That's why I'm here. Without this place I probably wouldn't bother much with the net, especially in what the net has become.

The wealth of knowledge within The Lesson is literally unmatched across the net. There aren't many music topics which have not been discussed if not fully explored in depth here, and there are few niches in music which The Lesson could not cover to some level of depth.

It's a place that has had to grow with the internet which of course means change. Change around these parts usually involves the influx of new posters with new perspectives. During these periods folk like to cry 'the end of The Lesson' due to the swarms of new posters. But through these waves what you'll see is only a few last, and the ones that do are usually groomed into the culture of this place. They then become a part of The Lesson spectrum offering Lesson level critique of another sound.

The influx of late has been dwindling, which has slowed the traffic a bit but because of it you'll still see the quality is there. The stuff that's getting discussed is being discussed well and usually in that Lesson way that's unlike anywhere else online.

Now about them sammiches...

I grew up visiting the Lesson, and I consider it my primary musical education, even though I went to music school and shit. It's got a lot of sentimental value to me, and I still enjoy coming on it, even though it's slowed down considerably.

I'm not mad in general that it's slowed down a bit overall, as well as in my niches. I love it, but it's been good for me to spend less time here.

Were you slacking off at work or something? It's never seemed like you spent an inordinate amount of time here...I'm kinda laughing over here...thinking that the lesson was like one of those 'world of warcraft' things where you were online for 20 straight hours and lost your job/family. Just kidding....but what do you mean by that? I've found that it can be more interesting to check in here less often so that some of the exchanges can build up more. Is that what you mean?

In response to Reply # 101

the boards were more active. There were only 9 pages of posts, and if you left work on a Friday and didn't check in over the wkd, chances were it would be gone. So you had to get the conversation in when it was available. As a result, when a good conversation was ongoing, it could definitely become preoccupying. I also felt the need to check in more often. So I definitely had a tendency to spend more time participating.

While that momentum carried for a few years afterward, the change to a practically infinite number of pages cut the urgency by a lot. It's fun to up old posts once in a while, but I'm pretty sure that change hurt the boards in quite a few ways.

But yes, I did spend (I won't say 'waste') a lot of work time on The Lesson. It's good for me to spend less time here and work harder at both work and home. If something in my niches come up though, I'll still throw everything I've got at it.

Take their myopic cantankerous redundant ideas elswhere

And this place would be even better/greater

I like this place a lot and love the dialogues I've had with some posters.

I wish the few of us who listen to the new rap artist (music in general) would go more in depth like we do with some of the older records/albums, but overall folks still post about quality music

I also love some of the fueds. The back and forths between old "rivals"... those shits have me dyin' of laughter: like O_E vs mrshow, mrshow vs spidey, AFKAP vs Warren, AFKAP vs O_E, murph vs maxxx (even tho recently I wish we'd all just ignore uknowwho) etc

But this place full of what seems like cool dudes with good taste and knowledge

Real talk I remarked to myself that that 2013 soul music post was a god send, and I don't know anywhere else on the web that had a rolling list of good soul music throughout the year, which says alot about The Lesson and the Web at the same time.

the twitters and facebooks caused the lesson to fade. there used to be more action when there was more prospective artists coming thru getting a little practice, conversation, building, getting a little better, and gaining a little recognition and small scare notoriety in here.

then all that sht stopped. and then twitter became the ultimate De-centrlalizer and De-unifer.

the lesson is still a place , the only place outside of Hiphopdx , that i come to on the Daily to check in and see what's going on (with a shout out to The Breakfast Club interviews, and Sway in the Morning Show interviews).

if we could reinvigorate this bitch somehow. there is still some real talent coming thru here. and there are still some good new music related posts that go down.

but i wish the L had the flair that it had back in 2004/2005.

Upgrade:

DCForum was cool circa 2004, but it's 2014 and you would have far more traffic therefore can charge more money for advertising by migrating The Lesson to a cleaner platform with a robust CMS that's social media friendly. Enable html and images and social media tools so we can share like or dislike topics on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Clean up the clutter and CONSOLIDATE:

Merge Freestyle, Make The Music and OkayArtists into The Lesson. The boards looks like a vapid wasteland. By fusing these components you will actually save The Lesson and become more attractive to new viewers, especially now that your band is moving to a cushy time slot on NBC.

Destroy and Rebuild:

Kill Okayhustle dead. Like seriously murder that useless bitch! It's a total waste of internet space.

Instead rebrand it as OkayBizness. Allow members to promote their labels, music merchandise, services, products, etc. As well discuss issues, seek advice or ideas etc.

Rebrand and privatize GD:

Take ownership and rename it #thatsite and charge a lifetime fee of $15.00. When you make that particular private you will actually increase the value of the boards altogether. Allow them to post porn videos from RedTube, Porn Rabbit, Porn Hub, Etc. Worldstarr hip hop videos or whatever they want.

Fire whoever is running this site into the ground and hire me to turn it around and I will do something they've never been able to do and that's make Okayplayer.com a continuous profit.

I hate the idea of this board changing to a format that looks like reddit. This layout is far superior in my opinion.

Also hate the idea of allowing html, photos (other than jade typhoon which you can turn on and off) and allowing porn.

The clean simple layout of these forums allow the focus to be on words, not all that extra stuff.

You know why Twitter, Tumbler & Facebook is so successful? Because they allow their users to host images and video. Those images and videos increase traffic and keep people glued.

Posters here can not be trusted not to really post disgusting shit.

But I do agree that upgrading the board software would be a good idea.

I think DC forum is excellent, but a properly curated XenForo installation would be almost as good. The forums at Steve Hoffman's site are a good example of it (buy they do allow HTML and Images): http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/

Keep Facebook away, but I like the idea of Twitter.

This would be very bad. Free is better - and porn should not be here. (Believe me, there are PLENTY of places for porn on the net - we don't need it here.)

You sure you want to kill OkayHustle??

My suggestions would be
1)Add block lists. (So I never have to see certain posters ever again.)
2)Add a wherein a person can post but it is hidden from everyone except themselves.
3)Add thread subscriptions
4)Keep in minimal. The text is why we're here, not the theme of the software.
5)Give more people moderator rights (not me)

If embedded images come to this forum it's going to require 10 to 20 times the amount of moderator actions that we presently have. Not just porn, but there's going to images of murder - and if PM's allow embedding then there's going to be a glut of dick pics.

I'd like Okayplayer to remain off the blocked sites lists at work - embedding images here will almost certainly have it blocked within a week.

As for embedding Youtube links and/or Soundcloud stuff - that could really open Okayplayer up as a target for legal trouble from pissed off artists. A simple HTML link that opens in another site removes a lot of that.

This board could remain about text and information. We have Xvideos.com for porn, Reddit for useless meme images, and Youtube watching copyrighted material.

after time & neglect rendered it a borderline wreck, while still occasionally running across an old memento or friend who when I come by to check helps me to remember what I love(d) about it.

That being said, I'm still very much glad it exists and remain convinced that I will in due time be an active part in its glorious rebuild.

But right today?

For some time now I instead make my home a couple blocks over in Sports and somehow even the hood in GD that I used to tiptoe past back in the early days now looks safer, more inviting.

Or maybe it's just feeling like every conversation I now have here is one I've already had a bunch of times (due to the less fluid nature of art appreciation compared to sports or current events).

Then again maybe it's a case of 'I'm getting too old for this shit' like Danny Glover but I doubt that.

Because while actually turning 38 years young today, I'm still far more libel to be 'old man at the club' than 'bored old married guy with kids' while somehow futilely attempting to sidestep both.

*raises birfday-champagne-if-you-thirstay glass in this post to the internet daddy who more than a decade ago brought me into this world*

No matter what happens from here, qoolquest, for this humble roof you put over our heads I'll always feel blessed.

Many Thanks,

-Bomb

I once mentioned the silly trolling that goes on and nearly got my head chewed off, but that's still my only beef. I know it's fun to some people but at times it can be disturbing lol

Other than that, The Lesson is great. I've seen people make algorithms and voting systems, people reply with full fledged essays, and there's always talk of some artists I've never heard of.

I just like the way the board comes together when a great album/mixtape drops.

Lots of smart and witty people here.

the new style(s) as I and some of the other younger posters are, and I feel like that generation gap has created a weird sort of divide over the past three years I've gone from every-few-months lurker to active poster.

In response to Reply # 0

Many of the older posters who set the tone of the boards have stopped posting alternatively only post very rarely. At the same time, their shoes have not been filled with new posters and that's the biggest problem right there. You *need* new blood, not only to replace the old posters that drop off but also to provide new insight, ideas, viewpoints, taste etc.-you can't expect the same old guys to maintain the same energy towards the same subject.

The influx of newer posters who actually stick around and make a valid contribution has been sad in the past couple of years and it's easy to see due to the slow speed of the boards nowadays. I live in sweden which is about 6 hours "ahead" of the US which meant that the lesson was most active while I was sleeping; I used to wake up and hot posts from yesterday were suddenly on page 3. Now, shit is SLOOOW by comparison.

I won't mention any names but there's only been a few newer posters that really stuck out to me and most of the posters I *still* think of when I think of the lesson were already here when I started to post regularly which is pretty fucking sad because that was nine (9!) years ago...

Otherwise, I like the Lesson but I can't imagine wanting to post here if I discovered it today rather than when I did; the energy and interesting topics just aren't there to the same extent. A board is only as good as its posters and right now, the posters on the lesson-new and old-just aren't very inspired (and no, I'm no exception obviously)

I've discovered so much great music and learned a lot of things thanks to the heads and the artists in the Lesson.

It may be slower than it was ten years ago, but I still feel compelled to visit daily.

everything i post is a variation on shit i've said before.
my writing here is boring to me, so it can't be exciting to other ppl.

and all the other decent/ great writers seem bored too...
so there's nothing to feed off of.

so i still lurk,
but i lurk a lot less than i used to.
ain't nobody talking about nothing.

listing things, insulting people,
but it's nothing that leads to discussion.

again, i'm part of that problem.
i've run out of shit to say too.

but yeah. it's dead.

As many others have echoed in this post, it's still the most vital spot on the 'net that I know of to find out what's going on in music. This place absolutely changed my life. I just wonder what can be done to revitalize it in the age of social media without compromising what was so great about it in the first place.

I would be interested to know, though, mr. 15...is your diminished presence 'round these parts a natural evolution (not your only outlet what with Twitter/fb/IG/etc. being around)? Or was there more of a defining catalyst that made you decide to step back a bit? And if so, was that catalyst a negative one, or just the fact that you're way busier these days (no spite there, you've earned it a million times over)?

What do YOU think of the Lesson?

I used to be in here HEAVY. Here and GD back when I first joined. A lot has changed since then

- The Lesson is SLOW these days. And very few topics get more than 30 replies.

- There's a lot more music that I'm uninterested in these days so I'm definitely not replying as much.

- The lack of actual music discussion is....sad. Like we used to actually DISCUSS more here.

- At the end of the day though, the Lesson has had some GEMS (Yacht Rock post anyone....or that samples post) and I'm always coming here after I hear new music to see how late I am (ie the Thievery Corp post yesterday)

I like it. I'm 46 (!) and still read the info about new artists and debates about old(er) ones.

The only bummer is the posters getting all personal during their music arguments, like calling someone a bitch if they don't like Pusha T or whatever….it's not that serious.

he filled a niche for discussing alt-90's music from IDM artists like Plaid and Plone to experimentally singer/songwriters like Bjork and Ringo Sheena to angsty rock stuff like Nine Inch Nails and Tool, to a ton of other random 90's-00's indie/electronic stuff, knowing their entire bodies of work and b-sides and everything, and seemed to use all that as a reference for discussing current music

most any other music niches i like though, there are definitely some great posters here to discuss other stuff with (beat tapes, soul/funk, indie rap, folk), but the lesson isn't as good without him

this is way too melodramatic, but i did like posting here
but it seems like there's nobody to feed off of anymore.

i've discussed years of pent up analysis and
now that i made all of those posts, it's come to this.

talking about posters (that don't even post anymore). lol

to be honest I'm much more inclined to share my real thoughts on music, entertainment, politics or life philosophies with y'all than a bunch of people I was born into and might have to see in real life whose sensibilities don't mesh with mine and I wouldn't want to offend or engage for fear of losing some level of respect for them.

I'll keep the real shit for my true friends and for a forum like OKP which I've pretty much grown up on.

I figured as a parent you might be on it to track your kids & their friends too but then again y'all do home school if I recall correctly so you might not feel the need.

But yeah, FOH, Facebook.

I started doing Twitter four days ago because I have some stuff I'm working on that I'm gonna wanna do some networking and promotion on but I have enjoyed that more in four days then the ten years I've been on Facebook.

My status updates on that site are once-a-year to thank everyone for wishing me Happy Birthday (which 90% of them only know because Facebook told them so).

Part of the reason why I'll never complain about the D'Angelo album delays (or any other artist for that matter) is that people make such a big fuss about getting the music, and when then finally have it they listen to it instantly in a rush to be "FIRST!" to comment on it. Then we get a platinum post fueled by judgments based on one to three listens, then after a few days or a week the post fizzles, and it's on to the next album/event. Those posts are never revisted unless someone hears the album months later and ups it to offer their opinion. Then it drops again and maybe gets archived.

Remember how for YEARS people were begging and pleading and praying for a Phonte solo album? There was Lauryn Hill levels of clamoring around these parts for such a project. Now here's the archived post for that album: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=17&topic_id=162982&mesg_id=162982&listing_type=search. With 304 replies one would assume that there was a lot of in-depth discussion about the album in that post, right? Well nearly half of those replies came before the album was even released. And there are a couple of side-bar strings about Nicolay not producing for rappers anymore, what Phonte signed on pre-order copies, and a U-God alias post that got a bunch of LOLs.

That is a pretty good microcosm of what the Lesson is at this point, as far as album discussion goes. That's the biggest disappointment for me. Otherwise, I'm generally ok with the forum. It helps me pass the day. It definitely doesn't move a fast as it once did. But I would attribute that to the fact that the majority of the posters just aren't as excited about new music as we once were. Which ultimately is a result of the "greying" of OKP. That said, PLEASE don't pull the plug Big Brother ?uesto!!

agreed. its the way of the world. we get so much new music so fast that we don't even have time to appreciate it before we move on to the next project. usually we have heard almost half of a project before its officially released. that's one of the cons to the advancement of technology.

I agree wholeheartedly.

That said, I appreciate the (few) folks who still attempt to have earnest discussion, have positive things to say about music, and want to share new music.

If you wanna have analytical discussion about the music, you have to set it off.

That's what I don't understand about some of the cats around here...

When I wanna talk about a specific thing in a post, I'll reply with that idea.

The Lesson is made up of us, the members. If you sit back and observe what

That's what I did with KA's Grief Pedigree. As for the Phonte album, I personally wasn't one of those folks who were begging for that solo. I prefer him rapping within the dynamics of a group. But I get what you're saying. We have to force/cultivate the dialogue for it to happen. Again, I think a lot of it has to do with our level of excitement (or lack thereof) regarding contemporary albums. I know that plays a factor for me personally. But I agree with your "be the change..." line of thinking for the most part.

47. "RE: How does The Lesson feel about The Lesson?"
In response to Reply # 0

Like many have said, still one of the best spots for music discussion on the net.

Unfortunately, the discussion board format is something that's fallen by the wayside on the internet, meaning there's less new blood coming in (at least it feels that way), and many of the older folks show up less and less (myself included). At times it feels less eclectic than it once was. Other times, though, I'm surprised when someone mentions x/y/z and I wonder if that supposedly lost eclecticism is more perception, too.

I wish I posted more these days, but I love the fact that I still have a handful of folks here whose posts I check for... I've looked around, and I really don't see the same sort of community replicated anywhere else...

There are some cool album discussions, debates, and flat out arguments.

It's pretty much the only place where you can go where people have an
appreciation for old AND new black music from Marvin Gaye to Migos...
Louis Armstrong to Miguel.

Not only that, we discuss different genres. Mufuckas even had a country
discussion not too long ago.

We find out about new shit from each other all the time.

It's great to have a community where you can just show up and be put on to
something new without having to stumble upon it on a search.

Whenever I come across something new, this is the first place I share it.

All things considered, the place the damn great.

And any complaining actually came here to do it, so that says a lot.

i come here mostly for info on new music. or rescovering old stuff i missed.

i also find it exciting when there's a noteworthy LP that drops and it gets 100+ replies. my friends/family/wife don't really get why i get so excited over new music like that, and it feels like i'm sharing that excitement with others on this board.

There are still good posts, and I still find new music, which is important.

But I think the discourse, where you could actively debate so and so's discography vs so and so's or really study trends boils down to....

BLAH BLAH BLAH illumaniti money makes them popular.

It's also disheartening to see a music forum so happy with predicting failure as if artists are sports teams to root and jeer for.

like, advanced lessons vs. introductory.

b/c the kids still should discuss stuff we discussed when we were kids. the fact that WE are over those discussions doesn't mean those coming shouldn't engage. at the same time, it'd be nice if those who have more knowledge didn't have to deal w/posts looking for intros to like Prince's discography or Stevie's... nothing wrong w/coming here for intros to those acts but many of us are beyond that talk now.

i'm repeating myself. hope i was clear.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 0

Less traffic = less posts, less discussions.

Posts hang around longer when there are less replies. Makes The Lesson seem like a ghost town at times.

Demographics might be an issue too. Some people are caught in a time warp, which makes discussing new music/artists problematic. I attribute that to age.

Other than that it's cool.

But it's true, in the last year or two, it's slowed down considerably. I think a makeover would in theory give things a boost, but I'm worried that too much change might scare off some of the old-timers because change is scary.

I think definitely the boards need to be consolidated and kill off the dead weight, like okayhustle, make the music, etc. All we need is the Lesson, GD, Sports and PTP. Maybe one more for business or something.

I think the lesson is mostly missing 15. He used to generate a lot of traffic by posting. I still don't "get" Twitter. I can see it's value but I can't see how it could replace this place. Twitter the place for "no-depth" music discussion?

BTW, please don't kill the Lesson, it would be a shame to not have it around anymore.

I don't visit daily like I used to, but I love this forum. It's like I literally witnessed people grow from being a member of this forum. Seeing Little Brother from the humble beginnings, the birth of Foreign Exchange, as well as Tanya Morgan. Countless discussions on music, differing opinions, insight from artists, etc. I will always have love for the lesson.

100. "It's my homepage to the internet."
In response to Reply # 0

When I go to work...I'll logon to the computer after fax check and check emails, then open a OKP page. Probly around 30% of my down-time (of which there's plenty in television) is spent reading OKP. Even on weekends....if its a Friday night and my daughter/girlfriend fall asleep then I'll usually check in on here. So I'd genuinely miss it if it went away. If I hear a new act than 9 times out of 10, I'll search em out on the lesson to give me a context for their thing and what they're about. Also hear a lot of new acts here...can stay relatively well-informed about new things happening while working/raising kids. When people are really passionate about music....sometimes when they start families it becomes tuff to keep that hobby up. So the lesson kinda fills that role for me. I can still do the geek-out on music thing but I don't have to leave my GF home alone with the kids in order to do it. So I'm saying it probably fills a void in my life. When I was a teenager, me and my friends basically lived music. That's all we did. So it's nice to have an avenue to keep that up in my life

The lesson was my first introduction to social networking. I was kinda late to the internet. This place was my first forray into the 'chatroom' phenomena. I've looked around for other places...this is still the only one that I partake in with a login ID. I sometimes lurk in Gearslutz and RealGM (the raptors board is nuts).

I started posting in GD about a year ago and I like that too. I was posting really personal stuff in there until my girlfriend noticed me checking in on OKP here and there. Now she's lurking here so I can't post about personal stuff anymore. She's already read all the stuff I posted about her....wasn't expecting that. ahahaha

About the quality of posting.....I think it's just part of being in a community. Not everything's gonna appeal to you and sometimes you'd like a certain topic to have more activity. I'm perfectly happy just focusing of the pockets that appeal to me. There's usually always a few laughs here and there even if the musical aspect of the exchange doesn't appeal to me.

To much blah blah blah but I'm gonna send this post anyways. I'm grateful for this place.

on the net..

The music discussion..although changed from it's original intent and content as far as the type of artist it champions..it's still some of the best in-depth music discussion around.

Yes Twitter is faster, more accessible for the little witty comments on whatever song is buzzin that day...but The Lesson is still a place where you can find a person still passionate enough to and give a damn about music to engage and have a discussion or debate with.

I will agree today's Lesson boards aren't the same as the Lesson of yesterday (meaning '99-'03) but it's still a place I come to everyday (multiple times each day) while in the matrix; unlike those who abandoned it and basically felt it was just something to go to while in high school, college, or unemployed.

Clearly I'm more lurker than poster, but there's nowhere and nothing remotely like what I find here. I miss the old Lesson, sure, but it remains vital and sometimes brilliant.

OKP is a frame of reference for some very major parts of my life, and I've been lucky enough to experience some small part of the camaraderie here.

Never used to post here much but I've been lurking since about 03-04. These last couple of years really slowed down and I found I haven't been coming here as much but the discussions that have been had here just can't be found anywhere else on the net. I've been put on to soooo many great artists/albums from here (DOOM and Blu to give examples). And some classic fucking posts that I'll probably remember for the rest of my life (freestyle battle at the Cheesecake Factory anyone?)

Although it's become kind of a shell of what it used to be, this place is really irreplaceable and provides an avenue for me to read about/talk about music with like-minded people.

and theres not as much enthusiasm as before. theres no 'have you heard THIS?' for the most part. all feels a bit fatigued. maybe people are just bored, i dont know but theres not much energy. would be nice to be able to come here and get up on more diff music but i dont seem to see it. there's also just not enough people here maybe - id like to get more diff perspectives here but it all seems a bit complacent here. i think okp also has a funny rep now, as not quite backpack, but kinda stuck in that neo soul/soulquarians kind of era. its weird, okp has all these diff sub sites, like okayafrica or okayfuture, etc, but why dont i see that reflected in the posts on the lesson?! thats what id like to see (if only cos thats what im interested in really). maybe twitter and facebook killed the in depth discussion too. it would be great to have more posts on old music rather than just another post about prince or stevie being GOATS, even if it is just nina simone or billie holiday, but the lesson seems welded to the same legends.

There used to be a real live creative energy here with people in one place discussing, sharing, peeping, collabing, critiquing, and studying music. You could learn more about Coltrane, celebrate Prince, understand new things about Stevie Wonders recording process, have your own beats critiqued, gain tips, learn what moves people, discover new artists, make connections, build skills, and become better versed all in one interwoven interaction.

You had people who were just music lovers and people who were music makers (pros, hobbyists, novices, etc) all in one place, drawn by the glow of possibilities and an actual "scene" of sorts. This gave everyone a chance to really engage and build in an exciting way.

Once some ppl got bent out of shape over maybe a few too many "peep my beat" threads for their taste, the overreaction was stifling, Soviet, and it snuffed the life out.

If you want real vibrance and vitality in any community, you have to accept some level of messiness and annoyance.

You cant partition these things, block them off, obsess over neatness and expect life to thrive

But yes. The passing of Jay (and the exodus to MTM) was epochal in a lot of ways.

As a lurker, I see the Lesson as made up of (1) people who will eventually post what I would post, thereby expressing my unspoken sentiment; (2) people who will post things that elevate the discourse, the shit that draws me in over my head; and (3) trolls, who could conceivably draw anyone in over their head. That exodus left the Lesson skewed increasingly towards 1 and 3, and 2 are the ones that push things forward.

Some of the greatest moments in The Lesson have been against "the rules", say posting beats or the Big Blak Afrika alias (no c's because that's a weak European consonant--with no sound of its own, it samples "s" and "k"--the Puff Daddy of the alphabet). That would all go down on Twitter now, I guess, but we had a moment there, and it can't quite come back.

and gave way to a new kind of vibe and crowd here that many people have noticed, and is still cool, but missing that magic

All they'd have to do is once again put the music makers and music lovers (or music-making and music-loving, as its not always different ppl but different hats) in the same circle, and all kinds of shit would pop off again, because the general standards and quality of posters is still pretty darn good at the end of the day...just stuck in a very long Lazy Afternoon

Ish fell off when people started using mobile devices / tablets for leisure-time browsing. Get a system that incorporates Tapatalk and get some new/hip voices in here and things will liven up. Can't say that it will get much steam without some underhanded press maneuvering though, like some "?uesto says OKP is DEAD" on DX or something.

It's the only "discussion" board I still frequent.

In my heyday here from 2000 to about 2006 I frequented many boards, but this is the one I constantly came back too. Not only was this board the most critical, but most often the most informed. Discussions with other members here were a definite catalyst for many interviews and discussions I had with artists back in ThaFormula days.

The only reason I would say that I am not here as much anymore is that I just don't care for many of the artists being discussed here anymore.

I'm probably one of the "90's heads" that people say this board is too full of, but I do still buy and listen to new artists, its just fewer discussions that I find myself relating too. Sucks to get old! haha

I've been visiting and mostly lurking since 2000.

I still think The Lesson still offers intelligent music discussion and a great deal of knowledge on a variety of genres of music.

But to me, the hook of The Lesson has been the personalities and deep knowledge of the posters.

Like Joe Corn Mo said, one of the personally disappointing turns of the board has been the atrophy of the old guard and the lack of new, fresh, and young perspectives from new posters.

I used to enjoy viewing the boards and the diversity of opinions and outlooks on music, even if I didn't always agree with the opinions or the style of posting. I liked learning the different logic of posters I respected.

Another change has been the lack of eclecticism of the music discussed. While the lack of variety of musical genres discussed could be from a general decline of enthusiasm in music, it's rare to see posts that aren't either rehashes of golden age hip hop appreciation or laments about new music. Sometimes there are posts about EDM or vintage R&B, but posts like ASAP and Warren Coolidge going back and forth about James Brown's unconfirmed Cuban musical influences are highlights that appear less often as I would like.

I also think The Lesson takes itself a little too seriously. As much as we all think we are guardians and gatekeepers for musical culture, sometimes it would be good to poke fun at ourselves. Scorpion's Friday Fun posts were good for a chuckle or at least remind us that our good taste isn't always good.

Discovered tons about music here in the lesson. Few friends are really interested in music, let alone the wide range that can be brought up here so that's been valuable. A gateway drug.

Realize my post count for as long as I've been here probably has me in lurker territory but I am a consistent lurker, ha ha.

I really have no idea what could replace the forums here. The few times I've ventured on others they've either been overwhelming or too ignorant.

Hard to imagine hearing about Lewis Taylor or Killer Mike from anyplace else. And that would be just be sad.

...i think i agree with the folks who discussed mtm and how it changed the dynamic of this forum.

i don't know if i'm in the minority on this, but i miss some of the silly arguments that used to happen more frequently just for the sake of entertainment. it's why i stop in at sports before i come here. part of that is the nature of music has changed. the early aughts provided for some sports-esque allegiances, even if they were dumb. i don't mind the dumb s*** every now and then. i don't know if the landscape allows for that now.

still, i feel very positive about the lesson. best of luck in the new time slot, btw.
