"Common - Nobody's Smiling (Tracklist/Features)"

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/nobodys-smiling-deluxe-version/id891974297?ign-mpt=uo%3D4

I see "Made in Black America" with Ab-Soul didn't make the album. That's the only track that really jumped out at me out of all the ones he's released since announcing this album. That's too bad.

"Speak My Piece" has a pretty dope beat (only complaint is there's a little too much empty space) but lyrically it's not very good, based on my first few listens.

Uncommon amount of features for a Common album. I guess it's the whole "Chicago" thing, since they all appear to be Chi-Town artists. Maybe that's why "Made in Black America" didn't make it.

it would be more accurate to say that the features are due to No I.D. affiliation, because Cocaine 80s, Snoh Aalegra, Elijah Blake, and Vince Staples are all artists he is working closely with. Even Jhene Aiko is credited as a member of Cocaine 80s on their Wiki page.

See:

https://twitter.com/SirElijahBlake
^ "DefJam Artist/Songwriter under Mentorship of No id #Artium #Rocnation"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shyne_Coldchain_Vol._2
^ Vince Staples' last mixtape, 6/10 tracks produced by No I.D.

tracklist:

1. The Neighborhood f. Lil Herb (CHICAGO) & Cocaine 80s (LOS ANGELES, BALTIMORE, CHICAGO, MORE...)
2. No Fear
3. Diamonds f. Big Sean (DETROIT)
4. Blak Majik f. Jhen Aiko (LOS ANGELES)
5. Speak My Piece
6. Hustle Harder f. Snoh Aalegra (LOS ANGELES/LONDON/STOCKHOLM) & Dreezy (CHICAGO)
7. Nobodys Smiling
8. Real f. Elijah Blake (LOS ANGELES)
9. Kingdom f. Vince Staples (LOS ANGELES)
10. Rewind That

Deluxe Edition Bonus Tracks:

11. Out On Bond f. Vince Staples (LOS ANGELES)
12. 7 Deadly Sings
13. Young Hearts Run Free f. Cocaine 80s (LOS ANGELES, BALTIMORE, CHICAGO, MORE...)

Anyways I haven't checked for a Common project properly in a while, but I am going to just because of the Vince Staples' features. I liked "Kingdom", not a huge fan of "Speak My Piece". We'll see how the project holds up. Hopefully it impresses.

I wasn't 100% sure on that...maybe I assumed they were all Chicago related BECAUSE of the No ID/Cocaine 80s affiliation. I knew they all had some connection to No ID and just made the broad assumption that that meant they were all (or mostly) Chicago artists.

Oh well.

so i'm hoping the features are not too heavy-handed

you can already tell that the Snoh and Elijah features will probably be R&B hooks, same with the Jhene Aiko feature.

Let's also assume that Track 1, featuring Cocaine 80s, will have James Fauntleroy on the hook.

That's 4/10 tracks with R&B hooks on the album proper.

Add 1 more if the Cocaine 80s bonus track is the same.

I usually don't care about this sort of thing, but I'd really like to see Common just hold it down with his rapping

It sucks to me that he went from one of my favourite rappers to the most anticipated part (to me) of his new project are the Vince Staples' verses.

Probly mostly r&b. But still - Comm recently has had one guest verse per album so this is heavy in that regard FOR HIM, even if it's not overdone by normal standards.

And yea --- I'm with you. I still love hearing new Common stuff cause I know I'll at least get *something* out of it. But he used to blow me away with every verse and nowadays something just seems...off. Like, on this Speak My Piece joint. He's making weird sounds and his flow is all weird, like he's trying to impersonate someone or give off more personality than he actually has. Just rhyme! You're one of the best ever to do it when you just rhyme.

So yea. We'll see.

I thought TD/TB was a good Common album but it only shows flashes of brilliance lyrically. I love No ID's recent work and thought most of the production was pretty on point.

But Comm just ain't nearly as lethal lyrically as he once was so I'm definitely with you for the most part in that assessment. I'll always buy his albums, but I've come to the unfortunate realization since about 2006 that he won't be blowing my mind lyrically like he used to. Oh well.

In response to Reply # 0

Damn did he feel like Ab-Soul outshined him too bad or what?
Goddamn, I hate when shit like that happens.
This man is still pretty underground (despite his main man being huge), and
niggas get an amazing verse from him and just leave it on the cutting room floor.
Smh.
Let the masses hear that shit, dawg.

but I was chopping it up with this cat who happens to be around Com's age,
and he was telling me he was looking forward to the new Com album...
but you know why? Because he heard the lead single on Itunes... not because
he's heard all these tracks we've been listening to. He heard what was commercially
released... like alotta people do... especially older heads. I think some of yall
forget everybody ain't on the internet every day looking for mixtapes and shit
that isn't commercially released. I turn people on to HELLA shit just because I'm here.
MAD people don't know what a Vince Staples or an Ab-Soul is... just turned my
homie on to Vince this weekend actually.\
Anyway, I say that to say it ain't about it being on the internet. Whether right or
wrong, alotta folk won't hear it without a commercial release and even still, some
folks won't even respect it.

Why is Common still trying so hard to make some commercial pop BS? Shit is just sad. It's not even good commercial pop BS. Take Big Sean's rambling ass off and the track is improved 10 fold, but is still ass.

Common's gone on record as saying that it's great that his acting career allows him freedom in making music because now the pressure's off and he can make the music he wants....

and THIS is the shit he comes with? Pandering for the "party" crowd talking about popping Crys' and shit like that? Jesus Christ. How the mighty have fallen. I thought this album was supposed to be about violence in Chicago. Dude sounds like Puff Daddy on this shit.

In response to Reply # 16

Is that he's made mad songs where he's throwing subliminals and blanket lines at a very clearly defined type of MC and then he turns around and either gives respect to MCs who fit the mold he was dissing or does songs with them.

I know Big Sean is part of Kanye's undercover brother team but he is the epitome of the MC Common spends so much time disrespecting in his blanket battle rap joints.

The hook on this song is beyond fucking awful and so is the last verse. Com's verses and the beat are dope and all he needed was a simple scratched hook or audio clip type of hook.

I mean I know people grow and evolve and change but Common's been pretty consistent in his view of MCs over the years and Big Sean, like you said, is exactly what he, allegedly, LOATHES about rap. So yea.

And I agree - I gave this song a few more listens and man, the beat is actually really subtly great, and Comm rips apart, at the very least, that first verse. The second one ain't shabby either. Literally Big Sean ruined what could've otherwise been a pretty grimey track. What an asshole.

Actually, I like it... expected something wayyy worse from what yall are talking.
And how is this an attempt at commercialism? This is just the shit Common been
on for a long ass time.
Just because he isn't spitting over-the-top conscious lyrics, he's trying to be commercial?
Do yall remember the joint with Nas about wanting "a bitch that look good and cook good"?
Sometimes Com likes to talk shit like everybody else. I don't understand why folks
put dude in that box.

Anyway, I fux wit the song.

...and realized that the sole problem with the song is Big Sean in every single aspect. That "hook" is one of the biggest pieces of shit I've ever heard. And his verse, like always, sucks.

Like someone already said, this beat and Comm's bars would've been better served with a 3rd Comm verse and a scratched hook...or really anything besides Big Sean. Like I'm legitimately curious about who sat in that studio and heard Big Sean orgasm out that stupid ass hook and was like "there it is! That's it. That's dope". I sometimes wonder if people are listening to the same thing I am.

I like the juxtaposition of his melodic rhyming with Common's spitting.
They coulda saved the "Aye aye aye, tryna get it errday day day" he sticks onto the end
of the 2nd chorus tho. That part sounds damn near impromptu and tacky.
They should have gone straight into the 2nd verse after the chorus was over, but
it ain't enough to ruin it for me tho.

That second to last verse is FIRE.

I don't listen to enough Big Sean to know whether all his songs share a similar sound, but I think that song sounds fine in the context of the record and he sounds fine on it. And Com's verses on there are dope. I'm happy.

On the main page and Common sorta touched on the fact that he and NoID did have a falling out after he moved to NY to get with the Soulquarians. Had to have been just Common feeling like he needed to move his career forward a bit and NoID feeling like maybe he was being left behind after busting his ass to get Comm started for 3 albums. Pure speculation on my part of course.

Anyway that was the best interview I've seen yet and it made me feel like I need to give this album an honest chance despite the mess that is Diamonds. Truth is Comm still has some damn good bars. Just too bad he wasted such a dope first verse on a song where Big Sean was essentially orgasming on the chorus.

We all need that around us sometimes... someone who's seen us at our best

Agreed - a few tracks stand out, but this album is so mish-mashed. Not the sort of LP that compels listens.

Vince Staples had the only memorable verses outside that line about Common being oiled up like a texan hollering at a girl that made me laugh out loud.

55. "Where's Pops at??"
In response to Reply # 0

Just listened once through. Many initial thoughts but I'll try and keep them short.

Comm's still got bars. The frustrating thing is that he just can't seem to figure out how to flow to beats as well as he used to. His flow is a little too choppy for my liking. But still, a lot to like in his lyrics.

The beats are not bad, per se. But a little too dark and brooding for the most part. Not something I envision myself revisiting unless I'm in a certain mood. That said, I applaud the fact that NoID and Common set a tone for the album and stuck to the concept. An album discussing a city's struggles SHOULD sound dark and brooding. So it's a lot like The Roots' last two joints in that I applaud the fact that they stuck with the theme with the musical landscape, it's just that this type of album doesn't reward repeated listens if you're not in a specific mood.

Also re: the production, I found that many of the beats in the middle of the album were kinda simplistic sounding. There seemed to be a ton of empty space. I dunno if NoID was following the Yeezus formula but I just was kinda pining for more. They lacked rhythm. Being dark doesn't mean you have to lack rhythm.

The Neighborhood is a fantastic opener and probably my favorite beat on the album. This is a good example of a beat that is dark (violins and such) but still has a solid rhythm to it. And not coincidentally it's one of the three or so songs where Common's flow is up to his usual standards.

Rewind That is a wildly dope concept and song. He answered the question I've always had about he and NoID's relationship and gave a beautiful shout out to Dilla with that heart wrenching story. Great stuff. I also didn't realize/know he had been touring with YNot/Twilight Tone. That's dope as fuck. Has anyone seen them? I def will.

The three bonus tracks are all really dope. Common beat up Out on Bond, 7 Deadly Sins is crazy good lyrically and musically, love the concept. Common did well with it. And Young Hearts Run Free is a great closer. Might be a top 3 track IMO.

Still upset Born in Black America didn't make the cut. And seriously, Pops would've been a great edition especially considering the album's concept. Lost opportunity there. Curious why he chose this album as the one to stop inviting him to close.

I did like the various little talking "skits" sprinkled throughout. Specifically the one about Dilla.

So in summation - really good lyrically, beats fit the concept, but I'm not entirely certain this is an album I'll revisit too much after the next couple months.

That's all I really like.
Believer / Dreamer is a better album imo.
I enjoyed that one a helluva lot more, more diversity in the beats.
I get this album was supposed to be a bit more moody and dark
given the subject matter and what's going on in Chicago.

I thought NoID got Com to spit more funky on the last album.
He experimented with different flows and brought whats prolly
his A game now, lyrically.

Some of the flows on this album though are laughable.

like the beats outshine him, loosen up C...his subject matter is very bland, in fact for the past 6, 7 years...a more personal & vulnerable approach would be perfect for this album...its a very cohesive album nonetheless....probably his best, sonic album since BE

I really like "The Neighborhood", the title track, "Kingdom", and "Young Hearts Run Free". "Rewind That" is a nice sentiment, and anything that pays tribute to Dilla is cool in my books, however, his flow and raps are pretty mediocre on it. "Diamonds" would work much better as a Big Sean song. Listening to it, I wait for his parts, as crazy as that is to type. "Speak My Piece" is cool and Common's fine on it but that too is a beat better made for Sean.

Oh, and not sure why the track with Ab-Soul isn't on here, liked that more than most everything on here.

Common is a sheep when it comes to Electric Circus. He let's the general public's view of the album cloud how good that shit is. Is it a great album? No but it's damn good and I hate to see him continuously diss that project.

I think it's less about the actual music than it is about the fact that he kind of regrets falling into the strange stuff he was into at that time. Maybe he's embarrassed about that period of his life and that album represents that for him, so he just doesn't like it by default. Cause musically, I agree, it's got its misses but overall that album was a great experiment and has aged well. And he was spitting like someone owed him money on that shit.

It reminds me of Dave from De La Soul saying how much he hates Buhloone Mindstate. I mean that's my favorite De La album, and I know it's many of De La's fans' favorites as well...but Dave always talks about how there was a lot of infighting and problems within the Native Tongues, so because that album came out around that time, he hates revisiting it. So something tells me that's why Common is how he is about EC.

The singer from Cocaine 80s contributed two dope hooks. Maybe he'll take over the hook-singing role from Dice Raw in The Roots, too. Heh.

I liked the dedication verse to Dilla on "Rewind That".

Com's third verse on "Diamonds" was FIRE.

This album is awful. Holy shit. Some of the lyrics are flat out cringe worthy.

"girl you the baddest, im givin you the Gladys, night you ever had its"

"like saudi, niggas carry Iron man like robert downey"

that dilla gave a tv stand narrative is embarrassing as well.

Common is utterly hopeless at this point.

Does anybody else find it weird that neither Vic, Chance or BJ where on this one? Not that they needed to be there but it sorta felt odd to not hear them on a Chicago-focused album.

I listened to it online on my shitty computer speakers and was like :/.

Listened to it on headphones and it sounds great. Kinda weirdit seems like the first 1/2/middle is a little weak then comes in really strong at the end.

I really like "Real" a lot.

Lots of the feel of the record with the guests, etc. feels like the recent Roots albums.

I feel kinda a Biggie vibe too7 Deadly Sins seems to be based on 10 Crack Commandments with the rap style.

Especially when you add in the bonus tracks. That damn "Out On Bond" is that
good Common I love to hear.

Aside from the fact that I fux with "Diamonds", I somewhat agree with your feelings on 2 - 6.
I don't think the songs are completely terrible, but they're definitely wind-down tracks.
Then number 1 is a decent album closer.

The site that was streaming it had the tracks up from end to beginning.
When I listened in the correct order, it didn't hit me as hard, because the actual
beginning of the album loses my interest in terms of an album starter.
Something about it in reverse is a better build up, the last track is a better
album starter, the tracks flow better, etc etc, imo.

I'ma just reorder my tracks from back to front.

Artist: Common
Album: Nobody's Smiling
Label: Def Jam / Artium; 2014
Rating: 7.7

By David Drake; July 25, 2014

Common exists in sainted territory in hip-hop: the rare rapper who's appeared on "Oprah", he's earned a default level of respect and can reliably release major label albums every few years, no matter what the industry climate. For many, Common's latest album, Nobody's Smiling, will hold a polarized position in the midst of Chicago's senseless violence, a symbol of all that is right in a genre too often derided for moral depravity and/or artistic bankruptcy. Others will cynically dismiss this latest effort, as Common hasn't lived in Chicago in years but is releasing a record capitalizing on the city's newly gritty national reputation. But Common's not interested in moralism, nor trendchasing. Although he writes a familiar snapshot of Chicago, its troubles seem a catalyst for his own creativity. The album's most convincing when tackling the push-and-pull conflict between the individual and his hometown, as Common's good intentions are buoyed by memory, generosity, and attentiveness to his craft.

Looming over the album is the specter of Chicago's gun violence and the music which first brought it to our attention; Common's 2011 album The Dreamer/The Believer was released just weeks before Chief Keef hit the national radar. So Nobody's Smiling displays some idealism-drain, its black and white cover art reflecting a stripped down sound. Common and longtime producer No I.D. aren't interested in competing with the street sounds emanating from his hometown. Instead, they go for a complementary feel, with old head-friendly percussive loops and blaxploitation rhythms ("Blak Majik," "Speak My Piece," "Hustle Harder"). Common's delivery has a loose, nimble quality throughout, his words tumbling out with practiced ease. His lyrics are writerly, internal rhymes focused on a history he can recall but which seems distant now: "Have you ever heard of Black Stone around Black Stones?/ And Four CHs, Vice Lords, Stony Island on Aces/ The concrete matrix, street organizations, they gave violations, hood public relations."

Common's approach here is to intertwine his own story with his memories of Chicago in order to forge a connection to the next generation. The use of a Biggie sample on "Speak My Piece" is emblematic; when Common was an emerging artist, the young Christopher Wallace spoke powerfully to the same state of mind Chicago's street rappers wrestle with today. "7 Deadly Sins", a bonus track on Nobody's Smiling, sounds like another way to integrate a mid-'90s street feel, complete with a "Ten Crack Commandments"-esque concept and Wu-Tang-recalling beat. Throughout, Common attempts to speak to everyone, offering bits of wisdom for a new generation while contextualizing for an older, outside audience.

This attempt at generational continuity also explains why Common grants a platform for a phalanx of strong guest stars to shine. Opener "The Neighborhood" features Lil Herb, a young street rapper whose memories of his era are more freshly etched in each bar: "Used to post up on that strip, I look like a street sign/ I been out there three days and I got shot at three times." Meanwhile, West Side rapper Dreezy's verse on "Hustle Harder" argues convincingly that she might be the best bar-for-bar rapper in Chicago right now: "I could be a lady in the streets, but in the booth I pull triggers/ Shots fired, I go harder than a nigga."

Other guest artists, like Def Jam signees Vince Staples and Big Sean, acquit themselves well, providing different points of view on the record's central conflict. Big Sean tones down the usual hamminess, perhaps due to the severity of the subject matter, and catches a slick behind-the-beat flow. But Staples stands out particularly: "Lean and took a puff and then she gave it to my father/ Used to take the bullets out so I could play with the revolver/ Satan serenading ever since I was a toddler." But it's poet Malik Yusef who nearly steals the show, appearing at the end of the album's title track and spitting an evocative piece that captures the album's real central paradoxes: "Now I see how my daddy felt the dark day he discovered that black power didn't keep the lights on." "They drilling on my land but ain't no oil to be found / I might be part of the problem." He hits especially hard while engaging with wordplay in the differences between "shy" and "Chi": "Are these celebrities way too shy to be loyal to the town?"

The album's closer, "Rewind That", is one of Common's most personal records in quite some time, reflecting on the ups and downs of his relationship with No I.D. and meditating on the loss of J Dilla. He addresses his own conflicted decision to leave the city and people that so greatly shaped some of his best music. Truth is complex, and the popular manichean tensions don't map out so predictably atop "conscious" and "gangster". That's true for street rappers themselves, who have to navigate an ever-increasing divide between their lives and those of the communities who propelled them to fame. And it's true for Common, too, who had to leave his home to continue his career, and for whomnearly two decades laterfinds that the decision still weighs upon him. Nobody's Smiling is driven by the search for this common denominator.

Common can do some corny lines, but he would have to struggle pretty hard to put out the lyrical garbage that Kanye does.

Like Yeezus or not, that album actually had a unified sound. This one is all over the place. Some of it is pretty great, some of it just grates.

Black Majik and Nobody's Smiling could have been throwaway instrumentals from Yeezus. There are a couple other examples, but those two take the cake.

Been listening to it for a couple days now.

Good tracks are:

The Neighborhood - Not digging the 808 intro. Never been a fan of their sound. Aside from that, it was a good song to start out with. After hearing the first track I thought it was only going to get better. Was actually disappointed.

Kingdom - Weakest of the 4 that I liked. But it wasn't as bad as the other tracks on the album.

Rewind That - Classic, Soulquarian-Era sound that I miss. Last track on the official album. I notice he doesn't put his pop on his albums anymore.

7 Deadly Sins - Shame it's given the "Bonus Track" treatment because it's the best track on the album. Since it's a bonus track not everyone will get to hear it.

The rest were throwaways to me. Sounds like he's trying to stay relevant by putting some contemporary elements into his album. I'd rank it a little after TDTB:

1. LWFC
2. EC
3. FF
4. BE
5. ODIAMS
6. TDTB
7. NS
8. RES
9. CIBAD

This sh!t is dope. Common sounds hungry, NO ID brought it. Updated their sounds without pandering.

Is it on his top tier of Res/One Day/ LWFC/ Be? No way.

But its definitely on the next tier.

Com is one of my favorite emcees of all time, but he has ALWAYS had corny lines and questionable/pointless songs. That shouldn't be new to people.

And truthfully, Diamonds isn't all that bad. Is it that much worse than Go? Or some of the cornier songs on Finding Forever?

Only track I wasn't feeling was Hustle Harder. But is this track more pointless/corny than say...Testify? Or even Payback is a Grandmother?

Its just wierd to me how the Lesson hates everything Common/Kweli/Mos Def do but the Roots somehow release a classic every time. And their the ones that really fell off. This place is like bizzaro world sometimes.

Of course he's gonna talk it up now.

Give it a year or two and he'll give a true, realistic, honest answer. But imagine trying to promote an album and being like "mehh it's probably in the bottom 3rd of my catalogue - but I had fun makin it!!"

i am amazed that that horrible shit made it out of the studio

there just cannot be a moment of complete & utter wackness of that level on an album and it be considered an overall quality project

That song is horrible to me. Tracks 2-6 is pretty dull but the back half of the album is strong. The 13 track version is what I'm speaking on. The 10 track version is a waste of money.

The album is dope to me.

Big Sean and Hustle Harder are the only two things that could go.

I can rock with everything else.

Common has spit a few questionable lines from day one so I'm not sure why people are acting surprised...I thought that was part of his thing.

Shit, if this was a Clipse album produced by The Neptunes, these cats would be screaming classic.

Hustle Harder is dope

&

i listened to Be right after this album yesterday & Common sounds *more* hungry & on point on this album (Be's still a great one too)

imagine that, a rapper being even better at spitting than he was 10 years ago

guess that's the real reason why Jay wanted to rhyme like him

out on bond is my SHIT. Only about 2-3 songs I can't rock with, and of course a few corny common lines. The highs are higher than his last two albums for me, but FF and TDTB were both dope overall to me.

man, ariana's last album brought me back to those babyface/pebbles days (probably cuz babyface worked on it). bought her new one based on that, without hearing any of it prior (besides the singles). who knows, maybe i'll regret it...

...but apparently, the possibility of regretting my ariana grande purchase outweighed my desire to buy common's album!

gambling with a young female pop star > gambling with one of my favorite mc's from back in the day.

damn.
