"Poll question: Where's KRS-One on your top emcee list?"

I was lucky to catch him during his solo run and had to go back and get the BDP albums. Return of the Boom Bap dropped my 9th grade year and was one of my favorite albums that year. He easily makes my top 10 list. Where is he on yours?

There are zero reasons to not have him in the Top 5.

Zero.

He fulfills both key criteria:

a) He was influential, a pioneer, etc.

b) He was actually a really creative, successful artist,
who did multiple things well, for a long, long time.
(he's not just the impactful guy who didn't succeed).
Even when his records lulled (in sales or quality), he
still put one among the very best live shows.

Both of these are key -- Slick Rick was a pioneer whose
career wasn't as long, diverse or successful. Same with
Kane, G-Rap. KRS was relevant and dope for a long time.
He's even put out quality music recently.

And there's a reason you see shit like this in 2013:

http://youtu.be/wLJMu1o9ba8

He made timeless, excellent music.

KRS is one of the greatest ever. A true pioneer. He's one of the MCs that drew me into hip-hop.

I wouldn't disagree or flinch if someone said he's their all-time favorite MC.

But if you're mad that I don't love him as much as you...

*shrug*

EDIT - I agree with everything you said about KRS in your post too.

Yeah, when I see KRS is Top 30 and things of that nature, I generally just leave out the debate.

If

1. Criminal Minded
2. By All Means Necessary
3. Return of The Boom Bap
4. KRS Self Title
5. I Got Next

(and I didnt even count Edutainment, Ghetto Music & other LPs/Songs)

6. Top 3 Live Performer in Hip Hop History
7. Self Destruction
8. Freestyle and Battle Skills
9. Produced most of his own songs
10. Longevity and impact

If there are more than 5-6 MC's more important than that and has skills I want to see that list.....to say 30 or more is not even worth me debating..

Okayplayer is funny sometimes...I get good laughs man..

no, these people don't understand that "all-time" means
that the people being discussed are supposed to be good at
the thing that we're discussing

Kris, Ra and Nas can swap depending on which day of the week you ask me, but there's no way he's slipping any lower.

Also, he has to go down as the greatest live emcee ever. Even nowadays he absolutely kills it.

i don't always bring him up, and i have done many threads and topics on various artists, however you got selective vision, coming to a theater near you. nor did i hear, you did. you wanted a cheap reaction to fit your agenda.

i use to buy tapes of boogie down production. the whole fam. Ms melody, d nice and Krs one.

i was answering the thread and question. and Krs one ain't in my top 5 ever.

i got Rakim, LL cool j, 2pac, Scarface and ice cube ahead of him. kool moe dee as well and maybe kurtis blow, depends on my mood.

i stayed on subject, stop sucking to the okp clique around here and be your own man. because that was weak at your attempt to get a reaction playa

if we went by most listened to it'd go more like

1. Lil' Wayne
2. Jay-Z
3. Nas
4. MF DOOM
5. Ghostface Killah

but that's probably not a winner either.
at least I'm honest.

The post said "top emcee", so it doesn't make much sense to pull out a math based list of discographies from all rap acts.

Like....Jadakiss would rank higher on a "top emcee" list based on skills, than someone like KRIT. But I would agree that KRIT's discography is much stronger. Or what if I say both of Dr. Dre's albums(he only has 2 solo's to his name) rank really highly so Dr. Dre is one of the "top emcees" ever? Nah. He's one of the great "rap acts" ever, and that's based on much more than just his 2 solos, but that's different discussion.

And an average of your ranking of discographies would favor current acts who are in their primes, who haven't fallen off yet. So it doesn't make much sense to use it when discussing the best "ever".

A group like EPMD would've had a damn near perfect discography in their prime, after their first 4 albums. But then comeback albums would bring down their "average". In which case.....who cares about an average? Nobody cares about a weak album released by someone 20 years after their prime(like that Rakim 7th Seal album). Those shouldn't even matter, IMO.

I've said many times my first official rap alum was Only Built for Cuban Linx, and I hated it for the situations I'd hear that album in.

But when did I start caring about rap? When Madvillainy and the Black Album remixes dropped.

But for the rest? As incredible as side A of Follow the Leader was, side B had a lot of filler.

And while they are very good albums, I don't think Let The Rhythm Hit Em and Don't Sweat the Technique's highs are quite as high as Kane's first two.

Well I think Follow The Leader and Let The Rhythm are just as good as Kane's 2 first albums and Don't Sweat The Technique is much better than Prince of Darkness which is probably Kane's worst album.

As for KRS he had a much longer run of quality albums than both of them. The reason I have Kane slightly lower than both KRS and Ra is that their highs were better than his highs and his lows were much worse than their lows especially when they were all in their prime.

Honestly I have this debate with people all of the time and the only MC's I can really "accept" being put over KRS are Rakim & Melle Mel. KRS literally embodies everything that Hip Hop is. If someone who doesn't know Hip Hop asks me to show them someone that represents the culture to the fullest the first person I think of is Kris. He has introduced more styles than anyone I can think of, he's the best battle MC ever, he's got classic songs, classic albums. His live show is by far the best of any straight up MC I've ever seen. He can drop battle rhymes, storytelling rhymes and drop knowledge all on one album and still have them all make sense.

new shit to the game.

was one of the illest and most prolific freestylers. changed the game in terms of complexity and cadence. seminal influence on golden age hip hop. one of few cats able to seamlessly meld form + content. was at the forefront of the ragga/rockers influence, but credibly so.

over the years my esteem for him went down a bit as he seemed more concerned about self-promotion. using the last poets 'the revolution will not be televised for a fucking nike commercial was unforgivable from one of the more educated and seemingly genuine 'conscious' emcees. subsequent magazine articles had him saying that the whole 'the teacher' thing was a marketing / packaging ploy (or at least that's how i took it).

STILL... he is no doubt one of the illest of all time. a brilliant bridge between old and new school, battle rap and album rap, a stalwart repper of hip hop culture.

and more importantly, one of few cats who really impressed me lyrically. his use of space, cadence, etc, is among the best of all time. like, South Bronx was the shit. but the first time i heard 'Poetry' was a legit aww shit moment. on par with when i first heard Sucker MCs.

KRS-ONE means simply ONE KRS,
that's it, that's all, single, solo, no more no less

if you wanna rap, you need to study that shit. on paper its aight, but the delivery was unlike anything i'd ever heard in hip hop.

and i don't think any the other giants who were out contemporarily with him could see him as a freestyist.

peace & blessings,

x.

you could do that with music.

I didn't know what THAT was.

I remember hip hop before THAT.

But THAT song. THAT video.

It was just it.

I really felt I knew so much about one dude from a song, and wanted to know more.

I know my top 3 is Nas, 3k, Thought (in that order)

but after that it gets hazy for me, like I don't even know who exactly I would pick or in what order.....KRS obviously comes to mind....as does Rakim....Rae...Ghost......

but after years I still can't decide hahaha

Your top 3 is the same as mine (I've recently moved Thought ahead of Dre though) and like I always say...they're my top 3 favorite MCs.

Meaning, I grew up listening to them and there's really no other MC that I would want to listen to ahead of them.

A lot of these dudes on here know exactly who is supposed to be I their Top 10 and that's who they put whether they actually believe it or not because they feel it somehow validates their hip-hop opinion.

I can see if you put Drake, Kanye and Wayne as your top 3 but even then...the same would apply if those are your 3 favorite MCs that you want to listen to.

We all know Rakim's place and if we're judging greatest MCs of all-time...he really should not be lower than 3.

but the question was where do we have them ranked so many people, myself included, took that as, where is he among our favorites (KRS)

as in my initial response, KRS is a top 5 all-time great, but if you're asking where he ranks as one of my favorites, I'm going to be honest.

I'm more tied to MCs like Mos and AZ because that's who I've listened to all my life. I wasn't quite old enough for KRS.

I expect dudes like MySP to have their top 5 be Rakim, KRS, BDK, Kool G and Rick.

That's who they grew up on and are most tied to.

People just don't know how to look at this shit through other people's lenses.

And if they really wanted to argue Black Thought vs someone like BDK...that shit is not ridiculous.

There are 3 things in hip-hop that automatically boost MCs to the "safe zone" and those are; a universal classic album, dying early, and being a respected pioneer.

Relate that to sports. A universal classic album is like winning a championship which puts dudes like Eli Manning ahead of QBs he simply isn't better than. Dying early is the same thing...as well as having a career ending injury. How many times have we seen documentary discussing "what if so and so never got injured". And being a respected pioneer will keep you on that list. Someone like Jerry West could never physically match up to someone like Lebron but it's relative and West killed shit in his era so he's ranked up there.

That's where the difference comes in. And this stems a bit from the 6 Albums post. There's no way someone is telling me the production on Paid In Full is better than the production on and album like Moment of Truth. But, Rakim is a pioneer...he was ahead of his time lyrically, and he was influential. It's like all of those things boost that album above other when really, the quality of the music is not. I didn't jump into the conversation but the instrumental joints definitely are a knock against it to me. And as dope as Ra is lyrically, that production is just not up there with the best...period. I understand at the time is was, but times change. We either can't compare different generations or we have to compare them based on the actual level of quality.

So going back to BDK vs Thought. Other than being a pioneer and influencing other MCs, how does BDK honestly stack up? Dude was crazy nice and dropped what...2 quality projects and then fell off? Thought has been getting better since for 20+ years, is one of the best freestylers of all-time, has a stage presence that can rival damn near any body. It's clearly at the point where I'm not going to second guess anyone for having either listed above the other.

But when people come on and act like having Thought listed up high or for having an MCs outside of the "safe zone" go-to answers is out of question...I start to question how much they actually know about hip-hop.

people flipping shits when your top 5 doesn't look like the top 5 they have had for the past 20 years.

With the albums all 3 MCs I listed have I don't really think its ridiculous to think that someone might have them up there

I get clowned by Lesson-types all the time for stuff like these last.fm stats:

1: Lil' Wayne - 3,979
2: Beat Konducta - 2,696
3: Curren$y - 2,474
5: Jay-Z - 2,094
6: Gucci Mane - 1,902

but, that's just where my life went. Enter the 36 Chambers and Illmatic ARE honestly my two favorite hip-hop albums, and KRS-One honestly IS the best rapper I feel I've ever heard...but those are the artists I've enjoyed most in my life. I don't like that people see the Madlib instrumental albums in the middle of that list and think it's a joke or a token. Or that I wouldn't tell you Lil' Wayne has been a mostly terrible rapper for at least four years now.

I'm the one always saying that is how it should be.

My response was that KRS was somewhere in my top 20 but if I'm talking greatest MCs then he is without a doubt top 5.

I think most people took this post as, where is KRS among your favorite MCs.

The only rappers I confidently feel are better than KRS are Nas and Rakim.

After that....I got KRS, Kane, Cube, Chuck D, LL, Scarface.....it's tough to put one ahead of the other, with a group of rappers like that. It can change from time to time.

because clearly MCs like Chuck D and Face (2 of my favorites) are not better at rapping than someone like Black Thought or Mos Def.

Skills, impact, discography, etc. Everything. So yeah, maybe "greatest" is the better word. I don't really agree that Scarface and Chuck aren't as good at rapping as Thought or Mos. They're not as good at certain aspects of rapping. Scarface couldn't spit a "Concierto of Desperado". Thought couldn't make "I Seen a Man Die". They have different strengths, but they're both great emcees.

I've got no problem with Thought being way up there. I got him right up there too, along with Redman, Biggie, Andre, Q Tip, etc. along with those I already named.

Mos, I can't put him up quite that high. Even though I'm a fan and is/was very talented, I don't think he did enough. He just doesn't have as much dope songs, albums, verses as these others.

I would be willing to bet that Thought's s set would lend him to making an I Seen A Man Die before Face's skill set would lend him to making a Concerto. Either way...two of my very favorite MCs.

I guess I can agree but to me he has Black Star, Black On Both Sides and The Ecstatic.

That's 3 great albums to me. And in my opinion, when he goes in...no many are as good or have as strong of an all around skill set.
