"RIP Combat Jack Show"

They announced in their latest podcast that they are being picked up by Clear Channel. To me it's not a good look. They were better off independent.

As long as they stay on itunes, I'm good
however, all good things must come to an end. They been at it for a couple of years, given listeners classic all time interviews, and it's only fair they expanding and trying to get paid. This is America, ain't shit free out here.
They need to be on satellite radio at this point.

and it appears to be a free site, so I don't see the problem. Now that I think about it, I think Joe Rogan has a deal to be on Serius Radio, X-M, or whatever satellite radio station Opie and Anthony is on and they still operate their podcast as the normally do, so perhaps Combat Jack's deal will be in the same vein. I do wonder though why they didn't do the commercials other podcasts do. As long as this deal allows me to download their podcasts for listening on my own time, I don't have a problem with the deal.

Something else to factor into the recent differences is that they have less time to dedicate to the audio podcasts because they have to dedicate time to the Complex video interviews.

I'm not typing anything y'all don't already know but back when Combat Jack was on PNC and live, having local news discussions were necessary. It gave the show NY flavor. Nothing's done live now, including Benhameen's DJ sets. Since the shows are recorded, anything discussed as news is no longer new. With the success they want, the only stories that can be used now have to be internationally known. Still, they'd have to do the news segments and release them as quickly as possible.

Podcasts are meant to be played at any time, regardless of its original recorded date. Having news would date the recording. News on a syndicated podcast is like making a song about ending a musical trend that's several years old and placing said song on a major album release.

turning their backs on their true fans in less than 2 years. That's a good look imo. The show has been running for more than 2 years but I never heard anyone talking about it before that.
Look at the bright side, if they actually start bringing in revenue Dallas won't quit the show every few months. Plus the Complex interviews are actually getting better.

entertaining when it was just him, Combat and the guest. At this point he's taking up too much mic time with his foolishness.
The first time I remember him getting owned by a guest was the Rapgenius show. Since then he's also been given the business by Glen Friedman (the photog) & Toure.

On the Rap Genius episode, Dallas Penn clowned himself really because he wasn't able to fully articulate his beef with the Rap Genius crew while there where there. The Rap Genius people to their credit didn't really debate him too tough from what I remember; it was Combat Jack and Just Blaze that argued on behalf of Rap Genius against Dallas Penn.

and him taking that unnecessary shot at LL at the end of the podcast; outside of the tension between him and Jeezy, has he taken shots at other more famous rappers in the past? Curious if him being outspoken against other more famous artists is partly a reason why he isn't aligned with more famous peoples at this point.

I mean that was fairly egregious & you could tell Gibbs grew up on Cool J but was just shocked/disappointed by that Paisley record which I still refuse to hear.

Plus emotions were running high on the racial front in the wake of the Trayvon verdict a week before anyway.

He's dope but what can he give the mainstream audience that Bun B hasn't already? The thing that makes him special is his willingness to step outside the box, but I can't see how a major can capitalize off of that. Also I'm sure his fans dig the fact that he has balls. He should stay indie, he tried aligning himself with a famous rapper and that failed miserably.

I agree, the interviews are still good, but they definately don't just kick it and have the funny small talk without the guests that showed the chemistry the guys had. I'm hoping they have that female therapist they had a while ago to get that free flowing talking that brings the humor to the podcast.

They need to have more time for the crew to chop it up each episode. Maybe that will keep them from being so thirsty during the interviews.

this ain't the Howard Stern Show, these guys aren't that great at broadcasting where I would need to hear Dallas Penn & Premium Pete discuss shitting in public places for 25 minutes.

I also will only listen to the Ben Hameem mixes if I'm in a mood to hear music (not always the case when I'm in relaxed-listen-to-podcast talk mode) & in a place where I can crank the volume either on headphones, in the car or home.

The shows true appeal for me is the forum it gives rap artists in long-form interview format.

Complex short-form video webisodes on that game-show set, interviews with TV-cooking-show hosts or the artist who designs their Showbills, filler pre-guest time-killing small-talk?

i get the sense judging by the precisely consistent length of their podcasts since the move to nbc studios that they have a set time limit to occupy the space: i.e. 2 hours for combat and 1 each for the read and fan bros..so i think that they incorrectly made the decision to cut down on crew banter, news updates, etc. in order to focus on interview and music breaks

I've been a faithful listener since the Watch The Throne episode, but it's hit a steep decline once they began chasing spotlight

now it's just Combat Jack trying to be charged up and funny, and failing, along with his crew just going along for the ride

they had the perfect formula when Just Blaze was there and they would just sit around chopping it up before the interviews

I dont know if this new direction has been executive producer Chris Morrow's idea or what (he showed up out of thin air one day btw) but it's becoming the typical shit they used to be against. too much hype too fast

I'm gonna say something to them to try and save the shit. I really looked forward to each episode and that's starting to wane. Between them and 105.1 interviews I've been in heaven Cah cah *smh*. You are correct about Combat Jack not being funny really on his own. He needs Dallas there to lighten up the room and be a complete fool. Also Pete needs to get back to his foolishness. The last ep had them saying how they tried to curb certain things to open up to a wider audience and I fear those things will cost them in the long run.

He's only funny when he's taking a sly dig at someone.
They might be too high profile for the "No Shots" Combat to come back unfortunately.

In response to Reply # 0
Wed Aug-07-13 09:38 PM by bearfield

i don't even know if CJ intended for the show to be this way but that's the way i saw it. no one was really conducting in-depth interviews with some of the most important artists in rap history like CJ was. i always thought he was doing something meaningful by actually recording this stuff for future generations (and current historians)

then at some point it became "hey let's lob softball questions at *insert popular rapper here*" on camera for like 30 minutes instead of going really in-depth." CJ has no time for interesting questions anymore (b/c no one is going to watch raekwon talk about the writing process but they will watch action bronson talk about being a douche and being out of shape) and the whole show seems to be some long-term fantasy fulfillment for CJ even though i know it can't be that way since he's been so ingrained in the culture in such a deep way for so long. he just comes across as a fanboy in the complex interviews (see: his reaction to killer mike saying that he and el-p were doing shrooms during the making of r.a.p. music)

I'm listening to it now. In the beginning, Combat Jack addressed the fact the show doesn't have Matt Razz, the news clips, or the black/brown/or yellow games as much.

Big Daddy Kane and DMC were both good interviews. Other than that, though, since they switched to clear channel, they've had Pastor Troy (interview was eh), Just Blaze (that's just lazy) and an episode with no guests (uh? wasnt that the case with the Just Blaze episode).

BUT, other than the one week suspension of Dallas Penn I guess they haven't had to tone anything down, so yea, I'll take it.

I still think your boy Bombastic got mad homotional about the original post.

Episode came to a screeching halt and didn't recover til about 20 minutes later once Just called in. Kane seemed to check out for a minute there, plus they kept talking over him like they do EVERY guest they have.

the last CJ with Ecko started off with him shitting on juan epstein (not by name obviously) and now the new tagline is eff your podcast
feeling that pressure? that's what happens when you stop doing what made you great and try to switch up for the broader audience
I get it, everyone has a right to eat
but if you were picking up listeners when you were clowning, throwing "no shots" at all kinds of people, and asking questions no one else was asking, why change up now that you got clear channel and complex exposure?
I'm still a loyal listener but shit like the Charlamagne interview, the rhinestone belt buckle, the racist/sexist pete vs white toure, and the dallas "I quit" tantrums are few and far in between

During the Ecko joint didn't he throw a shout out to Juan Ep.

I still don't see how Juan Ep stepped their game up like Combat said, they still do the same nerd out shit.

Both shows are pretty different now.

I still listen to Combat but I fuck with Fan Bros more. And listened to that in a whim.

No Malice, Rick Ross, Ja Rule/Irv & Rap Radar have been especially good. The G Rap interview was quality too, as was Danny Brown's half an episode. I think things are getting dicey because they (Juan Ep & Combat Jack) are starting to book the same people as of late. Combat Jack tossed his Rap Radar ep in the vaults and I'm sure it had something to do with the Rap Radar Juan Ep that came out a week and a half earlier. Also Juan Ep is more enjoyable for me now because Cipha Sounds is stepping to the mic more, he's got real history with a lot of these artists.

and start putting up podcasts at a more frequent rate.

Rosenberg is the same overcompensating-making-it-about-him lame & Ciph is whatever.

But I listen because there's such a dearth of hip-hop interviewing content out there & Combat has been having people I couldn't give a fuck about.

The Ecko one was kinda cool but Breakfast Club had already done a half-short/twice-strong version of that interview by then.

Last great interview was Kane.

Also, I miss the dynamic of a room packed with all of the personalities.

This week's ep sounds like it's gonna be good. I'm only at the beginning.

I just watched that Daily Show ep, and had no idea that it was a little girl singing, "Santa Claus is a Black Man" or that it's Combat's wife.

There was a big controversy over someone's blog saying Santa was a black man.

Buckshot took issue with @oldmanebro's comments about Duck Down on Combat Jack. they went back and forth for a while. i only caught some of it. they may have deleted all that by now though.

It's the new episode with Duck Down. Buckshot is going IN! Calling Ebro half original and said he's the uncle mentioned in the 1-36.

Ebro name checked Sean Price months ago as one of the minor league rappers and he didn't take offense to it at all. Then Ebro name checked Duck Down as the embodiment of rap music that you don't get pussy to or something to that extent. You'd think Buckshot would be more diplomatic since he's one of the label heads. Was interesting to see him get so personal with the attacks against Ebro.

The minor leagues bullshit or Duck Down not getting pussy? I noticed he mostly laughed off the minor leagues thing and I didn't see anything on twitter with him getting back at Ebro in regards to not getting pussy.

Step up.

I just started giving all these other podcasts a try

Juan Epstein show is almost unlistenable...zero chemistry,
not much personality....they are pretty good dudes and
knowledgeable but....whoa

Combat Jack show has actual personalities...and the interviews
are worlds better because people let their hair down and are
just being themselves

Gosh me, you guys are nerds

Great back story in the first half. I had no idea that Scott's death was that big of a deal (I'm 25). But the second-half was absolutely amazing and inspirational. I'm looking to change careers and it was just a great blueprint of where curiosity and hard work can lead you, as well as forgetting your past accomplishments in down times until things turn around and your skills come back to serve you. Woke up in a terrible mood this morning, walked around listening to this and it absolutely changed my mood. Recommended to everyone

The D-Nice interview is easily a hands down classic, but the Finesse one wasn't far behind. Whoo Kid was wildly entertaining, even if you don't like the guy it's still worth a listen. Marley has brought so much to the game that it's easy to get a great interview out of him, just as long as you don't allow him to chew gum during the interview.

Yeah...like I said, that you heard HIM healing from the
shit.

The part about the dinner with KRS really got to me. Its
like KRS can't help but be profound...even when he's just
chilling, having dinner.

I think the thing that really gets me about these dudes is
that the fundamentals of their interaction are still the
same: the power structures, the intimidation, etc...age has
fixed a lot of it, but much of it remains in tact.

No disrespect, y'all really don't know about the crack
epidemic, how sad and bad shit was, and all the loss and
pain

And that's good. Stay with your selfies and all that,
its a testament to what real African Americans went
through...love is love

It not only built the music but it crafted a lot of shit
about society, these interviews really take you into the
Zeigeist of the times

(LOL @ a nigga like Chief Keef...nigga would last 40
seconds in the hood in the 80s...he can get away
with that shit in this era)

The details about how dude felt personally responsible
for Scott La Rocks' death? That death was pretty much the
most important moment in rap history pre Biggie/Tupac and more
tragic in a lot of ways since Scott was a regular peacemaking
dude...plus Scott was about to take over everything, had the
good heart and charisma

I was in the Bronx around that time as a little boy and
didn't know all these details...definitely didn't know how
KRS blamed D-Nice for the shit

And all the reconciliation and healing

That's grown man shit, a lot of y'all too little to even
know what death means

Story from a first hand account, with the girl phone calling buildup, the pistol-whipping he took as a terrified 16 year-old, the fight that exacerbated the shooting, Scott in the car bleeding, etc.

If memory serves my boy in Fishtown had kinda passed down the incident as kinda being D-Nice's fault to a degree as well but it wasn't until I heard him lay it out that I could really hear how heartbreaking that was to put on a good kid caught up in dumb shit that was purely a result of the cruel circumstances he was born into as a half-an-orphan trying to make it out of the fucking South Bronx in the halcyon days of the crack era.

Dude displays some of the same recovering PTSD scars that my boy who did two tours in Iraq is currently working thru by now working with returned young soldiers trying to get their mind right back here.

That was as real and therapeutic as I've heard a man in the interview.

I had heard all about KRS' account at the hospital, shit even Serch's story of that night at the hospital Id heard multiple times.

But I had no idea that their relationship had been icy ever since due to lack of communication and people coping with loss differently.

I love KRS but that was a tough listen but their dinner and his belated acknowledgment was great to hear.

D-Nice not being too deeply involved in production past '90 also explains why BDP's beat quality dipping dramatically from that late 80s prime.

Kenny & Kris could be minimalist to a fault (hence bragging about BDP coming to the stage and studio with 'the cheapest' on Edutainment.

I never knew D-Nice produced My Philosophy, Jack of Spades, Still #1 or that BDP actually jacked Marley Marls drum reel to kill the Juice Crew two years before.

All that was new to me.

As for the second half, I found that brutally honest journey from washed-up and 'old school at 22' to finding a life outside the finicky rap industry to all the way back to the music crescendoing with being in the White House getting dapped up by Michelle Obama.

That was informative, instructive and inspiring at the same time.

But that's me.

I was emotionally moved several times during the interview. From the early hardships, to Scott taking him under the wing, to him enjoying being down with the crew, to the tragedy of Scott's passing, to the early rap success, to the awkward relationship with KRS, to falling off, to reinventing himself multiple times and eventually getting an opportunity to DJ for the president.
Now I'll always wonder what would have became of Scott LaRock had he survived. What was his vision for BDP? Were they going to continue to expand? If so, was Kris going to bounce eventually? Did Scott have mogul type aspirations? What did he see in D-Nice when he took him under the wing? How many more young lives could Scott have turned around?

some kind of management company like Rush or Chris Lighty, he already had in-house production understudies like D-Nice and KRS was already assuming the frontman/mouthpiece role while expanding lyrically (tho the tenor of 'By All Means' might not have been as much of a 180 in terms of the subject matter from the first album had that tragedy not shaped them).

about D-Nice. I assumed he was projects middle class (basically meaning his parents could afford all the clothes he liked) pretty boy. Or one of those guys who got down with the crew because he was related to somebody.
Anyway Bomb ran it down (thankfully, I don't write nearly as well).

this is a story of a Black boy born in the S. If you think Combat is 1/10000000000000th as annoying as Rosenberg,
you are either white or are black dude who is super awkward with black
people, barely knows any.

Nobody black (a good chunk of white people too) can stand an hour of Rosenberg.
I mean, I REALLY LIKE him, his energy, his love for the game. But to black
people that shit is completely unlistenable. Every black dude you know with a good
job has an annoying co-worker who sounds and acts EXACTLY like him and
its...too much.

Trust me. I want to listen. I really do. And I DO listen. But I be having to
break it into pieces because he's too annoying.

If you think Combat is 1/1000000000000000000000000th
as annoying as Rosenberg, you are Caucasian.

No offense intended.

Its just true.

(mind you, lots of Caucasians feel the way I do. But
all the people who feel the way you do are Caucasian)

It's hard to believe you just stopped digging Combat's shtick all of a sudden. Sure they've been through their rough patches, but they're on fire now.

Whoo Kid was really one of the worst they've done

I dont like the commercials and reminding me to rate 5 stars on iTunes

9 times out of 10 I'll enjoy an interview, but Combat's self-hype gets to be a lot

and I'm a big fan of Face but come on.

It was about half as long, Face strummed a few guitar lines, said some non-specific things about his track record of deadbeat dadness & prison time.

That wasn't even a Top 20 Combat ep.

Now the Dame one was amazing, still the best ep for comedy they've ever done.

talking reckless and then starting/stopping again, switching stories in mid-stream or dumping topics altogether and leaving out crucial details (like the ones that would actually explain his culpability in the various issues he's had) while blaming his ex-wife, any/all people in the music industry, the court system, etc.

Him talking about his autistic son in LA, a kid he basically had no hand in raising into adulthood outside sending money, like he's a normal adult capable of making all his own decisions then sending shots at the kid's mom and her husband/the-boy's-adoptive-father was low-rent.

I love Scarface as an artist but that interview was not even really a good look for him let alone anywhere near the show's overall short list.

The interview didn't really take us thru his musical history, got sidetracked into him taking personal detours that he then would decline to discuss in detail, spent way too much time trying to play the right-handed axe to strum out 'Wish You Were Here' at Wyclef levels of dexterity due to being left-handed plus fucked-up and I don't know what the time constraints were but Combat could have tried to reel the session in a bit if they were pressed for time.

handled the topic left a really bad taste in my mouth.
I agree with a lot of what you said, overall that episode was disjointed, some really cool moments and some really uncomfortable/disturbing moments. There was too much pent up frustration and too little music discussion.

I liked dude's sense of humor, and that other voice was good

Very colorful character, which is good for these things

Its less of an issue when Combat has great guests

Dallas has made mediocre interviews turn good, though

And he makes the in between conversations and jokes outstanding

For example that Finger Guns-Foams shit never happens without
him

was just nonsensical and his suspension for the next ep was sorta the beginning of the end.

Even when they brought him back he started just coming in when he felt like it (and for eps with guests so strong he wasn't as necessary, while the days with Ty Dolla Sign or Anil Dash when he decides not to come in are the eps he could help out on).

Plus Pete has sorta slowed down on the clown stuff and concentrated on being the right-hand-man dependable guy with Dallas Penn in the wind.

They'll be alright overall, guess that Jean Grae joining the team lasted for about a week, Just Blaze has been scarce since Dame came thru and hurt his feelings.

It's ultimately a guest driven show and they're on a great run with that.

he's able to bring to the table. Most of the times you gotta let him ramble a bit to get his shit off. That means less time for the guests to talk. He doesn't really have many zingers, at least not anymore.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for whatever he's doing next. It would be cool if he tried his hand at sketch comedy, it seems like that could work for him.

or based on his limited time on the show that you've noticed as of late? Interesting he's backing away from the show now since they finally managed to get some adverts on the podcasts, which I'm assuming would mean they are finally going to get paid.

Its easier to say "you mad" and "you're a dick" when the person
isn't right.

Dame is right.

I mean, Funk Flex going off on another man about offending
Lyor Cohen is the exact spirit of Dame's crusade. Its like
Flex just walked into a giant Dame trap.

He's a funny and charismatic guy but there's a reason why he's crying on a podcast and not on an actual radio station. It's the same reason why every single artist Dame works with wants nothing to do with him.

Still, he does make for a great interview. I totally why guys like you who is too scared to talk to women looks up to him.

>Whats next? Finding out DC is corrupt?!?

From what I'm gauging, I don't think you (and a lot of
rap fans) are culturally equipped to understand this, and
I mean that with no disrespect (and like Dame said, its not
racial).

For example, black-on-black beef playing out and being
profited from is something you just have no connection to,
and aren't really passionate about, and that's true even if
you're a nice guy with good intentions. Its just music to
you.

99.99999% of rap fans know rapper beef, the individuals
involved, why they beef, etc. 0.00001% of these same fans
know much about executive beef, the names of the individuals
involved, what they've done to fuck each other and the artists,
etc. This is only a problem if you have a cultural connection
to the music, which you don't.

Plus, your pussy stinks, which doesn't help.

him & fool's gold doing this cam project is also really smart
its kinda of dumb for flex/ebro to say he's irrelevant when he's either on the pulse or ahead of the curve
ro$$ scooped up stalley
diddy ran after him, but ironically jay's roc nation aligned with jay electronica after he was dabbling with dame 1st

His take on independent thinking vs the 9-5 thinking is the stuff made of self help, motivational, entrepreneur seminar classic type material tho..

Didn't address the Beans thing, but his point kinda
stands that he'll address Beanie Sigel if he asks
him personally

And that he didn't have anything bad to say about
Curren$y kinda increased his credibility, because he
didn't sound bitter at all

He was consistent in his message that the problem was
not the rappers

That he ended up being right about Curren$y kind of
proves his point (Curren hasn't been the same since
he signed, and his album on the major is probably
not even in the top 10 Curren projects)

They talk bad about people they steal from all the
time.

Or find a competitor to go at the guy they stole
from so that they don't have to say anything.

That you don't know this or never thought to mention this
is exactly Dash's point.

You're not really smart enough nor close enough to the
culture to get this, and its not your fault. You were born
that way.

I'm happy to teach you about Hip-Hop culture.

Can't help you with the funky pussy problem, though.

he's talking about not agreeing with the s.carter deal
when he had a fucking deal with prokeds, lol
the same guy who marketed hidden drug pockets in his SP clothing line wants to now talk about corporations promoting negative imagery to black youth
k
then he always tries to skirt around the fact he stole money from some of his artists while simultaneously chastising the industry for doing the same thing
more and more it's seeming like he's just a dude who likes to hear himself talk
i get why ppl love his interviews though. it's a way for people to live vicariously though a person they think controls his own destiny
even though his journey has been a relative L and his track record of treating other black ppl in the industry is kind of putrid

Fact. Kinda like how you can't pee in a public restroom if you think there's a hipster in the stall.

It's nice that Cam and A-Trak are letting him dance in videos now though.

That's the anatomy of "I teach men how to become business
leaders." Its, like, what every great teacher wants to say
about their students.

I'm not saying he taught them, but you just did.

But I don't blame you -- you're a culture vulture, don't
know any better.

And you certainly don't know how to wash your pussy.

Combat is actually doing him a solid by making amends with the fact Dame treated him like shit but being the bigger man and moving on
does Dame have any other platforms to speak at this point? Props to CBJ for that
Dame is so oblivious to shit (or such a dick he just doesn't care) that he's talking about ebro getting checks and needing to format his agenda in such a way......on a podcast that signed a deal with clearchannel and changed their whole format to adhere to the corporate standard, smh
wonder if CBJ picked up on that

CBJ started a podcast completely on his own, with his
own money and friendships, used his connects to secure
hosts, etc

Ebro applied for a listed job at a multinational corporation,
was employed in a position that has been around forever

That doesn't make Ebro a BAD PERSON...apparently he's dope
at his job and GREAT FOR HIM...I sincerely mean that, and I'm
sure both Dame and CBJ feel the same

GOOD if Ebro is bringing more flavor to Hot97, a black perspective
and voice...I'm with that

But it is *different* than CBJ

Ebro has to answer directly to a board; he's not partners
with a board and shareholders. He is directly employed by
them. They aren't simply kicking in doe for a collaboration.
He is literally employed.

CBJ legitimately took a leap of faith with the show, on his
own dime, with his own time, and it worked

Of course CBJ is going to strategically partner up with people
with money, but not at the sake of his independence...even
Dame has partnered with big companies before....you're smart
enough to know what Dame is saying...its not a totalitarian
"don't work with anyone" stance, he's smarter than that and so
are you

and i seriously doubt he "applied for the job" thru a listing (wtf)
he was recruited after his buzz started popping.....just like CBJ was

u can nitpick over how they got there if you want i guess, end of the day they reached the same destination and serve the same master
CBJ himself EXPLICITLY said he was changing the way he did things in order to please his corporate overseer, because he wanted that check
it's nice that he can do that while giving yall interviews yall care about (for now) but it don't get more point blank than that

LOL..wrong

Ebro was recruited and brought over: Hot97 didn't enter
into a collaborative agreement with Ebro's independent
outfit

They didn't give him cash to co-promote the product he
was already producing. They employed him so that he could
promote their product

This is not a debate, you're wrong and you know it

You're just mad for some reason, probably because you're
mad I exposed your fake boxing career...let it go, I actually
like you a lot, would love to grab a beer with you sometime,
seriously

which is owned by clear channel
clearchannel owns and monitors all their content.
in a way this is actually worse then being a program director because these cats literally sold out an independent movement that was gaining stream and influence
so you're right in some ways this is different than ebro
