Absolutely KILLED them vocal chops!!!

Love how you laid down a whole new melody from somethin as basic as that -
Thats a highly favored technique to me and somethin I respect MUCH since I know how hard it can be...

From jump, melody seemed kinda joyful, happy, whatever... but THEN the thick synth bass dropped -
Amazin what a two note bottom can do!!!

Gotta mention the presence of the drums as well - kick was PHAT and the snare came nicely thru too -
Been workin on your mix as of lately... Dig that!

Lyrics always refreshin - "...Got styles for days..." - true dat true dat!!!

Dope beat. I love how you edited the vocal (?) sample to for the main line. Very cool. Warbly. I can't tell what it is at all. Vocal or instrument or keyboard. Bass is very tight as well.

chops are on point like crazy.
rhymes are tight.
and the mixing/EQing is all balances but still retains ur grimy style.
excellent way to start us off.

Okay..i chopped up five parts of song, but i pasted them together into two long parts... Next i created two samplers for each part so i could play them on the keyboard...then i played the samples in a sequence i made up for the first part...i played the drums and added a bassline which i played also..i also added a drum fill at the end of the last bar from a old record......

the second part of the beat was where i wanted a different sound but tried to keep in the same realm...lol...

the second part of the sample(s) was used here along with some from the first part....i used slightly different drums and went to the Thor keybord for the low end sound. I also used some synth sounds from the thor. I also used a percussion loop from an african cd. I added some scratches and sequenced it down...

I always feel naked if my shit dont have some kind of vocals or something so i added the vocal shit at the end...

2piece suit(e) always a good thing... diversity RULES when combined with skills!

Part 1:

One of them simple chops thatll basically hold a whole song by itself because of the "richness" of the chords, instruments combined, atmosphere etc. -
Great find and the way you used it def. did it justice!

Drums wasnt too loud nor too lo - sittin somewhere in between just nicely, toms was a nice touch -
I wish you wouldve had the kick and the snare mimic the swing of the hi hats but thats minor really...

Bass raw - soundin real lopitch to the point where it almost sounds stretched, but it hit the way it should!

Def. a DOPE starter!!!

Part 2:

Had the reggaetonish rhythm which somewhat threw me off, but hey - still dope and I can appreciate a solid switch up!!!

The echoey lo end at the loopstart does hit a different vibe than what the chops dictate -
Doesnt take away from the sound of the REAL star tho - strings and piano still be soundin BEAUTIFUL!!!

Lastly, the sinuswave scratch adds crazee atmosphere - always dope but sadly, very rare in these times...
No matter, makes your beat stand out from the bunch in a good way!

All in all, great effin job!!!

I'm loving the chops on this. I really dig the second section as well. Love the scratching. Dope beat.

You got the drums banging and the bass fits as well. The transition to your 2nd beat is great too.

The only thing I'm not feeling that much is the snare roll sample. I think it sounds too different from the drum sounds you used and by balancing it way right it stands apart even more. Maybe you could've taken the sample as a blueprint and re-created it yourself (making it a part of your drum programming). For the 2nd beat, I would've left it out altogether, I don't think it's needed there and almost gets in the way of what you got going on there.

I like how u took bits of the vocal samples and rearranged.

Only critique is the drum roll sounds off a bit, but I'm feeling the bass and drums overall.

The beat is airy and I like that.

The change up was VERY welcome.

This is good man!

Put the portion of the song I took something from(actually just the 1 piano chord) at the beginning for a reference.

Slowed the piano chord down.
Played 4 bars straight, pitched the other 4 bars down(or up. cant remember now)
put some others items on it and shipped it out to the cloud...

to make it dope. I could hear one of the following 3 rappers rhyming on this and it being some fresh shit where somebody would want to keep hearing the song a bunch of times (in no order):

1. danny brown
2. kool keith
3. del the funky

as a stand alone beat i like how u chopped the sounds and kept it undrgrnd hiphop. but if one of them 3 rappers spit on it-- i could hear any one of them busting on this and taking to that level. has to be that caliber of mc with that caliber of rhyme skills to make that bitch what it could become. but i can hear it crystal clear in my head

You caught the 90s aestethic spot on with this here...

Sound of the piano alone is enuff to make my day - DAYUM beautiful!!!

Drums was dusty just the way they should and complimented the main line real good...

What really created a wholeness tho, at least to me, was the plucked (synth) bass layer!!!
That shhh hit home...

Yep, the title "Disco Bliss" is kinda ironic, unless that disco is located in some stanky, grimy-ass dungeon. Like it a lot!

In my view, you could make the beat even hotter if you'd play with the sequencing. 4 bars of this, 4 bars of that is a bit predictable as the beat goes along. If you left everything as it is and just did it 4-2-4-4-2 or whatever, it'd be even doper, I think.

HA! LOL
I was actually referencing the sample source on the disco part and referencing what I did with it on the Bliss part.
Not really a disco fan but I made it blissful

In response to Reply # 18

this is one of the most ambitious chops u've came with the way u have this sequenced together.

the 1st joint , (it all) ends, had me wishing Guru was still around and would've recorded something for this. r.i.p. -- dope shit. took me like 8 listens to realize this didn't have any hi hats.

80s cruisin reminded me of some hi tek.

dream sequence is a lush slice of melancholly , and i like how it faded out, and into

this early 00's busta rhymes sounding ass party beat also known as bad man business! lol.

young love against the word is that flavor. u filteredthefuckoutofthesampleonthisone. i dont know where u got that Horn sounding sample to sound so fresh that comes in around 2:41, but that's a dope cut for real.

taste of freedom and dream sequence run together so ill

run faster is kind of bugged out with how that little warbly ass synth sounding sample is underneath the beat. lol

then at 4:11 thats a classic waiting to happen.

the morning after was like leaving on a bright note.. sounded kind of positive and bright.

i really like the way you put your chop together this time. it was entertaining and dope the whole way thru.

the only thing u shoulda done was make your joint downloable for the folks who still like to burn shit to cd and have new shit to turn up to in the car.

and damn. that DAVE From the D joint just came on... and THAT shit is the joint!

...to listen, reflect and drop individual feedback - thats all I could hope for wit this really!!!

Thanks a bunch fam.

As you pointed out, shits sposed to be entertainin, thats the idea -
Some of these wouldnt hold water if presented to an emcee, but as a project in itself I think it goes...

Was def. havin a lotta fun doin this here, and I can honestly say I will NEVER try to squeeze a sample that hard ever again hah!

(It All) Ends jus sounded whole to me without the hats. A lot of these did actually.
Thinkin bout it, I often find that to be the hardest part of drum prog. to me - buildin the hats and percs...
Beatwise, thats my personal fav. right there!

Busta woulda been hella dope on #4 hah!

Horn sounds on Young Love... is actually the sustained vocal note that leads from the intro to the main section of the sample!
Heavy processin on that tho, filterin, distortion etc.

4:11 quickly became my silver placement outa the bunch - shits sounds hard without bein TOO hard you know!?
Still a certain melody to it...

Ohh, and lemme edit that SCloud real quik and make it DLable.

Preciate the props man, really.

>Heavy processin on that tho, filterin, distortion etc.

I messed around with that too. I pitched it way up and looped it to make it sound like a pad. It had to go though, cause there was no room left in my beat.

But yo, 10 beats! How long did that take you, if I may ask? Some of the guys here seem to do put things together lightning fast. It usually takes me a day for beat, more if I want to get really intricate, mix down not included...

Overall, put together very well. Nice transitions, different moods, coherence, everything there.

My favorite is the "Dream Sequence". (Did you check the mids on the snare though? Could be reduced a bit to not get in the way of the sample. Not sure from here - would have to A/B.) "Run Faster" is very Dillaesque - would fit well on one of his tapes.

...for the kind words and sharp ears!

Ill admit I kinda went overkill on this one lol...

My job (afternoon/evening) allows me to make music at night where im mos motivated to create. Took my evening hrs. out the schedule the past week, made room for plenty production!

I did 2-3 sketches per day, coupla days ina row, added the last friday night I think.

Far as mixing/mastering, Ive got a custom preset chain on the output that usually works well for what Im tryna do!

Still sketches to me tho - its only a few of these id forward to an emcee...

Twas more an exercise in balance, quality vs. quantity, while pushin the boundaries for what I can do wit a given sample!

Love the style of these. What program are you mixing in? Sounds very crisp.

It All Ends: Love the chopping on this. Very sparse. I'm trying to think if any fragmented percussion might work but I think it might be complete how it is.

80s Cruisin: Great hihats and great transition to the next beat.

Dream Sequence: Man I definitely want to hear this one more. I can totally hear someone like Dwele making an amazing song out of this.

Bad Man Business: Sounds kind of like the Law & Order theme. Ha!

Young Love: I love the drums on this. I want to hear some more samples coming in on this one.

Taste of Freedom: This one is good. Too short though. I want to hear if it can pass the monotonous test (if the beat can sound good for at least a minute or two)

Dream Sequence II: Great little interlude.

Run Faster: This is another one I wanted to hear a complete song out of. This is perfect to rhyme on. I can hear some really grimy raps on this. Great bass and drums.

Empty Coffin: Love the kick pattern on this. Glad this one comes back after the break with the vocal sample. Very eerie.

The Morning After: Yes, great close out track. I want to hear more of this one as well. Works great as an outrolude though. I love the percussion.

Excellent stuff. I really want to hear 'Dream Sequence,' 'Run Faster,' 'Empty Coffin,' and possibly 'The Morning After' as complete songs.

I do ALL my work, sequencin/mixing/mastering in-the-box-in-the-box lol... Single software called Renoise. Great tool...

Yeah, 80s cruisin was meant to be a transition type beat, works well at that I think.

Dream Seq was one that felt great while workin on it, but afterwards Im beginnin to think the drums are too dominatin!?

Yooo, concernin the B.M. Business, it gotta be that heavily reverbed guitar that reminded you of L&O right? Gotta be lol!

Young Love I actually thought of adding another layer, but everything else was done with, and instead of waitin for the right solution for that joint, I jus threw it outthere with the rest...

Bout the monotonous test, lots and lots of my beats wont pass that, since I move soo fast on to the next when making beats I rarely ever gets to do switch ups, bridges, stuff like that done... A shame really. I myself, am a one-loop typa guy tho - if the main loop bangin and diverse enuff chordswise I aint really care bout the rest...

And eerie is THE word for Empty Coffin lol... Also, I agree on Run Faster, it has the space for an emcee to move around!

Really preciate the in depth feedback!

No I think the drums are good. But of course that depends on if you mixed and mastered it as an instrumental or with vocals. If you add more elements it would probably have to change somewhat. I still think Dwele should be on this.

Yeah that was it. The last hit especially. Lol

Yeah I hear you on that. I have a bunch of very rough beats that I just started and then abandoned. I do have an idea to go back and remix some of them, and I have done it before. Usually if I record vocals for a track it will automatically get a makeover with new drums and everything. Otherwise I don't have much motivation to mess with them.

I always force myself to do bridges, transitions and change-ups almost every time I make a beat, because I know that if I end up wanting to use it for a song, then it'll help to have them already and then I'll just rearrange a little. Sometimes that stuff has to be created in the beginning (like chops). I really lose my inspiration to rechop stuff after the original session.
>

>Really preciate the in depth feedback!

Yeah, I'm really stoked that I was able to participate this go-round. I don't often get a chance to talk shop.

start forcin myself to do those (the change ups) whilst still in-the-moment too -

Oftentimes when Im in the process of makin beats, I focus waaay too much on the smallest of details, forgettin the bigger picture...

Also, work on my patience.

Yeah I wouldn't stress it though. Just a couple pauses here and there, and a bridge for good measure. Should just take a few min. And, you don't have to use it. You can always cut it if doesn't cut it. Pun intended?

My beats are always sooo pieced together -

diff. pitches allova the place, new melody etc. etc.

- makes it EXTREMELY difficult (in terms on hrs. spent) to create a proper bridge w. chord changes and all, cause of the chaotic buildin scheme!

1. Drums on point. Bass lovely....and I hear that crackle ninja! lol

2. The clap is crispy and the distorted part gave the beat a nice lil oomph.

3. Is a ole pretty beat. The piano freak was lovely...bass on point and once the drums drop its like DAMB, son! This my favorite so far.

4. that good riddim.....dope ass dancehall sounding joint.

ok, so an entire fucking SOUNDTRACK.
im down.
but i couldnt tell wen shit started so im just goin off wat i hear wen i hear it:

01. i hear straight boom bap.
02. i hear straight early SVilla/Dilla (the one with the claps).
03. FOREIGN EXCHANGE. hit em up. think you'd be a good addition to the +FE fam. similar kinda aesthetics exhibited here that i used to hear in early Nicolay joints.
04. joint @ 2:31 is SERIOUS. thats one of the ones i hope u felt u woulda forwarded to an emcee.
05. @ 4:12, again, emcee-worthy. has mad potential. could stand to hear a full joint outta that one.

btw, excellent segues from one track to another. really FEELS like a cohesive project n u can tell the thought that went into that. and brilliant work with the sample choices as i could hardly tell if you had sampled the joint at all.

great work bud.

I'm back! I've been meaning to do one of these sample flips with y'all. I've even downloaded a few of the tracks, but never actually got around to making a beat. Been too busy with life and when I have been doing music I've mostly been working on my album. But, the family is out of town this week, so I've had the house to myself, so I've been making music all day every day.

https://soundcloud.com/herb-one/tuff-enuff

I made this beat in two sessions. The first session, I just chopped everything (I went through the whole track and took parts that I liked, dragged them together and started arranging in Cubase) and then I added drums. (three breakbeats, a kick drum, four snares and two hi-hats). And then the second session, I tweaked/cleaned-up and mixed everything, added a bassline and the extra samples. I also added two claps to the third section (one is an 808). I chopped it into three parts. Started off short and just decided to keep it that way. I always try to do something different about these and one problem is I always make my tracks way too long.

Section one chops are just regular chops, with some 'aaahs' on top, so I kept the drums sounding hectic. Section two has three samples, two of which are reversed vocals. (I like to reverse vocals and then try to find parts that sound like they're saying something, or close to something). Section three comes from the breakdown at 5:00 with the guitar. And then I just added the vocal samples and some hits from other parts of the track on top of it.

I did the bassline in Reason. Then I rearranged the notes a bit in Cubase for some of the parts. I layered a duplicate of the bassline with some the low end taken out with EQ and added some dirtiness with some amplifier distortion (VST Amp Rack), because it was hard to hear the bassline at lower volumes (i.e. without the bass hitting).

Then I added some vocals from Ghost, Mos and Common a capella tracks. As well as some sound effects (Telephone Dialing Pulse, Man and Woman Giggling, Laughing Trumpet and Cartoon Spaceship Liftoff).

Definitely had fun with this. I look forward to next months sample. Thanks Torch for doing these, and for everybody who's been contributing and keeping this alive.

Good work layering these, I wouldve thought you lifted em completely offa somethin else to make it sound so "played"...

Also, thanks for the thoro guide -
Its always fun for me to compare techniques, learn a bit about other ways to accomplish what Im tryin to...

Sounds like quite a bit of work choppin in Cubase, exportin, addin bass in Reason, exportin and back to Cubase, etc....

Do you have them runnin together with Reason as a plug in (is that possible)?

Oh, and the lil vox chops here and there def. dope spice - nice panning too!!!

Goodness...

Thanks man. I really shifted from being more sample orientated to more drums orientated when I started using Cubase with no hardware. I really need to learn Reason more. I do all of my chopping in Cubase itself so it's really limiting. i.e. I'm not playing the samples, just arranging then playing back. I think you can link Cubase and Reason but I've never done it.

It's not that hard to do the bassline with my work around though. I just play a short loop of my track in Cubase and then hit play in Reason (so both programs are playing at the same time together) and arrange the bassline in Reason, checking out different sounds and notes. Then I finish editing in Reason and then export it, import it into Cubase, copy the pattern to fill out the song, rearrange if necessary, and then EQ and add effects if needed.

I really need to learn how to import samples into Reason so I can play them on the Axiom pads. Or Cubase for that matter.

One thing that I appreciate about your tracks for this month is that you could never tell what the sample source was for any of them.

i'm not sure if that solves your issue on being able to play them with pads though (i use a keyboard midi controller).

i need to take the time to learn how to manipulate samples in the NNXT. it seemed tedious when i was trying to learn, so i wound up just winging it with Redrum.

Bout the camouflage, I take great pride in makin a sample "my own", buildin completely new melodies offa somethin else.
I consider what I sample to be the "warmth" of a record (soul, spirit, etc.), the studio setting, mixing, vibe and tuning of a given session!!!

>I made this beat in two sessions. The first session, I just

I love Cubase for sequencing and mixing, but have never chopped there (I find it too cumbersome). I get my puzzle pieces in Adobe Audition and use FXpansion Geist as my drum machine (either as a standalone or as a Cubase plugin). Not a perfect process yet, but the best I've found for what I do.

>Section one chops are just regular chops, with some 'aaahs' on
>top, so I kept the drums sounding hectic. Section two has
>three samples, two of which are reversed vocals. (I like to

>they're saying something, or close to something).

Dope, I like the reverse vocals trick. Will keep that in mind.

>Then I added some vocals from Ghost, Mos and Common a capella
>tracks. As well as some sound effects (Telephone Dialing
>Pulse, Man and Woman Giggling, Laughing Trumpet and Cartoon
>Spaceship Liftoff).

Listening to your beat was a weird experience for me. Like I know "This is cool!", but I didn't catch a groove. I think I got too distracted. The beat is really busy (almost like a Bomb Squad track with all the vocal snippets and sound effects). But whereas I can groove all day to a Bomb Squad track, this was a bit much for me. But that might well be just a personal preference.

Like I said, for me, everything a dope beat needs is there. But I was too overwhelmed by all the bits and pieces to enjoy it.

Yes, chopping in Cubase is too cumbersome, but that's how I know how to do it. I'm really looking forward to a better solution. I'm going to look into Reason and see if that works for me. How does FXpansion Geist work? Can you edit WAV's as samples on a virtual sampler within Cubase?

Thanks for the feedback. I can see what you're saying. I think I could have lengthened the track by a few bars and it would have opened up a bit. I think it takes time to process what you're hearing and I think I changed to much. It wasn't like that originally but I think once I added the vocal samples, those sections almost became new beats, so it ended up with too many change ups. Thanks again for the feedback.

What I do with Geist is pretty basic. You could do all kinds of arrangements and song structures with it, but I use Cubase for that.

I use Geist like you would an MPC: layer your samples (either drums or chops) on the pads and put together your loops. Pitching and editing your samples is pretty simple.

Chopping in Geist is definitely possible (it will even chop up drum breaks automatically if you want to). For longer samples, it can be a bit tedious (but maybe this is because I'm not that used to Geist yet). For my beat "Our Dear D", I chopped the sample in Adobe Audition, saved the pieces on my hard drive and imported them in Geist to freak them.

You can use Geist in Cubase as you would any other instrument plug-in or you can use it as a stand-alone.

I think I may need to look into this. I've been getting discouraged with chopping everything in Cubase, because it's been preventing me from squeezing all the juice out of a sample completely and really freaking it.

I dig the drums gymnastics on this.

The variation is dope and the beat has real good life.

It's like controlled chaos.

Very dope.

I was gonna chill this month but I had to post 'cause I heard jokers doing it up big in here (pause)

I will give feedback on all when I get a minute.

I threw this one together yesterday....

Chopped MANY parts in the intro and tried to layer for harmonics....

I couldn't fuck with the disco part....

I still need to work on this but eff it...this is what i got right now.

bass from my microkorg...

Drums are randoms...

Added garnish and static for texture.

Had to force myself to quit adding shit. lol

Ran from my MP through my duet 2 into logic....tried to mix from there.

Anywho....thanks in advance for the ears....

Lemme know.

...be illa...

Damn innanet unstable took me damn near an hour to ready this... Worth time spent tho -

Gives me that old De La, ATCQ type vibe - shits ill. Like, iiiiiiiilllllllllll...

That simple "teeeaaarrr" was perfect for an intro to the multple vox layers later on -

Drums was onward movin, nice mix to them as usual - kinda smooth and mellow, but with snap n crack!
Birds chirping and the bongos was the icing - beautiful.

Also, I like how theres no note-offs to the bass, jus constant, movin along the drums!

im amazed that yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo... didnt annoy me too. Fit right in there...

That dope as always!!!
Ima hafta compile a mixtape of yo cuts and put it on that saturday afternoon list sometime soon...

Drums and bass are awesome! I dig the added acapella track low in the background or what you got there.

I wish you'd have come back to just the drums and bass "Sound Bwoy Bureill" style at 00:40 secs. I think that would so dope: to use the sample (or different parts of the sample) just for the chorus or to change things up every now and then.

thanks for listening.

The sparseness of the intro was cool, but to me it needed its place and then done.

In my mind....its just a build-up.

Of course if an emcee requested that part for the verse, done deal.

...it's really jamming. The yo's, the little block sound, the simple drums, and the ill bassline all build up nicely. The sample/chop is ill when it comes in but gets old. I think if anything, the samples should come in 4 or 8 measures then go back out, almost like a chorus change.

That would leave enough room for an emcee.

To each his own.

I liked the beat with the sample....matter of preference.

I would hope it would seem less repetitive with some words over it, but I do see how dropping out the main sample every now and again could add to the track, so that's noted.

Like I mentioned above...if an emcee requested it out....done deal!

Beat sounds naked to me without the piano tho!

Thanks for the feedback tho, kid.

I'm really digging this as well. I love the main sample (piano & strings). I love the drums and the programming. I like the loose feel of the hihats, not off/not robotic. I agree that the drums do sound a little 128kish. How did you compress the track and what bit rate is it? I remember a song I did a couple of years ago got gnarled up using iTunes 192. I thought I was safe using that but the difference from AIFF to that was really noticeable.

Dope stuff though.

I have no idea what happened with the sound....maybe i layered the snare too much?

You cant really hear it but the I have a rotary phone sound effect running over every other hit along with a hi-hat hit on every snare and maybe that's why it came out sounding low fi? I dunno....

I bounced VBR 320 kbps mp3 in logic....iono what happened. lol

In response to Reply # 0

I focused only on the vocal intro of the sample. Chopped that up and pitched the puzzle pieces down (made the ladies sound like fellas in the process). Came up with a main loop and a bridge, for which I added some piano sprinkles to fill it up more. Composed two corresponding bass parts. Programmed the drums and bits of percussion. I first tried out a hi hat shuffle pattern but nixed that cause I felt it would be difficult to rap or sing to (plus the samples are complex enough already).

The working title for this beat was "Is That Your Love (That Tears Me To Pieces)". Oooh, those long 70’s style titles... But then I heard "Our Dear D" after I already had put the basic beat together and was deep into mixing. I was like "Huh!?" and began adjusting the layers, EQ, dynamics and sequencing to make that idea stand out more.

Great sample. So many ways to take this. The funny thing is that I would've probably never tried to flip this on my own. I mean, really, who goes for Barbra Streisand and Donna Summers? LMAO

with the piano, strings and choir chops - they simply sound soo dayum beatiful -
Great picks for the vocal parts -
I like the idea of makin the vox "speak" - even tho, in this case, it revealed itself lol...

Also,

Real dope knock to them drums man - snare got that supercrisp DRYYY sound!!!
Sounds like a good decision to pull the hat shuffle - rhythm be flames as is.

B-piece a nice lil switch up, makes the main beat come back so much stronger.

Another great joint from you!!!

the drums are nice and the bass is REALLY nice.

I like how you arranged and have that piano is pocket real nice.

That subtle changes throughout were nice because they weren't drastic.

Dope beat, man.

Thanks! I've been back in the lab during the last weeks experimenting with drum and bass sounds. Still not quite where I want them to be, but making progress, I guess.

But then again, as an artist (or is that just me?) you're prolly never fully satisfied. The muse is always calling... good thing she hasn't left yet, but she can be frustrating at the same time.

Man, this is definitely my favorite one. I love the drums and bass paired with these chops. So ill. Yeah I think the hihats are dope as is. I also love the alternate section, and when the main section comes back it's like hell yeah.

Yeah seriously. But there's actually a bunch of good stuff in there. I love the piano you pulled out of it. Look forward to hearing more of your beats.

Looking forward to more of your music too.

Just saw on the 'cloud that you currently live in Beijing. Is there a Hip Hop scene? I know Japan is big, but China's not on my map yet.

Yeah China is still under construction. There's a little bit here, but I've never gotten that excited about it. It seems to always hit the ceiling, because it's literally underground. Like there is zero Hip-Hop on TV. I'm kind of disconnected right now. But no, it's nothing like Japan. There are big acts coming through a few times a year. It's picking up I think as far as shows go though.

...at least that's my impression from what I know of China. Never been there personally, though.

Then again, the Wu integrated bits of both cultures seamlessly (not sure how representative of Chinese culture or cliché-ridden martial arts movies are). Interesting topic.

But let's get back to our main attraction...

I think that the thing is is that there aren't really any aspects in Hip-Hop that are native to China. (that might be wrong). If that makes sense. I mean in an alternative universe if Hip-Hop hadn't originated in NYC for some reason, I'm sure it would have sprung up in some other place eventually as more or less Hip-Hop. I really don't think Hip-Hop would ever have happened if China was the only option. It's definitely an imported thing here. But I guess that could be said of a lot of places.

Is this month over already? *Looks forward to next month*

in a good way, you struck the melancholy nerve with this one!

Soundtrackish.

Thunderous lo end to that kick, make a trunk rattle...

Mad atmosphere to the vox layers, as stated above, opera type shit!
I dig when you brought the synth lead in - 80s dopegame strings.

I cant seem to locate the chops but that is kinda dope I guess!?

Anyways, solid!

Yeah this one bangs. I love how the vocal chops sound. Especially paired with the vacuum-like sound. I'm also really digging how the synth fades in slowly. Very banging drums. I agree with torch. I think some bass hits would push this over the edge. I'd also like to hear an ending or a fadeout to make it complete. Dope ish.

chopped three parts of the song
added other sampled sounds from the other sources to add to mix
programmed drums (all from one source)
sub bass
lite mixdown (wanted a raw sound)

BAM! Her name is Pam.

Drums stand out most to me. With the sub bass, the kick knocks enough that you don't miss a regular bass line. Dope as it is...

Yess. These kicks and snares are crisp. Love the drum pattern too. Love the chops and the different parts. Especially the stuttering. I think it could use a couple bass stabs here and there, maybe mostly over the chops part two (with the singing). Great beat definitely. I can dig it!

first/ intro was cool. i've heard nicer shit from you (nothing too ill here).

now this 2nd joint at 0:32 is vintage torch material. this has that classic little bounce . i like how you manipulated that (oooh) vocal sample w/ the effects, etc. but this is dope.

part 3. at 1:15 is just a quick transition:

now #4 at 1:26 is funky as hell. I like it much better w/o the sample that comes in tho. this joint was raw. I wish you would have used the "HA" sample that drops at the very end of the beat as the main sample that you blended in w/ the beat instead of the main sample you brought. but minus the sample, this beat was the shit tho! like some jaylib era dilla.

#5 another classic. this shit is dope as a bitch.

#6 u went underwater with the filter and then come up thru the canal with it. this shit is dope as a bitch too. !!!! maybe my favorite so far out of this batch.

#7 sounds like some filtered flange doing flips. u always got some thick bass. not my fave beat, but it isnt wack at all. just not as dope as some of these other ones u dropped in hear.

#8 3:13. see i was waiting on this because it sounds like some moment of truth era gangstarr shit waiting to happen... and u really went and did that. haha.

#9 i think if u woulda went and flipped #8 it woulda came out fresher than #9. (!!!)

#10 perfect way for this beeach to ride out. soulful.

u wrecked it for the june'13. i might have to drop my 1st project of the year in july'13

Yeah you right, does sound a lot like mos of my other output during the last year or so - kinda tryin to move on from that without abandonin it completely!

Cool, I had a hard time makin the lofiltered sample fit in the mix tho, not quite there IMO!

You know, I wanted to, but I never got that, nows-the-time feelin, so thats that unfortunately

I dig the sound of your drums - dry but with enuff presence, nice lil mix!

The short Pun(?) vox stabs are great for details - been lovin those for a looong time, Premo style...

But,

the sample loop tempo and the drum n bass loop tempo are completely different from each other...
Throws me off somethin serious.

Too bad, cause I really like the way the overall sound, and the sample passage is dope in itself too, but...

Anyways, some nice work on here!

https://soundcloud.com/vahelien/vahe-remnantsfeatmistavee.

sorry for the lateass entry.
basically i chopped 4 samples from the song and built it up from the there. the only thing i added was the bassline, otherwise its all sample-based.

vox were shitty this time around, spesh with the audio pops as i record em on my Galaxy S2 mobile phone and with little to no rehearsal. so ive included the lyrics this time around so u can decypher my garbled garbliness:

there's no escaping
from the truth
forgotten memories
of you
i search for light
you hide the proof
pore thru the rubble
and the ruse

siftin
siftin
shiftin
siftin
diggin
deeper
and deeper
siftin

show ur eyes
dont be blinded
by surface thangs
be heightened
self-aware
don't despair
of our love
be reminded

i think our love's
a dream come true
nobody in my world
but you
i wander round
from level to level
& when you cant be found
i'm scratchin through pebbles

siftin
siftin
shiftin
siftin
diggin
deeper
and deeper
siftin
x2.

oh and ima listen to alla these over the wknd too.
cheers,

V.

I can "see it" even with the low quality vocal recording. I think it could be a really solid track with a good quality recording and some good mixing. Love the vibe, the melody and the lyrics. Did the drums come from the sample as well? Good stuff man.

somethin COMPLETELY different in every way, and I mean that as a compliment!!!

Where some of us, myself included, sticks very close to a tried formula, your shit always comes across as
genuinely creative, experimental, at times, dare I say, innovative...

Rhythm simple but serves its purpose as a backdrop for the verbsoaked lyrics!

Chorus with the stretched words was my fav. part of this, real dope!!!

Also, love the turntable pitch downs @ the end of the chorus...

Special in a good way, good in a special way hah!!!

this is a cool joint. if u didn't say u recorded this on a cell phone (wtf?), i woulda guessed u went in thru the headphones on this one.

the production was ill and the track was fresh. my shit is right around the 2 minute mark when that extra little part of that beat comes in and is layered on top of the main joint.

love the percs....

The sounds underlying with the vox fit in well and vinyl slow down was a nice touch...

The build up to the 2:00 minute mark was real nice!

Your singing over it gave it a spooky vibe.

The minimalism to the drums was a nice approach.

Always coming with them fun left-field joints and its more than welcome with all the boom bap we come with in these!
