i'm begging any DJ on here to drop the needle on one of these, even in a 25+ club, and film the response...

I used to see him at a local bar (Brewer's Art) over on Charles Street near Penn Station & he told me that while he was thinking about how to handle it, Kid Rock contacted him personally to cut him a check plus if I recall correctly gave him a point off the record.

Collectively, by whenever that was (I'm guessing somewhere around mid-2001 or so) he had gotten paid more off 'Bawitdaba' than he had off the rest of his recorded rap/film career.

He also repeated a similar slightly more toned-down version of the story at some Hip-Hop Summit thing they had at Towson University that I was working on for some shitty local rap fanzine whose name now escapes me.

the OG version with the actual sample intact is JUST ok.

but the version that actually got released and some run is super wack in 2013.

And now that we're removed from all the controversies surrounded by it, and the fact that it was so jarring to see Nas in a shiny suit alongside Puffy...

Good post. I would also add any song with "Ride or Die" as part of the title. A plethora of big name artists put out disappointing albums in 1999.

Mase - Double Up
Puffy - Forever
Notorious Big - Born Again
Foxy Brown - Chyna Doll
DMX - Flesh of My Flesh
Nas - Nastradamus
Mobb Deep - Murda Muzik (had some heat but the bootleg better)
Def Squad - El Nino (disappointing, borderline wack)

Maybe that's how Jay got so big. All of his NYC contemporaries fell off that year.

Weak drums, overly glossy production, excessive triangles, fake scratches, and everyone on some "spagheddiiii/cheddyyy/evereadyyy" shit. Swizz Beatz and Puffy's Hitmen made a lot of music I'd rather forget.

and "terrible" is a strong word.
jefferson starship's "we built this city" is terrible.

there are no good elements to that record.
not lyrically. not musically. not vocally. it's all terrible.

eminem has other songs that i listen to more than that one,
but it's still good.

that it bricked as a single.

Now that I check wiki says it reached 91 on the Hot Singles chart, so I gues you could look at it either way.

I thought 'Oh Yeah' was a bigger hit a couple years later but apparently it wasn't, definitely a better song tho.

the radio & saw the video on BET doesn't mean people actually cared for the record. Nobody gave a shit about that record and most people I know hated the video. Somehow the "Chyna Doll" album was certified platinum without any actual hits. Pretty sketchy eh? Sounds like a Def Scam. Even if the sales were legit there's no proof (not even on an anecdotal level) that the song itself made any waves.

a first for a female rap artist and hot spot was the lead single. it cracked the billboard 100, which means it "charted". it was hot in the clubs and on black radio. everybody loved the beat. rahzel even chose to perform it for a promo. i personally hated the song and i remember how much love it got.

i always harp on naughty by nature or treach not getting their dues in rap history retrospect because they had too many white fans and rap media buried them.
but a song this wack getting burn cancels out a "take it to ya face" or a "dirt all by my lonely".

this is back when in ny we thought what was going on down south was "new" and "different" and we tolerated it.

boy how wrong we were.
big pun wouldn't be caught dead on a piece of shit like this in 2013.

...

infact big pun struggling to catch up to the tempo only makes this join wacker than it already was.
so yeah, everything about this is wack.

"jigga" - you can def drop the intro and the first hook, and it'll go off, but you're right you could not get the verse off

"guilty conscience" - probably never

"gotta man" - probably never

"you can do it" - it actually works, but not in major cities def not NY... (it went off for me in North Dakota, and somewhere in Florida)... i know, lolz.

"hate me now" - this could go off, probably for whole 1st verse too

I hated most of these songs back in '99 when they were being played to death and 14 years later...they still ain't hittin' on shit. LOL.

I can tolerate You Can Do It but the rest are pure shit IMO.

Man, that Ruff Ryders sound was awful. Nostalgia doesn't even make it sound better!

Jigga My Nigga intro, 1st chorus, directly into first verse of Public Service Announcement. Trust, the crowd will go bizzonkers. Anyone saying different doesn't go to clubs. Then again I think we determined in like 2003 that Lessonheads don't go to clubs.

...as a DJ. I did like the Eminem joint as an album cut, though.

The rest of them were not good. Not now or ever. "Jigga My Nigga" gets people excited off of recognition for about 8 bars, but then it just sounds like the corny-ass record that it is.

Yuck.
