"Why are we supposed to hate Maclemore again?"

I haven, but 't explored his work, but most of what I've heard has been passable-to-good. So why do we hate him, again?

I hate him because he put out song with someone impersonating NAte dogg

Then he put out a song with someone impersonating John Legend...

And Yes... The Haircut....

He's not 100% my style by any means but my 4 month old son absolutely loves Can't Hold Us so I am forever in debt to Macklemore for ending many crying episodes.

I took him as a joke wih Thrift Shop but I understood what he was doing and respected it. I just didn't like the song.

But Can't Hold Us and Same Love are legit and I appreciate him for taking on different topics. I got the album as a Father's Day gift and there are good songs on there to me that I can rock with. Ten Thousand Hours, Can't Hold Us, Same Love, Make The Money (my favorite), Neon Cathedrals, Jimmy Iovine, Wings, A Wake, and Starting Over are all quality.

Like I said, definitely not my style and if I wasn't attached to it through my son I probably wouldn't have copped it but I do appreciate his focus and his willingness to take on topics.

I do wish Wings was a lot less dramatic. He should've done that over a Primo beat. That would be dope.

My favorite group growing up was Kast because I loved how progressive they were.

Reason I don't like most commercial rap is usually 1 of 2 reasons (or both);
1 the beat sound extra synth and cheap
2 lyrics are beyond ignorant

I just can't rock to that shit.

6. "This is The Lesson. "
In response to Reply # 0

- The Lesson (white lessonheads especially) hates the wrong
kind of white rapper. He's not the right kind. Too happy-go
lucky. Too positive. No gimmicks, no teenage angst. The Lesson
liked Kreayshawn, the Def Juxish ones and Mac Miller types.
This is a pure demographic selection: most Lessonheads are
frustrated, mad types....Macklemore is off-putting to them.

-The marriage song was "preachy." The Lesson likes Harlem
rappers who bite Houston rappers. The only rapper who is
allowed to openly talk about issues is Lil B because he's
"pushing the boundaries and expanding."

- He has sold a LOT of fucking records, all on his own,
no hype or gimmicks. Just because people like dude's music.
Again: The Lesson likes Kreayshawn and Harlem rappers who
bite Houston style. And Lil B, even though most Lessonheads
listen to Lil B on mute.

- He can actually rap. He's no Nas, but he can put together
an adequate verse, unlike Wiz Khalifah and these other rappers
that the Lesson likes.

that have sold a shitload of albums.

consider how many people here big up kanye, prince, rick james, michael jackson,
stevie wonder, jay z, nas, the beatles, beyonce, anything associated with motown...

i mean, damn.
don't you have a post up right now with people praising ghostface?

... don't own any of his stuff but I dig SOME of the songs I've heard. He's different and quite frankly I respect dude, check the back of the album, no labels, just him and the producer guy getting it in. This is what Drake SHOULD have been, instead we had wool over the eyes for that one and it obviously shows with the 20 label logos on the back of his albums.

nor am I..but he caught my attention for being unique. His subject matter alone gets much respect, and his delivery is confident. Like most, he isn't trying to be someone he's not. His SNL performance was high octane and worthy enough for further investigation into his catalogue.

(I haven't heard his album, just the singles & they're not terrible.)

Jake One & DJ Hyphen are probably the only hip hop dudes I fux w/ outta Seattle but I hear they have a vibrant movement out there.

better than french montana, mainly because he's not stealing his thoughts and concepts from other, more popular rappers.

Thrift Shop is a fun song and I love how it bumps...if you got the right speakers. That other big song they have is fun as well. I bought "The Heist" and he got some really good songs on there. And dude can rap. I don't get the hate at all.
Is his album in the same lane as a Killer Mike/El-P collabo? Nope, but does it have to be to be enjoyable? I bought Killer Mike, Talib Kweli, and Macklemore all on the same day and they stay in steady rotation based on whatever mood I'm in. If the golden era could have a Dana Dane, N.W.A., & P.E. (all different artists) then Macklemore definitely can fit in today's hip hop.
What I want to see is if Macklemore & Ryan Lewis can duplicate their success on the next album.

the reaction that people had when he came out- "oh this is a breath of fresh air for hip-hop" or "he's rapping about positive stuff!!!" like he was the first to do it.

He's okay, but he's nothing special as the media and people who never really listened to hip hop before him would suggest
