>and i'm not even one of these mad old niggas on that 'hip hop >is dead' shit. there's still a lot of good music. what there >isn't a lot of is 'dope shit', which is different. (and no, >i'm not going to explain the difference to anyone who doesn't >know it)
Yep. I'll even say I've found a good amount of dope shit in the last few years. And this Droog shit DEFINITELY qualifies.
>yeah, i've made this exact same point several times, most >recently in re: bronson / ghost. they don't hear you tho.
LOL, yeah. I was even going to mention Bronson. I still bump early shit like "Dr. Lecter" religiously, but I'm very much aware that he's been making his own music that fits his own unique voice for about two years now.
>all i care about is the music, man. the beats and the rhymes. > >all the other stuff -- debating his marketing methods, or >trying to figure out exactly which TEMPLE OF HIP HOP >commandment it is that prohibits biting ("is he breaking the >1st or the 3rd?") -- i leave to ppl who still care about that >sort of thing. i just don't, man. maybe 20 yrs ago, but not >now. too much other real shit going on. music is music.
Yep. In 1997 I was on some "Abandon all hope!" shit. Then I just decided to ignore the shit I don't like and focus my energy on enjoying the stuff that does move me. Listening to music is still a huge part of my life, but I've got a wife, a dog, a job, taxes, rent to pay, all that other shit. I ain't got time for hand-wringing.
>and i have no problem w/ anyone who legit thinks the music is >wack. that's fine, all art is subjective, we're all entitled >to our opinions. but if your only issue is HE SOUNDS LIKE NAS >THAT"S BITING? cmon. it's like, if you found out tomorrow that >this was in fact an elaborate hoax and that it actually was >nas on the records, would that make you like the songs more? >they'd sound different to your ears? what sense does that >make? judge the music on its own merits. why do you need >additional information to figure out whether or not you like a >song?
Which is of course the core of the issue here. Some people REALLY wanted this to be Nas, because that means he was going back to the '94 shit. Personally, I've been fine with the dude's output throughout the '10s (Distant Relatives and Life is Good and the various other loosies and guest appearances), so it's probably why I wasn't invested in it like that. But yeah, the music manages to be good on it's own.
>what'd you have?
Turkey chili. The wife made a batch of it on Monday, and I've been enjoying it all week; it's got a good kick too. Plus a pistachio macaroon and a pluot from the Farmer's Market. Ah, domestic life...
