This shit is actually WORSE than "Recovery"...wow! I'll go on record and say that "Relapse" will probably be Em's last good album. I actually like that album and I never really got the hate for it. I'll take an accent over shout rap ANY day of the week. Dude can still rhyme, without question, but these "songs"?!! Naw........
I can't wait to see the production credits for this one.

Worst beats ever. The mixing/mastering are horrible. Hopefully this is an unmastered leak. Eminem is lost. Why all the sing songy hooks? Who is in his inner circle? I guess at this point it is par for the course, but this doesn't sound fresh at all....just plain garbeej.

I've listened to this twice via streams available online.

Why in the shit are So Much Better and Asshole on this album?

At this point, Em needs to pull a Plies and let someone else take over production and hook duties.

Standout tracks thus far:

Monster
Rap God
Legacy
Headlights
Love Game (Kendrick FUCKING SUCKS on this)
Headlights

No empathy for white misery (c) BDot

And I thought he crushed significant portions of Relapse and Recovery.

But on this album, he's reaching the outer boundaries of rhyming words together, lol. He's clearly experimenting with his flows and the lyrical results are amazing.

Doesn't always make good songs though. Some of these hooks are abominable. But it's still entertaining to listen to these rhyme patterns.

Bad Meets Evil was probably not an AOTY contender, but I listened to it more than most rap albums that year because the rapping is just pristine.

I suspect this will be the same kinda deal. Not mad at it at all.

Brilliant tracklisting, putting "The Monster" after "Stronger than I Was." That mess makes "The Monster" sound like Illmatic. Hearing anything after "Stronger Than I Was" is such a relief.

I don't do reviews much, but since Eminem is my "nigga", I'ma make an exception today.

I just listened to the album in its entirety (minus the bonus tracks i don't think have been released (leaked) to the public yet), and I got mixed feelings about it. I went in expecting not to like it because in comparing it to his sophomore album I knew it wouldn't live up to it. It still didn't, and I know most everybody is gonna say this, but the rappin' on here is amazing! I was reading the lyrics on rapgenius as I was listening, and if you look at the words, it will not do the multi syllabic patterns internal rhyme schemes and flows that this guy is doing any justice! If there is anything negative that I can say about this album, the beats are its biggest downfall. Lackluster production is what makes songs like "Asshole","Rap God","Rhyme Or Reason",and even "Love Game" feat Kendrick Lamar unlistenable. The other thing that takes away from some of the songs' quality is Em's sung hooks. He has been doing this for years, and although for some songs they work, they are never good. On this album, almost none of them work. On "Rhyme and Reason", Slim does his own version of The Zombies "Time Of The Season" and it is cringe-worthy. He touches on topics here and there that remind you of some of the content from The Marshall Mathers LP, but the songs that struck the cord the most in that regard are "Stronger Than I Was" and "Headlights". On the former track, the beat is okay, but Eminem is singing on almost the whole song, and we already know how bad he sounds when he sings. I like the subject matter of it being from the perspective of Kim, but the execution makes the song fall flat. "Headlights" is the better track of the two and finds him being honest as he talks about where he is in his relationship with his mom.
I like the fact that he was mature enough to apologize and to tell her that even though they are estranged, he still loves her.
Overall, die-hard Eminem fans and casual rap fans will probably like this album. Hip-hop heads will probably be very disappointed by this project, but still be in love with the rhymes. Where do I rank it amongst his past 3 LP's? It's better than Encore, more focused thematically than Recovery and lyrically on par but not ultimately a better album than Relapse (Relapse,MMLP,Recovery, then Encore).I probably won't go out and buy it, but as an mc, Eminem has proven once again that he is one of the G.O.A.T.s.

and I gottta say, some of these songs are his best in years (brainless, legacy and Evil Twin for example). Of course, like any Em album, the bad is bad. If any of the bonus tracks are good, we might just end up with 11-15 song album of good music. BTW, give "So Far" a chance. He's really on some Run DMC ole school shit there.

Like fuck this tea party bullshit and dime a dozen raps that are meant to impress who exactly? Like he wants to be a throwback on this one and pay homage, but it's like he can't even pay homage to himself by having a concept and sticking to it. I don't get when he got so defeatist and was like, no I'm not going to compete with other Mcees and I'm just going to rap on and on and on and on and on about relatively nothing, not have dr. dre produce shit on a cd named after a cd where they both had extra magic. (Bitch Please 2? Anyone?) Like these are the type of artists that are actually stealing from people giving them non challenging bullshit.
When are we going to have an interviewer calling out prominent artists about their contradictions in character? I'm very tired about this shit.

did 50 do a remake too?

**edit**

This sounds miles better than the majority of the material on the album. Dude has great technical ability, but I just don't care about the internal issues or whatever he raps about at this point. Was totally bored to tears listen to the album, and his singing on the hooks made the experience even worse. I'm certain the album will go emerald like he said on one of the tracks though.

MMLP2 lacks cohesion and focus. This is a strong raw track. Why not go in this direction for the whole album?

I'm thinking Jimmy Iovine would rather strap Eminem into an electric chair than have him release a boom bap record in 2013. That is if he's still Eminem's label head at this point.

I disagree. The album is far from great. It's not even good IMO.
You think he's trying to relive old antics on his past few albums?
That's exactly what he's doing on this one. Even going as far as
changing his hair color again. I still don't understand the hate for
Relapse around here. That's his best albm since 03.

No to everything you just said. Relapse was good, actually...if it were released in 2002...he was still talking about getting raped by his stepfather...jacking off to hannah montana, etc...nobody wants to hear that....yes, this album has some of that but its way more stripped down, personable and "grown up" to say the least. and sonically, this is a good album. This is everything Recovery should have been

There's an awful lot of angry, amateur A & Rs in this post

Anyway, upon initial listen, the album is fine

I rather dig the selection of beats, thank you very much

But it's two tracks too long, and the sequencing is just odd to me

As was the choice to sing over an entire track

But it's not as horrible as some of you are falling over yourselves to show here

It's pretty much all I can ask for from a MMLP sequel. I like how he brings issues and storylines from MMLP full circle, I like how he really goes in full rap nerd mode, and just like the original MMLP, there's a level of unpredictability to it. Evil Twin is fucking wow, and songs like Rhyme Or Reason and Brainless really make me think of the original MMLP.

Production could've used work, though. Makes me upset that Dre wasn't more involved, here. Also, not feeling some of the hooks.

It's a weird 4-star album, considering I don't love the beats and hooks, haha. But the enjoyability factor is definitely high for me.

i love rhyme & reason, love game, & survival. I wish someone would put rap god over a better beat. i like the beat on bad guy, but it's the one song i don't care for lyrically. i like the monster (i wouldn't mind em and rhianna working more together). stronger than i was is horrible. berserk isn't great, but for some reason, i like it. parking lot is hilarious. the rest i haven't listened to enough to comment on.

Eminem
The Marshall Mathers LP 2
Interscope / Shady / Aftermath; 2013
By
Craig Jenkins; November 6, 2013

The more the triumphs of Eminem’s world beating Slim Shady/Marshall Mathers/Eminem Show trilogy recede into memory, the more each subsequent release struggles to strike a tone that leverages an audience raised on the crass iconoclasm of “My Name Is” and “Kill You” with the aging, now sober father of three behind the music. As such, Em’s last decade worth of albums has suffered under jarring shifts in tone. After showing his first signs of`wear with 2004’s patchy Encore, Eminem rebounded with 2009’s Dre-beats-and-horrorcore-rhymes retrenchment Relapse. Relapse sold well but its serial killer shtick was uninspired, as Eminem openly admitted on the next year’s “Not Afraid” (“That last Relapse CD was ‘enh’”). 2010’s Recovery maneuvered out of Relapse and Encore’s chum bucket humor by detailing the artist’s struggle to overcome a long-simmering prescription drug dependency. Serious Eminem proved a drag despite Recovery couching its penitent 12-step dispatches in rivulets of the usual Slim Shady chicanery, so here we are staring down a once-more radioactive blonde Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP 2.

The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is an album-length bout of moral recidivism, Recovery’s motivational rehab narrative ditched wholesale for a second helping of the celeb-hating, self-deprecating juvenalia of Eminem’s beloved third album peppered with samples of and references to the source material. Opener “Bad Guy” is a sprawling epic that finds the brother of “Stan”’s titular obsessed fan hatching an elaborate revenge plot, and “Parking Lot” inexplicably revisits the heist in the middle of “Criminal” to inform us that the getaway driver split, and the shooter died. “Rap God” revisits a crass joke about the 1999 Columbine school shooting initially censored on the first LP’s “I’m Back”. Old nemeses like Insane Clown Posse, Everlast, and the Backstreet Boys are lampooned as well. But MMLP2 revisits more than just the characters and stories of the first installment. It also revels in its predecessor’s worst behaviors, bandying about misogyny and gay slurs as if Eminem’s conciliatory 2001 Grammys performance with a pink polka dot suited Elton John never happened.

“Rap God” is a gobstopping display of Eminem’s champion technical prowess that’s waylaid in every verse by brazen homophobia. “Love Game”, the hotly anticipated team up with Kendrick Lamar, is similarly assailed by lunkheaded chauvinism, both in Eminem’s gross rendition of a woman giving him oral sex and Kendrick’s barbs about a guy who “drowned like an abortion” and a clingy ex for whom “chlamydia couldn’t even get rid of her.” Elsewhere two songs are dedicated to crucifying the mother of his children and anyone else foolhardy enough to get involved with him. (“Bitch, you complain when you listen to this/ But you throw yourself at me/ That’s what I call pitching a bitch.”) Earlier in his career, Eminem delivered similarly gutbucket content with the shock of incredulity that anyone would find it offensive. It was an error of youthful carelessness. But in 2013, in the wake of the message of redemption he feverishly pitched us just an album ago, Eminem’s return to ruffling feathers carries the stink of desperation.

The only salvation for a lot of these songs is Eminem’s alchemical control of rhyme and diction, but even that can be a liability. Thirteen years after the original Marshall Mathers LP, the grating cadence-over-substance ethos of “The Way I Am”, once a stilted outlier on an album packed with otherwise limber wordplay, has now become the rule. “Legacy” pulls all manner of cockamamie pronunciation gymnastics just so Eminem can end every line with the same rhyming syllables, and the song’s decision to dispense with proper word accents and splay sentences haphazardly across the middle of lines makes for a flow that comes across overwrought and labored even as it plays Frankenstein with conventional word choice and rhyme patterns. Filler words frequently clutter lines just to make the rhymes look more dazzling, and in the process we end up with well-executed but empty lines like “I been driving around your side of this town like nine frickin’ hours and forty five minutes now” from “Bad Guy” and “The day you beat me pigs’ll fly out of my ass in a saucer full of Italian sausages” on “Legacy”. Play half of these songs alongside even the clunkiest Marshall Mathers LP cut, and the god of rap’s powers appear noticeably diminished.

MMLP2 does step out from under the shadow of its predecessor in its choice of collaborators. Dr. Dre sits this one out, appearing as an executive producer but steering clear of any actual grunt work. In his place we get a spate of productions from Eminem himself (often aided by pop heavyweights like Alex da Kid and Emile) alongside a newly in-demand Rick Rubin. MMLP2’s production mostly hews toward the expected stadium rap sounds, but the Rubin cuts award the album a measure of old school rap-rock flair. Unfortunately what sounded like invention for the 1986 Beastie Boys often plays like butt rock in the hands of 2013 Eminem. “Berzerk” turns Billy Squier’s “The Stroke” into questionable back-to-basics posturing, and “So Far…” grinds Joe Walsh’s winding 1978 epic “Life’s Been Good” and Schoolly D’s “P.S.K. (What Does It Mean?)” into fodder for Eminem’s middle-aged finger-waving. (“Fuck I gotta do to hear this new song from Luda, be an expert at computers?”) “Rhyme or Reason” cleverly flips the “What’s your name?/ Who’s your daddy?” refrain from the Zombies’ “Time of the Season” into a tongue-lashing for an absentee father, and “Love Game” makes good use of Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders’ “The Game of Love”, sexist lyrical putrefaction aside, but by and large, Eminem and Rubin are not a match.

Eminem is a titan with wordplay, but MMLP2 once again finds him at a loss for how to apply his talents. For three albums in the early aughts he devilishly rewrote the rules of pop music to shoehorn hip-hop into the national spotlight, but here he’s winded, struggling to keep up with modern pop conventions, genuflecting to trap on “Rap God” and EDM on “The Monster”, dragging his biggest competitor Kendrick into one of the worst songs of his young career, and soldering on hooks from singers of varying anonymity wherever applicable to ensure this patchwork monstrosity is too big to fail, all of this under the guise of a return to form, his second in three albums. Eminem’s too talented a rapper with too good a Rolodex for this to flop, but damned if Marshall Mathers LP 2 doesn’t give it a go. The lesson here, if there’s one to be gleaned from this 80 minutes of cold, clinical lyrical acrobatics, is that rap sequels are a lot like trying on old prom clothes: chance one if you dare, but the only thing you’re liable to display is how much you’ve let yourself go since your glory days.

Have your jaw drop by his rapping ability.

Laugh.

Be sad and angsty with his emo shit.

Scratch your head at his artistic choices.

Etc

Don't know if this is intentional--eg trying to please everybody. But there's something to catch me here depending on my mood.

Whether or not that adds up to an overall enjoyable record is a whole 'nother thing.

Not mad at this album. But I may tire of it after a week like all his other LPs lately.
