"Kanye West Has Become Our Pink Floyd, Just Admit It (Spin Link)"

Let the madness begin.

Premieres "New Slaves" on buildings, culture-jams 'Saturday Night Live' with 'Black Skinhead'

Projected onto a wall in 66 different locations across the globe on Friday Night, Kanye West's new single, "New Slaves," off his upcoming album Yeezus, is vital, singular, muddled, and fairly hypocritical, like a lot of Kanye West statements. He expresses frustration with the way his aspirational raps have been imbibed and misread by everybody: "What you want, a Bentley? Fur coat? A diamond chain? / All you blacks want all the same things / Used to only be niggas, now everybody's playing / Spending everything on Alexander Wang / New Slaves."

The point seems to be that those things which Kanye perceived as aspirational, or even transgressive, have with his help become painfully middle-brow and attainable. It's a diss song aimed, supposedly, at people like the clueless cast of Entourage or forever-ballin' Parks & Recreation characters Tom Haverford and Jean-Ralphio Saperstein, types who don't get it even though they think they totally get it. Also, given Kanye's quasi-beef with Justin Timberlake, it seems aimed at JT and his faux-petulant return, which seemed to crib a few moves from hip-hop's "y'all miss me?" swagger. In addition, the "New Slaves" lines about corporate control ("Fuck you and your corporation"), along with his anti-corporation rant back in February (and the "NOT FOR SALE" sign that flashed in the background of Kanye's Saturday Night Live performance), seems to take aim at Timberlake. Or, rather, the corporate crossover that has fueled The 20/20 Experience is the perfect symbol for what Kanye dislikes about cosmopolitan-urban pop music right now, even if it is filled with the signifiers that he helped establish as cool and artistic: Ambition, impeccable synergistic taste, and an almost feckless, shittin'-on-you-crumbs attitude.

Kanye's Saturday Night Live performance was the centerpiece of a weekend spent hyping Yeezus. The first song he performed was called "Black Skinhead." A noble attempt at the noise-rap of Death Grips or B L A C K I E, it felt more like a hip-hop version of Marilyn Manson's "Beautiful People" — that same post-Pretty Hate Machine industrial-pop gallop. He performed it in a leather jacket, as images of snarling dogs and rapid-fire cuts of loaded phrases flashed in the background (again, most notably, "NOT FOR SALE"). SPIN's Chris Martins contextualized the spectacle well: This was the hum-drum set of SNL, turned into something truly terrifying for a few minutes.

Still, "New Slaves" had more thrust and poignant anger. And Kanye seemed to know this, performing it without the performance-art padding and a whole lot of raw, uncooked passion. For "New Slaves," he stared into the camera while an extreme black-and-white close-up of his face was projected in the background (if you've seen Portishead live lately, you know what Kanye's doing here), almost screaming the lyrics of the final verse.

That final verse of “New Slaves” was special. It's where Kanye's focus spirals out to something bigger than his own concerns and perceived martyrdom. Instead, he's genuinely wielding his power and speaking on topics that he doesn't exactly have to address as a big-deal star: The corruption of our prison system. "Slaves" in the final verse are not slaves to high-end mall fashion, but to a prison system that incarcerates an inordinate number of African-Americans, and due to private ownership, has money invested in keeping those people in jail for as long as possible and bringing in even more. It's Kanye rapping a Spark Notes version of Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow and "the Willie Lynch Letter." And don't forget his pithy, lewd, rejection of Diddy-birthed hip-hop Hamptons' love: “Fuck you and your Hampton house / I'll fuck your Hampton spouse
/ Came on her Hampton blouse / And in her Hampton mouth." "New Slaves" speaks to the narrative that always grabs fans who've been with Kanye since The College Dropout: It's another ambitious, naïve attempt to resolve the tensions between his aspirational, money-burning id and his conscious rap-raised super ego. He might have finally done it, here.

Mostly what you're left with on "New Slaves," though, is that still-not-entirely understood message of Watch the Throne: That Kanye West is an immensely successful black artist whose parents were part of the Civil Rights generation, who had to fight for their basic freedoms. People who, as he raps in the first lines of "New Slaves," drank at different water fountains than whites: "My momma was raised in an era when / Clean water was only served to the fairer skin." It's a nice rejoinder to ongoing "post-racial" nonsense, and an assured, half-earned argument that everything a big-deal type like Kanye does must be considered and pondered because he represents a specific kind of American success story.

So, here's an art-rock star rapper (he is our Pink Floyd, whether you want to admit it or not), projecting his face on a wall in 66 cities, then appearing on Saturday Night Live, clowning clueless conspicuous consumption, rejecting the increasingly corporate-sponsored world of the media, and rapping about the corrupt prison system. It's a politically engaged, swinging-dick move. And the menacing, minimalist beat seems like the next step after he got an evil lurcher like "Mercy" onto the radio. As with so many recent Kanye West event-singles, "New Slaves" will be huge, almost in spite of its anti-pop intentions.

oh wait you didn't think i wasn't did you

but can i do it concisely.... hmmmmm

"New Slaves" is par for course for Kanye who uses the benefit of being an entertainer to not have to be taken seriously. This allows for his bullshit as message to be passed off as deep while categorically dismissing haters because anyone that would critique a 'rapper' about his 'politics' is obviously an idiot, present company included.

But according to the Kanye narrative you're supposed to believe that he is as great as his ancestors who overcame slavery, because in spite of blatant social obstacles to hinder the successes of black men, he has achieved a level of success even white people would be proud of. And you black people should take his achievements as inspiration.... oh wait.... no you shouldn't. You see the Yeezus revolutionary is not collective at all. He is an individual, He doesn't want you to stand up and make it, he just needs you to validate his making it. Continue being beneath him watching the thrown, but praise him because he gives you hope.

How was that?

Needed more blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah!!

It's like getting mad at Rage Against the Machine being one of the most successful bands of the 90's firmly within the corporate infrastructure they are supposedly raging against. At least Ye (smartly) continually shouts how how conflicted he is.

Which is irresponsible if you purport to profess any type of social message, even a flirtatious one which you'll abandon during your next iteration.

And you want to know why its fair, because just below you want to assume that all art is in trouble if mofo's don't get Kanye's message. Yeahhhhhh suuuuuuurrrreeee.

to juxtapose those messages with a 'but im am also one of those starfucker asshole too'

So it's not as if he's throwing molotov cocktails in one album, then the next one all Koch brothers.

My beef is that half the Kanye critique boils down to the image. It's not as if people were on some, I don't fuck with Guns and Roses because Axl is an asshole.

despite still internally debating whether it fits.

I think it does though.

I'm not talking about single lines though. I'm talking about "New Slaves". In which 'new slaves' = really rich black people, while the descendants of 'old slaves' idolize the gist of their oppression now that its in black face with hot beats.

But I digress.

The whole "why you picking on him" has to do not with his success, but the reification of his mythos by the media. And I've previously made similar comments about Jay-Z a few years back. I don't do it often because I know people don't care, but every now and then I feel compelled. If nothing else to put a critical lens on the 'hate' so you can't just say 'they just hate the image' or whatever.

"But according to the Kanye narrative you're supposed to believe that he is as great as his ancestors who overcame slavery, because in spite of blatant social obstacles to hinder the successes of black men, he has achieved a level of success even white people would be proud of. And you black people should take his achievements as inspiration.... oh wait.... no you shouldn't. You see the Yeezus revolutionary is not collective at all. He is an individual, He doesn't want you to stand up and make it, he just needs you to validate his making it."

^^^you can take that entire spill, replace kanye with 99.8% of entertainers. replace black men/people with whoever their core audience is..and it will be true. You just dont like how kanye does it.

Plus, its hard to call bullshit on cats when they do have genuine moments and actually good music in their history. But I see whats going on here

the question mark at the end there is wondering why you haven't done so already to shut me all the way the fuck down (it's pretty easy too). i mean here we've wasted how many back and forths which are pretty much off the topic, and you still just saying 'all'. I'M RIGHT CAUSE I SAID ALL NIGGA!!!

All OKP's are passive aggressive debaters without the skillset to actually win a debate, but with the benefit of being on a messageboard where they can fall back to snark-lite one liners, tangential diversions, non-replies and arguments about posters and posting rather than actually take their L. I'll exemplify that with you.

I'd be wrong though because I regularly accept the L's handed me (begrudgingly or not) which folk here will testify to.

But I used to LOVE how artists used to cultivate everything from image to style to look to sound...albums, state performance, etc.

Cyndi Lauper (yeah, I know she predates her) is 1/10th the artist that was Madonna, nobody was throwing major shade her way.

Yeah, someone like Kanye doing shock lite-rock tactics is a bit underwhelming when the white duke is still making interesting music, but it's still a better attempt then anyone's had in twenty years. Gaga comes close, but her music is HORRID, hate him or not there's at least one point in his shifting discography that most people would like

The problem we will have in this discussion is convincing me that Kanye's talent eclipses Gaga's. If you can do that....

Im a fan of her very early techno-pop shit (Bad Romance, Just Dance, etc). Everything else...unlistenable.

She's got the same thing A.Key's got...good voice, alright piano/songwriting skills, HORRIBLY BLAND SONGS. But I love how she goes for the gusto as far as image is concerned a la Elton John or Marilyn Manson.

The Lauper comment was that while I can't convince you that Kanye isn't talentless since that's personal opinion, I feel that the hate he gets is disproportional because he's one a few the few superstars even attempting to pull a Pink Floyd (i don't even know what the OG article means by that, but lets assume it's shitty Spin magazine code word for 'artsy shit'). Lauper didn't have much talent, but she was able to flip her image into something lasting and we aren't burning her over the coals for stinking up the place with her many wack songs (outside of the hits)

15. "The very notion of pulling a Pink Floyd is misconstrued"
In response to Reply # 11

First in order to do so requires having achieved a great amount of initial success. Like you don't do a Floyd on the first album because you won't have that type of budget.

So saying he's the only one trying is on par with sayin he's the only one with the personal budget to do so, and is no measure of the art itself.

Even more, what Pink Floyd did was actually break new ground. Quite literally everything Kanye done is a rehash. And it's a new money splurge rehash not some well thought out artistic endeavor.

It'd be more accurate to parallel Kanye with Warhol's pop art factory, but I think even then Warhol had more involvement and personal investment in the art than Kanye will ever have because for him it's just the means to an end. For an artist, the art is the means and the end.

Granted, it was 67 but still, songs like "Interstellar overdrive" and "T4ake up the stetoscope" and "Power toc h" etc. are really wacky stuff for a debuting band; actually, outside of Zappa (who did a double where one record was accessible), I don't know many major acts that came out on their *debut* in such an uncompromising, art-school avantgarde fashion

I think it furthers my point though. When we're comparing Kanye it's not because of the art that went into the music is the high wire theatrics, which Floyd had but not just to have but because they played into the high falutin artsy nature of the bad to begin with.

In response to Reply # 41

Prog-rock was an ''in''-thing then and records like "Atom heart mother" where they collaborated with an orchestra was supercool then, england's album-rock scene was very pompous then and shit like that worked commercially as well-ELP were huge and King Crimson did reasonably well.

US album-rock aesthetics were a bit different and more "roots"-rock and singer/songwriter oriented so they were only a cult band there but their sales in England and much of europe justified a major label deal...

that was started during the alternative 90's, record-labels signed fucking Steel Pole Bathtub and other acts that had zero commercial pote4ntial; it's not really this era

Anyway, Flaming Lips managed to make it work for them but as I said in another thread, Flaming Lips are (or were) very successful in England with magazines like Mojo and Uncut going crazy over them and the sales reflecting that. Record-labels are multi-national corporations-more so now than ever before-which the Lesson due to its understandable american focus has a tendency to forget.

Had Flaming Lips been solely dependent on USA, I doubt they would still have a major deal...

U gotta chill with the Lauper lambasting....

That girl could sing her face off....Better than a lot of her peers at that time...

And she has always happened to be a pretty good lyric writer....As evident by her recent Tony nominated triumph as a songwriter....

I know it seems like Lauper was an easy target because u got a lot of young heads on here who don't know better...

But my old ass does....

43. "Because he uses big visuals, he's now the new Pink Floyd?"
In response to Reply # 0

He's more Architectual Abdabs than Pink Floyd.

I can honestly see why the comparisons are made, but I read this article and went off on Twitter about it. I like most of Kanye's music, and Kanye truly doesn't care what he says, for better or worse. The difference here is that with Pink Floyd, they used music and visuals to push what they were doing, never themselves. Kanye uses music, visuals, and himself to become the focus. There are still people who think Pink Floyd is a man, or that the group has guys named Pink and Floyd. Is Kanye a risk taker because he's the only focus, not splitting it between three or four semi-anonymous entities. I don't think he's a risk taker because Pink Floyd added visuals and *he is too*, but he knows exactly what he's doing.

As I had said this past weekend, Kanye is thinking along the lines of "if you want something to see, then I'll give you something to gawk at." He gets the praise because he's in the mainstream, and the mainstream loves a good story. He's more than willing to give a story, good, bad, or false. Pink Floyd kept themselves in the clouds they were obscured in, on purpose, but maybe that's the difference between letting your music doing the talking vs. a generation that has to know what you spit, shit, or bleed at any given moment. We are feeding the monster he talked about on his last album, and we're willing to watch the possible fall of this self-proclaimed King Kong (as he described himself in "Black Skinhead".)

Kanye is going to do what he can, because he can. Let's put that on the side. I now want to see who will attempt to copy him for the wrong reasons, or simply go back to the basics. Then again, there are thousands of artists who are not only back to the basics, but remain being basic because sometimes, less is best. Yet we all love a show, we want the vaudeville, we want the pomp and circumstance because Kanye, at times, believes he is his own reality show. Yes, I'd love for him to tone down and just rock it out with Madlib, or just stay low-key and present himself as a genius on the level of a Stevie Wonder. But he's not having that. Being considered better than a cherished white band grabs headlines and causes immediate discussion, for if someone said "he is a more regimented George Clinton", then that would lead to bickering. Or worse, the lack of discussion.

As much as I hate one aspect of this, I'm a participant in the viewing, even though I know very well that I really don't want to be. I truly want something that's better, and there's a hell of a lot better, but I have to dig harder to find better. I have. What I feel is better isn't going to get the accolades, and thus are not being celebrated. Their loss. I like being able to cheer on my favorite music en masse, yet the older I get, the more it is about my own satisfaction. I write about it in the hopes someone else will share that magic I feel. Yeah, everyone gets what Kanye is doing, that's great, I do too, but in the words of The Roots, do I want more? Very much.

I don't know. It seems West is very happy with manipulating a perception, specifically of himself. He definitely understands the barrier between himself and the artist, and the artist vs. the audience. Is he, to add another Pink Floyd reference, building a wall that's too high for him to peek over? I think it's part of the facade. It used to be where people were down with West for being funky and cool, but now he's "something else", or at least he's doing something else that others in hip-hop aren't doing. People may reject what he's doing, but he's also being accepted for doing something else, and he can cater to that and them. Or maybe his thought is "I may never be able to enter your world, but if I can cater to people in your world and benefit from it, I'm a made man." It's gutsy.

Radiohead would be an example of a well liked and respected group in today's age that plays it low key. BUT compared to Pink Floyd they're a lot more public, they do webcasts of rehearsals, use twitter, very politically active, etc. We can call out Kanye for becoming too much of a persona but rappers have always been about being a persona. Maybe they didn't have it as well developed or get the same success as Kanye but everyone from Slick Rick to Chuck D to Ghostface Killah to MF Doom are personas.

And yeah maybe he lots of praise for actually trying to make art in the mainstream but at the same time there's tons of ppl lined up around the block just to trash him B/C he's mainstream. It's a double-edged sword and personally speaking I feel like even if he's using shock tactics he's already established as an artist without it so it's not as if that's the only reason ppl are paying attention.

I too would love a low key album from him but I can't fault an artist b/c of what I want from them. He's always been an ego-driven artist and it plays a central theme in his lyrics. At this point it is who he is, just like Public Enemy is a political group and I shouldn't expect a party song from them.

I agree with the topic, while thinking the exact opposite: I enjoy his music much, much, much more than Floyd's, and I like Floyd.

The comparison is really wrongheaded

Yeah... it sort of DOES spoil the music for me. I see him the same way I do Kobe Bryant. If it weren't for how annoying his fans were, I would appreciate him and his music more.

That the whole "Pink Floyd-Kanye" blow-up on this board is just giving some folks who never had any use of West to pile on...

Bottom line: When it's all said and done Kanye West will go down as the most important hip-hop artist of his era...

No amount of griping and nitpicking will change that...

Why punish Kanye West because some writer made a dubious comparison just because the man projected an image of himself on 66 buildings...as if he was destroying the Wall or commanding floating pigs.....

Let the man be judged on his own merits and musical contributions...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Of course Kanye will be considered one of the most important artists of his era but when you become that big and aim that high you always get more hate. Jay-z's retirement made tons of ppl stop hating him as much and has enjoyed a lot more love in his post-retirement career than his first career lol

as one of those who came out of the woodworks to shit on him... *rollseyes*
seriously though. what's so important about him?
was mc hammer one of the most 'important' hip-hop artists of his era?

btw i realize that i'm setting myself up with this and no one will share my opinion so if you answer in an acceptable way it will be impossible for my perspective to be validated.... but just for the exercise i'd like to know why kanye is 'important'?

I'm pretty sure folks have tried to offer their views on West's importance...And given your *eyerolls* I'm sure it wouldn't matter what I say...

All I will say about West is he has successfully switched lanes in four different stylistic worlds within hip-hop, which is not an easy thing to do in an artform that doesn't give acts a long shelf-life or frankly room to grow or change artistically...

I'll let u handle the rest....

>I'm pretty sure folks have tried to offer their views on

>wouldn't matter what I say...

It actually does. What you say matters a lot, which is why I asked you.

Important is a loaded word. It means that the contributions were essential to the form. And so my questioning of his importance is in how it is essential to the form we call hip-hop. Now you did qualify with this era, but the deconstruction of hip-hop in this era as it fits into the broader historical context provides a strange ground for analysis.

>>was mc hammer one of the most 'important' hip-hop artists of
>>his era?
>
>U lost me with the whole West = Hammer....

Maybe I'll come back to it but let's get to the important stuff.

>All I will say about West is he has successfully switched
>lanes in four different stylistic worlds within hip-hop,

Do you mean four different hip-hop styles or four different styles while claiming hip-hop?

I'm guessing backpacker is the OG, but nobody cares about his real backpacker days, they just like to call College Dropout his backpacker album. For the time it was a great counter to what the common perception of a rapper should be.

Was Late Registration a drastic departure... I don't think so. But maybe you see that as a different style because he stepped up his production game. I think I've heard it said it was his best rapping album.

Graduation completed the trilogy right. That was expanding into different production territory. Different breed of rapping content too if I recall correctly. BY this time he's securely a major rapper not a mere backpacker so we'll say somewhere in the trilogy there's that shift.

808's was a huge risk which depending on who you asked sucked balls or was the greatest thing ever. Was it essential to the form of hip-hop. Hmmm perhaps. It said take risks niggas. Some followed suit I guess but....

MBD... was both a return to form and a going way out. Opinions of it were mixed as well.

Watch the Throne high on life buddy album. Mixed reviews.

>which
>is not an easy thing to do in an artform that doesn't give
>acts a long shelf-life or frankly room to grow or change
>artistically...

But has he grown artistically? This is the thing. I'll give growth from album 1-2 then it's been hit or miss experimenting which I'll give you it is indeed rare to have a hip-hop artist afforded that ability. But he just flirts with it, and that's my critique. HIs experiments are novel ideas which he can dress up really well and dismiss just as fast. They become grandiose in scope and that cosigns them as art, but when evaluated on the artistic level it's just really not that great.

He has a spotlight and he uses it to his advantage. He has lasted in a strong position for a relatively long time and will likely continue to do so. Perhaps he'll grow to actually start putting more time and effort into himself as an artist over an icon. But IMO that's his legacy. He redefined the iconography of the hip-hop artist. But how important that is to the art.

But we're thinking about hip-hop less and less as an art these days and perhaps when the books are written iconographic entertainment will be the best descriptor of it. If that is the case then yeah he probably is one of the most important iconic entertainers of hip-hop.

In response to Reply # 107

I got him in my top 5, but he can't be no lower than your top 15-20, really.

That's as a producer.

As an artist, he's had a run of solo albums that most rappers would KILL to make artistically - let alone sales-wise - that have altered the direction of both mainstream and indy hip-hop at least three times.

Dude's ambition, execution, and scope is impressive as hell.

Not to mention that he is the only mainstream pop hip-hop cat who is regularly giving placements and credits to classic, golden-age acts. While making at least 2 - 4 boombap hip-hop tracks per album.

Dude is HELLA important in the history of modern music

Kanye never coasted off the success of others. Luck in today's music world could get you 2 successful albums, 3 tops but most only get 1. Kanye's managed to turn every album he's done into a success and regardless if one isn't as liked as another, at least he's kept ppl's interest for more. I realize you're not a fan and that's fine but at a certain point don't you have to acknowledge that it may not be your thing but he's done pretty good?

Kayne been at the right place at the right time period.

however he is vastly overrated and genric as all get out iMO.

he ain't that memorable as a MC. more of a Beat-maker.

i mean he just crossed over at the right time period.

back in the day Kayne would have been as deep as Me Phi Me and now you got turkeys calling him some sort of a Genius?

Prince Be or Prince Markie Dee made better records than Kayne and them two combined are about as memorable in the big picture to most as Tone Loc.

And regardless of how highly his fans think of him (Which he has a huge far reaching fan-base), the ability to stay as relevant as he has for pretty much a decade shows that ppl are clearly hating too much. Kanye's not the greatest rapper by any means but he's managed to take hip hop in new places (Especially for mainstream hip hop which has been a wasteland for that same decade) and has consistently made hits from critically acclaimed albums. There's plenty of mainstream rappers I don't like and ppl love but I don't spend 1/100 of the time ppl spend hating on Kanye. There's an extra hate for him

I'd say that shows how well he's marketed, not how much he's hated
not sure how having a big fan base and relevance in an era with not much to offer shows how people despise his success

That band catches shit because they SUCK, are we supposed to give props to any ''classic rock'' group just because? Obviously, not EvERY classic rock act should get props just for being there and selling million-someone has to be put on the chopping block and Eagles is my first contender...

EDIT:And Kanye gets props from everywhere including the mainstream mags; MBSF or whatever it was called was praised as the record of the year like everywhere in spite of being just as pompous, overblown and ''stadium'' as any vintage Genesis or Yes-album that the same critics hate so, yeah, terrible comparison...

You know what's actually fucking stupid? To think that b/c you don't like somebody they suck. That's what 13 y/o kids do, grown ppl can acknowledge some music fits their taste and some doesn't. You can criticize artists all you want and I'll gladly listen but when you reduce your criticism to "they suck" or spend so much time and effort dedicating to talking about how much you don't like them that's insane to me.

And to me it's weird that ppl hate on The Eagles but not half as much as similar groups like Steve Miller Band, Foreigner, Boston or Fleetwood Mac.

How is that stupid? If I don't like somebody, they suck. Or rather, depending on how much I don't like them, they are mediocre, decent, bad, they suck. "Suck"i s just a codeword for "I REALLY don't like them"

LOL, what? Where is the contradiction? I can't acknowledge that? How? Why? My girlfriend loves celine dion... If anyone sounds like a child, like a 12 year old who just learnt about democracy in school, it's you. "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion"... No shit, sherlock...

I think I spent a grand total of three-five posts or so in the history of OKP talking about how much I think the Eagles suck. There are regular posters here who every DAY point out how much they dislike Prince or Kanye or Nas or... I don't really see a problem there...

This is not really weird at all, success/familiarity breeds contempt.

The rest of those bands are far easier to avoid & less talked about.

None of them have received the same level of validation critically or commercially.

Fleetwood Mac was the only one even comparable, there's a lot of reasons they catch less hate but it wouldn't be very interesting to go into them.

With those other acts after each of their runs was done in the late 70s-early 80's, you didn't hear from them outside of summer shed tours and classic-rock FM stations.

Lou Graham wasn't on MTV for its entire first decade of existence.

Tom Scholtz wasn't a recurring guest star of the most iconic cop show of its era.

They didn't set new records for pricing on their reunion tour or become the same symbol of record industry bloat/excess that the Eagles did.

they have talent and a few money tracks, however in there hey day prime and peak they were a better version of Bon Jovi IMO.

i mean the Eagles were never anybody's top band. in the 70's when did they actually dominante again?

and there Greatest hits album sold alot of over time and yet it feels contrived on the real.

put it like this when you think of Big time bands, the Eagles just don't exactly roll out the red carpet like that.i can respect there craftsmanship hybrid of Pop/Country tracks, however they were never that deep IMO.

Kayne ain't got nothing in his catelog seeing some of there money tracks.

Kayne is more closer to Hot CHocolate than the eagles IMO

along with Fleetwood Mac they sorta embodied that California sound & were probably the biggest-selling US bands of that entire decade.

Hotel California & Rumours outsold Off The Wall along with any Beatles/Zeppelin/Stones album ever.

I don't see the Bon Jovi argument since they were sorta all about the frontman. I don't think many people could even name another member of the group outside of Richie Sambora and he's more famous as being 'the guy from Bon Jovi who dated Cher & Heather Locklear'.

The Eagles on the other hand have three different members who have had platinum-level solo success and all four members sang the lead vocal on a big Eagles song.

That being said, I hate the fucking Eagles.......unless there's a 'Philadelphia' in front of the name.

yeah I know about there solo career and whatnot, however i mention the Bon Jovi thing because 2-3 songs to me are what they really known for period IMO.

and like how Bon Jovi been riding off of "Living on a Prayer" the eagles been living off of "Hotel California" for 30 years Man.

the eagles to there credits done got alot of milage off of 5 songs and I gotta tip my cap.

the eagles wee a good band, however not Great IMO

I liked a couple of Joe Walsh's James Gang cuts, Boys Of Summer from solo Henley is a guilty-pleasure song I'll leave on if it came on the radio, One Of These Nights had a cool bass line intro that I always thought a rapper should have sampled, the guitar solo on I Can't Tell You Why is something that I dig for some weird reason & In The City was cool in The Warriors even if they should have found something more street for that movie.

However that's about the extent of Eagles stuff for me.

this is a case of not liking HIM

But once again, OKP is normally wrong when choosing dopeness... Ye's
MBDTF is second to Nas' Life is Good. Hell, just last week Kendrick got
0.5 points above Life is Good... which is an utter joke!

It all comes to likeability around here, not music... not to mention

get bullied on okp into liking wack shit, and Kanye my friend is NOT
wack.

I was never that big on Kanye in the first place, when he first was getting his props in here, I could never understand why, granted he would have some dope shit w/o the bongos presets / chipmunk bs early on ( Down & Out, Get By, Jesus Walks, Muzik, Guess Who's Back, Stand Up ), Thru The Wire was cool just because of the story,H to the IZZO sucked ass..it just seem Kanye was at the right place at the right time in terms of heads waiting for a return to more sample based hiphop, as at the time alot of the keyboard electronic sound was dominating. He can make some awesome music for other people, but he just doesn't come off as someone who can consistently carry an album by himself, as he has leaned on John Legend / NO I.D. / Toomp / Mike Dean / etc

Seriously. This is the most dumb fucking argument there could possibly ever be. It allboils down to whether you like them as a person? FOH!!

I know you got a solid head on you so I'm going to save the snark fest. You're going to have to accept the fact that Kanye isn't the best at ANYTHING musical. This is one of the areas where hip-hop dropped the ball, because the best is today equated with the most successful doing it. But if you want to talk about musical talent, like actual musical talent surely you realize you've got little legs to stand on.

But hip-hop is all about selling the personality. *ALL* Much to my chagrin it never got beyond that to really valuing its art on the musical merits. Instead it's about whoever has the biggest personality. And that's exactly how Kanye has risen so high in the ranks. He sold his personality as this all around hip-hop genius and folk ate it up.

Now its gotten to the point where he's so accomplished at it that the genius is implied. How dare someone suggest that he isn't a musical genius. But he's not. He just sold the biggest personality. And even now when you're trying to champion him on musical merits (can you even state what those are), you're doing so based on the personality which he gives to the music, not the music itself. If you could answer the parenthetical I could probably prove it (or alternately you could sold shut me the fuck down).

But seriously if you think the musical genius of "Drunk White Girls" is stronger than the personality he's selling on the song, be my guest.

Has he put out a project/s that you thought were great?

College Dropout(2004)-- 8/10
Late Registration (2005)--9/10
Graduation (2007)--8/10
808s & Heartbreak (2008)-- I didn't buy it... didn't feel the vibe
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010)--9.5/10
Watch the Throne (with Jay-Z) (2011)-- didn't buy it... I didn't trust it

Now how would you rank these projects?

Straight up fam, I believe Ye is being judged by his asshole-ism.
For the life of me, I can't see how dope beats, and DECENT rhymes
isn't what matters. I try to be objective as possible when it comes
to Hip Hop, and trust me, some cats I don't like either. For me, pussy niggas
turn me off... therefore 50 Cent could never make an album that I'd
buy. This dude built his career hating on other rappers. Does that mean 50 is wack, absolutely not... but I ain't buying
his shit, EVER. But, I couldn't tell you with a straight face that
50 hasn't made any dope songs. Let's be honest, Ye's name turn some
cats off. I believe when he drops a new track, showered in media
drama, they won't give it a second try... I understand tho. So, I'm
not challenging your ears and what you consider dope Hip Hop, I'm
simply asking is this beyond music?

He wishes he was more artistic and groundbreaking, but it just doesn't come off that way. More contrived, less honest. Pink Floyd manipulated tape echoes and manually phased reel to reel. Its a lot different than using phase and tape echo plugins on pro tools with distortion on the vocals. Kanye cares about album sales and his ego first. Pink Floyd never needed to prove to you they were artistic, it was just obvious.

I'd say a better comparison for Kanye would be "We're an American Band" era Grand Funk or maybe Kiss (no make-up, but leather pants).
