A dude my Dad worked with made me a copy while I was in high school (this was 92 - 93ish) It was my first bootleg, but my first listen was a bit disappointing after months of anticipation.
The CD was even more disappointing, cuz it stripped out all the dirt and character.

Prince was trying too hard to prove he was black after criticism around that time. The only gem on that album is rock hard in a funky place and cindy c. Those are GROOVES!

that was the first time prince was reacting to stuff because hip hop had him shook.
it felt like he was on the defensive. but it still works for me because his funk is so damn strong. and also, maybe because of the mythology of the album...
it was such a hyped bootleg that maybe i can't view it objectively.
but to me, the only time the album falls flat on it's face is "when 2 r in love," which is the only song it shares with "lovesexy," an album that no prince fan can convince me is not crap... partially because of that goddamned album cover, which weirds me out to this day.

Good lawd....those cuts should just be called nasty dirty slop music cuz the grooves are so damn fonky.
And my original boot of The Black Album also had the "horns-less" Old Friends For Sale.... glad i knew that version first, it's just effin classic awesome Prince.
I often wish he woulda just dropped it in 87 just to phuck everybody's head up at that time.
