beat-tape ish....to some that may seem digressive, but it's what I want to hear from him right now. An upgraded "1983" would be lovely imo.

I can't wait for this.

Got a feeling it's gonna be more CosmoG than UTQC.
REALLY HOPE he stays away from the trap drums
that he's been messing with. For those wanting Murphy,
he said Murph will be on this album but not in a way you'd expect.

Don't want any rap features on here unless utilized in a way
like he does with Thom. But if he's got Kendrick on here, hope it's
a 5 minute journey.

Don't know if the Herbie Hancock album morphed into this album
or if he's doing a Brainfeeder jazz trio type thing w/ Herbie,
Thundercat and himself for a later release.

Hope we get a taste of the album soon. Been dying to hear some new FlyLo.

What if it's a harder edge and busy like Cosmogramma
w/ Thundercat all over it? Would you like that more?

Is there a specific sound you'd like to see him strive for?

Were you the guy on here who thought Cosmogramma
was the greatest thing since sliced bread? No shots...
Just asking. I know somebody on here thought it was the
future of electronic music (SO DID I) then blasted him when he put
out pattern and grid world EP.

I love UTQC and CosmoG. I hope this album is a little bit
rougher around the edges and coloring outside the lines more.
UTQC has a real clean sound. I appreciate it because it was
different for him. We were used to a wall of sound calibrated
just right that it wasn't overbearing and just straight up NOT WORKING.

I hope You're Dead flirts with that again.
Push it to the limit to where it almost feels like
its all about to fall apart, but then it just sits there
in this wonderful groove, running on all cylinders.

no. I let artist do them, and I voice my opinion on its quality on here or other online places

nope. I think that was All_Stah. does he even post here anymore. I love Cosmogramma. it's a classic to me, just like Los Angeles was. I never heard the Pattern=Grid EP. UTQC was too meandering and "pretty" IMO

>I love UTQC and CosmoG. I hope this album is a little bit

true

okay. I wouldn't call Lotus' efforts wall of sound. maybe collage of sounds. El-P is more wall of sound IMO

I wouldn't mind that either. but as some one said above, I wouldn't mind more "beat-tapey" shit either

W/o Lotus and his peers Dibiase, Samiyam, Black Monk, Ras G among others taking Dilla, Lib, Dadelous, and Perfuse lessons and making them their own thing. Sample and loops chopped to pieces and burried under frenetic or white noise, a faster bpm (to some extant) and harder (or better mixed) drums

In other words Los Angeles was the next logical step for beat tape shit IMO

I appreciate his quote on it being about the afterlife and that could make sense. But I'm not really feeling the artwork if that's the case though, and it seems like a slight rip off the Laurel Halo art stylistically (I know that's a broad stroke with the japanese style but meh).

but i have faith in steven lotus to form something cohesive and focused. here's to hoping this album is good. that art is killer and the guests seem to be at the very least interesting and most likely able to make meaningful contributions to the project

In response to Reply # 0

This is the Brainfeeder collective jazz album
he was talking about. I'm sure he's still
got some other stuff with Herbie and it may see
the light of day, but a lot of what was going on
with that had to have morphed into a FlyLo solo record.

The 10 second clips and the quotes about it's
just the beginning sound like him saying
making these little beats that ya'll like was cool
but I'm about to take my label and my music
and go elsewhere with it.
Time for me to reinvent the FlyLo sound.
And in my opinion, maybe even the label
if artists he fucks with say
Oh shit, he just jumped to another level, I gotta catch up.

Officially HYPE.

In response to Reply # 0

"Kendrick Lamar is one of the guests on Flying Lotus' new album You're Dead!. In a forthcoming interview with Pitchfork, Flying Lotus revealed that Kendrick has also recorded verses over several tracks he had previously set aside for his own Captain Murphy album.
"...We've been working on stuff together," he said. "I went on tour and he recorded to a bunch of my songs. I don't know if he's gonna use them or not, but he recorded a bunch of stuff, which is why there's no Captain Murphy album out yet. He took all my beats!"
When asked if he was just waiting to see which songs Kendrick uses and which ones he doesn't use, he responded, "Yeah! At this point, I don't even know! But he took, like, 12, 13 of my tracks, man. I think he recorded all of them, too. I just don't know if they're ever gonna see the light of day."
A second Kendrick feature was also supposed to make it on You're Dead!, but had to be removed for "political reasons," Flying Lotus said. Update: He clarified on Twitter that "it's all love":

End Swipe

just a huge fan. but i'd listen to the albums in chronological order

Los Angeles
Cosmogramma
Until the Quiet Comes

and then check out his EP's, probably the 1983 and Reset are good ones to check out.

And then of course the Captain Murphy to hear how dude raps.

consider this a warning

Kendrick and FlyLo is a MF'n problem!

off the heels of FlyLo's set at the FYF

he played Never Catch Me and the Snoop jawn*

I was blown AWAY!

it was everything

the opening and ending of the song were all things FlyLo

with the beat reaching a steady vibe for Kendrick's verses in the middle

if what has been reported is true

that Kendrick took all of FlyLo's beats for his next album

WATCH THE F OUT!

he's coming for that Yeezus spot!

*he lost me toward the end of his set with the Captain Murphy thang

he's a competent MC

but I feel like that is something he should have been doing from the gate

if he was going to do it all

I prefer my FlyLo without him rapping

but the tracklist only has 2 appearances for Captain Murphy

so maybe it will lend a good change of pace

but 20 min. of him on the mic was too much

his stage show was incredible though

regardless of opinions regarding 'Ye

I actually respect his body of work, and his willingness to TRY different things...

...and that was what I was alluding to with Kendrick working with FlyLo

coming off of the success with GKMC

the easy route would be to get the hottest producers in the game

make an easily digestable follow up

etc...

but from what I heard...

...alot of people AREN'T going to like it

it was an incredible piece of music.

but, as you can imagine with a FlyLo project, it will be too much for some of the fans from his previous works

he has an audience now

and it sounds like he's more inclined to challenge his audience

and himself

instead of just cashing in on his recent success and taking the easy route

that's what I meant.

now, if KL's follow up is full of FlyLo tracks, as has been mentioned

AND it sells

yeah, I think he is literally going to take 'Ye's spot

as the biggest artist in hip-hop

if the follow up sounds like I think it will

AND moves units

the Watch The Throne era will be officially over.

but I just think Yeezus was a lazy album that was released under the guise of "trying something new".
I actually appreciate when artists do something new and creative... love it, actually.
I just do not think that's what Yeezus was.

Of course we will just have to agree to disagree there, but with your belief that it was brilliant,
I see what you're saying.

Def something have to listen to at once, only 2 or 3 songs
you can single out and play out of order.

Def a 40 minute journey, highs and lows, twists and turns.
Intense. I can see why he said it started out as album
of just hard jazz breaks.

Was worried about the rap features but they don't stick out
like a sore thumb and if the Captain Murphy character is
utilized like it was here, I'd be excited for the direction
that album would be going in.

FlyLo is maybe my fav artist so I'm probably biased,
but this is a FANTASTIC album. The instrumental album
will be a fun listen for those that don't like the vocals.

Need some more time with it to realize all the detail.

Can anyone point me in the direction of an artist, group, band
making similar music today?

What albums in the past would you guys compare this to?
I'd say:

Soft Machine - Thirds
Herbie Hancock - Sextant

to name a few come to mind.

I think the leap hes made on this album is the biggest of his career. He's gone so far into Prog sounds with the guitar stuff on here, and Thundercat is just destroying the bass game as far as I'm concerned.

If he's got a contemporary, I need to know about them. Just the idea that Snoop Dogg is on album, that also has a track like "Moment of Hesitation" is fantastic.

(i've not heard "you're dead!" in its entirety but everything i've read about it seems to indicate that it's a modern jazz fusion album)

but

and you knew there'd be a but

well actually there are a few

the biggest for me has been my biggest complaint about lo throughout - inconsistent mixing. i'm thinking tde laid their hand on the kendrick track because it's the clearest out of the bunch. but it's painful for me to hear all these amazing ideas reduced by shitty mixes.

biggest one for me is bruner's drums. whether recorded or sampled they all sound like shit recorded in his bedroom with a pillow in the kick drum. they could sound so much better and then fit so much better in the mix.

kendricks verse is cool but i coulda done without the snoop and murphy vocals.

if i hear thundercat do that same run again i'm going to poke somebodies eyes out. don't get me wrong it's dope, but he over uses it.

that said he should practically get co credits on this cause he put in work.

but they both suffer (probably just to me) from the same issue around their signatures, and because of the way the album is they stand out so much. lo's timing changes on the hats is just so predictable these days. and because they aren't going anywhere different it just stands out.

these things in essence standout as solos which would be interesting except all of the other texture elements are really holding it together and almost outshine the flourishes.

there's some duds in the middle.

i don't think i'll ever hear edgy music from either one of them, which is probably my biggest problem as a listener not being willing to let that go as the edge is what drew me to them both.

all of that said (and i'll probably say more later) it's a great body of compositions and well deserving of whatever praise it gets.

The drums

The thundercat runs

Man I really didn't like the start of the album, maybe it will grow on me

There was a pretty good stretch of songs in the middle

I'll give it a few more chances but it's not great on first impression. In contrast, that sbtrkt hit me a lot harder on the first few listens

And the mix quality is just a fucking bummer, like wtf I can't even turn it up in the car without crackling like shit

I was wondering if it maybe was just the leak and it'll sound
better on vinyl and the mp3 codes that come with the vinyl??

On first listen, I was just so excited to hear a new album
by my fav artist. But after repeated listens, I'm feeling like
I've got some of the same problems you've got: the Thundercat
runs, the FlyLo drum patterns are like you said, predictable...

That was ehat originally attracted me to him so much, his drum
work was just so different from anything I'd heard. Now?
A lot sounds the same. And speaking of sounding the same...
I feel like some of the songs sound very similar.

As far as the vocals, the 4LP comes with instrumentals.
Hoping to hear what's under those vocals more clearly with the
instrumental album version.

Hoping the leak isn't the audio quality we'll get on the physical
release and mp3 codes but not sure - people said it was 320.

And dunno if Lo sampled whatever Bruner laid down on the drums
but you're right - sound muddy, there's no pop to them.

Hey, took me over a year to come around on UTQC...
We'll see with this one. I love the direction he went.

BUT! I did expect to hear more FlyLo signature work mixed in with
the Thundercat, live drummers, guitar work, Kamasi on sax, etc though.

DADDY KEV mixed this album, he's mixed all the FlyLo records,
a little FY for those that maybe wanted to know and didn't.

Would love to hear your thoughts again after you've sat with it some more.

Yeah, I don't know what the fuck is going on with the mixes on this album. I remember FlyLo tweeted saying this album was bounced to tape after being mixed on an SSL. I don't if he mixed solo or along with DaddyKev or whoever but the album often sounds harsh in high end, extremely muddy, and overly compressed and limited.

edit: listened to the itunes previews and the leak is definitely fucked up. itunes ones sounds way better.

>kendricks verse is cool but i coulda done without the snoop
>and murphy vocals.

the snoop track was possibly the worst song he's ever done imo. It's all over the place.

I really want him to make an album by himself. fuck leaning on all his talented jazz musician friends and singers. I'd like him to lock himself away alone (no Captain Murphy) and make something that pushes against and breaks through his limitations and habits. But, l like you said, I doubt it will happen.

I like Flying Lotus' early stuff but not so much the trippy slow rock shit but the jazzy stuff I do like so, basically from the snippet trailer of "You're Dead" it sounds like a promising album but not much of the weird sensory overload type tracks (that I love most) though.

Love the direction he went with this record. I don't necessarily have a favorite FlyLo album, although I'd probably saw I like Cosmogramma and his last one more than Los Angeles. This one is already up there with those two, and might even be my favorite of his.

That track is VERY Outkast sounding... I thought so too. Kind of reminds me of 'Liberation.' It has that dark and mellow but deep funk sound to it.

That shit would have been so so terrible. I'm obviously happy that didn't go down like that. Honestly, he may have not been close to death, but just felt like it. But if he was, I hope he stops effing with the drugs that can kill you like that.

It's like seeing God!

a couple of thoughts

I can't help but be reminded of and then you shoot your cousin

People killed the Roots, myself included

but the format of you're dead is the same, IMO

you take an ep's worth of songs...on both they're about 4-5 actual songs

and the artist guides you through the album parts in between

It's so dense, with so many sounds, I'm having a hard time digesting the whole album in 1 sitting

it feels like a double album, IMO

the first part ends after Coronus, when my head usually explodes

and then the second part is the remaining songs

GREAT F'N ALBUM!!!

you can't understand it with an explanation

I am floored because "You're Dead" is fantastic from start to finish.

And so firmly rooted in the traditions of jazz through that I was completely shocked. I get George Duke's vibes with this album... and he does succeeds 100%. To go from the murky, jumbled, nebulous and, IMO, headache-inducing sound of "UTQN" (and, frankly, too much of his other work for me to be a full-on fan of his) to "Fkn Dead" and "Turkey Dog Coma" is a fantastic and welcome change. I've always preferred his work for other people to what he's does for himself. Not this time.

There was NO point where I felt a song was out of place; in fact, from the sequencing to the theme in sound, it felt like a musical journey. A complete work that's very focused but surprisingly low-key. I easily got lost in the album - in the best way possible - and that rarely happens nowadays. Can't even name a favorite song because each piece of the album fits together so well. I would say the Whole > Sum Of The Parts.

He doesn't deserve to but... I'm thinking he may lose some fans with this album. The ones who care more about bass than rhythm may very well hate "You're Dead." But I didn't like that Flying Lotus a whole lot, anyway. I like THIS.

Unlike y'all, I paid for it.

This dude is managing to annoy the shit out of me and
I barely hear him talk.

Thank god he can't actually rap. He'd make Kid Cudi sound
like M.O.P.

WAY too much emo. And I like passionate music.

But this is irritating me a tad.

I'll let this stew for a minute, give it another
listen, see how I feel.

Incredible artwork.
If I was at the record store and had no idea who FlyLo was,
I'd buy You're Dead based off the album cover alone.
I do that once in every 4 trips to the record store -
buy one album based off cover alone.

I like the instrumental album more. Not that I find anything
wrong with the Kendrick feature, or the Snoop one, or even
Murphy singing on The Boys Who Died in their Sleep....

Just like the non vocal instrumentation of the album,
only problem with that is, tracks that have little vocal features
from Niki Randa, Deradoorian, Laura Darlington - are nice little
touches on the songs on the vocal version of You're Dead.

So the mp3 codes allow me to mix and match different versions
of the songs and make my own edition of You're Dead - subtle
changes to my final version of You're Dead.

Still think the mix is a little suspect. But it's a real fun listen.
It's in contention for album of the year for me right now.

specifically addressed by FlyLo before the album officially came out.

as for your other dilemma, i like what he said here,

I love the music presented but it doesn't sound finished to me - like it's a soundtrack without its counter theme. Seeing the video for "Never Catch Me" helped get across what he was going for and songs like the "The Protest" reassirt that in a way at the end but the journey. To me this is supposed to be a soundtrack to a sort of brilliant purgatory/afterlife but there are no sonic ties throughout the album to ground me as a listener for the full duration. So many disjointed ideas that somehow seem to linger in one mood without any real melody. I say this as someone who appreciates free jazz and would love to see it implemented more with an electronic mindset, but this album lacks melodic grounding. Even the greats of free jazz knew to have some thematic grounding AND emotional fluidity.

I appreciate his vision but he did not flesh it out completely IMO. Too much motion and not enough fluctuation of emotion aurally.

I don't consider this a misstep in any way and have played it back to back to back on many occasions (due in part to its length).

I didn't love the album, but def appreciated it at the show

Thundercat came out and killed it to open with a keyboardist and drummer - was disappointed he didn't do Oh Shiet but a great act overall - showed the kids some motherfucking fusion so I was down

But Lotus tho -

Was initially disappointed that he was only playing a DJ set but he had great visuals and kept the energy playing for an hour plus - didn't go before Cosmogramma as I could tell but a lot of the album sounded better at the show (particularly the Murphy/Snoop song) and it sounded like he played an unreleased Kendrick track. Been a while since I enjoyed a concert this much and between his 4+ albums and Captain Murphy he certainly has quite a discography to play around with. happy to see him next go round

If anyone ever wondered what the hype for Kendrick was about, I'd point to that. the dude has come a LONG way.

and with FlyLo.... man.

UTQC
YOU'RE DEAD
CosmoG
LA
Pattern Grid
Reset
1983

maybe I switch YOU'RE DEAD! and CosmoG... gotta wait a few more years for You're Dead to know for sure. I def love the instrumental version of You're Dead! better than the vocal version. It just sounds more natural imo, flows better.

was def not considered his best work by critics when released.
Nor is it the album that makes people say,
"OH!! (insert album)" when talking FlyLo.

It probably sits what ya think? 4th? (CosmoG, You're Dead!/LA or LA/You're Dead!) if polled.

While I don't think the songs are correctly sequenced
and I wished he would've done something different w/ Erykah,
I just love the overall mood of the album.
The sounds, the textures...
The vocal appearances from regulars like Nikki and Laura.
The vibe gets me every time whenever I put it on.

me yesterday//corded is probably my favorite FlyLo song as well.

1983 is like his Organix to me.
Yes, both debut albums but some times don't even get mentioned as being the debut. I've read multiple articles on websites,
maybe even in a magazine or two where they've said LA is his debut - not just on Warp, but in general. And I know plenty people that
have never heard Organix - or think DYWM?! is The Roots' debut.

Plus 1983 is just eh. a lot of it sounds the same to me.

I kinda feel like FlyLo is the electronic version of electric Miles.
Their discogs are similar but in reverse:

LA = On the Corner
CosmoG = Bitches Brew
UTQC = In a Silent Way

You're Dead I don't put in that analogy though.
You're Dead is more Soft Machine, Weather Report, King Crimson imo.

Listened to You're Dead again yesterday
with the new release of the "remastered" album.

FlyLo and Daddy Kev heard the talk lol...

Man, that instrumental album is REALLY REALLY tuff bro.

A year later I like it a lot more.
And I can def hear the difference in the mix.

You checked it out?
