"Acts that weren't huge that would make a good Biopic"
Tue Jul-30-13 09:59 PM by -DJ R-Tistic-

We all know TLC was huge, but for some reason, seeing their story randomly made me wonder...who are some artists who didn't really get big, or were moderately big but not as talked about, who's life stories and careers would probably make an interesting, even wild/crazy biopic?

I feel that some who weren't able to succeed in the industry would actually make great biopics, even if it had more of a tragic type of undertone or even ending.

TLC stands as the highest selling girl group of all time...they sold a shit load of albums and actually headlined arena tours...I know they are not iconic, but they were pretty big...

But I get where u r going with this....I have a few....

Bad Brains (pioneering black punk/hardcore heroes....they deserve to have their story told)

Sylvester (the original gay disco icon...that shit would be crazy...)

Milli Vanilli (like seriously...this needs to happen...there are rumblings its in the making, but they need to go hard with this...)

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

them not being big. But just that I wondered...what groups/artists who weren't big would still make for a good biopic?

Yeah...But I think it would be much better as a dramatic film.....I mean, that whole Sylvia Robinson/Sugar Hill Records story by itself is crazy...

yo James Ingram is as unsung as you can get that had huge records. he is a story and a half. just the politics he faced with PYT and Quincy Jones and the cat use to be a Pimp and was doing funk before Quincy had him stuffed in tux's.

James Mtume the stories he got and just behind "juicy fruit" and how that song 30 years later has made many a career.

Clifford Brown the baddest trumpet player this side of Miles Davis and he died right before the jump off.

Most of those acts u named are Unsung caliber acts whose stories need to be told...But not on the big screen...

Biopics need an interesting subject...

James had a great voice and wrote some good songs but there's no "story" there other than he wrote "PYT"....

James Mtume to me would work more on Unsung....

I can think of other jazz artists to do an actual film beyond Clifford, who was dope....

so i guess James Ingram being in Leyon Haywood's camp and in Ray Charles camp who was Quincy's Homie and then he lands in Q's camp, was part of big songs featured on Grammys and Oscar Nominated material and then of course working with MJ. and I ain;t even mentioned Ingram and the Michael Bolton music beef and story.

Billy Strayhorn would be a compelling Bio pic.

Wes Mongtogomery for starting so middle in his music career. and his impact and influence.

>the five stirsteps of course and to me the most musically talented family act ever and they from the CHI. they pre dated the J5. were signed to Curtis Mayfield's label.

went through so much industry politics they changed there band name.

had that one tight album they put out on George Harrison's label and the Five Stirsteps were working with Billy Preston.

they got a story for you.

Chico Debarge does as well i mean your Brother is Bobby and your other Brother is El. big hits and a successful family act and spin off careers and the drama in front and behind the scenes,etc.. you missed this one here Homie.

i read Tommy Debarge's book and that thing was not for the faint of heart and Chico's story ain't either.

i mean the family was on Dr Drew and it was heavy stuff.

Beyond Teena, Shuggie and Chuck, nah....

That doesn't take anything away from those acts u named....They deserve their shine.....But when I think of big screen (or even the small screen) music biopics, I don't think of James Ingram...I don't think anyone beyond yourself thinks of James in terms of a dramatic film...

I don't think of Chico...At all...Even with his drug issues and jail stint.....But I do think of the DeBarge family....THAT'S a biopic worth shooting...And Chico could be involved in that....But El is the real story....

The best music biopics work when there's a compelling story AND some semblance of good/great music or groundbreaking music/culture...

Teena Marie works because the white-girl-doing-R&B angle mixed with Rick James being her mentor makes for some riveting story telling...

Chuck Brown works because his story is bigger than Chuck Brown...It's the story of Go-Go music...That would be very interesting...

And Shuggie is on some mystery man shit....His background and personal struggles make for great copy...But more than that his music is interesting....So he works as well...

But those others (maybe Billy Strayhorn)? Nah...I'm good....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Richie Vallens had a story on him and it sold big time.

Man if you even make a name for yourself in that zoo called the music business that is a story worth talking about period IMO.

truth is you can make anybody big if you have the right lead actor and right film, etc...

I mean Jamie Foxx did wonders for his career after doing "Ray" and while Ray Charles is one of the mount Rushmore's of music ,when was the exact last time he was huge again?

i'm just saying right actor and right film and it can happen.

Larenz tate did that corny Bio pic on Frankie Lymon and it got green lighted.

actually i did hear a story that Will Smith was considering doing the Billy Strayhorn pic.

if you know about James Ingram then he would make a great story period. his is a true American dream. Married Father of 6 children in a jive hustle business. he found a way to make it happen. talent and hard work.

>Richie Vallens had a story on him and it sold big time.

Richie's story deserved to be told for obvious reasons....That's a bad example (dude was the FIRST Latino rock star....And one of the artists that died in probably the most famous rock-affiliated plane crash....come on man....Let's be serious....)

>Man if you even make a name for yourself in that zoo called

Richie? Yes...James Ingram? Nah....

>truth is you can make anybody big if you have the right

No...u can't...u need some semblance of a compelling story...Ray was compelling....Teena would be compelling; Chuck Brown would be compelling; Shuggie would be compelling; Sylvester, Sugar Hill Gang, Robert Johnson, ect....These are acts that have compelling back stories and music that went beyond "hits"...

Father MC? Man...u funny...lol

Again...the first superstar black teen idol who died drug addicted and broke and THEN had the issue of marrying three different women who were left to fight for his legacy/money? That's an interesting story...Richard Dimples Fields? Not so much...

>actually i did hear a story that Will Smith was considering
>doing the Billy Strayhorn pic.

Will won't do it...he scared...Billy being gay and all...

We are gonna have to disagree on James Ingram...lol...

I would rather see a biopic on Donnie Hathaway....

i ain't had no Problem with Richie's story being told except they got Lou Diamond Phillips in the lead role and that is still puzzling. 1)

Donny Hathaway wouldn't get a bio pic before Luther Vandross and you know this man. 2)

Will Smith did 6 degrees of seperation as his first break through film, so doing Billy Strayhorn role wouldn't affect him this late in his career at all 3)

Father MC had a duel role as a Artist and the Hailey Brothers and also Mary J Bliege were doing hooks on his material and he had a huge song. i mean he could be the Chubby Checker of his era if you will with how big "it takes two"

i could throw in Young MC as well because his story is even more compelling when you think about it. 4)

James Booker would be Compelling as well, he taught Harry Connick Jr alot of things on the Piano. he was a interesting figure in the New orleans music scene. 5)

Not being born in the states, the KMD period being dropped from the label losing his brother Subroc, being homeless, the Operation Doomsday period and gaining a large following. Sounds like a biopic to me. The Animated project would work too but that would be fictional obviously.

music history ever. I remember the rise and fall of KMD from the Gasface cameo to getting dropped by Elektra & Sub's mysterious death. I also remember the somber Source article that painted Zev as a depressed derelict. What prompted KMD's change in demeanor between the 1st & 2nd albums? What motivated his magical resurgence? The whole DOOM metaphor is obvious but somewhat under appreciated, I'd like to see him get more in-depth about that. Also there's a lot of crazy stuff has gone on since his resurgence...

They never sold 10 million records but BDP was a force in Hip Hop and KRS's story of being a homeless teenager to becoming a Hip Hop Icon is one of the best stories out there. Then you factor in Scott La Rock's murder, The self destruction movement and you have a great story that even non fans would love if delivered the right way.

he is very compelling and yet he won't ever talk and also ain't alot of interest in him like that sad to say.

his problem is that he didn't die when his peers did in Hendrix, Morrison and Joplin.

believe me had he, history would have him high as any act you can dare name.

and when he went away and stopped recording or his albums went wick wack, the interest waned.

Between the music and his wacky persona, the Byrdgang affiliation and subsequent beef, the classic blogs & the court case there's just so much to talk about. His story is just as interesting if not more than all these local drug kingpins. He was one of the best kept secrets in the industry, he didn't hit the mainstream as a soloist yet but a lot of people's favorite rappers were fans of his. So many different interviews you could get, so many different perspectives on what made him special and where he went wrong. Maybe they could even get some sober jail interviews with him going into detail about his upbringing and musical influences.
Honestly it's bound to happen at some point, I just hope it's a quality piece of work.

you wrong because dude had a huge cross over career. 73-75 he was big time. his songs been covered big time and its not like he was treated like Billy Stewart.

Barry White had a huge career. you ever seen the show Ally Mcbeal? that show was big and they used a whole lot of Barry White's music and he appeared on that show.

the man had a book and did other things, hardly unsung and hardly un mentioned. he had huge huge hits.

love's theme is a international song worldwide.

truth is in the Black Community he ain't usually mentioned with Marvin, Michael and Stevie. i put him their though.

Art Pepper-Anyone who read his stunning self-biography "Sraight life" knows that it would be one hell of a movie:Success, drugs, crime, prison-stints etc.

Henry Grimes. Semi-legendary jazz-bassist who just disappeared in the 60's and was believed to be dead only to be discovered decades later living in homeless shelters and completely clueless but has since started touring and recording again after not touching his instrument for decades. A "feel good" story.

Giusepe Logan-Kind of similar to Grimes except that this guy wasn't really a legend and is apparently insane so the movie would be quite sad but still...

GG Allin-Of course, there was a famous documentary about this maniac but a biopic would work as well

El Duce (leader of the mentors)-Kind of similar to Allin but his statements that Courtney paid him to kill Cobain combined with Duce being found dead shortly after said statements would give it an edge.

NME-Their guitarist/leader went insane and eventually gutted his own mother because he thought she had become a robot. Lots of other crazy shit as well with him-that's a story. Needless to say, the norwegian Black metal insanity surrounding Burzum and Mayhem in the early 90's as well as a rapper like Big Lurch would be similar disturbing freak-show movies.

Agree about Bobby Womack as well, that movie could be killer...

Maybe Nico? Teaching Iggy pop how to perform oral sex. Claimed the Black Panther party had a hit out on her. Had to hide from someone else who wanted to murder her over some convulated motive. Pretty big impact on women's fashion. Nazi fetish. Weird and interesting life.

Wesley Willis?

Lenny Breau?

Donny Hathaway?
