"1 year since Life Is Good...We can all agree it's a classic right?"

Just before Magna Carta dropped, I needed something to hold me over while I waited because Yeezus wasn't good enough to even make it into the whip. I wanted some summer albums so I went back and listened to RE:RPM's (very underrated) and then Life Is Good. Besides Summer on Smash, nothing else is really skip-worthy, and its definitely got its share of standouts. Without question it's Nas' best since Stillmatic, so at minimum its in his top 4, maybe top 3. That shit is just such a refreshing album to listen to, especially these days when good rap albums are way too few and far between. In mind, it's a classic. Seriously, I'm trying to think of 5 albums that have been released in the last 5 years that are better, and I can't do it.

Nas' only saving grace in the Lesson is the fact
that Jay Z keeps putting out terrible music

(I like MCHG, but its like 1/1000000th as good as LIG
and overall pretty bad)

the OP said it was classic.
a number of people said it was a classic when it dropped.

tell me, how does "the lesson" feel about the new kanye album?
there are at least 3 platinum posts full of people disagreeing.

actually, we can't even agree on what kanye's best album is.
college dropout?
MBDTF?
graduation?

there is no lesson consensus on anything.
you really kill me with this.

First few listens I came away feeling it was very average, but the more I listened to it it grew on me. It's actually pretty good, but it's not outstanding in any way. Solid but unspectacular. MCHG is kinda like Josh Smith or Andre Iguodala, does a lot of things well, some areas stronger than others, but nothing really great.

And you're right, it's nowhere near as good as LIG. But I don't see what Jay has to do with LIG being good or not.

I'll let other decide if its a classic but for me it has the ability to be my second favorite Nas album. I still have It Was Written there but there's something about this one that I love and I can see it moving up as time goes by.

Back When and Stay are essential Nas songs.

Loco-Motive, Daughters, You Wouldn't Understand, The Don, Cherry Wine, Bye Baby, Nasty, The Black Bond, Roses, and Where's The Love (that second verse is unreal) are ALL great songs.

everytime Nas drops something new i hope its great

everytime, for the most part, i hear an album that sounds good out the gate but has little replay value or staying power

that said, i dont really think Nas makes music for me, i think he wants his art to appeal to a different market of rap fans and, im being totally truthful when i say this, that is absolutely fine & totally understandable

It's a great album, and it will stand the test of time. Great lyrics, great writing, and great songs with mostly timeless sounding beats.....that's the type of album that will hold up.

I haven't listened to it in almost a year but Nas was stellar on it (I didn't like the features really and some of the production wasn't enough to match what Nas did to them)

I'm not sure I'd go as far to say it "destroys" AG though.

I like Life Is Good, a lot. But Stillmatic is a 5-mic record to me, with plenty of 5-mic songs: "Ether," "Got Ur Self A...," "One Mic," "2nd Childhood," "What Goes Around" are all potential Top 10-20 Nas songs to me. I don't think Life Is Good measures up to that. It's still a great record though, I love it.

'Stillmatic' is important in that it represents a recharge of Nas' career, but I've always found it's quality too hit-and-miss to consider it classic. It has some great records, but it also has it's share of snoozers and weak joints. He was still washing off the musical stink of 'Nastradamus' and some of of 'I Am'.

It's a dope album - I was saying it had the potential to be his best when it came out. I think the initial reaction I had died down a bit since, but I do see it as more mature and personal than Illmatic or IWW, which are probably better.

I'd probably give it classic status but besides Stay, Back When, & Loco-Motive - most of the other songs come off as really good not great - Summer on Smash still trash.

No. It's not a classic. Classics don't really happen anymore.

good album. But Nas fans will tell you I Am wasn't that bad, IWW > Illmatic and Stillmatic deserved that 5 so given that type of wayward thinking i'm not surprised by this question.

In response to Reply # 0

...when the musical landscape had changed tremendously; to the point where the album that's considered classic has a sound that is no longer popular or relevant, yet somehow, it withstood the test of time. Nowadays, you niggas won't let an album get the chance to age before being ready to deem it classic. Man, it's been a year. Today's music hasn't changed that much since then nor has the album aged long enough in order to see if it still holds up. I don't know why cats nowadays have such an itch to call any album they really like a classic while it's still being listened to with fresh ears.

You've never heard an album and just knew it was classic material?

The only way something can be deemed classic is if it passes the test of time?

I think it's a great album that still sounds just as great a year later, and it's an even bigger achievement considering where Nas is at in his career. I also think it's one of his best-produced albums, period. But I'm not sure that it has enough classic songs that will end up in the classic hip-hop cannon. On the other hand, down the line, I can see this being the blueprint for a mature rap album that Kingdom Come tried and failed at.

Guess we'll still have to wait and see. But I do think it'll still be good years down the line. We'll see if it has classic impact.

In response to Reply # 0

The fact that 'Life Is Good' came out 18 years after' 'Illmatic' and 21 years after 'Live From The BBQ' is incredible to me. Consider other emcees at similar points in their careers:

LL was on '10' - remember that one?
Rakim was preparing 'The Seventh Seal'
BDK was M.I.A. For the best part of a decade
KRS just made 'Keep Right' (that album's actually pretty dope, but not in the same league as L.I.G.)
G Rap was on 'Half A Klip'
Etc...

In a genre where longevity is practically unheard of, for Nas to still be making such dope music that reaches a wide audience is beautiful to witness. Alongside Jay, Com and the Wu, I feel like Nas is challenging the usual conventions of what a career in HipHop looks and sounds like.

Is it a classic album, though? It's a personal classic to me and that's all I really care about.

So Thought produces now?

And Nas doesn't even have that many features on his albums. Rick Ross is the only MC and then he has people singing hook.

Thought has people doing hooks and an average of 2 guests on each song on his past couple albums reducing his workload to 1 verse per song in most cases while Nas is doing 3.

Also, it seems pretty clear that Thought has others (?uest included) lending ideas to the overall theme a d content in which their albums and songs are going to cover.

How is that even? Unless you fucking suck at math.

And I say this with Thought securely at my number 2 spot.

im just sayin, Nas is a great but i think its revisionist or stanleyish to claim his music (not that he's not a top MC of all times) is great bc he's still putting out decent albums

with a better ratio of quality songs.

It is in the 'grown man rap' mold but so is 'Life Is Good' actually (at least when it's at its best with Loco-Motive, Daughters, Cherry Wine, Bye Baby, etc.

Difference being Tip in addition to being a rapper is a producer/DJ/musician so he was able to make something that fit where he was at without a wack Swizz song or a Rick Ross feature with a cringeworthy hook.

I like Life Is Good a lot, The Renaissance is better tho.

I guess I was thinking solo emcees rather than those from groups, but Tip, Thought and Big Boi now I think of it, have all made great albums deep into their careers. I wonder if being part of a group where you often contribute 1 verse per track rather than 2 or 3 helps avoid creative burnout?

I sort of see your point if you're saying that a guy that records more may run out of steam fast, but look at Tip's body of work as an artist overall
he gives anybody you can name a run for their money, and if anything he surpasses Nas in quality control (he doesn't just release anything and takes his time with his work)

Well there's that and the fact that a guy who records less could just
be saving material and releasing later. Some call it quality control,
others call it laziness. At any rate, I think maintaining the "ill spitter"
status while constantly putting out music is much more of a feat than
doing so while only putting music out every 5 or 10 years. To me, that
just looks like a person doesn't have it in them to be consistently nice.

Doing full projects, 3 verses a song consistently and still staying at the forefront

Mustering the creativity to do a verse a year isn't the same as doing 40 verses
for an album. *shrugs*

that's the difference between being passionate and being lazy, quality control and putting out music to have your name out there some kind of way

But you're in here working hard to skirt the comparison of two late-career rap albums which I'll take as a tacit acknowledgement that The Renaissance was better to you as well so we're good.....glad we can agree to agree. peace.

Meh. Thriller was pretty early on. When you look at "Bad" being MJ's
3rd real solo record and "LoveSexy" being Prince's 10th, I think it
starts to make a difference then.

MJ had been recording for 15 years (including five solo albums) by Thriller but not to get bogged down in that, I just meant in terms of release ratio during that time period.

As for MJ's post-'Bad' & Prince from'Lovesexy' on, let's just say both were genius-in-decline scenarios.

Which is why I said 3rd *real* solo, because people were handing him
songs on those motown joints.

True, but to still be churning out hits 10 albums in is different from
doing it 4 albums in.

years of all those emcees you listed. Hip hop is much more mature and the game has changed to where just because a rapper gets old he loses his place in the game or his audience and becomes irrelevant. It's much easier for a good rapper to maintain relevancy now because the fan base is much larger and more established, and they won't bail on the artist for a younger act, rather they grow along with the artists and contimue to support good music. I see no reason why guys like Nas and Jay & the Roots, etc, etc, etc won't keep performing and making quality music well into old age.

that album was mediocre AT BEST. fell outta the rotation after 2 weeks. 3 or 4 good tracks, and the rest was garbage to me. The Lost Tapes is 50 times better than this, *right today!*

music standards have fallen to an all time low if this bullshit is even under consideration for classic status.

While LIG wasn't quite a "masterpiece" IMO, it is one of his best albums.

99.9 % of heads will agree that summer on trash is dogshit (there's always that one contrarian)
mamacita, pollywanacracka, and jigga have their defenders and fans,
hence no consensus. In fact those 3 are like "maybe, maybe not, maybe go fuck yourself" type tracks.
We can play this game all day but my point stands: classic albums don't have hot garbage songs on em

but it's definitely Nas' 3rd or 4th best album and has got a ton of replay value for me. The only songs ionn really fuck with are Daughters (corn) and Summer on Smash.

The biggest takeaway from the album for me, was that Nas is still SPITTING HIS ASS OFF on his 11th solo studio album. This might sound crazy but I think he sounded the sharpest he has lyrically since Lost Tapes (which was all material from 98-99).

I'm gonna go ahead and make the obvious comparison: Nas' rapping on Life Is Good BODIES Jay's rapping on Magna Carta. I'm talking San Fran 55 - Denver 10 in Superbowl 24 type bodying. Nas' spitting on a track like Black Bond, which didn't even make the album proper, just destroys whatever you think Jay's best verse was on Magna Carta. Jay tried to make grown up rap and got lost, and failed pretty convincingly. Nas made songs like You Wouldn't Understand, Back When, Bye Baby, Stay, Cherry Wine which are all some of the best material he's put out.

Here's how I would've executive produced that joint:

1 Nasty
2 Back When
3 The Don
4 Queens Story
5 Accidental Murderers (featuring Scarface)
6 The Black Bond
7 Roses
8 Daughters
9 Loco-Motive (featuring Large Professor)
10 Where's The Love
11 You Wouldn't Understand (featuring AZ)
12 Cherry Wine (featuring Amy Winehouse)
13 Stay
14 Bye Baby

Honestly, that shit isn't classic right there? And yea, I would've made him change "accident" to "accidental".

Since we're editing features, lets throw Reach Out back on there but take off Mary J's whole shit. Nas was spitting too tough on that track to just lose it all.

Also, am I the only one who just can't stand Daughters? This coming from a guy who has a young daughter lol. I just felt like it was a cool idea but poorly executed.

Nas did kill Reach Out and I actually don't dislike the middle of the album (6-8) but I do know those 3 tracks are weaker joints and I also just feel like Reach Out doesn't fit musically. If he spit those verse over a different beat I'd be all for it.

I love Daughters. That beat, the vibe, the concept. Just a dope hip-hop song.

Nas has two classics...his first two albums. The are flawless.

If you wanna count Lost Tapes...three classic.

He has one turd...We all know it.

He has aight joint...I am.

He has a couple good joints...Untitled and Hip Hop is Dead

The remaining I all consider great, especially Street's Disciple.

I swear, y'all don't even care if a song is quality or not if it even "sounds" like a song you can have fun to you'll hate.

That "Anything" joint off the Kingdom Come album was dope. But it sounds too fun.

That is one of the worst songs I've ever heard.

For me, Life Is Good is an amazing album. Can't believe an 18-year vet came that good. But That song, man...that song.

Is it good? Nah
Would I have cut it? Yes

But the only thing bad about the song is Swizz on the hook.

The beat is one of Swizzs better joints and the string sample is dope.
Nas kills the verses.
Miguel can sing.

And I've said it before...if you rocked that song on the beach or by the pool, it brings you back to that setting every time and to me, that setting is a good thing.

I'm sure Brotha Sun thinks its the best song on the album which it's not and is actually the worst song on there but to act like its the worst song of all time is crazy.

If that's the case, then I can come up with a long list of Jay songs that needs that title as well.

But I believe the case is people having the mind set that a commercial Nas song = piece of shit no matter what.

And the song is not fuckig awful. It's a regular ass commercial attempt no worse than shit that gets praised by other artists.

Not sure where you come from but that would be wildly inaccurate.

I know you probably don't have much human interaction but try to pretend this is real life for a second.

I'm talking to someone about music.

You stick your head into the conversation and state your opinion when no one gives a fuck.

I look at you with the side eye and say "no one gives a fuck about what you think, keep it moving, grown folks are talking."

You keep saying dumb shit.

At what point does that equate into me being mad or crying?

Not that serious my man.

Song is not good but I can think of many worse and even worse songs in Nas' catalogue. Not praising the song by any means because as you can see above, I cut it from my list.

That's all there is to this conversation.

I'll give it that

Nas usually has at least one song I don't care for per album tho aside Illmatic and Lost Tapes

Still I'd take Nas Is Coming over Summer on Smash but it is also better than Big Things, Makings of a Perfect Bitch and a number of other Nas album tracks imo.

That's all I'm saying.

Big Girl is his worst track ever!

Summer On Smash isn't good but that shit isn't that bad.

Nas still goes in on the verses and the beat is dope to me.

I just hate the hook and Swizz really.

Braveheart Party is worse
I Am has a few worse tracks
Nastradamus has a few others

Nas Is Coming is better but I would say Summer On Smash is on that level.

I won't skip it when I'm listening to the album.

You will NEVER catch me listening to Big Girl or Braveheart Party.

as being some sort of low point

Does it have an annoying chorus? Yes.

Is literally everything else about the song incredible? Yes. (Other than the Nas/Dre convo lol)

Nas rapes that song. He was in a zone for that entire album, that song is no exception. And the beat is good too, it's not like a cream of the crop Dre beat but it's better than any joint on that Aftermath compilation that he dropped around that same time.

Been re-listening to the album since this thread went up, and those three songs stick out like a sore thumb. I've come to enjoy "Reach Out," but those other three still reek. Not bad enough to derail the album, but bad.

I'm honestly not sure if that three song stretch means that the album isn't classic to me. It's certainly problematic, but much of the rest is really, really fucking good.

170. "Great vs. Classic"
In response to Reply # 0

This seems to be the real question. Most will agree it is a great album. But when you say "classic" it brings out the fight in people.. How will it be remembered 5 years from now? We don't know yet.

For me, 1 year later, it is my second favourite Nas album and I think of it as his album where he finally satisfied the large majority of hip hop fans. Even Nas haters found it hard to hate. I think it will go down in history as his "return to form" album and it MAY also be remembered for being an album that didn't fit the existing mold of present day hip hop but still garnered great reviews and was well received by fans. If nothing else, it definitely re-enforced his position as one of, if not the best to ever do it. He's back on top right now as far as the respect he's getting for this album.
