"Where do you rank Busta Rhymes in the all time great discussion?"

Sales?
Impact?
Longevity?
Contributions to the Craft/Art?
Stage Show?
Hits?
Classic Albums?

Busta seems to have the resume to be top 10 if not top 5 on many lists but his name tends to no come up. Explain

No classic albums. The closest being The Coming. More style over substance. He's in that 21-30 range on my personal list but 11-15 on the overall impact list. Dude had the best videos before going the thug route. Very creative and versatile flows.

He will always be remembered, made hits in multiple eras, sold records, puts on one of the best live performances....etc. I don't rank rappers in numbers, so my answer sentence is the best way to describe him imo.

He just doesn't have a classic album, because he's never tried to.

But out curiosity...that list of 125 albums from 1996...how many are classic in your mind?

I'd say 8 or 9 from my list can be considered classic

Thats about 7% of the list. I don't think that's crazy or overboard and think of how much groundbreaking hip-hop was released in that early to mid 90's time frame...

Some people have more strict guidelines for judging "classic" tho...and I get that.

I'm thinking it's somewhere in the 21-25 range for 96.

When I was thinking of MCs that could potentially be in Busta's range, not sure why I thought if Brother Ali.

I don't thing Slug is better and I'm not sure I would list Ali ahead of Busta due to Busta's longevity and status but I prefer Ali and I believe he has made a few albums better than. Busta has.

But hey, this is OKP so I guess I'm on the right site. Lol

One of the best spitters to ever touch a mic. That said even though he's a solo act he seems to be missing something that makes people ride for him. I only know one person who ever said Busta was their favorite rapper. You see what I'm saying? Even with Meth and his weak albums at some point he was someone's favorite rapper. I don't know if Busta ever had that.

I loved the first 3 albums. Got off the train after that.

(to be clear, I'm speaking on his career as an album artist. I don't live in an area with enough big name live hip-hop to have any opinion on most of the other stuff, and I haven't seen a Busta video since Pass the Courvoisier probably. I'm strictly ranking discography.)

I've always and probably forever will be intrigued by Busta, and all of his albums EVEN Year of the Dragon have at least one really dope if not fantastic track on them. But When Disaster Strikes... is the only album I can say I like unconditionally, the rest of them come with caveats. And I just recently went back through all of them a year ago this week, actually, so my opinions of them in the reviews and scores I can probably stand behind pretty solid.

1. When Disaster Strikes...: 8.17
2. The Coming: 7.49
3. Anarchy: 7.10
4. E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event): The Final World Front: 6.64
5. Genesis: 6.56
6. The Big Bang: 6.37
7. It Ain't Safe No More...: 5.00
8. I Bullshit You Not: 4.78
9. Back on My B.S.: 4.01
10. Year of the Dragon: 3.08

and like all my lists, it's very cold and numbers oriented. on a more personal list, taking full albums less into account and weighing singles, features, longevity (although longevity IS weighed on that list, pretty heavily as evidenced by Curren$y's ranking) and such Busta would crack top 50 for sure. He certainly has more releases I've cared to grade out than most artists between him and the Top 30 or so.

edit: since it's a bit unclear, every 5 albums gets a + .5 to the overall average (ie. Curren$y averages a 6.83 which'd put him down near Busta, but I've listened to and rated 22 of his releases so he gets boosted to an 8.83).

and producers are included, so 92nd isn't entirely accurate. it's purely a ranking of careers on wax/disc/digital stream.

and again, I do all this for my own entertainment/conversational mad making. I'm not saying anybody should agree with these lists but me, they're just reference points.

That's why its difficult for most of us to have a definitive spot for him in our top whatever. He doesn't talk about anything...

a summation of a majority of Busta Rhymes verses is...

"Every we step in, we do it the best/And when we doing it, you know that we gon do it to death"

There's just no substance there. Now, there's no doubt that he does this with nimble flows over excellent beats, unmatched energy, and over the top, amazing videos, but at the end of the day, the content is missing.

That's probably the reason that he tried to go the thug route for a while. To have SOMETHING to rap about.

Im almost sure that most of us have a top 10 that did more than entertain us. Their music affected us on a higher level than just making us nod our head.

Top 1o entertainer? Certainly. Top 50 rapper? ehhhh.....

The process is immaculate----->@SolidusShaz

He's probably not going to show up in most people's top 25 MC's but when it comes to great live shows, energy and maintaining a level of fun in Hip Hop Busta's one of my all time favorites. To go from the clear standout guy in LONS to someone with a 20 plus year career is pretty amazing and he's definitely one of the best at the guest MC spot to ever do it.

I personally wouldn't have him in my top 10 but I wouldn't be mad if someone did have him in their top 10. People will say that he doesn't have the content meanwhile they will have a bunch of dudes like Biggie in their top 10 when they don't really say much either. In many ways Busta is a throwback to a lot of the party, pre Rakim MC's that weren't always known for being super lyrical but we're greatly entertaining like Doug E Fresh and Busy Bee.
