"List your top 10 rap albums so far this year"

I just want to make sure I don't hate current rap as much as I think I do. Maybe I missed something. Only rap albums I like this year is that Albert Einstein joint and the Run The Jewels LP. The Night's Gambit was solid too.

Falcons, Braves, Bulldogs and Hawks

Geto Boys, Poison Clan, UGK, Eightball & MJG, OutKast, Goodie Mob

80 Blocks From Tiffany's Part II
Twelve Reasons To Die
Magna Carta

Yeah, by 7 or so it starts getting real borderline at best, not a lot of young cats in there either whereas last year seemed to be a lot of good releases from the new kids.

ASAP & Cole albums were 'aight' but I'm not that big on either, I didn't really give Tyler's album a full listen but have halfway given up on him making a viable album anyway at this point, can't bring myself to listen to a full Mac Miller album.

I'm hoping/expecting F.I.L.A. by Rae, Oxymoron by Schoolboy Q & Doris by Earl Sweatshirt to be in there by the end with maybe another surprise or two to bump the Ghost/Adrian Younge or Hov out.

There's also some more underground releases I haven't got around to giving a full listen yet.

The Night's Gambit. I think it has a case for best hip hop album of the year. Though I do fully understand why some people don't feel it at all, but it's certainly worth one listen through.

kidding (but not really).

Yeah, this is one of those things I can respect on some level (it's like Roc Marc's recent style taken to its Quaalude-scarfing extreme) but not really my thing upon first listen.

I kinda liked the way he sounds on that GZA album better.

similar to a lot of the madlib criticisms in the past it seems like folks are overlooking this being his creative choice & not some defect in his style or ability

Ka seems to be for aging heads who aren't interested in keeping up w/ the trends of the youngins but still want creativity & originality in their hip-hop

Wouldn't claim this sound wasn't his 'intent', just said I preferred earlier cuts like the ProTools feature & that this drumless/spoken-word style isn't my thing even tho I respect what he's doing.

I like Roc Marc but this joint upon first listen goes to far down the rabbit hole for me.

but I've also REALLY fallen off listening to most new music the second half of the year.

only change has been Drake knocking Yeezus out of the running.

4. ASAP Rocky-Long Live ASAP

I still have to check out Ka's album which I've heard good things about. Jay's album would be on here if would have cut about 5 or 6 songs.

there isn't really anything that i can say is my favorite or the best for this year. only thing i can think of is the ugly heroes album and even that isnt the best to me. there's other albums, but i only like 1-2 tracks on each. been a pretty weak year for hip hop

Tree: Sunday School 2

Chance The Rapper: Acid Rap

Kanye: Yeezus

Curren$y: New Jet City

Kevin Gates: Luca Brasi

Run The Jewels: Run The Jewels

Action Bronson: Saaaab Stories

Mac Miller: Watching Movies...

KA: Night's Gambit

Pete Rock and Camp Lo: 80 Blocks... Pt. 2

This year really picked up around May or so. I liked the Tyler album and a few others but couldn't really see them making the top 10, especially with the shit that has yet to be released (Danny Brown, Schoolboy Q, Black Milk, the triple Gucci tape etc etc)

Still listening to JonWayne's Cassette 3, liked Joey's Summer's Knights and the second half of Yeezus. I haven't got around to Dour Candy, KRIT, SAAAB Stories, Albert Einstein, or Durag Dynasty. KA is not for me. That shit is nyquil.

Looking forward to Q and Danny Brown, but their leaks/singles have only been aight to not good. Also Stalley's tape is sounding damn good

Haven't given that Pete & Camp Lo joint enough spins to definitively say anything but from what I have heard, it would be in there as well.

Its his most creative and diverse shit since his early days with Dilated and Defari. He was bis most one note during those street/thug joints with Mobb Deep and DBlock. Al Been the best doing it for 3 years:

Spitta, both Gangrene records and the EP, Greneberg, Bronson, Domo all top to bottom production that's been killing. he's given heat to Hodgy, Mac Miller, Bodega Bamz, and Mayhem Lauren. Even his solo Russian Roulette was good.

Even when some of the rappers are boring, shitty or mediocre Al's beats have saved the day.

add Schoolboy Q to that list.

I prefer Bronson over Harry Fraud beats tho, on Alc stuff the Ghostface thing feels more obvious since they're beats Ghost would rap on.

if you listen to nothing else ALC has been doing lately, listen to Albert Einstein.

don't go into expecting to hear Prodigy spitting like it's 97, or to hear Alchemist chopping samples like it's '98. they both changed their steez and the shit works.

Tony Touch's new one is also really good, even though it's very similar to Statik's album.

Acid Rap by Chance The Rapper is the best one I've heard

Planet Asia and Gensu Dean's "Abrasions" was dope.

J.Cole's "Born Sinner" had a couple of joints that made the cut... same goes for
"Run The Jewels".

Looking forward to Earl's "Doris", but I'm kinda afraid he's gonna use his drowsy
delivery for the duration of the album (I miss the Earl from "Molliwhopped" & "Assmilk")

Wise Intelligent is about due for another album. I always enjoy his joints.

Also looking forward to No Malice's "Hear Ye Him" believe it or not.

I'm fine with not having a ton of new releases, since I still have a vast store
of shit I can listen to. I love Hip Hop and am pretty sure I always will. The
only thing that has changed about my listening habits is that I have much less
tolerance for "okay" shit. Either it bangs or it doesn't.

And I can't even think of any others that I even "kind've liked".

Bad year so far. 2012 was much better.

...for me, Chance's Acid Rap is the only rap release that's looking to make my "best of 2013" list at the moment.

And that one had to grow on me.

Spitta's New Jet City was decent. As was Gibbs' ESGN. Ace Hood's LP was surprisingly cohesive even if I'm not rushing to listen to it again. But nothing else, thus far tho...

Maybe Black Milk's new one will reverse the drought?

Number 1 for me, by FAR, is Run The Jewels, to be honest this year nothing has came close for me this year...

here is the rest of my list in order

ScienZe - Ella
Tall Black Guy - 8 Miles To Monart
Marco Polo - Newport Authority 2
The Dopplegangaz - Hark
Big KRiT - King Remembered In Time
Tyler The Creator - Wolf
Ghostface - 12 Reasons To Die
Czarface
Ben Jamin - Radio Waves

Other than that I've only heard like 2 other rap/hip hop releases from this year, the Kid Tsunami album and the new Joey Bada$$ album, liked both of them. This year feels kind of slow...idk...

edit: Ok looking back I realize 2012 was pretty fucking great....this year so far pales in comparison

Chance was dope but I usually don't mention "mixtapes" when doing my lists. Guess I should change that since most of them are basically albums. Not a fan of Bronson. I've given him many listens and he just doesn't do it for me. Not familiar with Tree or The Underachievers but I plan on checking them out eventually.

Nah...It got the majority of its acclaim in 2013...It feels more like a 2013 album, ruling much of that year, than a 2012 release...Not to mention that it went beyond just being a hit album....Folks are already calling it a classic...

I don't know, maybe it's living in LA but that album feels two years old to me by now.

I love it but I'm sorta turned to other things & waiting to see what Q is gonna do to extend TDE's run before K-Dot's next one.

Run The Jewels
Born Sinner
Watching Movies with the Sound Off
Saaab Stories
Ugly Heroes
Kweli
12 Reasons to Die (but the Brown Tape version)
Wolf
Magna Carta Holy Grail
Yeezus

really like Czarface, RA the Rugged's album, and Tony Toca's and Statik's too. bada$$'s was pretty good.

haven't heard enough of Pusha's to decide. the Pete/Camp joint either.

didn't like the Prodigy/Alc joint, thought Prodigy sounded terrible. A$AP Rocky's I liked more than I thought but not top of the year dope to me. didn't like Wale either. or the Curren$y shit.

and apparently I need to stop sleeping on Chance's album.

Nothing else had made that type of impact on my rotation. We will see how I feel about 80 Blocks pt. II come October. Still have yet to dig in on "Albert Einstein", "Kismet" & "Twelve Reasons", but at some point I will get around to those.

flipping old samples in interesting ways but the rapping & content felt forced.

Drug music for people who never really did drugs.

Whole thing felt like that guy in your freshman dorm that never smoked weed until he got to college then couldn't stop talking about it & working drug references into conversation thinking he was cool.

The aural equivalent of John Stewart's character in 'Half Baked'.

that shit man....smh

production was decent to good
lyrics/rhyme schemes and all that ranged from really bad to good

his voice was weird at first but I got past that....but the WAY HE RAPS SON!!! It just came off like it was for young people for some reason IMO

and I'm young...I'm 21 lmao (but I'm on the lesson so....)

I didn't get a psychedelic/acid vibe from it at all. Maybe thats because I listen to allot of music from the 60s that is ACTUALLY acid-ish/psychedelic

in terms of that vibe in hip hop.....EDAN did that shit with Beauty and The Beat

drug use and is more about a kid growing up in the decent parts of Chicago navigating the city's good and bad and having hella fun doing it.

while his voice bothered me in the beginning, i quickly got over it. His rapping is borderline phenomenal, clever and witty. the sing-songy angle (that stylistically too many folks attribute to Drake, like Puba wasn't doing that in 94) only adds a pop sensibility to it all.

its such easy listening and reminds me of Bizarre Ride era Pharcyde

I loved the weird voice, the scatting and the whole fun feeling of it all. The kid went to church and he sounded so hype, so happy as if he didn't give a fuck if nobody else enjoyed his album. He had already won by then.

It remains an easy choice so far for Album of the Year for me. Rolling Stone featured it in the best albums of the year too, so you know lots of folks stood up and took notice.

I'm not exactly sure how that's actually a criticism; so he mis-marketed what the album would sound like. I wouldn't really hold marketing against an album's actual content.

Earl Sweatshirt album is solid. Only about three or four cuts I skip

Ugly Heroes is solid mainly for the production. None of the emcees really standout to me.

The Dour Candy is a good one too. The emcee throws me off a bit but the production is solid throughout.

I got you covered.

I'm not a crazy KP fan. I've listened to Heavy Mental, and like a few tracks here and there on his other albums and appearances, but I don't generally check for him.

But this album blew me away. I am a believer now. I never figured someone could create a triple-album, with few guest rappers, and have this high of quality from start to finish. There are really no skippers on here. I just got back from a 2-hour jog, listening only to this album, and didn't even finish it!

So here's my highlights for ya:

New Reality
Brilliantaire
Devotion to the Saints
The Elders Gave Us Aura
The Seer, the Poet
Think Priest (Good Thoughts)
Wubian Nation
Listen to Me

That was such a dope album, so much better than his commercial debut and one of my top 3 Curren$y projects (along with the Pilot Talks)

My other most played joint this year was probably King Remembered In Time. KRIT was another guy who stepped up from his disappointing major label debut and went back to his level of greatness he displayed before signing.

Kinda gave up on dude after a certain point, it was all sounding too similar. I will check this out though, I like Spitta, it was more that after a certain point it's just him remaking the same 2 or 3 songs over and over again.

But I won't argue with you on that point, he does have his "lane" that he sticks to, it's never been an issue for me though.

That said, this album has a little different sound to it production wise, and it's miles better and more "fun" than The Stoned Immaculate if you know what I mean. It doesn't sound anything like either of the Pilot Talk albums (which I LOVE). It's got bangers on it, but it's also got classic "Spitta" tracks on it. I just feel like it was one of the strongest releases of the year.

Its definitely not for everyone, but it really grew on me.

Cult Favorite is still AOTY...

but this Clipping joint might be second.

I also think more need to hear that Illogic/Blueprint joint. I forgot those dudes existed to be honest- but they make a perfect duo imo.

That Cult Favorite record was sorely overlooked. Great musics.

If you are looking into a Blockhead collab, Dour Candy with billy woods is dope and Elucid from CF is all over it. Bit of an acquired taste as far as MCing but those my folk. I fucks with it.

Definitely an easier, more consistent listen than History Will Absolve Me....but the highs are a lot higher on that album.

I totally get that its the "come down" or whatever.

I'd probably put it 3rd or 4th for the year.

So mine would go something like-

1. Cult Favorite (agreed that this has been overlooked...phenomenal album. Really, nothing else has been close to this. . .

2. Clipping- a real grower. In a wierd way, I look at this album as what Yeesuz could/should have been. If Ye had actual ball$ anyway...

3. Illogic/Blueprint- also slept on. As I said, forgot about these 2 but I think they make a great duo.

4. Woods- Dour Candy

5. Run the Jewels- truth be told, I was somewhat dissapointed by this album actually. My expectations were just too high I'm sure.

6. Quelle Chris, NIM- There are a few clunkers on this thing, but the highs hold up the album IMO. Very dope release, and I like Cavalier who is on basically every song.

That's all that stands out at the moment. Feel like I'm forgetting something though...

KRS-One - Never Forget - youtube only for right now, unless you went to his european tour. nothing classic, but every track is dope. i especially love "Never Forget," "They Are Taking Your Time," and "Are You Looking at This?"

Willie The Kid/Alchemist - Masterpiece Theatre EP - really love this EP. Worth the $5 I paid for it online. "Gettysburg" is especially dope. My only complaint is the annoying vocal samples on "Medusa."

Freddie Gibbs - ESGN - Freddie has a great ear for beats, and he's my pick for best gangsta rapper right now. didn't care for any of his crew tho, and "Lose Control" is a blatant attempt at radio. It reminds me of Mobb Deep's "Hey Luv." Dope beat, but the song content DOES NOT fit the album at all.

Fat Joe - Darkside 3 - I always liked Fat Joe when he wasn't trying to be commercial. "Your Honor" with Action Bronson, Produced by Premier has been on constant repeat with me. Cool & Dre, 9th Wonder, and Diamond D also provide Joe with some great backdrops before he does his 4 months.

Prodigy/Alchemist - Albert Einstein - Doper more so because of Alchemist's beats, but make no mistake that P sounds great, especially on tracks like "Stay Dope" and"Bear Trap," and "Bible Paper."

Billy Woods/Blockhead - Dour Candy - "Tumbleweeds" is one of the dopest songs I've heard all year. laughed at the lyrical references to Doom's fake shows. Underground, but still digestible. Definitely worth a listen if you haven't checked it out. "The Undercard," "Gilgamesh," "Central Park," or the aforementioned "Tumbleweeds" are all dope.

KA - The Night's Gambit - Kinda drumless, so boom bap fans may not like it, but man, KA has amazing lyrics. Even on the sparsest track, "Peace Akhi," I don't notice the sparseness because of his rhymes. "Off the Record" has such a dope video to match the song. "Our Father" is the only song I don't care for at all.
