"How are people like Freddie Gibbs getting good production."

That Pinata album is hard to listen to once Gibbs starts going. Another reason Midlib is not top anything.

Usually, in order for production or lyricism to be acclaimed, the entire package has to be celebrated.

His point is that Madlib gives beats to mediocre emcees that in turn make mediocre projects with great madlib beats, so no one really checks it out like that.

It makes sense if you think of what your favorite songs are production wise. 95% chance that the songs you think of are dope in every aspect

Still, when talking about how great a beatmaker is, we're talking about the
beats alone. What you describe above is how to preserve the sheep mentality
of talking about who sold more and whatnot.

If the entire package not good people probably won't check for it. That's the bottom line. I'm not discussing commercial acclaim. I'm talking cats that we would consider serious music listeners.

Wack beats with great lyrics rarely gets spins.
Great beats with wack lyrics also rarely gets spins.

Spins = radio term

And loads of songs that arguably fit particularly the second of those categories have gotten spins.

Even if you mean spins to mean playing in your house (which isn’t where the term comes from), a lot of people have personal classics where either the beat or lyrics outshine one another. Off the top of my head, Tried by 12 comes immediately to mind. On the other side of the coin, I won’t be listening to the instrumental to Remain Anonymous any time soon (although I think the beat is decent enough in the context of the song).

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)

I don't need to be apart of any clicks round here that requires one to think that everything Madlib or El-P does is the greatest. Bottom line is Piata has outstanding production but it's ruined by Mr. Gibbs which fucks ups Madlibs track record lots of his work has shitty people rhyming on it.

Gibbs has been getting great production for 7 years now and it's because he's been pumping out a top 5 flow for nearly a decade.

it's not rocket science. so you don't like one great rapper, no need to brag about it. it's embarrassing.

i'm not going to try to convince you that he's good; just interested to hear the specific things that cause someone to dislike him

and lib has produced a ton of tracks for middling-at-best rappers, but premier and timbo have done so, too. his (or anyone's) production legacy can't be marred (fairly anyway) by the rappers that rap over his beats

but it's a right combination of smooth beats and smooth flows on this album so I can see why folks would think his lyrical game has stepped up alongside Madlib's production.

when really it's just a course correction from the detour that was those two years under Jeezy.

"you guys! i listened to all the stuff you used to listen to! check it out!" his beats sound like knockoffs of actual rap producers' beats (see: "stolen youth"). full disclosure: i haven't heard the entirety of "watching movies..." but the few tracks i did hear discouraged me from listening to the rest of it

edit: i can't believe they still haven't fixed that subject line quotation bug bullshit

Guess the white backpack movement gets a pass round here. Gibbs hasn't made anything as good as watching movies with the sound off.

LMFAO

Mac Miller's last album was good though, but to be honest thats mostly down to the production, though he did step it up lyrically. The production was nuts though, was really surprised I wasn't straight up hating something by him, like I normally do...moving on....

still doesn't change that in my opinion what you just said is ludacris though. El-P is like infinitely times the better rapper....

to each his own I guess

Cmon man...

I get it- you want to hear more positivity in your music. I don't knock that...(though I'm inclined to point out art imitates life and there's no sense putting our head in the sand to the evils of life...but I digress...)

Instead I'll just point out that you like a lot of wack sh!t too.

You seem to give some of these bums a pass just because the subject matter is more to your liking.

I could make the same argument that Ugly Heroes dudes didn't deserve the production AB hooked them up with because they are simply BAD at rapping.

Like...not good. At all.

I mean...wouldn't even be in this rap sh!t if their skin was a different shade bad.

I just don't get how someone who likes rap music can listen to Pinata and write it off because of the "negative" content.

Your music library must be VERY small...

And your movie collection....

Must not read the paper or watch the news...

etc etc.

part of the reason why I could never get into Gibbs' projects that had lesser production. I never saw the complexities or nuances in his content.

Possibly one of the greatest replies to a post in the lesson ever...

Also Caramanica agrees -> SWIPE from NYTIMES

The old rap star metrics of greatness? Future has no use for them. In his songs, he employs few true narratives, no real wordplay or punch lines. He raps mainly in free associative snippets, which, taken as pure text, can read as mundane.

But what Future excels at what makes him an undeniable star is his gift for emphasis, and his ability and willingness to rewrite his vocal approach. He doesnt toy with character like Nicki Minaj, modern hip-hops peak changeling, does. Rather, he fiddles with structure on a phrase-by-phrase basis. Hes interested in mode over content, or rather, mode as a means of content.

More than anyone, he has used the frictions of modern hip-hop to his advantage he is a rapper and a singer, a technologically aided aesthete and a raw emotional purger, a street-centric braggart and a hopeless romantic. Hes idiosyncratic and identifiable enough that hes become the go-to man for bold collaborations hes softened the edges of Rockos menacing U.O.E.N.O. and Lil Waynes Love Me but also collaborated on heart-melting love songs with Rihanna, with his fiance, Ciara, and even with Miley Cyrus.

In so doing hes become the genres first fully post-Drake, post-808s & Heartbreak star. His voice is one of the threads that unifies the hip-hop mainstream, and his second major-label album Honest (A1/Feebandz/Epic) demonstrates as did the excellent Pluto before it how what might in an earlier era have been solely an accent piece can now be the centerpiece.

Lyricwise, Future tends to latch on hard to a word, an idea, a phrase, and work it over and again until it sticks. He does this on songs about drug dealing and on songs about relationship bliss repetition for him is an effective tool. He complements that by choosing emphatic production, with roiling drums (notably by Mike Will Made-It and Nard & B), or smoothed-out floating-synth backdrops with hints of elegance (few producers love an ominous, stark piano more than Metro Boomin three of his songs here feature them).

Those are the parts, the standard pieces of hardware that almost anyone could work with. Then Future really gets to work. He can switch vocal styles at the drop of a hat, and sometimes seems to be juggling multiple voices at once, as on Special, where hes wistful, sleazy and tough in quick succession. On I Be U, theres the quickest flicker of a Prince falsetto before Future eases into full-on Zapp computerized self-harmonizing. On Never Satisfied, he switches midsong from a digital croon to a melodic shout, and the chorus of T-Shirt sounds as if its rapped through a paper bag.

(And this is to say nothing of his experimentation with flow patterns, notably on two bonus tracks that serve as playgrounds for Future to deliver syllables in unexpected agglomerations.)

Honest features two of Futures clearest forebears on back-to-back songs Kanye West on I Won, a duet in which both men rapturously celebrate their better halves, and which has faint echoes of Drakes maladjusted lonely cretin anthem Marvins Room, followed by a pro forma Drake on Never Satisfied. Both Pharrell and Andr 3000 serve up verses about renouncing material pleasures. Future is flexible enough to accommodate all of them.

Even if not everything on this album pulses with full intensity the back half of it lags Future is generally magnetic. In part, thats because of the constancy of his voice, which is impassioned and reassuring. Even when hes at his most indignant, like on T-Shirt and My Momma, his voice is unflustered.

The rise of Future coincides neatly with the almost complete removal of vocal aggression from mainstream hip-hop. The radio teems with tension-free voices, with almost no rasp or bite to them the slurry mumbles of French Montana, the inward-looking semi-spoken-word of Kendrick Lamar, the catatonic boredom of Wiz Khalifa, the utter neutrality of Kid Ink. Lil Wayne is more given to croaks than barks, Jay Z is the sound of interest-accruing bank accounts and Kanye West sounds petulant but never harsh. And theres Drake, of course the genres reigning king, and its chief defanger.

There are a handful of exceptions YG, or even 2 Chainz, though hes more enthused than enraged but mostly, Future is something of the Platonic ideal of the modern rising hip-hop star, providing his own melodies, and using software to sandpaper off any rough edges.

The sound of Atlanta, and by extension, the sound of hip-hop, has evolved from carnival barker to deadeyed corner boy to narcotized dreamer, leaving older models of success like those of Lil Jon and Waka Flocka Flame in the dust. Now Future has his own spiritual children fellow Atlantans like Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan who clearly see in Future what the new standard for greatness is.

i know he SAID its deep but ... i dont care what these dudes say

look, Gibbs has some depth to him .... he has good imagery & there are moments in his rapping where a deeper side is clear or showing thru the tears in his super-thug suit

but its all overly outbalanced by all the gangsta cliches he spits

i enjoyed it for a few listens then it just got old & annoying

not sure what else to tell you

By the end, the implication is she is pregnant with Gibbs’ kid, but is staying with the other guy because he’s better for her (and who presumably will think the kid is his). If that’s not a deep situation to you, I can only shrug?

Because a bunch of people disagree with you as to his skill level and also he has managed to generate a decent amount of buzz somehow.

On a more interesting note. Why do people respond with so much venom if you have an opinion about an artist that is different than them?

Its the same as buying Livin' Proof only for Premier's production. Though i'm not insinuating that the production on Pinata is anywhere near as good as the production on Livin' Proof. In the end, Lib thought Gibbs was dope and that's all that matters.

He has an unparalleled work ethic by modern standards.

He can rap and is a studio rat.

He GRINDS his ass off so of course producers fuck with him.

People wonder why Nas never gets these awesome beats for instance,
but then you see the list of producers he's working with. There's never a Madlib
on his projects. It's gotta be mainly the rappers' (or rapper's labels) fault if
they ain't on some good production.
If you wanna hear a really nice rapper on really good production tho, check out
that new Vince Staples tape "Shyne Coldchain II". I really don't know how more
rappers don't have projects like that out right now.

He’s close to to top of my list of MCs I’m supposed to like but just can’t get into. I’ve tried. I recognize the skills, but he’s monotone and not that engaging to me.
