@lordjamar: I just figured it out... Hip Hop is turning into Revenge of the Nerds

I know most of the older heads here respect Lord Jamar. Do you agree with his comment? He said some more shit on twitter too.

@lordjamar: what I mean by that is THE STREETS gotta be ready to follow u into battle & ride for u in oder to be considered as K.O.N.Y.

@lordjamar: The corny dudes who got slapped up in the hallways of J.H.S. are the ones dominating right now.

>@lordjamar: The corny dudes who got slapped up in the hallways
>of J.H.S. are the ones dominating right now.

See, the thing that people don't understand is that the fans dictating what's hot are ALSO the corny dudes who got slapped up in the hallways of J.H.S.

That's why they will forever respond with "you're mad" because they simply don't get how easy that shit is to see through and why we don't respect them or the music they ride for.

So when Drake runs down one of his bitch made lines and stops to say "oooooohh" for half of a fucking wasted bar, we can tell how corny he is because you HAVE to be corny to make some of those sounds. And then not only make them but listen back and think "yea that's hot keep that".

Furthermore, fans of that shit are corny as fuck too because they don't understand why the shit is corny. That's why this hip-hop shit is so wack nowadays.

Lord Jamar again has this shit correct.

They have some of the most suspect ass taste and it usually comes off as them not wanting to speak negatively on other artists.

That's why you have artists like Common who write and rap lyrics clearly directed at types of artists you read about them co-signing.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar are on two different paths at this point...

For those who don't see that are either not really listening to the music, old as fuck (hell I'm an old head and I can even see that shit...lol) or is just being intellectually dishonest...

Just saying...

Oh...I'm not saying u specifically...I'm talking about others who paint the new generation of mainstream MC's with one brush...

This is what Lord J is doing...Who do you think he was tweeting about? lol....To him, Kendrick is no different than Drake...He probably would much rather bump Gucci Mane...

and style deficient.

They sold their whole shit on being nerds from their first video & fit the bill more than some dudes like T.D.E.

Now if we're talking Drake, well that dude's a Canadian child-actor, I don't even know *what* that shit is called. I'd have probably went more for douchebag or cornball then a true nerd.

But yeah De La, Pharcyde, some of Hiero, Eminem, Zev Love X, Kweli, and others would qualify if this subject actually mattered.

The irony of us being on a site created by one of the unabashedly biggest & best nerds of his generation while a cavalcade of chumps (or at least a much higher percentage of socially-challenged luckless lames than the national average) in this forum play out their Homecoming King fantasy behind a keyboard while co-signing the new batch of bitter ramblings from the Vin-Rock of Brand Nubian because they don't dig the current crop of rappers is just too rich for my blood.

Most hip hop heads or fans of anything (movies, sports, sneakers) "nerd out" on those very things they're fan of. Doesn't make them a nerd though.

I know niggaz that "nerd out" on some Polo, couldn't call them nerds though.

Just regular dudes too. Just not typical West Coast/Oakland rappers. Regular cats that rapped about and got bitches, liked money, were smart, and did regular shit.

No it's completely relevant, because you're trying to draw some kind of connection between us being on Okp and pointing out that what Lord Jamar said had some truth in it.

Rappers, Athletes, everybody can nerd out on certain shit. Doesn't make them nerds though.

Uh, there's some genuine gumps on this site, my dude.

Quite a bit actually, which makes the posturing in this post all the more hilarious.

It's higher probability of it on OKP than amongst the GP & probably higher in this forum than in OKS or GD.

calling out people for nerdisms. Fuck does that even mean... Let Hip-Hop progress like it always has. I was not all that blown away with the KL verse, but it's over the top that these artists are so offended.

FInally, Lord Jamar was also my least favorite BN. Basic upon basic flow patterns, he should be the last fool to be tweeting about this.

i do wonder if this is purely a generational thing, and if other generations experienced this, i.e. if the men of the "greatest generation" thought the baby boomers were soft, and if the baby boomers think gen x is soft, etc.

Puba and X were just miles ahead better than LJ....This is not a shocking point...In that context he was indeed the Pras of the group...And yet he had his moments (just like Pras...hell even more at times)...

His verse on "Slow Down" was pretty cool...As was "Punks Jump Up" and "Love Me Or Leave Me Alone"...But more often than not he was a forgotten man in his group...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Pras was/is not a good emcee at all, but Lord Jamar had moments, but he's one dimensional with subject matter. I think that he resembles Willie D in that manner (although I think Willie D is probably a better emcee), but I view Lord Jamar as a bigger contributor to his group than Pras.

To the larger point, I don't think that he is completely wrong nor is it such a bad thing, but hip-hop has changed and it's comparably softer in some ways.

are we defining nerd as a person who was really all into the thug/street life like that or is based on how you express intelligence in your music. because to me take a mc like Jay-Z, that guy has to be a nerd to memorize multiple songs in his head without writing them down. Being a nerd is not a bad thing. The one thing no one should want to be is fake.

Gotta remember he's speaking from that loser ass mentality we often
have in the black community. Anytime a mfka wore clothes that fit
in that baggy jeans era, they were called corny. When you ain't out
tryna be a thug and actually got your head on straight, 18 yr old girls
will call you corny (until they got 10 kids by Lil Junebug, then a "corny"
nigga is a good man who don't want they ratchet ass).

This "corny" name-calling is no longer respectable. This is one way in
which I'm proud of this new generation of rappers. They're more mature
than so many of you old idiotic niggas who champion ignorance. It's like
when Common came at Drake calling him all kinds of hoes and bitches,
as opposed to how Kendrick called cats out in a friendly yet competitive way.
The shit Kendrick did was mature. Common sounded like a 3rd grader.
That shit was cool back in '92, but Hip Hop as a whole has matured,
and yall old niggas don't respect nothing but childishness and dumb
ass name-calling. Move over, these young niggas are showing yall
how to grow up.

And this makes his hypocritical. If the nigga was really responsible,
this kind of dumb shit never would have come outta his mouth. We all
know what cats mean when they call you "nerd" and "corny" in HS.
He's perpetuating that ignorance after all the "responsible" music
he made... which makes it twice as dumb, because he should know
better. "Beef" ain't killing one another to this new generation. They
have evolved and he mad. Plain and simple.

you sound like a butt hurt dummy

your first response to my post was "many times corny...."

so even in your subject line you allude to your own interpretation of what corny meant.

no where did lord jamar say anything about education or any other that shit you said.

he said "cats that got beat up".

smfh... in the 80s being cool and smart weren't mutually exclusive

you know how many songs they got about knowledge of self and education ? lol

he made two tweets. u wrote two paragraphs... you ain't do alot of interpreting?

some of you niggers need to put the Internet down and go read something

you prolly was gettin beat up in jhs

And if cats got beat up? What does that mean? They shouldn't rap?
Even if you take his words literally, he's championing physical violence
and saying those on the receiving end of physical assaults aren't
worthy of creative expression, which AGAIN makes him idiotic to
"drop knowledge" and claim to be uplifting the black community and
then turn around and perpetuate this "tough guise" bullshit.
You defending it makes you idiotic too. It is what it is.

For all the "ignorant music" this generation makes, they don't have an East/West
beef like we did. KRS One is one of my favorite rappers and made
GREAT music about pertinent social issues, but he was about creating
real beef in the name of "Hip Hop" like the issue with PM Dawn.
Today, a cat like KRS would easily exist alongside KRS with no issues.

It's about the way this new generation interacts with one another.
Funny how the old niggas can't see any positives in this new generation
but miss all the bullshit they themselves were on.

What he said was wack. I care not for these rappers as people. If you say something stupid its still stupid, no matter how much dope music you have made. I can listen to your music and still think something you said was misinformed.

Nah..people are shitting on the weakest member of Brand Nubian for popping shit about hip-hop nerds because he has an antiquated view of what constitutes as....hip-hop.

and let us not forget he & Sadat have said some of the most homophobic and sexist things ever committed to vinyl.

he's a very opinionated/outspoken person. there's nothing wrong with that, but he's also often loud & wrong.

to imply that he's the Pras of Brand Nubian, however, is understating his skill level drastically.

Yep...

Compared to Puba and X he is indeed their Pras....But of course Lord J is a better Pras who could occasionally bust out some credible rhymes...

But let's not get it twisted...When most folks think of B.N. Lord J is the last dude that comes to mind in the big scheme of things...

The fact that he is tweeting dumb shit, it's easy to take jabs at the nigga and NOT BRAND NUBIAN.....

id never try to argue that hes the "best" in the group, he was always just my favorite for some reason. i think i just like his flow, and the way his deeper vocal tone played against the higher pitch of puba and sadat as well.

so i would argue that it IS one of his "natural" rapping voices (he has a couple, which is fairly unique in and of itslef)
but i think guru was probly referring to a crop of folks - kendrick, chance, etc
im just saying its nothing new, from sadat to q-tip

just because someones speaking voice doesn't match up with their "performance" voice...so what? that doesn't make it contrived. its just how they perform.
and if you happen not to like it, it's not any less annoying just because thats "the way they talk." it can still be described as cartoonish.

How does a rapper who's whole lifestyle is being a 5-percenter and claim to have read tons of books on race & religion, and then being witty and rhymes about politics and religion the majority of the time have the nerve to call any rapper a nerd & diss them?

Lord Jamar was the main reason why Grand Puba & Sadat X has beef in the first place and now I see why.

He's wrong cause he's mad rappers don't need a hyper-masuculine "tough guise" to be a mainstream success, but that's actually a good thing

but when he says that artists are now less masculine than the previous era, no matter how you are I feel about it, he's right
and it is being marketed that way on purpose, it didn't happen by accident, but it's not a conspiracy theory by any means

it's not being marketed that way "on purpose"

the rap industry pushed a hyper masculinity for a long time. Everyone had to be "gangsta"

but all of a sudden, the industry is pushing "nerds"?

nah. the collective taste has just evolved. It's been like that since College Dropout basically

Kendrick's buzz came from Dre taking him under his wing, he just so happened to have material before then that was of good quality (he wasn't called KL then so nobody really knew him)
Drake's success was built-in considering his fan base and his family connects, so that's not exactly a grassroots rise either way

>it's not being marketed that way "on purpose"
>

yes it is-you come out hulking all over people and bringing guns out and you'll not only be told to curb your material, but you'll also get a makeover that makes you look like a child with a gender identification issue

>
>the rap industry pushed a hyper masculinity for a long time.
>Everyone had to be "gangsta"
>

it was just the archetype that was selling then, it wouldn't matter what it was really as long as it sold

the industry is pushing a softened male image, which Jamar is incorrectly calling nerdish

>

'evolved' is definitely the wrong word to use here, it's just changed and it'll be something else as soon as something comes along that's easier to sell
and it just may be the gangster shit again, even though I hope not

I also never made a comment on my opinion of his stance before saying I didn't agree with him (which STILL doesn't mean he's wrong at this point, just that I don't agree) and that his label of 'nerd' was incorrect (which came later and was me saying he was wrong about that particular part, the lowering of masculinity in the music he was right about)
I said people in this thread are being reactionary because they like the artists he's talking about and not really thinking about what he's saying beyond that
unlike you apparently, I can look at a statement and not get emotionally involved in it and use what's in front of me as a basis for my own viewpoint

Back in his era, there was like one rapper for every neighborhood/burough/area/etc. People chose who was their rapper back in the day. If some no name nigga in the neighborhood said that he rhyme, then he'd have to go through the gauntlet and the people would chose him.

Just like Queens chose Nas, just like Brooklyn chose Biggie, etc.

With the internet and all the rest of the new shit, that old choosing a rapper shit isn't reigional anymore

Well they used to call me Maf

Grand Puba in his fucking girbaud jeans with a damn backpack on and flowery shirts and shit. Them mofo's is from New Rochelle! They ate off of that De La Soul plate which was definitely left of the LL Cool J, Rakim and other swagger filled "hardcore" MC's. Even among the Pro Black era rappers they weren't PE, Paris or X Clan. I remember when "Punks Jump Up" came out how much I loved the song but also how surprised I was that a group like Brand Nubian made that song.

They were touring with all of those Native tongue acts and plenty of them were getting the oh these are those type of rapper looks.

True....all you have to do is watch "Peach Fuzz"....There was nothing "hard" about that clique back in the day...While they were all about 5 Percent Nation ideology BN were not "street" as the Wu would later capture...That street change came later with the second album BN album....

If you consider that a "hit" then so be it. Puba was the man no doubt about that. He made Brand Nubian cool but the point stands they were not the hardcore cool mofo's that Lord Jamar is trying to act as if they were.

>he was one of the coolest niggas in hip hop ALWAYS
>
>the niggas below/above dont know what they talking bout
>either....cosigning this BS

Cosigning because it's true. Brand Nubian was not some hardcore street/cool dudes. They weren't LL, Rakim, BDK or any of the rappers who were looked at as cool. They were much like the cats from Native Tongue. It's not a slight I loved that shit but the whole point was Lord Jamar saying rap is run by nerds now and that "the streets" determine who is King is funny/ironic considering how they were perceived when they first came out. Dudes from New Rochelle acting like they are extra street is funny to me.

No they "ran" with them because they did. They recorded together, toured together and were friends.

I personally think a few of these older rappers are quite salty about things. Its understandable to an extent, but at the same time they can still write and mc, they still have a voice.

I also believe when Kendrick was asking the new guys to step their game up, it also applies to the old bitter guys too.

I mean this whole tweeting about nerds and high school is a defense mechanism.

At the bottom of it, BN was becoming salty in 98' with that single 'dont let it go to your head' in response to the jiggy shit ruling the airwaves around that time. That shit bricked like a broken iphone.

If Lord Jamar really wanted to say something worthwhile, instead of confining himself to 140 characters in a tweet, he could pick up a notepad and write something to try and teach.

He could write something to try and compete.

like Brand Nubian subsequently got lost in the shuffle before being dropped altogether while Dotty X & Puba put out indie solos, egos reared their heads again, Puba still stayed lazy, Sadat still courted trouble, the music industry itself was detonated, by the time the smoke had cleared to get to Fire In The Hole 6/7 years had passed and they were on Babygrande doing Kreayshawn numbers.
