"West Coast Fans (and haters), come here....I present...The Timeline"

http://www.djr-tistic.com/#!timeline/cpye

https://soundcloud.com/r-tistic/timeline

I started on this back in early 2009, after MzAshton sent me the Hip Hop Odyssey mix from Jaguar Skillz. Me being me, I said "it's great, dope, but....not enough West Coast! I should make a West Coast version!" I was basically talkin outta my ass, but then said....shit, why not?

I worked on it for a few months back then, and just lost interest in it..shit was too overwhelming. Had to do so much research on it to make it balanced, and I just burnt out...but always said I'd finish it.

After DJing Paid Dues, making my website, and having waaaay more buzz than I did in 2009, I started back up on it a month ago. Had to cut it down to 500 songs from about 900...so I for sure "missed" a few tracks just because I wanted to include a variety of artists and sounds. I coulda made 500 songs from only using Snoop, Pac, Cube, Too Short, Quik, and Mac Dre.

It goes in order from 1981-2012....covers all the major eras of West Coast Rap. Took a good 80 hours or so to complete it. Making it balanced was for sure the hardest part...my main base is more 25-35, L.A. natives who prefer the commercial and club side more than the Underground side, but I wasn't gonna cater it to them only.

Feel free to Tweet it, post it, share it, comment on it, etc.

I'm listening to this on my dayoff during a mini Dj tour in Asia.

Bigups.....Of course, of being a dj myself, i know how much work went into making a mix like this, so appreciate the patience and dedication.

Respect on putting some of the Rappers Rapp Records collection in the beginning of the mix, as well as putting some 90's West Coast underground Hip Hop artists (I would've been shocked if you put the Visionaries in the mix...LOL). I am surprised that you didn't put some Ice T songs in the mix, but like you said, I'm sure it was impossible to put everything on there....I know if I did something like this, i would've forgotten alot of songs myself.

Everything that you put was i totally remember....brings back memories; makes me wanna pull out my records just to make sure I still got them in my collection....LOL! And i am also quite familiar with all the new generation of West Coast artists and their songs that you put towards the end....big ups for putting Bishop Lamont's "Grow Up" song in the mix....i'm a little biased cause that's the homie....LOL!

Again....big ups for all the hard work. You deserve the accolades.

Salute!

I think it's wild that most people, even my 35-45 year olds, weren't familiar with Rappers Rapp Group...the first song that most of them recognized was either Bad Times or "Radio Activity Rapp." I don't even think I realized that you were part of the Visionaries, I def remember em from back then!

I had two Ice-T songs on it, Colors and 6 in the mornin, early on. Nothin after that, though.

Did you know all of the Bay songs too? It feels like it's rare for anybody to know all the L.A. AND Bay songs, or vice versa...it made me realize that even being in the same state, we were still separate as hell aside from the E-40/Short/Snoop/Pac type artists. L.A. folks would know a Spice 1, but not a Dre Dog or Cellski...while Bay folks knew Suga Free, but not a Mausberg or Comradz. Yeaaa Bishop is cool as hell, I actually gave him a few beats back in 05. We were all shocked that he didn't blow back then.

Thanks a lot for checking it all out, for sure!

Oh word? You were at the KNG joint?....that's what's up.

Yeah, Bad Times & Radioactivity Rap was definitely the popular ones out of the Rappers Rapp Catalogue.

Yknow what? You're right, you did played Ice T....i guess i was surprised that you didn't put "Cold Wind Madness" which is his first record out with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis produced, & "Reckless" off the 'Breakin' soundtrack....but then again, Colors & 6 In The Morning is the one that everyone knows so i feel you.

Yeah....you have to be really well versed in the LA Underground Hip Hop scene to know about the Visionaries...we were one of those "either you love us or hate us" type of groups.....we're pretty lucky that we have a decent cult following up to this day.

As for the Bay Area joints....i know alot of it, but not alot of it. I'm a big Spice 1 & The Coup fan. I definitely remember 415, Ray Luv, Cellski, Total Devestation, Raw Fusion, RBL Posse, etc, just because I would get some Bay Area promo vinyl records from a record pool i used to be part of back in the days. Of course some of my Bay Area peeps would hipped me to whatever what was hot as well.....yeah, definitely it's weird that there's such a disconnect with the LA/Bay Area music scene, but i also think it's also that love/hate relationship that LA & Bay Area have.....Imagine if the whole California scene (LA, SD, SF), as well as Seattle/Portland area would really support each others scenes, the West Coast would be truly be united & unstoppable.

Yeah, i'm surprised as well.....I was rooting for Bishop to win myself....talented emcee & a great person overall....I'm still rooting for Bishop to win. Heard some of his new material; to me it's bangin...real passionate, he still got the hunger & drive....

Word up....keep up the good work & keep on keeping....Salute!

Like, I'm pretty sure all of House of Pain were from NY, but the group got their start out in L.A. and were produced by Muggs and whatnot. So that will work.

Dunno if Aesop Rock "counts" though. He's from NY, came up in the NY scene, and recorded most of what he's known for in NY. He only moved to the Bay in like 2007 or so.

That's me just being picky though.

they tpically mixed 4-7 mins at the beginning of each of their mixtapes with quick snippets like this, this plays like a two sided 90 min mixtape in the same style. Loving this mix fam.

Brings back a lot of good memories spending hours standing at the tables at the roadium flipping through the mixtape folders hounding Steve and everyone there for the absolute newest music they had or were holding out on.

>Like same beats, vocal patterns, and everything. They just

as if they came from the West. But a lot of Texas music does get love here because the sounds have been similar at times. "Ice cream paint job" actually blew up in L.A. first, and you see we took the Dougie from there.

What's funny and even dope to me..."How u do dat there" ALWAYS sounded like a West Coast beat to me. But it didn't get much play here after 98...so when Problem took it and re-made it, it ended up being the biggest hit out here since "Function" and it's essentially the same exact beat. But it feels so native to us.

Rapp lives in Oakland now, and he was extremely hype about this. He told me he's still making music, and has some tracks with E-40, Snoop, and 4-Tay. He passed it to DJ Flash from Rappers Rapp Group, and he contacted me as well. Crazy to see how it's reaching now! Thanks to everybody here who's been passing it along to folks too!

if I will.

It's a whole lot I had to leave out. I spent hours where I'd literally only find 4-5 songs to take out within a hour period. And some tracks I still wish I coulda kept, like a "Sweet Black Pussy"...but it's literally nothing on there I think I could have taken off.

Thanks for keepin it in rotation!

Listened to it twice so far: Once at work (helped me make it through the work day) and drive around the Bay last night; it sounded dope in the whip and the homies dug it too. And it introduced me to some shit even I hadn't of, and I pride myself on knowing a lot about Bay Area hip-hop.

Great job, homie.

https://soundcloud.com/djrtistic/the-timeline-500-west-coast-songs-1981-2012 - The new link since I got banned from Soundcloud, SMH

Just wanted to up it...I ended up meeting about 25 artists who are on here since making it, and they were all hype about me making it and putting them on...even though Short Khop was like "you gotta hear my new shit too though!"

I ended up DJing for AMG, 2nd II None, Casey Veggies, Damani, Yoyo, Thurz, The R3j3ctz, Cali Swag District, and Big Hutch from Above The Law since I made this. The wildest thing I realized is that 90% of the artists on here STILL make music or at least still perform!

Shoutout to everybody here for putting me onto so much, even for L.A. music. A lot of it was before my time, and a lot just flew over my head even at the time that I was into music. And thanks to everybody who re-posted it and shared it!

In response to Reply # 69

You know, with the last two/three years worth of tracks? And with the tracks that didn't make the cut?

But yeah, this shit is still dope. I make sure it's on any iPod/iPhone/whatever that I own.

In response to Reply # 70

to have the 2013-2023 tracks...yeah that's way too far away, but don't think it's worth doing anything for just a few years at this point.

As for the tracks that didn't make the cut, I have used a few in my yearly series, the "9x for 9x" that I have 93-98 for so far, and plan to do 90-99. But aside from those, I am just using them in other mixes...like I have a Snoop, Pac, Quik, and Kendrick mix, then I have Crenshaw Sundays which I wanna make a few more. I want to do a Bay version of Crenshaw Sundays too.

I should have done a B-sides two years ago if I were to do one.

And good lookin on it all!

What I notice is that in L.A., the kids that are closer to being from the hood seem to appreciate the old school L.A. music a lot more than those from the Burbs or nicer areas. This was even the case in 2001...all my homeboys at the hood schools were ONLY bumpin DPG, Quik/Mausberg, Suga Free, while the ones at the Private schools and from Baldwin/Ladera were all about commercial radio music.

500 songs seems like a lot until you dig super deep...it was one of the leftovers. I took off a LOT of Quik, Cube, and Snoop songs, just because I coulda had 200 just from them
