Anyway, I feel like this is a futile effort but ...

"Selling out," when it was in use, was a term that meant contradicting the things you claimed to stand for in the name of making money. So, for example, someone campaigning against large, evil corporations in their music then doing a commercial for CocaCola.

The Roots, in your example, have made happy music for a children's movie. They are all men in their 40s, most of them family men. I don't recall them making any anti-children's songs in the past but maybe you can enlighten me.

This is just such a stupid conversation to be having with someone who claims to be an adult in 2014.

If they hadn't been, they wouldn't have lasted past 1996. Like it or not, the majority of America is white so in order to succeed for any length of time in the entertainment industry you need to make them smile or dance. That's the way it's always been. By your logic, every artist and/or entertainer in the history of America is a sell-out.

Hence why this term died a fiery, well-deserved death over a decade ago. People like you couldn't even figure out what it meant.

As an example, you're white. You have been a member of this site since 2007, presumably you've been listening to the Roots since before that time. Didn't they make you smile a couple of times throughout the years? Peace.

Anyway - The Roots have never once struck me as a band who ceased control of their creative license, as you imply. They are family men themselves, and made a family-friendly song for everyone. Hardly "selling out."

and when they dont (see: lyin ass bitch) they get "put in their place" apologize & promise the bossman it won't happen again

i will say as ive said before that, aside from the Tipping Point & mayne HIGO, they have not compromised their music on their albums

i mean, for every Al Green record there's a weak watered down pseudo "protest" recod like that John Legend garbage, but not their own LPs for the most part

hope they have fun backing Rick Ross or whatever other rapper they're told to play for at that BET shit

Anyway, I knew the effort was futile. This whole thing is funny coming from a white dude.

But yea - anyway. They answer to a boss (like most people on the planet) for one aspect of their wide-ranging careers. And it appears to me that they still kind of do what they want in that regard so I'm not too worried about it.

"Selling out" he calls it. Aahahahah.

way of discrediting what I'm saying without burying your own argument. You literally stated that you think the definition of "selling out" is "making white audiences smile". I stated (correctly) that The Roots have been doing this since the beginning of their existence. Therefore, that would mean that The Roots sold out from the point they formed the group, meaning that your argument that they just now sold out is flat out wrong.

They were always doing it on someone's terms. The label's, NBC's, whoever's. And they still always kept some semblance of their creative freedom, whether on their albums (which they probably had to apologize for or explain at times) or on their show with things like "Lyin' Ass Bitch" (which, as you said, they did apologize for).

So now they're selling out just because they appeal to more people? You want them to remain a small time touring band? It's like you *want* them to remain poor and struggling. Some fan.

And the crux of your argument is that they "sold" out....the very definition of "sold" involves money or some type of trade.

I guess the real question is, what would you prefer that The Roots have done with the later years of their career to remain afloat?

Anyway. Seems to me that you simply dislike their recent output and/or The Tonight Show. Just say that. This "sellout" term is for people who don't understand career trajectories and normal American business. And maybe you just don't like America, too, which is also fine.

In response to Reply # 88

is an idiotic term used by people who think no deeper than surface level. It is a hollow and thoughtless term which is why, outside of a couple simple people, it has mostly been rendered obsolete in discussions about artists. And thank god for that. It requires absolutely no context outside of "I don't like what they're doing," the main reason for the lack of context potentially being that NONE OF US are privy to the Roots' contract(s) now or in the past, nor do we truly know the hows and whys of what contracts they signed and who they work for.

All we know is the final product in front of us, and it's more than fair to say "I don't like their work on The Tonight Show" and/or "I don't like their music post-_____ (name album here)" but to call them "sellouts" is not only outdated terminology, but most importantly it's uninformed and ignorant, at best.

i had no issue when the Roots first took the gig, i was curious to see how it would flesh out & happy to see a group i was a fan of get the regular exposure

at this point i dont see it that way

Branford said he left bc he felt he was relegated to sidekick status & wanted more control over the music on the show

he compared himself to Rochester and Leno to Jack Benny

no, you're wrong

im not trying to shame them

im not saying they should do what i want them to do

but i am saying that what theyve done to this point does indeed meet the criteria for selling out, a criteria i did not create, but learned about from rappers themselves

now we can ALWAYS get down to brass tacks & analyze whether rappers ever tey cared about such a thing or if it was always just a fabricated selling point for their records but we cant deny it was a highly influential line of thought in the culture, one that questo himself was ready to go to war with until (apparently) Biggie got killed & his guilt chamged his whole approach

We're all here to argue our opinions aren't we? And people over the age of 15 using the term "sell out" to refer to artists who've just outgrown them or simply stopped making music/art they enjoy is something I happen to be passionate about.

in this silly ass opinion I'd say that I'm pretty happy feeling like it's an outdated and ridiculous term to continue using.

So unless you're a one man revolutionary who has specific ideas you can outline to overhaul America's way then I'll be happy to continue pointing out how "loud and wrong" you are.

you're right...NONE of us have those kind of options. i'm assuming you wouldn't, but i definitely would take the job if offered. i guess that's where we differ.

>i could be wrong tho

That's a good place to start, because you are... mainly for determining what
selling out is for black artists only, but continuing...

Overall, your statement comes across like this wouldn't be an issue if they were
a white band... which is actually pretty fucked up, because you're expressing
an oppressive mentality here in putting them in a box due to them being
black.
This is the kind of box black folks put other black folks in when we say someone
can't play a role where they wear a dress or something... yet no one bats
an eye when a white dude does it... there are many other examples of this
mindset. Ultimately, it's limiting, restrictive and oppressive... and I hate to
tell ya, but you being white and saying it is like... *holds up 'stop' sign*
You are being the oppressive "white man" you're talking about.

Being a happy black entertainer is not some kind of shameful occupation.
Hell we been through enough shit, we deserve to smile. This is a small
symbol of the kind of equality we've fought for.

anyone who was listening to ral music in the early 90's is well aware that "selling out" was a big no-no

was it ever a genuine ethos?

no not really, but it was certainly stated to be such repeatedly and by many artists

In response to Reply # 162

yknow, frankly, folks have a right to be unhappy

this borderline fox news mentality where unhappy ppl are dismissed as dissatisfied personally & flawed as ppl instead of considering how the conditions & ethos of post modern capitalist america cause alienation & dissatisfaction inherently

ill even put my tin foil hat on for a sec & say that this is exactly why songs like that Pharell tripe are heavily promoted & pushed by large media conglomerates...to shame ppl who are not "happy" enough, who are refusing their proper dose of societal soma

but damn if i say it you could slap me right here

Good thing black people have philpot around to let them know what they should like and what they should do.

why would I need a new argument when I caused you to admit something that should clear up (to those who need clarification) how you should be viewed by anyone who values this site?

I did an effective job of getting you to reveal your mentality with that admission above.

Yes

do you value the free exchange of ideas or do you only think ppl should be allowed to openly express themselves on their own "property"

what if i went on Facebook & dissed Mark Zuckerman?

out of line, right?

very interesting & borderline fascist response from you to this post, certainly exposes a good bit about how you think sir

Bottom line is: We adults know Questo isn't thrilled with this site

but....

most of us are who regulars keep coming back to it daily or almost daily

so...

it's immature to show disrespect to Questo since we are getting something from what he's doing (keeping this site up)

That's just reality for folks who can't/won't front this this is a place we WOULDN'T want to do without (unlike the games the OP is playing - and he should be known by now as one who uses this site to play LOT'S of games).

survival in the USA could be called a sell-out.

That's not saying there is TRUTH (little or none) to a judgment call like that.

I'm saying it is disrespectful to say any African-American who is not being "anti-establishment" or "pro-black enough" or whatever to "survive" is "selling out"

I really don't know why anyone would entertain someone "reaching" like that as being appropriate, esp. as we enjoy the benefits of the endeavor in question.

Saying that you dislike The Roots latest album, or thinking they come across as corny on TV, or saying you hate the show? That's criticism. Calling someone a sellout, that's disrespectful, because you're speaking on intentions/character. If that's your opinion, that's your opinion, but it's still disrespectful.

People criticize The Roots' work all the time here, but there's a difference between that and calling them sellouts.

I kind of agree. I'm not mad at them for taking the Jimmy Fallon opportunity. It would have been kind of crazy for them to turn that down. And I'm happy that they're making a good living.

But-

I am a little salty because I feel like one of my favorite groups/MC's are being wasted playing walk on music on an unfunny talk show. I wish they were still touring. I know they are still making music, but honestly I haven't really felt their last couple albums that much.

they were, therefore, being hypocrites with that one line.

So as I said above, by your logic they've been selling out since the day they decided to form a group and sign with a record label.

They should just work and give all their music away for free. Then they'd really be sticking it to the man, and keeping philpot happy.

must be your philosophy, which is fine

but you can't reduce two different situations in two time periods to the same dogmatic black & white criteria

well, YOU can, but most folks clearly understand the difference between a Geffen recording contract for a rap band signed in 1994 and being the house bamd for the Tonight Show in 2014

..between what would it would have been like working for someone like NBC and The Tonight Show in 1994 and how it is now, for a black band, in 2014.

And they also know that Geffen was still owned by MCA in the early 90s which would still mean that The Roots technically worked for a major corporation to distribute their music.

to be sold by major corps in 2014 is entirely different than the situation in 1994 due to reduction of competition, homogenization of mass culture and, maybe the most significant thing, the utter fear of "stepping out of line" that has been conditioned in the public post-911

I am not at ALL shielding the Roots from criticism. I'm shielding anybody from the term "sellout" because it's fucking worthless and thoughtless, and doesn't make any sense in this day and age.

If you read what I said above, I am more than happy to discuss your thoughts on their music and your disagreement with their career choices. If you find them corny, their music awful, etc. But you started this thread with an outdated term which doesn't make ANY sense in the landscape of current entertainment so I called you on it. That's it.

I mean, you started a thread almost literally to say "I'm now ready to call the Roots sellouts because they made a song for children".

Deep thoughts by philpot.

with THAT line he's saying the inspiration for the MUSIC is contractual and money makin'. he's criticizing cats for making what the record company wants and not from a place of true inspiration

that song is about doing the art from a place of love

how does the fallon gig make that a contradiction?

i'd argue that fallon pays the bills so they can have MORE say on the direction of their CDs as it allows them to not have to worry about paying the bills by compromising their musical vision

undun was a sellout album?? they made that to make money??

_now_ it's time?

they've been the house band for fallon for years, but

now is the time.

the roots are doing their job - and it's led to a lot of great musical moments. sometimes, in doing said job, they may perform songs that aren't to your (or even their) liking.

that happens with jobs, at times.

and it hasn't seemed to affect their own output. that they're still going at all is likely because they've been doing fallon. plus it looks like they're having fun.

saying that they've sold out is just silly.

but i cant be too mad at the direction theyve taken

yes they seem to be thinking more about the indie rock kids than before, or that audience that prob likes the roots but not many other rappers, but hey, they have a market. it does pander a little to what most peoples ideas of the roots are, i.e. intelligent, political, conceptual, not like other rappers, etc. and black thought seems to have been forced into this category. but they have become their own genre in a way.

i dont necessarily like it that much myself but its their own path, and theres usually a few songs i like on each album. and while i dont wanna play it that much, the undun was good and interesting for what it was.

I really don't think it's possible to "sell out" as an adult. But if it was possible, then The Roots doing a late night gig is allowing them to do the exact opposite of "selling out" as artists.

I think they balanced creative/sales driven goals very well throughout their career. But there was always a sales driven aspect there - just like there is for any artist on a record label. But doing a late night house band gig is essentially like them taking a day job - they are no longer reliant on sales of their albums to put food on the table. Which means they are essentially freed from the sales driven part of their album goals, and they can release whatever they want to artistically. Now the other side of them taking a "day job" is the fact that they have a great deal more exposure than they would have before, and that likely has a side effect of them being able to sell more albums than they would if they weren't on TV every night.

Think about that - if the Roots WANTED to "sell out" as artists, they DEFINITELY could at this point. They could release an album full of huge mainstream guests and do some music similar to what they might do in some of the Tonight Show sketches and come out with what would likely be their biggest selling album. Have they done that? Not at all - they dropped undun. A concept album telling the a tragic story of the streets in reverse. About as far as you can get from a "sell out" commercial release.

i like Undun a lot

HIGO was pretty close to approaching "appealing to the hipsters that still buy records" status but it was still an ok record

RD was a pretty weak rehash of their previous album

but i would like to see them be as uncompromising as they were on Game Theory again

regardless, you can "sell out" in some ways & not in others

you can play the fool for the white man on TV and put on a different air for your "art", i get that

but really, why the assumption that they could secure the budget to make an album w/ all the big names of today?

bc you just said they could, but how do you know the label would let them or want them to do such a thing?

maybe the label sees the value in them being a "balanced" act that can back Ross on TV & Summerjam while maintaining the faux-underground status on their own records?

same or lower budget than what they currently use. I believe Quest has posted in the past about how their budgets are typically pretty high because of the quality they go after in terms of recording, mixing, etc.

But if they wanted to do a "sell out" album? They could easily call in favors from some of the guests that come on the Tonight Show. Album budgets don't have to be nearly as expensive now as they did 10-15 years ago because you can have guests record their parts at their own studios and send the tracks online to be mixed. Would the label back them on this? I bet Def Jam would be GLAD to hear about them doing an album built to sell a ton of records.

But they aren't doing this at all as I've previously mentioned. Their next album & Then You Shoot Your Cousin definitely doesn't sound like a sell out record.

As to your other point about doing a late night show in and of itself being a "sell out" move - I definitely don't agree. If "selling out" is possible, and we look at what that term really meant, I think it's more about contradicting yourself to make money. (For example, put out a diss record saying that it's wack to be singing on the hooks of your rap songs, and then a couple years later release a rap song with yourself singing on the hook.) I don't see them being on a late night show as a contradiction at all. I don't see the Roots as ever being some anti-establishment, anti mainstream, conscious group. The closest thing to an example of that would be the What They Do video, and that video was making fun of artists that compromise their MUSIC with cliches to sell records. As we've already agreed on, the Roots haven't compromised their music at all.

philpot, if you want to keep exploring this thought in earnest, you need to address the key point he's making here, which is that the Fallon gig is essentially a day job that lets them keep making the music they want, when they want. Just because what they do for Fallon is musical doesn't mean they've compromised Their Music, if you follow my meaning. I work a day job too and the money from it funds my underground metal label. I smile for my bosses, because that's what a day job entails. I don't see it as hypocrisy or selling out - I see it as being a grown-up who needs a certain amount of financial stability to keep doing what he loves. If you think something in the gig itself is contradictory to their stated beliefs and goals as artists, then cough it up.

This is a debate we MIGHT have been able to have...what, MAYBE ill give you early 80's/late 70s, before music venues became corporate entities, you could still sell records and actually make money off them, and punks were putting out their own shit.

Now you can't even say that you are keeping it real by just performing live for audiences; second you make it easier for people to get tickets on lets say ticketweb, etc...

I mean, it's odd considering how much you champion against the shoot em up, bang bang, where I can argue despite the "IT'S THE WHITE MAN/JEWS/GAYS INFLUENCING HIP-HOP" argument most of those regional thug rappers do quite well putting out mixtapes of ignorant music without any real record deals.

Who hasn't sold out in your opinion that's not a regional/local act?

116. "Have they really, though?"
In response to Reply # 0

I'll say this once and only once, and I'll bail out of this thread permanently, as is my norm. The Roots are a band. They've played a wide range of music and a wide range of roles. What are you having issue with? The fact that they are a band, a group of working musicians who are capable of playing and have always been capable of playing, a band who has only become stronger in the last 20 years... I mean, I love "Datskat" and "...Desperado" but did you only expect for them to play the same song over and over? Did you only want them to be the band only known for "Proceed", "You Got Me" or "that Seed song that white kids like?" Did you want ?uest to be the guy who played on that benefit record of "What's Goin' On" with Britney Spears?

In 2014, in order to be a strong artist and more important artist, you have to play all avenues. You cannot remain in one place, especially if you are to be mainstream or on the mainstream fence. The Roots are much more than what you hear on vinyl, CD, or MP3. They're doing TV show themes, they could easily be making bumper music for The Weather Channel for all I know. If they brought back MELROSE PLACE, Kirk could be the guy doing all the emotional guitar solos. Poyser... I mean, what does he not do?

My whole point is, if you wish for an artist to be stagnant and dormant, if you wish for an artist to not be lively, find that artist and enjoy everything they had done. In fact, the version of The Roots you and others seem to like is the band that did what you valued, what brought you to them in the first place. Enjoy that version of The Roots. The Roots have grown since PHRENOLOGY, and they're expanding. Did you see the live performance they did on LATE NIGHT that was a web-exclusive? Fucking mindblowing. You don't like the fact The Roots are not only "the boom bap", but that they have melodies and countermelodies? Then listen to the version of The Roots that you enjoy. No one is forcing you to like The Roots. No one is telling everyone to like every single thing they decide to do. With that said, there are many who have chosen to stay with them for the duration, those who enjoy the different changes, shifts, textures, and whatever. To me, they are sharing their musical knowledge, and it is an expansion of the kids who listened to records in their bedroom. No one in hip-hop has ever done it on this level, and if you can't understand that, that's fine, you can choose to like your version of The Roots. The version of The Roots I like are the guys I get to see every weekday, the band who gets to fly over to Europe or Japan to rock crowds, the band who gets to play with whomever they want and even if I don't like that artist, I consider it an expansion.

In the end, "your" Roots and "my" Roots are the same damn Roots everyone likes and hates, and it's okay to have haters. It only means you've worked hard enough to tick someone off, and being irksome is energy that could be used somewhere else but is being directed at them.

Arguably, you can say they "sold out" when they changed their name from The Square Roots to simply The Roots. You can say they "sold out" when they signed with DGC. You can say they "sold out" when one member left and another game in. You can say they "sold out" when they incorporated a horn section. You can say they "sold out" when ?uest stopped falling asleep while eating McNuggets. You can say whatever you want, and that is a part of the legacy they continue to create. Even the good words I say is a small part of who they are, a very small part. They're going to do what they're going to do, regardless of what anyone else thinks and as a fan, I have chosen to show support all of it. They asked us almost 20 years ago if we wanted more?!!!??! Yes, and as long as more?!!!??! can be created, I want to hear it.

You've used the term 'the white man' while being a white man.

You've accused a specific black person of cow-toeing to white people (while being a white person) which is extremely inappropriate and offensive. And done this while being a guest on a webpage that said individual designed for people to use for music discussion.

You've implied that black people should have no interest in a Disney movie called 'Frozen'.

You've insisted that one who disagrees with another person's politics is somehow invalidated if they appear on the same tv show together. Y'know...just because someone is on a tv show does not mean they are endorsed by the house band. And I can't believe I had to say that out-loud.

You've also implied that one cannot be critical of media while supporting Barack Obama.

Seriously though....You should consider why, in real life, you might hesitate in lecturing a black person about being a sell-out and for 'shlepping for the white man'. You've never done that in real life and you shouldn't do it behind the cloak of your internet username.

Desus who's the comedy king of "Black Twitter" broke Twitter today by revealing that he's a white man. The angry white champion of hip hop character that Phil plays to the hilt comes off impressively as brilliant on some levels and insane on others.

Let's take a step back here.

For other white posters.....would you EVER consider saying 'You're a sell-out who's shlepping for the white man' to a black person in regards to their employment? I'm guessing that's a NO across this whole board except Phil. And let's be real, the fact that Phil is white is what makes this kind of thing completely insensitive and offensive.

For black posters....how would you react if a white person (in an attempt to be 'conscious') said something like that to you in regards to your job? Would this be acceptable in real life?

On top of that...he's directing this racially insensitive insult at the person who built this place and pays for us to visit here. I'm not saying that we shouldn't be allowed to criticize Quest. I'm saying we shouldn't be allowed to make insensitive, insulting, racially-charged statements about him. And that's what this is.

I mean, if Phil called Quest an uncle tom....is that ok too? Cause that's basically what he's doing here imo.

No, I wouldn't. I raised an eyebrow at that as soon as I opened this thread. Calling Quest a sellout is one thing, but all the barely-veiled jabs that are basically calling him a shucking-and-jiving Uncle Tom? That's overstepping all kinds of boundaries. My feeling is that only blacks should speak on that to other blacks. What in my experience qualifies me to say something?

but it aint far from the truth.. And they "sold out" years ago, now they boot licking for Fallon.

I mean, the way BT shux & jives to every lame joke says a lot.. Considering BT himself is a rather stoic, no nonsense, introverted personality (in his music at least)

Quest is now the safe, catch all negro encyclopedia on everthying Black & "cutting edge."

A lot of their previous socio-political stances were said out of short sightedness cus they never imagined they'd be the media darlings they are. Now instead of just owning up to it, they & their fans cop uneccessary pleas, sidestep the issue, and label it "hate."

Cant really knock the hustle though. The Roots have paid their dues in this rap shit and are now being rewarded handsomely for it. But lets be honest with ourselves, and call a spade a spade, ppl

w/o it there is no positivity

review this thread

my "asshole" post gave space to multiple fans of the band to explain why they disagree, why the Roots are still great and to make great points about areas they have not compromised in and what selling out even means in 2014

there's no need to feed *into* the negativity you perceive, but you have the chance to push back against it, and if i didn't want ppl to be able to do that, i would've kept the thought to myself

it was just time for me to exorcise this viewpoint of mine and as i said, let the lesson "have at it"

Bill Withers once said something to the effect of "If I went into a record store, the best thing would be for them to be sold out of my music"

Im pretty sure you didnt mean selling out was a good thing (i.e. Im happy for them), I just wish they could do Fallon and make classic Hip Hop which might be selfish on my part

If albums with Betty Wright, John Legend, Al Green and Elvis Costello didnt cement it, ?uestlove's book makes it painfully obvious he's moved on from Hip Hop at this point. He might perform someone's music when The Roots are a backup band, but his love for competing and impressing with albums has come and gone

with any hope this post will spark something in him, but I wouldnt hold my breath

I think you have the Roots pegged as some raging anarchists who are burning down govt. buildings and shit. …I just don't see them that way. I do see them as one of the few "popular" hip hop acts who do truly "do what they want" and sometimes that means taking a chance which you may not agree with, whether it's "Birthday Girl", "shilling for Obama" (your words) or whatever. Some of these things I don't like either but I still think their albums are great.

For whatever it's worth, I think they're still dope and still can and do make quality music. If they're on Fallon and it's "wack" (to be honest, I don't even watch it…or TV in general..that' a whole nother post), I won't watch it. If they do a song on an album or soundtrack and it's "shitty", I won't listen it. If they end up doing more wack shit than good shit, I probably won't listen to them for the obvious reason. But I don't think they're at that point at all…

I just think you're kinda pigeonholing them to be the "hip hop rebels" and they do have that element at times…but I also think they are (and continue to strive to be) way more multi-faceted than that.

Because it's inappropriate for you to call out black people for 'selling out to the white man'. That's a debate for black people to have amongst themselves. It's not for you or me. You arrogant prick.

And I'll explain a little more. Quest is a black man and has to face certain things that you and me don't. That is why you are an incredible asshole here. Because you are judging the way he makes his way through obstacles that you have the privilege of not having to deal with. You cowardly little internet monster.

It's so easy for you isn't it? You can sit on a perch and say "Questlove is schlepping for the white man" while he tries to earn a living as a long-term, life-long musician. So easy to judge everyone's integrity when you're not the one who has the burden of their struggles. And then utilize a platform that THEY finance and maintain....INTENDED FOR YOUR BENEFIT....to insinuate that they are a 'house negro' or 'uncle tom'. An accusation that any white person who, y'know, actually interacts with black people in real life....KNOWS should never come out your mouth.

The only type of white person who would say the type of shit you're saying here....is someone who got a really complicated identity problem. Are you here to exercise some sort of a deep-rooted yearning to be black? I'm old enough to know that there is no such thing as a white person saying this shit unless they live an incredibly sheltered life and desperately want to be someone they are not. We are witness to your vicarious identity.

i'm kinda with the original poster...it's interesting seeing how The Roots have evolved. but they still are pretty much my favorite group, the reason being that i judge them by their album work. all that other stuff means nothing to me...as some have said here, if they keep pushing their albums creatively (i dug HIGO and undun), then i'm with it.

they could easily just put together an album of the "hottest" pop acts today and call it a day...but to me, they take their craft seriously. to my ear, they have not compromised one bit on the quality of their sound and for that i still rock with them.

i'll put it like this....if they ever REALLY change like, say, the Black Eyed Peas did...only then would i be quick to give em a look. but even still, while it would be heartbreaking, i can't knock folks for getting and earning that money. ain't nothing wrong with that and making lots of folks happy. ain't nothing wrong with stability.

but yeah..it's a music thing for me...

it's interesting to see how times have changed. remember when we gave crap to ATCQ for doing a sprite commercial???

but i can understand where the original poster is coming from....i mean even i cringe when my college girlfriends (who i so desperately tried to get to like The Roots back then) say to me, "You see what Tariq did last night?"....and then a moments later have no idea what i'm talking about when i mention the name "Black Thought".

it's sad...but that's how it goes....times change.

BEP added Fergie and changed their whole style up (i maybe the only person who liked Elephunk, i thought it was cool). but they sold out, and i'm not mad at them. they werent making $ like before the move. Roots still in the same lane and making money, they OK in my book.

and maybe what c71 was alluding to (sorry, I couldn't read past much of that back and forth)

if you don't like it, don't post about it

you have a choice to not support it

by posting about it on the internet, you are actually help broadcast something that you seem to be against

you follow?

as far as selling out, I was happy they got the gig, and are now on the Tonight Show

as I look around today's hip-hop, not alot of options for a hip-hop band with members in their 40s

just out of curiosity, what would be your ideal situation for their career at this point in the game

IMO, their music has stayed true to their craft

they put out solid albums, and that's what I care about most

Do You Want More?!!!??!
Illadelph Halflife
Things Fall Apart
Phrenology
The Tipping Point
Game Theory
Rising Down
How I Got Over
Undun

looking at their discog, wich one of these albums was selling out?

they put it down for so long, it's almost like pop culture is now swinging in their direction, not the other way around.

playing walk over music monday through friday probably strengthens them musically

as far as touring

have you heard of the Roots Picnic?

it's something that I hadn't thought about, and was even anti for awhile

as in, when facebook became so popular, all these people trying to stockpile as many friends as possible, etc...

to myself, you don't have a thousand friends, FOH!

and I kept my friends list to people I actually knew and wanted to correspond with

but, in today's internet society, that is actually the new currency

how many friends/followers do you have, how many likes can you get, how fast can a video/hastag trend if posted on your website, etc...

so abstaining from being drawn into convos about things you don't like/support, is now how you delegate your power as a consumer

and something I learned here, by not getting into back and forths with trolls

you follow?

see KimYe on the cover of Vogue, Nick Cannon's white people party music, etc...

It became clear to me with what De La just did by releasing their Tommy Boy catalogue

a hip-hop group 25 years into the game was a trending topic

which sets them up for new releases

so if you hate drake, and bash him on the internet

you're actually upping his profile

dig?

Yep, and even if it weren't, they have a much longer stretch of good/great
releases than most Hip Hop artists EVER, so why the fuck would we criticize
them for falling off (I don't even think they fell off, but whatever).
They still make good music. I enjoyed the last album AND HIGO.
I've noticed that most cats around here who say negative things about The Roots
are just people who like to be contrary for the sake of being contrary... like they
feel like we can't all possibly like their stuff or that there's too much praise in
one spot for the same band, lol. I mean, this post is prime proof. The main
criticism is that they're black people with a smile on their face. OMG!

?uestlove d!ckrider.

People calling for him to be banned and this thread to not only be locked, but deleted like it never happened???

Because he talked greasy about ?uestlove?

What part of the game is that?

Unreal. Something's wrong with ya'll if you can't disagree with your favorite artists or whatever.

This thread actually shown a light more on how bad this forum really is rather than the originaly topic.

I'll NEVER understand why so many on here freely sh!t on artists like Kweli, Mos Def, Common, etc- all the artists who brought us here originally....

But the Roots are off limits. STRICTLY off limits.

Like, you know, 15 isn't going to invite you to a BBQ no matter how much you ki$$ his a$$ right??

And he's not ever going to post here like he used to and I imagine that has more to do with him being busy, etc than Phil being a meanie head to him.

Sh!t I'll take it a step further and call all of you out who just blindly support anything and everthing ?uestlove does/says/thinks as worse fans than someone like Phil.

That getalong gang sh!t isn't helping anyone and makes you look like the definition of stans.

As far as the topic, on one hand I'd point out that them being on the Tonight Show speaks to how far hip hop has come in a sense. Glad they are getting money. Don't blame them for not wanting to tour. Etc.

But as a fan of the Roots, I wish they hadn't taken the gig. I PERSONALLY don't get off on seing my favorite group as white america's favorite backup band.

Moreso even though we have gotten more ablums since then, the quality has declined with each release.

And I'm sorry, but I'm with Phil on the Bachman thing. If you decide to pull a stunt like that (which I thought was awesome) you better be ready to lose your job over it or lose your credibility.

He lost credibility. He knew the name of the song.

***A b*tch is what a b*tch does, and homeboy that was some b*tch sh!t.

If they weren't ready to stick with the statement and show bravery, shouldn't have done it. Simple as that.

So since they took the Falon gig we got-

worse albums

them playing backup band for Elvis Costello (while 15 stans worked themselves into pretzels convincing themselves and others it was good release)

and a particular action that made 15 look like a complete b!tch.

I'm not mad at them getting money, not mad at them having fun, I can see the positives for hip hop in general, but as a fan...nah I'd personally prefer it they weren't on the show and they were still cranking out ORIGINAL albums.

*** Did ya'll see that Black Thought interview recently where he actually made it sound like the last few albums are actually lined out by their manager, Dice Raw, Truck, and Greg P*rn?

Like, 15 and Black Thought aren't even involved in the early stages of the albums anymore?

Explains some sh!t but another example of as a fan, nah no thanks...

In response to Reply # 179

First of all, the concept was so poorly executed its hard to fathom. That "all the artists are voices of the same generic character" was not only a cop out, but made the album completly boring.

Its not even really a concept album when you think about it.

Fumbled concept aside, the album is just boring in general.

Literally nothing on that album they haven't done before, and better.

Used to never be able to say that about the Roots.

Nothing irritates my ass more on this board than giant rants aimed at "The Lesson" or "everyone in this thread," but when you read them the points being made seem like they were triggered by just a few specific posts, by a few specific people.

232. "what? Now the debate is message board reply order?"
In response to Reply # 206

Straight up I don't have time to chase down specific debates and get into 20 different mini conversations.

Posted my thoughts, since we are on a message board you know.

Didn't realize the order or the manner in how I responded was going to be under such scrutiny.

Of course I should have known better seeing that **some** people are calling for Phil to be banned over this.

A lot of emotion when ?uestlove is the subject.

Fair enough that generic "Lessonhead" posts aren't fair and I probably do them too often. I'll cop to that.

There is a specific type of Lessonhead though. Or maybe I should say the stereotypical Lessonhead.

The getalong gang knows who they are. Actually may they don't maybe that's the problem but I don't have time to chase each one down individually.

I'm guessing that Shokzilla or whatever below is one because he got so emotional.

What's funny is that (wait...warning I'm about to make a general statement that applies to several people please BE WARNED and DO NOT take offense)

okay

What's funny is that this thread is PROOF at how bad this forum has become.

A negative post talking greasy about 15...multi plat.

A post about Drake's sneak Jay diss...gold at the very least.

A post trying to talk about new music....wood. Over and over again.

In response to Reply # 232

On the one hand you say "Yeah I do that a little too much" but on the other hand, the entire rest of that post is more of the same. Shading into O_E territory almost. I'm just not interested in borderline-strawman arguments that start with "Everybody but me thinks or says this!!!!" Most of the actual responses in here are a lot more centered than that - so it's fair to acknowledge it.

they are being creative, artistic and fun on network TV. they're not shucking and jiving. So any black artist on TV is selling if they are a "sidekick" to a white dude? The Roots aren't up there acting like fools. They take this seriously and bring great music and great talent to TV that we haven't seen before. None of the late night bands are/were shit compared to The Roots.

This post is just dumb.

That was an insult to anyone who's listened to Organix.

The Roots should be making viral videos with Roc Marciano & Fashawn instead of the Muppets. Hip hop has never lived on Sesame Street.

I bet Malik B & Dice Raw are cringing every night from Monday through Friday.

M.A.R.S. from Clones is making better music at this point.

just because they had been grinding almost non-stop for yeeeears and releasing material that seldom ever had commercial appeal (which is why they *had* to tour so often)...

they're now 40+ yr old men that seem to have to come to the realization that they can no longer navigate through this soulless era of HipHop music making the kind of music they want so I have no problem w/their career choice at this stage of their careers.

They play their music their way...lots of creative freedom. And have steady been putting out all kinds of side projects. They look like they are having a lot more fun than the Paul Shaeffer band. If they "sold out", they did it in about the most satisfying way and still didn't alienate their fans. Happy for them.

I'm new to the forum. I was a album-for-album follower of The Roots until TFA .... Then let em slide. Just expanding my knowledge of soul and funk records , plus Madlib and Dilla really got on my radar and sent me on a tangent .... Yadda yadda

Anyways, the point is that thanks to this forum I am listening to about 10 years of Roots music all at once. As a New Listener with a background in Hip Hop and Jazz.

Y'all are jaded as fck. Undun and HIGO are Incredible records. Rising Down is probably my favorite so far. Dope dope dope. So good. I have nothing but praise for this catalog when compared to just about any group on the planet. It's not an uneven catalog at all, it's expansive and fckin epic. The last few weeks have totally changed my perspective on this band for the better simply because I wasn't paying attention to the music.

It's EASY to say they sold out but based on my listening experience I'm not hearing it ... And I wasn't expecting to be won over .
