Crazy. No marketing, no rumors, no early leaks, no mention of it aside from the single earlier in the year. And it's a video to go with each song.

Did kanye start this trend? Isnt this similar to what kanye and jay did?

Im asking because i didnt buy either album, but i do remember the no marketing thing with kanye. Im just wondering if beyonce brought something new to the table, and if she'll get credit for a new way of releasing music or if this is just a twist to how kanye did it.

he did almost every one of the new songs as video
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIStory_on_Film,_Volume_II

of course this is like 95-97
but she definitely cut out the middleman
hopefully there's no mass layoff following this trend

something like this with literally no marketing. Jay had that Samsung commercial out weeks before the album came out where he said he'd just drop the album when noone expected it, with no sense of irony in that he's saying it in a commercial cross promoting the album...

been hundreds of people that knew about this. Releasing it just on iTunes would keep it from being sent to print ahead of time which would just about prevent the album itself leaking, but how was the fact that there was an album dropping at all be kept secret, especially with all the people involved with the video shoots, recording, etc.

I guess since it's all digital then everyone involved would be within her camp (or at least getting paid by her camp) so maybe they all signed contracts to keep it under wraps. However it was done, it's pretty impressive.

She's been recording for over a year... There were some false starts but it was no secret she was recording and shooting videos...

So even though mad people knew only 2-3 people (beyonce, rob stringer .. whoever would upload it) would need to know if and when it dropped..

To be honest niggas threw a false flag out THIS week..

"At some point, Beyoncé will put a record out, and when she does, it will be monumental." - Rob Stringer

it's funny that you say "ladies and gaydies" because as much as I love Beyonce, I'm obviously not going to be able to relate to her songs the same way a female would. For us guys, you just have to enjoy the music quietly. You can't sing along, can't play it in the car with your boys. You can't go to the concert (unless you go by yourself, or with your girlfriend). That is of course unless you're... Since she's got the videos out, the only thing that is acceptable is watching the videos. But overall, ever since seeing the "No No No" Remix video, I've been a Beyonce fan.

this album is garbage though IMO and she ain't singing and she sounds contrived and its really predictable and the reason to put this mess on I tunes is because there are no tunes on the album.

She is One of the ten Most Overrated Artists Ever IMO. and lets be real she is 4 solo albums now 5 in her solo career and this will come to record stores and not to mention the Destiny Child's success, Jewelry, stats, etc. and while she has her base, she ain't made that statement record yet. this ain't a biggie because nothing on here sounds remotely memorable IMO, catchy and cool on a club run however it don't stand out

straight up I think she is talented, charismatic and has personality, however her material has left me cold. to me musically she hasn't had them songs. her voice is tight and yet she often over sings or tries too hard.

IMO she never has made any albums better than Mary J Bliege back in the day. I'll take My Life over all of Beyonce's catelog combined. sorry but Mary moved me far more.

even Layurn Hill moved me more off one joint

Beyonce was in there twearking to BP and Jigga was like Yo,B drop that album because he is getting number 1 and you can't be dancing this stuff.

i'm not the only R.kelly fan who feels this, due to the history of the two. and lets not act like Jay still doesn't throw a shot at R whenever he gets a chance to?

U know whats hilarious? This Beyonce chick sold 80,000 copies of this album in just 3 hours....

Record sales have always been your ammo right? This chick is killing shit...

Meanwhile our boy Kelly is projected to move just 100,000 in a week....He made Black Panties to get that young ratchet crowd...Didn't quite work out...So now that he still Relic status (your thinking, not mines) he has to tap that concert market...

Kelly still has that talent though...Just need. to get a live band and stage show worthy of his talents...

We will see....

because as a matter of fact on the track "Shut Up" he states and I quote my stats speak for themselves. Kellz has always talked about his own stats. before you act like its just me, the man talked about hits and stats on his material. he said it on the extended version of "Happy People" where he said not just songs but hit songs from the chocolate factory. as competitive as he is and how he likes to battle the man himself talks about his stats and place in music, not just i, so before you go throwing it on me, you need to listen to the man himself. his own quotes through the years.

true and real R.Kelly fans know he never is one to shy away from his place in music and his success.

I don't have to listen to Kells' words...lol

I just look at history...Sooner or later ALL artists face a drop off in popularity (in various level of degrees) and record sales...

This is why it makes sense not to be silly and short-sighted enough to proclaim record sales and hits to be the end all to be all..

This ^^^^ has been part of YOUR argument...That whole RELIC bullshit u used to hit people over the head with....Now that it's hitting Kells, you tap dancing....

If u r a fan of music you leave the record sales and hits to the suits and the artists...If they want to rule the world and sale a shit load of albums, that's the the way of the music business, Nothing wrong with that....If they want to just showcase their art and let the chips fall, that's the artists' prerogative as well...

I told u that shit was going to come back and bite u in the ass...We all know that the record label, just from Kells' interesting duets with Gaga, Phoenix and Bieber, expected to have bigger first week sales...Certainly more than 100 K the first week....

But as I will continue to say...AS LONG AS YOU LIKE THE ARTIST AND THE ALBUM, HITS AND RECORD SALES SHOULD BE SECONDARY....It's aall about what YOU get out of the experience....

Kells now has the logical opportunity to do what all acts of his stature have done......Become a strong live act...

I for one am very intrigued by Kells' next move....

the man himself on his records, interviews etc.. has talked about stats, and awards and his success. you don't listen and that makes you a Incomplete journalist on the subject. the man himself talked about it.

you don't just brush it off because its there on record.

and he is one of the 5 best selling Black Artists Ever in the R&B World period.

anyway BP ain't a Great album its good and it flows nicely, however we differ if he made a Better album it would sell period.

because while i like joints off the album, it ain't an all the way thing.

his biggest obstacle is that he ain't had a money track in a good while.

trapped in the closet overrode everything for a while and it burried some of his later albums.

i still believe with the right material he can go multi platinum easily and i will always say that.

however regardless of sales and hits, he is the kang of Music today and the best artist in the World. he is the Lebron James of Music.

and he is the last Great R&B artist and he also got the Baton from Michael Jackson Nuff said. he been a strong live act we talking a cat two decades deep in his career and he has accomplished what so few have period with his colabs and solo career.

you be lying if you say you don't want a favorite artist of yours not to get rewarded and acclaim. because you always want to see and hear your favorite artist getting them sales and acknowledgement.

and to me Kellz is that kind of artist who has standards as songs and albums, tours and culture impact period.

at the end of day i support the brother as always period. you know i don't care because he is the best Artist we got left.

Every superstar act talks about that...From Springsteen to Prince to Madonna to Beyonce to Kells....They all say that when you got the hardware, acclaim and platinum plaques, record sales at this point in their career is secondary...In fact Kells said this very same thing to me...He made a point to say this several times to me...

It's the reason why I dismissed your very point...Because it's moot to this convo....My post was about YOU tap dancing...Not Kells and record sales...

>you don't just brush it off because its there on record.

When he has said the same thing to me, it doesn't matter within the context of this convo...Again, I'm talking about YOU and your plea copping, which is silly at this point....

Correct...So that should be reason enough to not make a big deal off of record sales when an artist has done so much in his career...Right?

I don't care that Kells sold only 100 K...To me, it's the natural progression of things....

His comments about his legacy and not having anything to prove has been said by every BIG TIME act at some point in their career...

Really, you are spinning your wheels on this one that it's more embarrassing than anything else...

What Kell's dwindling record sales should teach u is it hits EVERYBODY sooner or later....And it's been that way for the last three albums for Kells, which again, should not be a big deal...At all...

This is what you should take away from this exchange:

R KELLY, JUST LIKE ELVIS, JAMES BROWN, ARETHA FRANKLIN, PRINCE, MJ, SLY STONE, THE ROLLING STONES, RADIOHEAD, LIONEL RICHIE and any other act u want to throw in have all seen their record sales go down...

My post is not about Kells' record sales...It's about you being very outlandishly hypocritical as usual...lol

When you call other legendary acts on this board RELICS because of dwindling record sales or lack of chart hits, that's the issue...

That's how you end up looking like a blatant homer who is not at all serious about discussing music....

This is that evergreen period for Kells...He should be able to tour his ass off, make some bank, and become a better live act (which he def. has the tools to do so...) by getting better musicians around him...Kells will be OK...

As for u? Grow up....U should like Kells' music on its own merits...Not whether or not he's still popular...

That's all to it....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

you garbage piece of trash you need to grow up and stop putting your takes down folks throat. stick to being a journalist and stop trying to push your garbage wack agenda here.

and you are so dumb it ain't even funny.

the dude wouldn't be on no Major Label on every tv show when he is a known recluse out here pushing this project period.

you are a fraud and a jive hack turkey and a no nothing.

record company ain't spent all that loot on him they expect a return.

your lame behind needs to grow up and every act is different.

Michael Jackson stopped his own career basically because he hated that industry. the man still sold regardless.

Prince ain't put out a quality album in many a moon and he been on that tour game for 20 years as a oldies but goodies act.

any act that been to the top wants to always battle.

R.kelly on the view, Arsenio, all these radio stops, etc..

is for his health? you are so dumb and wack it ain't even funny.

he needs a statement song again period.

got a good album however not a Great album and his image still takes a hit more than anything else because in truth he should be more embraced however his personal life has done alot of damage.

i know for a fact that Kellz stopped caring after the happy people album because that was the last time he was pushing his new stuff hard and then after that it was all about trapped in the closet.

love letter went gold and you set up in here and lied about things.

truth is love letter and write me back were meant as a double set and again the label held it back.

i'm down with Kellz regardless musically and i still feel that he can do better and still have that project.

i could care less what your wack generic jive self says,

you a fraud Fake

Bully for u...In fact, I support your right to support Kells with the passion that are showing...I think it's cool in this day and age that we still fight for our favorite artists after all these years...

Now can u do everyone on this board a favor?

Can you allow others to do the same?

>i don't get in nobody's way. whom am i stopping?

lol!!!!!

This shit is remarkable....That's been part of your whole shit, Maxx...

I would be more understanding if u were just joking around...But there have been a lot of popular/legendary acts on this board that people ride for...And when that well runs dry, this has been your way of commenting:

"RELIC!!!!!!!!"

Again, this can't be lost on u, right? How ironic this all is? Or maybe u just don't give a fuck...

Anyway...I just finished with a very high profile Kells project that u will be interested in hearing/reading....If u dig it, cool...If not, it's whatever...

Either way, Kells will be OK....Dude is a legend....He's got nothing left to prove...Just like all the other legends u trash from Al Green to Prince...

It is what it is....

yo I love Al Green and grew up on his music i just didn't care for no Questlove trying to recreate what willie Mitchell and crew did with him when the songs weren't there and also we had Prime and peak AL.

however I'm a huge Al Green fan, got his book and everything.

as for Prince i loved his stuff when i was a kid and he was badd back in the day. however he just ain't for my grown up tastes.

he never changed and truth is "Screwdriver" is a poor attempt by him and his other corny sexual based songs at this time and point which have no structure or songs there.

i never take away from his playing, talent and what i use to dig and like. He might be one of the Most Overrated acts ever and I ain't alone in that thinking, however he can play and for that short window of time he was something else.

but i ain't tripping on him.

and you know I support your projects and comment on them. i love your black to the future Hip Hop threads and i respond and dig those.

i hope you do one on G One personally.

anyway I'm looking forward to your R.Kelly piece you ain't even gotta ask i'm supporting it and I will tell the R.kelly forum when you link it up.

and i don't diss all acts.

Hmmmm....That's more a part of being a fan, right? U think Kells is the greatest male R&B act of all time...I think he's had a great run and deserves his props as a standout artist of his era...

I never said Kells wasn't great...This is more straw man shit...lol...And it has little to do with this debate...

Yep...u right...he doesn't have to sell another record...I agree...

The same way Aretha, Stevie, Prince, the Stones, Nas, Jay, ect have nothing left to prove...

I'm actually agreeing with you....

The debate comes with pointing out that you have shitted on people on this board for saying the exact same thing about their favorite acts...

It's hilarious...Shameless...But again, it's hard to be ashamed when you don't give a fuck...lol

Do you, dog....Kells will be OK....

oh every act is competitive and you and I both know this. and you know good and well Prince next year going to you name the bank and get a whole line of credit to cash in on next year don't even front. he will be Good Cop next year.

Aretha always wants to hit as well.

Lionel wants more Country love.

Jay Z wouldn't be doing those kind of deals if he wasnt't about selling no records.

your argument about not caring applies to me when you say Snoop because he doing reggae, funk and will drop a rap album and that pop hook and whatnot that Brother don't care he just drops whatever.

dr dre don't care because them headphones got detox in rehab for a while easily.

Nas cares about dropping product however he knows he ain't ever getting jigga love and he chilled.

you see Man it depends on the act you mention about not caring. I know Wynton Marsais don't care or Willie Nelson.

you outta throw names out there and I can tell you if they care or not.

if you is on these late night shows then you care period.

you still trying to get that new papers.

I get why the artists care...They are actually doing the work...Some want to go platinum plus...Others just want their voice heard...

I get why the ARTIST cares about record sales, adulation, and such things...

The question is....Why do YOU care?

because as a fan its something that says that said artist you follow has moved others.

you and I from the same school of life Brother and acting like a Off the Wall and thriller when they both took off didn't feel good.

i mean as a kid you heard the radio and liked the hit songs and was hype when said act took off. it felt like a family member hitting and you celebrated in their success.

and also back then for the most part to me when a artist had hit songs and hit records and sold then it felt right.

we grew up on hit songs and a casey kasem and what was in the Jukebox. not saying that i didn't dig lesser tier acts because i have, however it felt good to celebrate somebody hitting.

i have a good friend who grew up in Asia and dealt with 3rd world country rules and regulations and a great divide and needless to say a Michael Jackson happening 30 years brought a big smile and hope.

because we support said acts. think about it man you bought Prince albums as I use to and without our money then said act might be in a lounge somewhere and not ever being heard. without the fans support the acts ain't nothing in terms of what they become and lets be real

i know cats personally who can play in there sleep and not think twice however they didn't want to be bothered with the politics, etc..

we as consumers have a stake in said artists period.

we come from an era where you bought singles, albums, tapes, CD's and supported said acts. and its connected that way as a fan.

nothing out of the ordinary with what I'm saying. my cousin is Jennifer Holiday and she had to sell records after "and I'm telling you that i'm not going" i mean its the business and acts come on shows and tell folks to buy it period.

Say what you want about her but that woman puts in hella work to be where she is. Very impressive that they were able to keep this under wraps with no leaks or even a peep that it would hit in this day and age. Gotta listen to the album over the weekend to see if she came through creatively as well as she did from a marketing perspective.

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday morning when I saw this post. I thought the album was good overall. I already know what songs I like the most, I just went straight to the videos once I got it.

i guess 'ye is too cutting edge for 'r&b'

its been years since he did r&b joints like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7VzSkBvwwg

somewhere in between them '20/20-magnacarta sessions' pharrell+timb+justin putting in work

wonder if he thinks they all stealing his mbdtf-style record camp style?

i will say that the cover looks like some donda shit though...

>1. weakest album of her thin catalog
already showing bias.

>2. no memorable songs, so bad you had to have visuals for
>them
so we take the cool idea of having visuals for each track (which, quiet as kept a few big artists have tried for recordsand fail to keep up with like radiohead) and find a way to make it a negative and anti-song.

>3. self absorbed
unlike every other artist?

>4. hi Rhianna
double lol.

>5. album should have been kept for personal use
you mean we downing people making personal statements now as opposed to copy/pasting dr.luke and a dozen other songwriters chasing after a hit?

Basically the nigga tried to drop an ALBUM, no cheezy pop singles, a genuine hour long piece of work to try to get you fucks off her ovaries and y'all still hating.

Not the biggest B fan by a longshot, but you fucks make it hard to criticize if I get lumped with fuckers like you.

I've never been a Beyonce fan like that and I don't feed into hype machines, but this album is surprisingly cohesive. This is a good accomplishment considering there are multiple producers and she genre blends and bends a lot on this album.

he still is getting near the top with his week one sales 1)

working with Lady Gaga,Bieber and Bruno Mars 2)

hitting all these late night circuits and performing 3)

getting a budget and the press on every form of the modern internet

is full view 4)

believe me Keith Sweat, Marquez Houston, Brian Mcknight, Omarion, etc.. wish they had such problems.

the only other cats his age that are black hitting like him are rappers.

so he is rare company and far from done. however he made a good album, but not a great album IMO. still he has a pressence which can't be faded.

ain't alot of acts 2 decades deep still doing what he is doing.

heck you got acts a decade and less not even doing what he has done period.

It was few people on here a few months ago talking about Rhianna is more popular than Beyonce. I love Rhianna, but she's prolific. Beyonce doesn't have as many albums as her but she works hard. When people thought she was taking a break, she was on tour and working on an album and making videos for it. Rhianna is probably somewhere banging her head against the wall right now for not having this idea.

The profanity is a turnoff. I skip "***Flawless" after hearing it just once.

As for the DVD, it's not for me. By the 5th 6th 7th video, I was like we've everything but the inside of your vagina.
I enjoy Pretty Hurts, XO, Haunted, Drunk in Love (Jay was unnecessary). The rest... eh. It's not for me.

This is the first time that I've bought a Beyonce album. It's definitely eclectic. "Blow" written by Pharrell and the epic D'Angelo sounding "Rocket" written by Miguel are the best songs on the album. They stay on repeat.

and status in the musical landscape over the past decade, easily the best front-to-back record she's ever made even before you get into the videos which in sequence make a pretty cool movie of sorts.

I've always appreciated her from a performance, work ethic, handling-herself-publically, etc standpoint but musically up until recently I could honestly say that I probably had more Brandy songs I loved then solo Beyonce ones but damn she put in her bid with this album.

One of those albums where even if you hate her you might wanna just keep kinda quiet because fronting on it comes off a little silly.

There's two songs I don't like on here but everything else is very good to phenomenal. This is the "serious: album most pop acts dream of making.

the best thing about this album is that it sounds like HER.
not her producers. not whatever demographic she was aiming for.

it sounds like she had something to say and she said it.
the sexed up material doesn't sound forced or contrived.
it feels like she is in a relationship with a man she loves, an she's enjoying the joys of sex. she wrote these songs because that's what she was feeling.

it's also her clearest statement to date about how she feels about
being pretty, being famous, being powerful, being confident, and being a woman while being all the things i just listed.

this is the album that made me a fan.

also, i bought this album yesterday.
the timbiland beat change up on "blow" is insane.
i had this song on repeat for about 5 hours,
always waiting for the beat switch.

it is best ear-gasm i've had in years.

PopMatters pre-swipe with a RYM post-script.

In an era of popstars in which being a sexual edification is as much the goal as a #1 single, it's a bit funny how Beyoncé (sort-of) secretly cuts her first Really Good Album, and then when it appears out of nowhere it immediately displays the contrast between a rich girl plying her wares down by the hacky sack corner at a local community college and a grown woman wrapping a blindfold around the eyes of a man who's seen the world. Miley Cyrus spent most of 2013 trying to prove that listening to a bunch of 2 Chainz and Juicy J singles meant she understood what sex is, or how to portray it as a popstar. In just over an hour, Beyoncé renders that year - along with many a poptart before her - bad foreplay.

Let's be clear, Beyoncé is filthy on this album. She's hanging with stoners, she's had one too many shots, she's re-living her role in "Freakum Dress" and roleplaying the girl Amy Winehouse glorified for "Fuck Me Pumps" as though the stereotypes against those women as an inevitable crash and burn were absurd. It'd be easy to be offended by how brazen she is throughout this record, after all she's famous enough that we basically know how she looks naked even if the finer details (like how she smiles, or feels, or exists) remain mysterious and it's easy to be spiteful or jealous of her for living that reality. But this is also really her first attempt at bridging an audience, making music that makes the men want to hear what she has to say and the women feel like they can say it to men as well, or reminds them of the times they've similarly warned their man, to paraphrase, "I'm cooking food at home naked. Get the hell home."

Despite an army as deep and varied as any other Beyoncé album, what she's found here is an honesty that's just missing all too often from these sorts of raunch-fests. Beyoncé checks herself out in the mirror, post-childbirth, in a way that feels emotionally bare rather than physically embarrassed. I'd have expected her to go the latter direction on just about any other album, but whether it's the birth of her daughter or simply being absolutely comfortable with her position in life, she's able to approach sexuality as an honestly emotional position, not mere pornography. It's amazing to hear her cut a Prince song about intense cowboy-position sex with her man in a way that recalls the subtlety of ?uestlove's side-career helming R&B albums by Erykah Badu and D'Angelo rather than Rihanna bemoaning her ability to fuck, because it's all amounted to Wale.

Sexuality has been such an overt subject of pop music in the autotune era that it's no surprise Beyoncé essentially simulates a multiple-orgasm on this LP, or Jay-Z cops to being willing to "rape" Beyoncé on certain nights ("Ain't got the time to take draws off, on site / Catch a charge I might, beat the box up like Mike"), but it's a surprise that these subjects are only ever so brazenly sophomoric on their surface. Combined with the music from Timbaland, BOOTS, Detail, Pharrell and others, along with Beyoncé's typically nuanced - and finally well used - vocal performance, all of this stuff feels very now but also informed. "Goddamnit, I'm comfortable in my skin / and you're comfortable in my skin" Beyoncé sings to He Who Was Named Earlier on "Rocket", moments before she worries having a child has ruined her love life forever on "Mine".

It's also never been more fun to hear Beyoncé play like other people. It's obvious when she's pretending to be Jay, or The-Dream, or Drake, or Rihanna. But she's constantly winking at you, always giggling even at the smallest moments. Dare I say it's a very adorable performance from Beyoncé, oftentimes the most teenaged topics she's ever sang about translated through the knowing nod of a 30-year old woman who's been there, often still finds herself there but knows how to wade in the water. At one point I wanted to find a way to declare Beyoncé was becoming this decade's Sade with BEYONCÉ, but at the end of the day this album is far too bangin' for that. She's this decade's Beyoncé, grown secure and prominent as ever.

Turns out, 2013's pop wars were a whole lot of stage smoke. Watch the throne.

(Edit: Because I've never had good confirmation of this, I didn't include it in the PopMatters cut, but..."Heaven" comes before "Blue", and it is very sad and longing for something that seems cut short. Beyoncé has long had rumors swirling around her of having an abortion early in her career, which I'm not the type to pass a judgement on. But it sure does seem like "Heaven" is a song about that event, almost an apology for the song that follows it. Those last two songs really get to me in ways I wouldn't have ever expected given what most of the rest of the album is. After a little more remembering / Googling, it was a miscarriage that she talked about on Oprah and was very real. Mad love, Bey.)

I think Beyonce has acknowledged in the press (perhaps in her doc from last year) that she had a miscarriage earlier in her marriage to Jay-Z, and "Heaven" is generally understood to be about that, not about an abortion.

the power of a great promotional plan. 3 weeks at number 1 and 1.43 million sold, while "4" has sold 1.39 million since its 2011 release.

Hadn't heard anything until Partition and Drunk In Love tonight

There are some real gems on this album

I feel like all the hype and appreciation I've heard about it has been about the marketing angle but there really is a lot of great music in here

Blows away Magna Carta and the 20/20 joints. Great production and candid honest material - just sounds really cohesive and she sounds really comfortable on it

Really disappointed that the music has come second to the marketing, but I'll be listening for a while

How many songs on this are "popular"? As opposed to the five or six from 4?

What do people think of this album eight months later?
