still expecting clear channel to give them the type of music they claim they ant.
meanwhile there are several ny rappers making a splash all over the place.
and not just veteran artists. perhaps one day you'll make an attempt to find out who i'm talking about.
or perhaps you're content in being disappointed in a scene that doesn't need your sympathy.
it's your life.

but that's a buncha garbage

it's not up to me to stroke NY's dick until i find something i like

your town can either show and prove to the rest of the world or fall back and do itself

i think the dudes i've heard are wack for the most part

i have no need to explore your city's output when there's better music coming from pretty much everywhere else

and i reserve the right to talk shit about a city that was once the mecca of the culture but which ate itself from the inside out because of that classic inability new yorkers have always had to be humble

i'd LOVE to hit some of the jazz clubs in NY if i ever go there tho.

across the globe (the acts i'm talking about)
not sure what your local scene is doing but yea
so its not about stroking anyone's dick (smh)
i'm just telling you there's a lot of ny acts doing their thing out there
and just because YOU don't know that it doesn't mean it isn't happening
i don't know how you consume music or get cues on where to find new music
but i can name at least 7 acts that have solid enough followings that they
only rap for a living from ny.
the problem is ny is also the epicenter of the recording industry
newsflash: the local ny scene no longer runs the hip hop that comes through 'the industry'
so everyone expecting ny to be running shit the way we did for 30 years prior to
the industry discovered the rest of america (as far as hip hop goes)
good luck with that

odds are some of these artists you're talking about i have heard and i just think they're wack (or wack compared to the high bar that NYC set for itself from the 70's through the 90's)

out of that list i actually like ka, sean p (not checking for albums or whole projects cause he's so one note but he's the go to guy for dope guest verses), parhoah, droog (not really now tho)...

i dunno

trying to think of any dope producers out of there but drawing a blank, detroit, LA and DC really have that on lock

i mean one of the dopest producers that actually lives in New York is actually from MD/DC, DMV really kinda kicks NY's ass these days but y'know, i'm biased...lol.

just NY rap...and the Yankees, i hate the Yankees more than anything else in that city. Mets are cool though.

and i virtually worshiped NY hip-hop for years and years and years...

maybe it's all the annoying NYers that move down here and play high post clouding my vision

anyhoo, gotta say again that i fully respect you riding for your town, that's how it should be.

i've seen a lot of bad shows/performances, this didn't appear to be one of them.

plus, it being his first show, i'm not sure if you're expecting props and fireworks and shit. background dancers? hell, it looked like a good old fashioned hip hop show. he even had a DJ who was on point with the cues. looked like they actually planned some shit instead of him just getting up there and winging it.

at least that's what *i* gathered from that small clip. *shrugs*

what are we(/you) expecting of hip hop performances?

i dunno, think of one and think of the other and think of which one's better

of course you're comparing a youtube vid to a scene you were actively involved in so i guess it is kinda an unfair question

The silence you hear in the clip is the sound of Droog's lyrics flying over people's heads. Seeing that live takes some of the luster off that beat flip too.

i have never seen him live in person myself though
so i don't know how long he sucked for
but he has definitely improved

*a friend of mine told me he was once booed off the stage in st kitts
he was down there for a music festival that they have every year
anyway he was so drunk when he was singing one mic that he
got down on one knee and put the mic out for the audience to sing the words
lol
that was probably a low point for him and not the norm tho lol

that was the day of the bad dust storm too. Pharrell couldn't belt out a single note (not a good singer to begin with, but still) because of that dust. Nas was even finishing Jay's lines when he popped out. he's def improved a lot since then.

maybe i'm being delusional, but i don't think they *released* it with the thought that "hey, i sound like Nas and i'mma let people think that until i get a buzz, so i'mma deliberately not put my face on the album cover".

(not to make this about me, per se...but) i've put out a few projects and none of them have my face anywhere on them. i don't think that's a disingenuous move, it's an artistic choice. i'm sure you have a few pieces out there without your face on it as well.

i DO think he took that speculation buzz and ran with it because i mean...it got people buzzing. *shrugs* i'm not certain if i think it's corny or not. in this 2014 music climate, that kinda buzz is hard to obtain. i'm really stuck on if i think that was a clown move...i don't know. what i DO know is that the kid AIN'T Nas and i didn't think he was from jump. *THAT'S* why i'm not mad, nor disappointed. i peeped early on that he never (as far as i could tell) said "nigga/nigger" once.

that's evidence (c)

the biggest thing though...i like the music. that's more than i can say about a lot of "hip hop" out these days. *shrugs*

for me it REALLY isn't about race
i have no problem giving a white person props for being able to rap
but you can't tell me he NEVER heard 'damn this shit sound like nas' EVER at ALL when
he was recording that shit. i am not buying that.
as a matter of fact the mix sounds like it was purposely distorted to make him sound MORE
like nas
then ridding the internet of all previous shit he had online
only to release one freestyle from a few years ago
being vague and not really setting the record straight until he had a show lol
he says in the video 'hey it got me a sold out show, right?'
i don't buy the obliviousness he's trying to sell us now

i never thought it was Nas, so i don't feel burned.

YET...he definitely did play up the Nas angle, especially with using the same sample as One Love.

There are plenty of old songs of mine that were online at one point that you'll never find again, if you ever wanted to look (I'm not deluded enough to think there are more than three people who would...LOL).

I dunno. Artists outgrow their old shit, take it down, etc.

I think Droog just heard the "Is he Nas buzz?" and thought "Um...okay?" and rode the wave to a sold out show. As hard as it is to get heard in any hip-hop scene, let alone one as competitive as NYC's, I can hardly blame him.

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)

Is dairy the voice? Whoever created froyo decided to include dairy. You can't choose what your voice sounds like.

Answer the question, though. I'm just curious.

If you think froyo tastes good, would you not eat it just because it's sort of like ice cream? If you don't like him because his voice reminds you of Nas, what do you want him to do about it? If it's something else besides the voice I'm not getting because I'm not into Nas on that level, let me know.

makes you think he's biting Nas? I'm not being facetious, I really want to know. I don't care if you like Droog or not, and in this case just pretend I've never even heard his music before. I just want to hear why you think he's biting Nas if it's not his voice, because that doesn't constitute biting to me if his music stands on it's own otherwise. Even just saying you don't like Droog because his voice reminds you of Nas is a perfectly legitimate reason.

I'm sure you'll just resort to name calling though instead of presenting your argument like an adult.

I just wanted to hear if you had any reasons for being so mad about it besides just that "he sounds like Nas". It's not like I'm some superfan either - I like the dude so far, but that's about it. You don't have to be so defensive, I'm just trying to understand your side more. I guess you said all you're going to, thats cool.

I agree that he shouldn't have rode the "Is it Nas?" hype train quite so hard. Now it kind of seems like he was deliberately deceiving people. He should have cleared the air after a couple days. I still would have enjoyed his EP and probably checked for him in the future.

But then you just deleted your reply anyway, so.

Sounds like dude really gets open off the classic 90s sound. I dig Droog, I don't know why so many people in this thread are dissing him. Yeah, I hear the Nas influence, but I hear Nas influence in Elzhi as well and El is still one of my favorite rappers to come out of the 2000s.

where Volor Flex flat out said he starting out as a Burial "tribute act" and then grew into his own thing, still influenced by burial, but his own thing

If Droog was straight up saying "Nas is the GOAT, I completely mimmicked his style to start out because he's my favorite artist ever, but I will grow into my own thing as an artist", that would be fine by me

but for him to say what he said in that video is ridiculous. i can't support acting like he doesn't fully know it sounds EXACTLY like nas in some place.

Kid is DOPE.

Bronson is cool too. He's not as dope as Ghost
just like this kid is nowhere near Nas' level.
I don't think AB sounds THAT much like Ghost anymore,
Droog sounds more like Nas than AB sounds like Ghost.

But they both make NY hiphop that aounds like NY hiphop.

That's more than I can say about a lot of NY artists.

Reason I knew it was never Nas was very simple:
If you gave Nas a sheet of lyrics that Droog wrote
and the same beat - they would deliver the rhymes differently.

Actively looking for reasons not to like shit in this day and age seems like an exercise in wasting time. Dude is dope. His EP is dope. The tracks he's released since his EP are dope. That's all I'm looking for.

I'll also add that all artists go through a period where they sound like their influences. Most of the time, we just never hear it. It the case of Nas, we actually did. I remember the first the time I heard "Live at the BBQ" I thought, "Damn, this guy sounds exactly like G Rap." I thought it was dope, but he still sounded G Rap. Then, one day, he didn't sound like G Rap on his records anymore; he just sounded like Nas.

As for Droog, I figure Mass Appeal will probably re-release the EP with a bunch of the Soundcloud loosies on it either late this year or early next year. After that, it's the end of the beginning for him. I don't know if he'll keep sounding like Nas or if he'll make the successful transition to create his own identity. I just like the music that he's making now.

I'll stop here, don't want to get too long-winded while I'm enjoying my lunch.

and i'm not even one of these mad old niggas on that 'hip hop is dead' shit. there's still a lot of good music. what there isn't a lot of is 'dope shit', which is different. (and no, i'm not going to explain the difference to anyone who doesn't know it)

YOD imo is dope. i'm not gonna try to find reasons not to like his shit. it's senseless.

yeah, i've made this exact same point several times, most recently in re: bronson / ghost. they don't hear you tho.

all i care about is the music, man. the beats and the rhymes.

all the other stuff -- debating his marketing methods, or trying to figure out exactly which TEMPLE OF HIP HOP commandment it is that prohibits biting ("is he breaking the 1st or the 3rd?") -- i leave to ppl who still care about that sort of thing. i just don't, man. maybe 20 yrs ago, but not now. too much other real shit going on. music is music.

LBVS.

and i have no problem w/ anyone who legit thinks the music is wack. that's fine, all art is subjective, we're all entitled to our opinions. but if your only issue is HE SOUNDS LIKE NAS THAT"S BITING? cmon. it's like, if you found out tomorrow that this was in fact an elaborate hoax and that it actually was nas on the records, would that make you like the songs more? they'd sound different to your ears? what sense does that make? judge the music on its own merits. why do you need additional information to figure out whether or not you like a song?

Yep. I'll even say I've found a good amount of dope shit in the last few years. And this Droog shit DEFINITELY qualifies.

>yeah, i've made this exact same point several times, most
>recently in re: bronson / ghost. they don't hear you tho.

LOL, yeah. I was even going to mention Bronson. I still bump early shit like "Dr. Lecter" religiously, but I'm very much aware that he's been making his own music that fits his own unique voice for about two years now.

Yep. In 1997 I was on some "Abandon all hope!" shit. Then I just decided to ignore the shit I don't like and focus my energy on enjoying the stuff that does move me. Listening to music is still a huge part of my life, but I've got a wife, a dog, a job, taxes, rent to pay, all that other shit. I ain't got time for hand-wringing.

>and i have no problem w/ anyone who legit thinks the music is

Which is of course the core of the issue here. Some people REALLY wanted this to be Nas, because that means he was going back to the '94 shit. Personally, I've been fine with the dude's output throughout the '10s (Distant Relatives and Life is Good and the various other loosies and guest appearances), so it's probably why I wasn't invested in it like that. But yeah, the music manages to be good on it's own.

>what'd you have?

Turkey chili. The wife made a batch of it on Monday, and I've been enjoying it all week; it's got a good kick too. Plus a pistachio macaroon and a pluot from the Farmer's Market. Ah, domestic life...

YOU like and know art of many kinds.

YOU know why originality and authenticity is one of the
most cherished things in EVERY form.

YOU know why plagiarism is the BIGGEST sin in any artist
or thinker's craft.

Bronson or Droog aren't guilty of *plagiarism*.

But let's not pretend that sounding *exactly* like a well
regarded artist is just another random idiosyncrasy of
the world.

It *is* a problem, and defending it opens a gigantic
slippery slope....and YOU know where it ends.

YOU know it in film.

YOU know it in literature.

YOU know it in music.

And no -- this isn't about "influence."

YOU know the difference.

....and by that i mean his style is VERY similar ...i got no problem with what I've heard so far though ...from the 5 or so songs i checked over the weekend, he's doing some very dope music .

Did Jay Electronica get the same level of scrutiny?? He remind me of Nas as well a few years back.
