I prefer his earlier stuff to the completely over-the top thudded out style he adopted for so much of his solo career, but nobody is beating his relentless style on the first 2 Kool G Rap & Polo albums.

Hip hop records don't have to follow orthodox song structure in order to be 'good'. He has a grip of 'em on his first four alone. He could retire that argument starting there.
He used to be an excellent hip hop artist at times, but he swallowed the 'gangster-rap-pioneer' kool-aid, transformed his entire image and content to a mafia-thug slant and never looked back. The range he used to show has been forever obscured in the wake of that decision and G-Rap comes off as a character with limited ideas, but great execution. His music is not as interesting now as a result, but he still can still make 'songs'.

Great song = subjective. Hit records = objective.
Kool G Rap has 0 hit records, and that is what twists a bunch of people's ideology or memory of how nasty he was mic for mic.
When people think about someone's career they go to their discography and they go to the songs they've made, but like Slaughterhouse today, that ain't G Rap's forte.
While some others, Kane, KRS, Eminem, etc. can make hit records...AND rip the mic, G Rap couldn't do both. Which has people thinking less of him, but G was and is the GOAT if you listen to what that dude did on the mic alone.
For instance, Pac has a bunch of hits, but Pac never wanted it on the M-I-C with Kool G Rap, and a bunch of idiots have Pac in their top 2.

and I consider myself a Slaughterhouse fan. He's not the rap for the sake of rapping type of MC. G Rap has great "songs" in his catalog like Streets Of New York, Road To The Riches, Rykers Island, She Loves Me She Loves Me Not, Erase Racism, etc. You put on Road To The Riches or Talk Like Sex and people will go nuts if they are a fan of Golden Era Hip Hop.

RIGHT...IF THEY'RE A FAN OF THE GOLDEN ERA. Yeah those are good songs, but the people that truly FUCKS with those songs are the same heads that go nuts for The Diss-Masters Small Time Hustler. My point is we are talking about a small set of Hip hop heads.
But anyone will go nuts for Dear Mama, RAW, Unbelievable, Mona Lisa..and THIS is the sole reason why people have those acts over G Rap, but if you listen to the mic skills...none of those acts really want it with G Rap.
And no, I am not comparing Kool G Rap to Slaughterhouse, i'm saying they both have the same problem.
They can rhyme their asses off, but won't get their full due because "songs" aren't their forte.

G Rap is for the heads not really for anything other than that. Doesn't mean he couldn't make songs. He didn't crossover but that's not an indication of his ability to write songs which I would say is a problem for groups like Slaughterhouse.

Talk Like Sex, Streets Of NY and Road To The Riches belong right alongside Raw and Mona Lisa in that they will be appreciated by a certain audience of a certain age. Dear Mama isn't a good example because that was from one of the biggest rappers in history and it was his key crossover song. If My Homies Call is more of what I would compare it to. Great song but it didn't hit the non Hip Hop fans like his later songs. > > >And no, I am not comparing Kool G Rap to Slaughterhouse, i'm >saying they both have the same problem. > >They can rhyme their asses off, but won't get their full due >because "songs" aren't their forte.
That's where I totally disagree. G Rap has songs he just doesn't have crossover songs which is totally different. Your talking about having songs that your average person knows as opposed to songs that heads know. KRS doesn't have songs that your average person would know but you can't say he doesn't have songs. The general public really only knows Slick Rick for "Children's Story" but heads know he is way more than some one hit wonder.
G Rap was my favorite MC in 1990 (others were Cube, LL, Rakim, Q-Tip, Chuck, KRS, Special Ed, and Wise Intelligent. Kane was around there somewhere, lol).

He just misses my top 10. People sleep on Kool G big time but he is truly one of the all time greats. He was one of the early East Coast dudes that had the "gangster" style with high lyrical skill level down. I always thought that if he wasn't in the Juice Crew he might have actually had more shine because everyone was focused on Shan and then Kane.
