dude being commercial...

Hell, we need more "DOPE" commercial hip-hop....

I prefer his previous positive, commercial songs like "Now or Never". This one simply doesn't hit me in the same way and I think it's an interesting choice for a single after his long hiatus.

I'm curious to see where he'll go for his next (THIRD) album. There's got of be a lot of pressure on him to deliver something huge and although he's improved with every mixtape/album, I get the feeling the next Kendrick Lamar album will be more polarizing.

And not in a good way. I remember when 2 years between albums was the norm.

That's the problem with the access the internet provides.

Everyone feels the need to drop new mix tapes and albums multiple times a year.

Word and with Gang Starr your ass was waiting 4 to 5 years so groups dropping new music every two years was a blessing. People are just spoiled now because there's new music released almost everyday.

Can't wait to bang this in CDQ out of a quality system, but it even sounds great in my earbuds.

edit: A much needed message of self-love, by the way. Glad dude is providing an alternative in the mainstream to the cats with the garbage messages.

edit 2: Then there are the small touches, like the sample of car horns and traffic at the end as the music fades. That's so LA. Glad my homies know the side streets, their highways are awful. LOL.

Aye if self love is corny, we need corny messages in rap. Throw "cool" all the way
out the damn window.

Overbearing message... LOL! So an "overbearing message" is only bad when it's
self love, huh? You need to be yelling this shit in JayZ and Rick Ross posts about
being rich and having drug money... and leave the conversation there.

you are not too bright and too butthurt

is it not uptempo? north of 100 bpm? there's prolly like 50 of those since 1988 after the hip house craze died down.

where did I say self love was corny? read much? I said the song was corny! you could make a corny song about cocaine or Rihanna lol

I'm not giving white people credit for nothing. I can't stand Macklemores music.

was a big fan of gkmc but even then I felt like he was just toeing the line of being preachy.

as southphily pointed out there's a lot of "positive" or message infused rap that ain't corny and ain't a blatant attempt to crossover and/or win that Grammy

>you are not too bright and too butthurt

I'm brighter than you'd like for me to be, and "butthurt" is just a silly phrase that
never applies to me.

>is it not uptempo? north of 100 bpm? there's prolly like 50 of
>those since 1988 after the hip house craze died down.

You have no point, there. Macklemore didn't make those "50" songs (I'm sure
there have been more, but that's neither here nor there).

>where did I say self love was corny? read much? I said the

Where did you say what made the song "corny" tho? Exactly.

Yeah, neither can I, but this is song is cool. Go figure.

Definitely disagree with that POV.

True, and given what's crossing over and winning Grammy's right now, this doesn't
fit the mold. "That Lady" loop from the Isley Bros? Lol.. Yall cats don't know what's winning grammys.

In response to Reply # 122

I don't even associate Macklemore with uptempo rap, that's Chubb Rock and Big Daddy Kane's lane.

I don't even consider "i" particularly uptempo. I wasn't busting out into The Running Man when I heard it. It's not slow, but it's not a ridiculously fast BPM either.

where did i say that macklemore had a patent? lol

i gave three descriptors

uptempo/corny/overbearing message

those three characteristics in CONCERT make it feel like a macklemore joint...

is that clearer?

i coulda added the stiff drum sounds as well...

y'all gonna point out that all 90s jazz had drums like that??

Not what I expected to Kendrick at all.
And I wasn't sure what to make of it on first listen.
The next 3 listens were in the whip instead of off my laptop. So it obviously sounded better. At this point -- I kinda like it. Definitely don't love it. But it's cool. That goddamn Isley's guitar is gonna be in my head all day. They cleared that?

it's obviously supposed to be a positive song, based on the content.
but if you actually listen to the verses (see 3rd verse), there is nothing "mom" about it.
i hope it actually blows up so people realize that radio rap can actually be well written and doesn't have to be trash.

Swimming Pools, Backseat Freestyle, Money Trees.

This is what I expected out of Kendrick for the 1st single
content wise. Wasn't expecting that beat though.
The guitar wailing in the hook is excellent.
Beat for first 2 verses is wack. Beat flip and energy switch
in third verse is classic Kendrick, what we've come to expect
from him.

Beat before the guitar sample in the hook sounds so much like
a Neptunes beat, a real rip off. If wouldn't have had the artwork
before the song came out, and we knew it wasn't featuring anyone,
I def woulda been surprised to NOT hear Pharrell on the hook
upon 1st listen.

That shit is neither true nor consistent with our nature. Fuck the bullshit.

It pales in comparison to all of his past singles, wondering why he chose to use that effect on his voice really. I see why he chose it as a single though, as the hook is definitely hit/anthem worthy. I love these bass lines in the background throughout the track and how the song changes at the 2:50 mark and ends with the emphasis on the electric bass (also that sounds allot like Thundercat on bass, might be), unfortunately that is not most of the song. That guitar solo sample in the hook would probably be 10x cooler in another context though.

I hope this is the worst track on the album lol

KL has 'singles'?

I bought GKMC strictly off of the strength of Section.80

but as I remember it

all of the 'singles' off of GKMC came well after the album was already out...yes?

i.e., this song is actually his first attempt at putting a lead single out for an album, IMO.

I was hoping he would stay in that lane

and make the masses conform to his art

but unfortunately, it looks like he's conforming a bit with this song

my point

if you listen to hii power and swimming pools

and put it into the context of today

i.e., one of the most anticipated releases of the year following up the huge acclaim of GKMC

no way a record label (and I'm assuming after GKMC there are alot more money guys in the room now at the record label) would put out either of those songs as the lead single for the follow up to GKMC

as I said, I was hoping he could both challenge listeners (with content not going more pop) and garner success with this album

I'm still hopeful based on the FlyLo collabos

but I can't get excited about this track

I want an album that sounds like Never Catch Me!

You're not defending other niggas' rights, or teaching me any lessons about expressing opinions here. It's a nice attempt to pass one's self off as "rational" and "objective," but it's false.

As far as that, knock-it-out-the-park-home-run one song.. From what I can remember The Recipe, Compton, and Swimming Pools didn't really hit me like a bomb when they first came out. Those songs grew on me after getting the concept as a whole.

Even Bitch Dont Kill My Vibe, his biggest single to date, didn't gain real legs until AFTER GKMC already came out and the critical acclaim starting pouring in..

Not making excuses for Kendrick or this "i" joint, its a decent song..but I think its off base to expect some monster smash hit for Kendrick first time up to bat with no warm up so to speak (this sing could serve the same purpose as The Recipe last time out.)

Whether it's Swimming Pools, BDKMV, whatever..KDot has never had monster, out the gate singles like a Drake, hes more of a slow burner......so to expect "i" to be that would be expecting too much (Kendrick pretty much confirm that "i" is not that in his Big Boy interview, and said hes not even done with the album..just wanted to throw something out there).

Just dropped it at midnight out of the blue.

Because no matter what, he is going to have detractors. If you do more of the same, people will hate. If you different, people will hate.

The hype/expectations are so large that dropping 10-12 tracks at midnight could not go wrong.

Let the singles come after.

Why do you continue to do this to yourself?

Kendrick isn't my hero little buddy, I was just saying my opinion on how he should have released his follow up.

My point was just that based on his hype (weather you like him or not) he could have dropped an album at unannounced and set the net on fire.

Don't have to agree with my idea, but stop flailing about.

We get it, you don't like Kendrick. None of us are crashing Cheesesteak-wreaking Meek Mill threads.

Meh...every time I argue with you I feel guilty after. Its like I picked on a high school kid or something.

So consider this me patting you on the head and sending you on you're way back to your Lebron app...

just rapping over some thrown together, fun sample chops

but as an album track/single, im not sure about it - his voice sounds like hes doing some sort of cartoon character voice. or trying to sound like snoop.

it is a kind of corny song overall. i expect common to pop up on the remix lol. but i like it. corny isnt necessarily a bad thing. people want to act much too cool these days.

Wait, shutup, because I don't say that because some don't like it.

I say that because people are saying he's going for a Pop crowd.
Do yall know what Pop sounds like today?
It doesn't sound like an Isley Brothers loop, that's for sure.

Folks saying it sounds like Macklemore.
It doesn't.

It simply sounds very left of anything that's going on in music right now... aside from Raekwon's throwback Thursday series.

Anything that doesn't fit the strict formula that people expect or are used to hearing,
and they call it Pop or some other off-base reference.

I got nothing against people not liking it, but stop trying to define it if your listening habits are too narrow to get your comparisons right.

Jay has whole albums of shitty songs. As in, several

Just admit it and stop straining. Y'all are squirming

It would easily be the most clowned song of the
year on these boards.

Kendrick makes it, people in here squirming around,
looking deep into their souls for reasons to like it.

Bwahahahahaha

And Lupe has lightweight alienated his fanbase...

While the song isn't his best, I love the message and the fact that it will get plenty of radio play... Also, my nieces will now sing along with this more than Kesha...

EDIT: I'm a fan of all the artists you mentioned and am not saying you're necessarily wrong... But Kendrick making a song like this vs any of those 3, has very different implications... Kendrick gets this song on the radio (to the masses) in heavy rotation...

rappers

They are fallable, you know

Even the best ones

This song is shitty

If you just admit it, it won't ruin your day or
week or life

Its just admitting a fact

This song is shitty

ie be succesful, and attract people who may not be fans to your album, while hopefully not totally repelling those who are fans. i dont expect this to be an indication of the album.

I wish someone archived the discussion of that track when it dropped.

Anyway, I recall it being a super polarizing track at the time. I think now the song is universally praised.

Not saying this track is on that level. However, I heard it on the radio this weekend and it kind of made more sense to me and knocked a little bit.

The controversy is people in here stretching far and wide
for a reason to like it, when its just not a very good
song

Its what is wrong with fandom

I'm among Nas' biggest fans and have shat all over MANY of
his songs...same with Jay, who I also LOVE as an artist...
...I'm proud to say that Jay-Z has more awful albums than
good ones, let alone great ones

I still like the artist, though

People aren't able to do that

These Lessonheads are wimps, not able to form any grownup
opinions

The songs is cool in some aspects but ultimately it's eh. If I never heard it again I wouldn't be sad.

Folks were expecting to twist their face up at some hard ass hip hop. Instead we are having think tanks trying to figure out WHY we SHOULD like the song.

In response to Reply # 198

I've personally spent a lot of time listening to the radio in other people's cars since I got out of the review game and stopped staying home listening to albums all day. I've honestly really enjoyed the radio this year, and the only thing I can think of more annoying than this song is Nicki Minaj's verse on "Flawless" and even that makes me laugh how ridiculous it is.

that isley's loop reminded me of beastie's "a year and a day". if kendrick rapped over that loop as a kinda/sorta tribute to MCA, that's fucking AWESOME.

Yeah, I dig the song. People are putting too much stock in a single song. You may not love it but, what exactly was going to work as the "single to save hip-hop"

Kendrick is a good rapper who will think outside of the box sometimes. No different from that Aaliyah song from Section 80
