I really like Gust of Wind and the second half of Lost Queen.
Happy is still the best song on here to me.
This is the first time in years Alicia Keys hasn't annoyed the shit outta me.

I'll give it some more spins. I might grow.

Granted, I've only listened to it once while doing some other stuff and it didn't really grab me. I was anticipating something with more hooks and ear candy but it seems like he went a different route. Gotta give it a fair listen.

In fact, kind of awful imho. Couldn't get through it. What was P going for? I thought it was going to be adult contemporary pop, but this isn't it, but it's not experimental NERD stuff either, just kind of scattered and aimless. In My Mind was better.

and I LOVE it

There is not a song on this thing I don't like. Some songs are stronger than
other's but every groove is RIGHT and CORRECT.
Man, this is a huge step up from "In My Mind". Now I understand why he was
speaking like that album never happened in a recent interview, lol... even tho
I don't think that album is terrible.
Here tho, I think Pharrell has finally given us an album full of his own personal
style and vision. Remember how Pharrell always sang hooks on Neptunes
produced tracks in falsetto but with James Brown or Michael Jackson phrasing?
You could always tell he's just naturally of that school of music. He's finally
given us himself, unapologetically... only this time, the grooves are tight, and
the production is top notch. I think this is album Pharrell has taken his career
to make. He's not catering to anyone. He's just doing what he wants to do,
and doing it very well.
Go 'head, P

Pharrell can't sing. In small doses its cool but for an entire album, no and Hunter is terrible. The vocals, the music, its just laughably bad all around IMO. Its cool if you enjoy it though.

He definitely wasn't the first cat who couldn't sing to make a successful album.
That's ridiculous to even say that he paved the way for that, lol.
And it's a good song. Cool if you don't like it tho. Dismissiveness works both ways!

>they weren't part of the hip hop community. The Love Below is

I definitely think you're giving TLB too much credit as far as people's acceptance
of singing talent. The load of singers who aren't strong vocalists are more
responsible for that than anything. This started in the 90s with people like
Joe Public... continued with people like Amerie and The Dream. If the people
who sing can sing any better than the average joe, then it's easy for a
rapper to claim to be a singer... especially when these people are being
featured on rapper's songs and vice versa.

But also, this album is neither a Hip Hop album, nor was it marketed as such... especially
considering the lead single and the features. The main people enjoying a "love affair"
with Pharrell, currently, aren't Hip Hop heads.

Also, we watched as Pharrell shared stage with Charlie Wilson and didn't
destroy the performance. In light of that, I think it's a bit unfair to put him
in the same singing territory as Dre3k. Pharrell ain't a strong vocalist, but
he isn't just some guy singing on a whim either.

I know this isn't a hip hop album but Pharrell is part of the hip hop community. Albums like this are accepted due to the success of albums like TLB. We can agree to disagree on P's singing. He's talented and I've supported dude. No need to go back and forth on something we don't agree on.

that's not true. "In Search of" came out before Love Below. Pharrell was accepted as a singer before Andre..

N*E*R*D was more of a rock project. That album didn't influence black dudes to form a band. His vocals kinda worked I that band because the vocals weren't front and center. The new solo is kinda stripped down so it's easier to notice his singing,

Odd Future. and black people seemed to dig it but that's besides the point

So you don't believe that a guy like PHARRELL WILLIAMS would have stood a chance of being accepted as singer in a different style than N.E.R"D by hiphop fans if it wasn't for The Love Below?? If he was singing before "Love Below" and he's the big superstar that he is chances are he would have done well without Andre's album coming out. Not to mention he deservedly got HITS singing. And why are we talking only about acceptance among hiphop fans if Pharrell is way bigger than hiphop.

George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Leroy bonner weren't great singers. Andre 3000 isn't the first bad singer to make a record & those i mentioned managed to make classics.. Being an amazing singer isn't a requirement in all genres. Pharrell imo can manage very well in the styles of music he does in terms of singing.
It's not like he's singing opera or rnb ballads..

Y'all keep bringing up old heads. Ask these young cats who influenced them. Y'all just don't want to give Andre his props. Like I told fam, we can agree to disagree. His singing isn't good on this album. Especially on Hunter

I really like the chorus on Marilyn Monroe.
Brand New is straight, more JT trying to sound like MJ
Hunter is terrible.
Don't care for the song with Miley
Gush is cool
Happy is great
Gust of Wind is very good
The first half of Lost Queen is okay, second half is dope
You Know Who You Are (?) is straight
and I didn't make it to It Girl my second time through.

It's better than it was my first listen, but still not as good as I think I could've been.

Pharrell had a monster year, yes... but his sound is so predictable now to me...

and while blurred lines and happy kind of stood out among the pack, and a song or two on mayer's album, so many similar songs have been misses (the daley single, that paloma faith song, aloe blacc song, kelly rowland album tracks, etc) this is an extension of that sound to me that I'm just not in love with personally... it's almost too "breezy" sounding

I gotta listen more tho, hope this grows on me

In response to Reply # 0
Thu Feb-27-14 09:44 AM by Clarence Clarke

My main problem reviewing this album is that my main critique of most of the
songs is "This is a really good song", no gimmicks, no bells and whistles....
just good music. It's like the whole album itself is a big standout.

My critique starts with "Know Who You Are".
I've listening to the album about 6 or 7 times now, and I found myself getting
excited about this song. That's because it reminds of a Neptunes produced
album that I always loved... Kelis' Kaleidoscope. It totally could have been on that album.
Very nice and breezy laid-back sound that makes the singer in me
just wanna sing along.
Really nice track.

As mentioned, "Gust Of Wind" is definitely a nice track. Daft Punk's computer
voice chorus adds a nice touch, but other than that, the slow, climbing and
descending bass line just draws you in. Something you gotta move to.

"It Girl" has a very nice instrumental breakdown toward the end. Otherwise,
it's P in cruise control, which is better than most cats at their best, so I ain't
mad at it.

"Marilyn Monroe", like most of the album, has a killer groove and bass line.
It simply makes the dancer in you want to move.
VERY nice string arrangement in this one.
Also, like with most of the album, the main thing I wanna say is "damn, this is
a good song".

"Brand New (ft. Justin Timberlake)" has a very "Jacksons" sound with Pharrell
taking the Jackie role and letting Timberlake have the Michael star role in the
vein of a "Can You Feel It" being the bridge to the chorus.

"Hunter" is basically an ode to mid/late 80's pop. I love that he goes from his
falsetto into a more talk-y/rap delivery. He's basically rapping like Blondie
on Rapture, lol. Good lil song. It's different from anything that's come out
in a while, so I think that's why people are having a hard time with it. I think
it's great tho.

"Gush"... another lovely bass line. The fact that he kept saying "light that
ass on fire" from the Neptunes song featuring Busta cracked me up for
some reason. Just cool to hear him flexing by pulling from his own very deep
catalog. Here's my opportunity to say that Pharrell kept his silliness
to a minimum on this album in a way that he didn't on "In My Mind"
with lines like "she got a ass like loaf of break, I want a slice" from
the song "Angel" or "f-u-t-u-r-e, that spells 'future', girl" from the
song "I Really Like You". The reason I mention that is the "leave ya
panties in flames" line from this song, Gush. I actually like Pharrell's
silly and quirky side, but I do understand that it can be off-putting
to some listeners, so I'm glad he found his medium.
That said, this is another one that just makes you wanna move.

"Happy". You already know! Some say it's reductive, derivative or
what have you, but one thing you can't deny is it makes you happy and makes you
want to dance. That's the aim, and it hit the mark. Fantastic contender for
song of 2013.

"Come Get It Bae"... gotdamn I love that guitar... shit's just funky as fuck.
It's not heavy funk, but it's like a funky joint for jump ropers, lol.
I just gots to get up and do my James Brown to this joint... can't help it.

Now, with all that said, it highlights for me the shame it was that Austin Brown
never got his big break. Alotta artists imitate MJ, but Austin's MJ imitation
yielded the best overall music, imo. Being MJ's nephew just made it harder
to make a name for himself while others do it constantly and never have to
be compared to MJ so adamantly.

Not to take anything from Pharrell tho... just wanted to mention Austin, lol

Great album here by Pharrell. He's definitely earned any praise he gets for this.

First album sounded too similar to Neptunes sound.
This album makes a better distinction between Pharrell solo sound and Neptunes. With this album we can see Pharrell as a funk artist when he's solo.

I like the new album, but Pharrell should have made a whole Motown throwback album similar to "Happy" his biggest hit. With his falsetto voice and those retro sounds, he would have sounded like Eddie Kendricks from The Temptations. Like Raphael Saadiq did with "Love That Girl" & "The Way I See It." Now, that would have been dope.

I had to correct the subject line.

>Would it be crazy for me to say I like In My Mind better?

No. You like what you like... this is a highly subjective matter.
However, Pharrell explained why he disconnects from that album so
much now. He says that he was operating from ego, bragging about
his money and women, and trying to be like Jay-Z and others.
He feels that that wasn't his lane and that he was meant to make
music with more purpose, so I don't think he dislikes that album for
aesthetic reasons. That Out Of My Mind joint with the Yessirs was
some really good shit.

I get excited by the idea of morphing a handful of great songs from this album with some of his production and songs for other people within the last year:

Happy
Gust of Wind
Know Who You Are
Brand New
Love is the Answer
Reach Out Richard
Wine Glass Woman
Blurred Lines
Get Lucky
(+ a few more)

If all of them could have been "Pharrell" songs on one release, I think there's a pretty amazing album there!

"Come Get It Bae" was not the best choice as a single. Either the Daft Punk collab "Gust of Wind" or the Alicia Keys duet should have been the next single.
