Oddisee has one full-length solo rap album, Kanye has 5

Oddisee has instrumental albums, Kanye doesn't

Kanye has an autotune pop album, Oddisee doesn't

Oddisee has produced full length albums for other rappers, Kanye hasn't

I could easily see someone thinking either one is the better overall artist...they are two of my favorite overall artist/rapper/producers along with El-P

>Oddisee has one full-length solo rap album, Kanye has 5

i defintley consider Foot In the Door as a solo rap album & a damn good one, especially w/ the full length tracks that u could DL w/ the code in the CD

plus 101/102 & Mental Liberation...then a classic album w/ Diamond District & another on the way

also he's been the cornerstone artist for two labels

>Oddisee has instrumental albums, Kanye doesn't

YUP, each w/ a different sound/stylistic shift & he promises a new progression on his upcoming one...which moves into my next point below

>Kanye has an autotune pop album, Oddisee doesn't

thank god!

but seriously, O's stylistic shifts seem more organic artistically & less forced responses to a commercial demand

i have this theory abt kanye not really making great albums but moreso projects that reflect the pop landscape of the moment & thus become "events" in the public eye

>Oddisee has produced full length albums for other rappers,
>Kanye hasn't

Be & Finding Forever?

>I could easily see someone thinking either one is the better

I haven't listened to them as much as some of the other Oddisee projects...Rock Creek Park, Travelling Man, Odd Seasons, People Hear What They See, Diamond District Instrumentals, and the Instrumental Mixtapes are the stuff i'm most familiar with/have listened to at least 5-10 times or more...I'll have to revisit Foot In The Door/Mental Liberation

>but seriously, O's stylistic shifts seem more organic

>i have this theory abt kanye not really making great albums

I think...Kanye's albums are intentionally reactive to the pop landscape and try to push it in a certain direction...but it has never come off as forced or insincere for any of his solo albums...even 808's was an autotune pop album yet sounded nothing like T-Pain or any other autotune R&B snap stuff at the time, it was its own thing. I do feel like parts of Cruel Summer and Watch The Throne sounded contrived and forced to keep up with the times (Trap and Dubstep sounds)

>Be & Finding Forever?

True, forgot about those...and those were dope, production wise at least. Diamond District beats probably better though

it's i think 9 full songs, 8 from jeff's mix (crazy that O had a legend like jeff mixtape--REAL mixtape--his first rap joint, but then again "the magnificent" is where O got his industry start)

one song is a joint ive never heard anywhere else w/ some atypical content imo for O, lol...a dope story joint about meeting a female while out on the town

i have the CD of instros too

but Kanye's discog is still better to me, So I have to say Kanye is more complete. So right now I can't roll with this post. And I don't like Yeezus

Oddisee is a better MC though, but I also think Oddisee's beats>>>his MCing, though the same can be said about Kanye

and Oddisee seems to be improving lyrically though while Ye just gets worse

to me most of the time. always good, rarely great.

I'd take Black Milk over him, and maybe have the Kanye conversation with him (not seriously, but for the purposes of this post).

O's work so far is a little restrained in the box he has for himself
Ye for all his issues...pushes himself and make an effort to cross not only genres but artis in those genres
I love O's music but would love to see him stretch his abilities in the same way as Ye

There is some soul/latin/house/jazz stuff going on in his instrumental projects, he's performed with a live band, has videos rapping over just and acoustic guitar...I guess most of the studio versions of his rap stuff stays pretty traditional, but the range of styles on the instrumental projects, use of live instruments for both studio and live performance...

This video has more class than 99.9% of anything any other rapper has to show for IMO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDOnQCtP10w

College Dropout - I actually liked a lot when it dropped but today, I can't even play it through. Still has some of my favorite Ye songs like Family Business but a lot of his rhymes are just cringe worthy on that album.

Late Registration - the idea of the album with Brion producing is better than the actual outcome. And I believe a lot of people took the fact that Brion was on board to create some kind of hip-hop masterpiece and bought into it regardless of what the album sounded like. With that said, there are still many moments that I like on the album but its just too bloated and too full of itself. And again, many of the lyrics are cringe worthy.

Graduation - his most contained album and probably his 'biggest' album. It had the hits but those hits are in a time capsule like a lot of his music. And the album did have Drunk and Hot Girls and Big Brother which are some what embarrassing.

808 and Heartbreaks - next

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - maybe the most overrated album of this current decade. I can't even make it past track 5. Another example of people being in love with the idea of Kanye's artistry more than the actual music.

Yeezus - I won't act like I even listened to this shit but reading reviews from people who champion Ye let me know this shit ain't better than either of those two albums I named.

I really wanna say people are letting blogs and critics tell them what's hot, but
people seem to really like it, so to each their own. It was the one of the most
overhyped pieces of shit ever until Jay-Z's Holy Fail.

As for Late Registration though, I thought that album was damn near flawless
outside of the corny joint with Brandy. His best album by far.

CD, LR, MBDTF are pretty solid albums 8-8.5/10 etc. I also think MBDTF is overrated but I still like that album more than anything Oddisee has done probably. Yeezus is shit. Graduation is kinda shit. 808s is unforgivably bad. Watch The Throne is also pretty shit. I think Kanye has the WORST and BEST of the two catalogs we are comparing here. I dig Diamond In The Ruff (and saw those dudes open for Kweli...that was amazing) and the recent Oddisee solo album....and dudes instrumental projects but I don't think I dig them as much as I dig those three Kanye albums overall. Right now Oddisee is definitely a better MC than Kanye though and seems to just keep on improving as Ye' just sucks it up (Yeezus), so theres that. They are both really good producers, though again lately Oddisee has probably been better at that too, becuase the beats on his last album were dope (so dope that they overshined his lyrics like fucking crazy). BUT comparing overall and looking at discogs and which albums I like more I just can't put Oddisee ahead of Kanye.

so yeah again I just disagree, but thats cool lol

> the

on PHWTS...i think the production being so relevatory, fresh & standing up so well on repeated listens, as well as the way the album is mixed, kind of lead to deemphasis of his rhymes but this guy consistently on the album shows a complexity & depth to what he's rhyming about that i think a lot of folks miss...each song has a specific subject too (i dunno if u read this but he actually went out & got inspiration for his rhymes by observing interactions from afar, which ties in w/ the album title)

i mean listen to the 1st verse of "way in, way out"...it's absolutely fucking jaw dropping, shit STILL gives me chills...

Kanye & his token CCA mentions can't even romotely approach even a sketch of that level of depth & analysis

& here's the thing...Kanye is ALL ABOUT HIMSELF in his music for the most part...for PHWTS O purposefully wrote each song from a perspective not necessarily (though he does drop jewels on his own life as any MC should) his own

also, no, im comparing him to kanye for a reason...kanye is a standard to a lot of folks so putting him up against kanye w/ the idea he's actually better is a means of me illustrating how seriously thorough O's discog is & how much he's accomplished in hip-hop over the last decade...it also serves as a reminder that an artists mainstream success does not define their success as an artist (& i bet O works very hard & makes a good living mainstream or not)

Sure they both rap and produce, but the lanes they occupy are essentially polar opposites.

I love the growth of Oddisee's music. I can appreciate the growth of Kanye's music. I think Kanye takes the most obvious sonic risks but it's not necessarily better because it's edgier.

And what I feel Oddisee does that I don't see Kanye doing is reaching back to all of his bag of tricks. Kanye seems content on finding "NEXT" versus perfecting all the tools in his vast arsenal. Oddisee can do all of what he does reasonably well for the rest of his career and it won't sound dull because you can tell he's committed to quality.

It seems like Kanye is committed to torturing himself into a creative.

There are certain people on this site, you being one of them, that make one-line statements that are ignorant and don't add to musical discussion and then when someone calls you on it, you respond with "you're mad".

Do you know how incredibly elementary that shit is? Youre the cat that stays instigating some shit and then when you finally get punched in the face, you want to cry about it and act like you're the victim.

There are plenty of people in this very post who have a different opinion than me that I didn't respond to because they expressed their opinion.

You just came on here and took a shot.

these are apple and oranges artists and the comparison isn't really valid IMO

thus the one liner. (admittedly i do take shots at phil but this was pretty tame historically speaking)

you say i'm an 'ignorant fuck' for my opinion. That was a display of anger...thus calling you mad. Ignorance doesn't apply to this discussion, there are no facts to correct each other on. Just subjective matters of taste.

Calling someone an ignorant fuck doesn't equate into one being mad and that's the assumption that needs to stop on these boards. It's like you guys see a cuss and think someone is mad. Do you know how calmly I can tell you to shut the fuck up and keep it moving? That shit is not a sign of someone being mad.

Ignorance doesn't

The ignorant common has nothing to do with anyone's opinion becuse anyone can like what they like. I called you an ignorant fuck because of the one-liner and the shot, which you even admitted are usually worse. I know certain people's MO on here and sometimes I feel like pulling your card on it.

it most certainly is. Of course it's not fool proof...but 9/10 said 'name-caller' usually feels some type of way. (ie. Mad)

This whole post is a shot at Kanye (and collateral to his fanbase). Oddisee is an underground rapper and they are generally of limits around these parts. Meanwhile, mainstream artists and fans of mainstream artists get shitted on all the time. A harmless return jab is not worth getting so defensive.

you could choose to look at it like this instead of viewing it as a "shot" to compare Kanye to a so called "underground" artist: phil's a huge Oddisee fan, the fact he'd even use kanye as a foil to get a discussion going is a credit to mr. west...

also im willing to bet there's significant overlap in the two artists fanbases

funny...i read an O interview one time & when asked what current artist he would like to work with, guess who he said?

I've explained this to Block before. This is a hip-hop board. This is like being at the park playing ball or in the barber shop. People fuck around and use certain language. That does not mean they're mad though. It just means they're telling it like it is. Like I said, I can tell you to shut the fuck up very calmly if the conversation calls for it and still be your boy because the conversation is not that serious. It's just a way of expressing oneself with passion. I could say "nah bro, I don't agree with that and I think you're wrong" or I could say "nah bro that's some fucking bullshit and you know it". The latter just more passionate and stresses the point. Not mad by any means.

If you felt this was a shot at Kanye, then by your own definition, you would be the one who got defensive by taking a shot at the original poster. That's why I respond to posts like your because I feel people are oblivious to their hypocrisy.

>I didn't know it was out on DVD already. respect. Enjoy your
>newborn...they are a handful arent they?

It's been on out DVD a d sitting on my iPad since it came out but I just never watched it. It was on VH1 so I decided I'd finally check it out. And yes the newborn (5 months) is a handful but I'd be lying if I didn't say my wife did the majority of the work. I just help out where I can.

the Seasons series is so much of a purer, clearer & better artistic statement

as stated many times already in the threads before, this is apples and oranges.

Kanye has been a bit more prolific in reaching the masses. Does this make him more talented? not necessarily, but if you have reached more people with your art and have made a larger impact on the masses then there is something to be said in the talent in THAT alone.

Oddisee is a far better photographer, that is for sure.

than my mommas? that's incredibly shortsighted and naive.

it's called marketing.

I like oddisee better but that's because I'm a hip hop head.

kanye don't make hip hop he makes pop records. if I think of kanye as hip hop I can't enjoy anything. I mean... he samples breaks from dillas records lol!

he makes good joints but he don't make hip hop sorry

What the fuck are you talking about. The first song I heard Kanye do, which was released BEFORE college dropout was through the wire. He released it on the ROC website under "artist" section for producer kanye west.

How the fuck is that song not Hip-Hop... let alone most of his catalog.

As far as your marketing argument, I was stating it also takes a certain amount of talent to put yourself in a position where you work is viewed or heard by the masses... assuming that is what you want. Having a knack for making interesting business decisions about how you are seen is part of an artists arsenal of talents.

"assuming that is what you want"

i'd submit that directing ur entire career to sustain longevity & a dedicated fanbase that will follow your next move, left turns & all, all while NOT chasing the masses may even be indicative of MORE talent & effort in that sense

agreed. That said, this is almost a hip-hop message board of very indie type hip-hop ilk.... and I have to say I'm surprised at how many people in thread don't know Oddisee's work.

But I hear ya. Look, I'm a fairly serious visual artist who struggles on the thin line of caring / catering to what people want and how to keep them interested without having to compromise my vision. There is no art without the critic.

Actually there is, except it's called art therapy.

Btw, all your points above are why I love oddisee, however, you can't say kanye hasn't made some very sound decisions in his career to make an impact. Right or Wrong, risks are sometimes the difference maker. Is Oddisee just playing it straight and safe.... perhaps

he was gonna break every rule of hip hop??

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1602383/kanye-west-hell-pose-naked-one-day.jhtml
you really arguing that he is not a "pop artist"???

people in here keep saying comparison is apples/oranges no???? why would two rapper/producers be apples and oranges if they both making hip hop

kanye follows a POP aesthetic. less so on college dropout... but increasingly so since then.

popular means popular. he raps and makes popular music. i didnt mean it as a slight. i feel the same way about grover washington. i can enjoy him but when people call his stuff jazz...you gotta kinda put an asterisk. AND i'm a fan. i really dig YEEZUS. but it aint hip hop man. ultramagnetic is hip hop. gang starr is hip hop. oddisee is hip hop. ye' dances around in the neighborhood from time to time

AGAIN...he SAMPLES directly from hip hop records for beats...in a similiar way mary j, jennifer lopez or mariah carey would. lol

If I had to choose 3 from there;

Ready To Rock
Way In Way Out
Set You Free

I think that shows his range pretty well within that album.

Definitely my favorite producer album last year.

Quality from track 1-12.

And in that respect, I understand. Oddisee is an incredible artist, so I'm happy to see people exposed to his work.

But as people have said, they're completely different artists. Bad comparison, aside from the fact that they both produce and rap.

there are many similarities imo

both came out around the same time, both built their foundation on a new millenium interpretation of sample/soul chopping, both clearly influenced & reared on classic boom bap....both "got on" by working on a legend's album, both have consciously "evolved" their sounds over the years & refused to stay stuck on one style...both from middle class backgrounds...both have a musical presence in Europe...both were, at one time, viwed as "everyman" type rappers...both had early content focused on chasing your dreams & giving up things for a rap career

i reslly think their paths kind of run parallel despite the difference in what kind of artists theyve evolved into

there's really no need to pit him up against someone else.
if his music is really that dope, it will float to the top on its own merits.

I see the appeal. I can see his fans feeling like this about Kanye. I for sure wouldn't agree, at least off six tracks, and I think that if I listen to his full projects, I'll feel that he's closer than what the average person would say, but...still wouldn't agree.

The main difference I see so far is personality. He's for sure more technical, just as a lot of rappers are. And it doesn't sound like it's straight rappity-rap...I can tell that he's actually telling stories and can connect. But I still don't think he has the personality that Kanye has, and doesn't at all have the same presence to me. Kanye probably says way more corny or even wack lines, I'm sure, but it's times he can grab me where it's like "damn...he's actually gettin off on this track"...mainly on his first few albums.

Production wise, I can tell Oddissee isn't as experimental as Ye, which isn't a good or bad thing, just something I would imagine. If there are tracks that don't sound like the rest of his material, y'all can point em out to me.

This post was basically bait to get some of us to listen, so I'd say it worked in that regard. And I still can't disagree about his full projects being better or more well-rounded, since I haven't heard them but have heard all of Kanye's. I'm no fan of "Yeezus" at aaaaaaaall though.
