"Here's a: PRINCE WAS DOPE AS FUCK LIVE POST (fill it w/ hate)"

That 54 y.o. m.f. was like a light skint version of this m.f.:
http://youtu.be/dsebiwY8MsE

I'm still not crazy about a couple elements of 3rd Eye Girl as a backing unit.

BUT...

Prince WAS HAVING A FUCKING BLAST.

I had a blast.

M.F.'s guitar playing had my jaw on the floor numerous times.

so...yeah.

all you "prove to me that candy taste good", niggas? STFU
all you "30 yr old songs, He A Relic", niggas...refreshing this page every 27 seconds in your drawz at ya mama house? STFU

was killing it for a little over 2hrs

Even the songs I don't like it was fun to watch them try to play a hole in them bitches.

Even being privy to the set-lists from the show reviews from the day before, the show felt very LOOSE.

But getting schitt like "Let's Work", Adore and "Forever In My Life" in that setting was SICK!!!!

I've never seen dude this relaxed on stage before.

http://citysound.bohemian.com/2013/04/25/live-review-prince-at-the-dna-lounge-san-francisco/

Like a boss!

“I got a lot of hits. We could be here all night.”

4:12am.

Ears ringing. Laying on the couch. Can’t sleep.

“Sign ‘o’ the Times” riff stuck in head on endless repeat.

Still thinking about the silhouette of his hair against the blue lights.

THWACK! at the screen door. What the…?

Oh, right. It’s the next day’s newspaper.

A steamrolled body, an obliterated brain, both riding out an adrenaline buzz: this is how I finally went to bed last night after Prince’s final show of a two-night, four-show stand at the small, 800-capacity DNA Lounge in San Francisco.

Was it worth it, you ask? Tickets were $275, the wait in line was two hours, about 50 line-jumpers cut in front of us drinking and smoking weed, and as a half-naked guy rollerskated up and down Harrison St., the doors finally opened. Inside, there was a strict no-photo policy during the show, and it was impossible to move—people packed in shoulder-to-shoulder—while idling out another hour-long wait.

Prince finally took the stage at 11:40pm. . . . and Lord, it was fucking incredible.

“San Francisco! Are you with me?!”

There’re more than a few reasons for why this show was among the best I’ve ever seen, and being able to stand 12 feet away from the godliness of Prince is the obvious one. Seeing the man’s every movement and facial expression, witnessing him staring right at you, being able to hear him when he sings off-mic… these intimate moments are the justifications of paying $275 to see Prince, as SF Weekly‘s Ian S. Port discusses here.

The DNA Lounge is a favorite of Prince’s—he played there in 1993 and 1997. (Squint your eyes inside, and the venue is a dead ringer for Minneapolis’ First Avenue circa Purple Rain.) His current band, 3rd Eye Girl, is like some howling dragonfire Hendrix-Sabbath-Boris altar to fuzz and funk, a three-piece band that allowed Prince to shred on guitar nonstop. This is key: Prince is truly Top 5 Greatest Guitarists of All Time material. You know that video of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that everyone posts, with Tom Petty and George Harrison’s kid and some other tired guys strumming slowly, where Prince comes out in that hat and just destroys on guitar? It was like that last night for the entire hour-and-45-minute show.

Out of all the four DNA shows, last night’s late-show setlist was the best if you’re into old songs (who isn’t?), especially from Sign ‘o’ the Times (yes, please). Full versions of “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Let’s Work,” “U Got the Look,” “Purple Rain,” “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,” “Forever in My Life,” “Adore,” “Bambi” and “Sign ‘o’ the Times,” as well as the encore medley of WhenDovesCryAlphabetStPopLifeHousequakeIWouldDie4U etc. etc.

But most important was that Prince was utterly enjoying the hell out of himself all night. For “Forever in My Life,” he played a swampy, slapping Claypoolesque bass with a coy grin; for “Purple Rain,” which melted the entire building with just one opening chord, he delivered the “HONEYIKNOWIKNOWIKNOWIKNOW times are changing” line with bone-chilling intensity; in “Adore,” he lowered his voice quasi-seductive-Barry-White-like to sing “when we’re makin’ love”; he made all those crazy monster faces when he finished off a meaty solo with one hand; he guided his band with miniscule hand gestures, such that they always kept an eye on him to wait for the changes; he twisted his impossibly skinny body diagonally, backwards, up and down; he made eye contact with people in the crowd and blew kisses and all things told delivered a goddamn show.

The girl next to me, who announced loudly “I’m wearing purple underwear!,” was losing her mind with the rest of us.

“Someone gonna get pregnant up in here!”

Can you name any other musician who WANTS to play as much as Prince? Even Springsteen, the consummate salesman, sometimes goes through the motions (check the lagging, lackadaisical tempo in live versions of “Born to Run” and “Thunder Road”) while others, like Jay-Z, make it their trademark to appear as if they don’t want to be on stage at all (check: every live performance since 2001 except maybe this one from election night, 2008). Can you imagine what Michael Jackson’s 50-day residency at the O2 Arena would have been like? Can you imagine it being as natural, as passionate, as urgent as Prince is every single night? Of course not: it would have been the very calculated result of months of planning, rehearsals and fine-tuning.

But Prince? This is what Prince does, people. He shows up last night and sings as perfectly as he’s ever sung, plays the shit out of every instrument in range, he twists his guitar pegs to tune his strings mid-solo, he turns around and mixes his own monitor board mid-song, he plays guitar behind his head, he gyrates his pelvis and commands singalongs and throws out his guitar picks and plays, plays, plays, all in a day’s work—except it isn’t work, it’s normal life, the same way you or I walk down the street or buy milk or complain about the internet.

I was reminded of a quote about Prince from some old liner notes: “Music pours out of him without any rhyme or reason,” Alan Leeds, Prince’s old tour manager, once wrote, “heedless of clocks, calendars or environments.”

“Is there a curfew?”

As for the new songs from Prince’s upcoming album Plectrum Electrum, they’re actually really great, and lift riffs from Edgar Winter (“Frankenstein”) and Led Zeppelin (“The Ocean”) and benefit from a long steeping in Hendrix. (Again: This band is unreal, and lead guitarist Donna Grantis nearly one-upped the boss.) But when Prince is in the zone like he was last night, it doesn’t matter what he plays. You can be at a Prince show during “FIXURLIFEUP” and waste your time thinking of older songs you wish he would play; this is like watching SNL and expecting Amy and Tina to show up. You just have to roll with the program. Prince does not make this easy, and actually exacerbates the desire to hear his old hits because he still looks exactly like he did when those hits came out; you see him and think, “Well, he’s clearly 29 years old. ‘Raspberry Beret’ is up next.” (Compare these two Grammy appearances, from 1985 and from 2013.)

Scanning the crowd at the DNA, you saw yuppies, drunks, hipsters, married couples, freaks, businessmen, all the usual types, all decked out. I remembered seeing Prince at the huge HP Pavilion in San Jose in 2004 and wishing I’d had a camera just to take photos of his fans. But that night, I also sat way up in the corner of the upper deck—far, far away from the floor—and vowed if ever I had the chance to get to one of these small club shows, I’d jump on it, despite the occasional scorn they invoke. In the Bay Area, Prince has played at places like Ruby Skye and the Fillmore, where in 2004, Rob Harvilla panned the formless, meandering show featuring Najee: “The music itself? Ehhhh. Five out of ten. Would’ve made a fabulous Wednesday night bargain showcase at Yoshi’s.”

Last night, inside the tiny DNA Lounge, with this great band, with a top-notch setlist and all that guitar playing, it was more than a concert. More than a dance party. It was a communion.

Concert Review: Prince & 3rd Eye Girl ‘Live Out Loud’ in San Francisco

–Rhonda Nicole

http://soultrain.com/2013...francisco/

“Every while in a great once/there comes 2 town a show/that lives up to all your funk-spectations/no matter how high or low…”–NPG, “New Power Soul”

When it was announced in March that Prince and his new three-piece, all-woman band 3rd Eye Girl (Ida “Bassida” Nielsen on bass, Hannah Ford on drums, and Donna Grantis on guitar) would be ripping up the west coast with their Live Out Loud club tour, Prince lovers immediately began the scramble to snag tickets. Initial releases suggested that tickets would more than likely go on sale within two weeks of the tour announcement; but to the surprise, elation, and in some cases, chagrin of purple party people from San Diego to Vancouver, the flood gates opened a mere 24 hours later and the mad dash was officially on. Dr. Funkenberry even likened the rush for tickets to Prince’s 2000 Hit and Run tour, which elicited a similar response as fans ecstatically waited in lines and online to purchase.

With the Live Out Loud tour being decidedly smaller in scale than any of Prince’s more recent outings–with the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductee favoring intimate club settings over the arenas he graced during his Welcome to America, 21 Nights, and Musicology tours–it was inevitable that these shows would sell out with a quickness. His two-night, two shows per night, sold-out residency at San Francisco’s DNA Lounge was no exception. Thankfully, I was able to cop my ticket to the late show on April 24, the fourth and final of the San Francisco leg, in the nick of time...

The club was nearly at capacity less than an hour before show-time, so getting–and keeping–a prime spot on the floor in the standing room-only venue was a crap shoot. Scanning the crowd I marveled anew at the diversity Prince’s fan base represents; spanning generations, race, ethnicity, gender and sexual identity, the room was packed with people from all walks of life whose one goal was to have their faces melted properly with unadulterated funk. A woman in the balcony chanted “I like funky music” (from 1998’s New Power Soul) while others in the audience began the refrain “oh-we-oh-oooohhh” from the classic “It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night,” as a burst of smoke emanated from the stage outward into the sea of anxious music lovers. Alas, it was nothing more than a mere psyche, as another 20 minutes or so passed before the lights finally went black and Prince and his badass band took the stage. Guitars roaring like thunder, bass thumping like a wild heart, and drums thick, bright, and brutal, Prince and 3rd Eye Girl launched ferociously into a sleazy, nasty groove of a thing that morphed unexpectedly into “Let’s Go Crazy.” Bereft of the gospel-tinged arrangement we’ve come to know and replaced with grinding hard rock, this was a new take on a beloved classic, a theme that would run throughout the night’s performance.

Slipping seamlessly from the Purple Rain chart-topper into 1981’s “Let’s Work,” Prince raised our collective heartbeats before switching gears into the rock-licious “Endorphin Machine” from 1995’s The Gold Experience. To paraphrase a line from The Black Album’s “Le Grind,” Prince got us where he wanted us just in time to break out one of his newer joints, “Screwdriver.” As the music swelled and the LCD screens flashed colorful images of the song’s lyrics, Prince teased, “Can I lip-sync one song? Everyone else is doing it!” A solid, no-holds barred rock song through and through, “Screwdriver” punched through the air with Prince and Donna trading guitar licks, and our intrepid purple yoda singing “I’m your driver” then demanding we respond, “You’re my screw!”

One of the many highlights from the night was Sign O’ the Times’ “Forever In My Life,” with Prince nabbing Nielsen’s bass as the song’s signature beat pulsed through the room. Though I personally missed the song’s brilliant backing vocal line, I absolutely couldn’t have been more thrilled to hear this song–one of my favorites–played live. And when Prince took it to church, enlisting the crowd as the choir in a call and response of harmonized “forever”s ŕ la the Sign O’ the Times concert film, I don’t know about the rest of the audience, but my heart broke, fell out of my chest, dissolved into the floor, then put itself back together again.

Slowing the pulse down ever so slightly, Prince slid behind the keyboard for “Purple Rain” and “Adore,” before resuming his post at the front of the stage for a slow-jammed version of “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man.”

Prince and 3rd Eye Girl treated us to an instrumental groove called “Plectrum Electrum,” which is also rumored to be the title of the collective’s forth-coming album. Among the many surprises for the evening was “I Like It There,” from 1996’s Chaos and Disorder, and “Bambi” (Prince). Unlike his performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where he smashed Roots member “Captain” Kirk Douglas’ guitar at the end of the song, this time Prince playfully offered his guitar to the audience before setting it down gingerly on its stand. From there, he returned to the keyboard to give the audience a medley of familiar hits, including “Sign O’ the Times,” “When Doves Cry,” “Pop Life,” and “Housequake,” the latter of which he teased with a loop of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.”

Throughout the night Prince shone the spotlight on his musical cohorts, giving each musician ample time to show off her chops. As an artist who has consistently featured women musicians in his bands, it wasn’t particularly shocking that this new group would consist of artists who could more than capably handle playing alongside him with masterful precision. Nielsen, Ford, and Grantis, perhaps more than the other women musicians who’ve graced the stage with Prince, bring an edge to the mix that adds a fresh spin on his classic tunes and leaves plenty of room for exploration with their new material.

The show ended a bit abruptly with an unfamiliar instrumental (yes, I was stumped!), and Prince and 3rd Eye Girl ascended the stairs behind the stage while the audience waited, somewhat confused, to see if they would return for one more quick set. But when the house lights came up and the techs began to strike the stage, it was clear that the show was over. The slightly anti-climactic end did nothing to diminish Prince and 3rd Eye Girl’s showing throughout the night, however, and the promise of what’s to come when this newest musical outfit finally releases a full-length album.

At one point during the show, I’d made my way to the ladies’ room to freshen up my lipstick and ensure that the evening’s glam was still in full effect. A young(er) woman said to me, “When do you think he’ll start playing his hits?” I smiled and glanced at her in the mirror, and replied, “Oh, honey, he’s been playing his hits all night.”

In reflecting on this exchange, I realized that these Live Out Loud performances are emphatically not meant to be the (commercial) hits-driven shows Prince has done over the past few years, but a journey into new territory that uses familiar songs and fan favorites as a bridge to connect the known with the as yet unchartered. From the stripped down instrumentation to the deconstruction and re-imagining of classic tunes, Prince is ever at the cutting edge of creative innovation, and this latest initiative is no exception. So if you’re expecting to hear the same songs the way they’ve always been played, you may want to adjust your expectations accordingly; this is not your standard-issue Prince concert. And that is a good, good thing.

Prince and 3rd Eye Girl have dates coming up in Vegas, Tempe, AZ, and San Diego, with the tour wrapping up in Anaheim. For more information, check out 3rdeyegirl.com.

Prince is coming to Tempe

Five Reasons You'll Want to Have Seen Prince at the Marquee Theatre
By Dan Moore Fri., Apr. 26 2013

http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/uponsun/2013/04/prince-marquee-theatre-tempe-tickets.php?page=2

Pop music is obsessed with youth, but it's also obsessed with itself. Result: An endless procession of youthful musicians from pop golden ages who are rapidly becoming capital-h Historic figures. The MTV era's counterculture heroes are now culture heroes.

Bruce Springsteen is an institution. Madonna is an icon. Prince is the kind of guy you have to see when he comes through Phoenix -- not because you love Prince, but because you'll want to have seen Prince.

So why will you want to have seen Prince?

Prince is playing four shows at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe on April 30 and May 1. (You've probably heard about them.)

1. You're just a huge Prince fan.

Well, okay. That one's easy enough.

2. Prince is very good at performing live music.

Prince is a conspicuously talented musician, even among famous musicians; that's always been a Prince-coverage cliche. Like you might go see Eddie Van Halen play guitar, or Michael Jackson dance, or Frank Sinatra sing, there's a certain inherent attraction to watching Prince play music that isn't there when you're thinking about whether you should catch Bon Jovi, even if you happen to prefer "Livin' on a Prayer" to "Nothing Compares 2 U."

This has been in effect for as long as Prince has been famous -- even at the bottom of his career, sales-wise, people who were making fun of his erratic behavior or the words Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic couldn't begrudge him his talents.

3. You want to tell people you've seen Prince

Nobody wants to tell all his friends and family members that he's seen Bon Jovi -- at least, nobody feels compelled to do that. But people operate under the assumption that seeing Prince is important. An implicit reason for seeing him is that you will want to tell your grandchildren, let alone your friends, about the time you saw Prince at an intimate concert at the Marquee.

This one has also been in effect for as long as Prince has been famous -- unlike some other acts of his caliber, though, the impression has only gotten stronger over time that you Need to See Prince. Where his contemporaries have slouched toward nostalgia-act-dom, he's remained someone vital, someone you go out of your way to watch.

4. He still looks like Prince

Do not underestimate how important this is: Prince is nearly 55 years old and he still looks, sounds, and acts exactly like Prince. The only simple way to tell when a photograph of him was taken is to fashion-date his hair.

Some artists Prince's age won't allow you to forget you're watching a nostalgia act, because they've aged like we unfortunate, normal human beings age -- put on weight, lost some hair, stopped trying to shoehorn themselves into leather pants. They have to cheat on the high notes, they have a new album nobody bought that they'd like to play a few songs from.

Prince has not. Because of that -- because his voice and his face and his unmistakeable style are all intact -- seeing Prince now creates a very powerful illusion that you're just seeing Prince whenever.

5. You're not sure how long all of this will still be true

The most expensive tickets in live music are usually expensive because you're not sure you'll be able to wait until next time -- or that there'll be a next time to wait for. People sell out enormous stadiums everywhere Paul McCartney goes, for instance, because he's still in remarkable shape for a 70-year-old, and next time he comes through your town he might not be.

Certainly, the chance to see Prince at a venue the size of the Marquee doesn't come around very often. More broadly, though, Prince will eventually not be at the top of his game anymore. One of his strange rifts with his own celebrity might stick; his voice might start to go; he might go from looking and sounding exactly like Prince to looking and sounding really good for an x-year-old.

And when that happens, seeing Prince won't quite be the same, even if you still feel that weird compulsion to have seen him.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Sounds like the band has really started to blossom since the Dakota shows, just wish they had some material to go with this idea, Did they destroy Adore also, or was it nice?

Prince, downsized: April 26, The Joint
Prince at The Joint

by MIKE PREVATT

"Las Vegas, you mind if I play some guitar?"

As if Prince had to ask. Even even fairweather fans of the Purple One — though, mysteriously, not the stodgy compilers of best-guitarist magazine polls — know dude shreds. But Prince loves nothing more than to ask rhetorical questions onstage. ("You having a good time?" "Hear that bass?") And, of course, wail away on his six-string, which is what he did through the better part of his 8 p.m. show last night, one of four shows at The Joint this weekend.

For this particular theater tour, Prince has stripped it down, and we're not referencing the Lovesexy album cover. His support band, 3rd Eye Girl, only numbers three — a guitarist, bassist and drummer, all women who look like they time-traveled from the Age of Aquarius, which wasn't random. Most of the show took on a decidedly late-'60s/early-70s vibe, from the band's costumes and the background screen's graphic loops (imagine a screen saver if they had them back in 1969), to the overriding aesthetic of the first two-thirds of the setlist: raw, bluesy, fuzzed-up, psychedelic. Even Prince himself looked very Hendrixish in his overcoat and new 'fro.

Hendrix was a touchstone throughout the main set, as was Cream, Led Zeppelin, even The Stooges. This should give you every indication of how remarkably loud it was in The Joint, and it wasn't solely due to the twin axe attacks from Prince and guitarist Donna Grantis, who holds her own next to her boss ably. Ida Neilsen slanged out chunky, concrete-heavy basslines that, while mixed in well, threatened to overpower certain numbers. In fact, the PA system — which facilitated an offensive line of amps on either side of the band — ocassionally crackled and rattled as if levels were too elevated or a speaker had been blown, especially during the stoner-rock number "Fixurlifeup" and a stormy go at "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man," which was peeled of its spry keyboard pop melodies. Sometimes it was all about bombast and little else. Other times, you felt the songs were missing something, and not just the very elements the band arrangement couldn't include.

But most of the time, it just plain rocked. Prince nailed the solos during an even-riffier "U Got the Look," quitting just before they went on too long and remaining economical to the song. During the first few songs, you wondered if such a guitar-centric concert should would turn into an excuse for indulgence. But this wasn't one of his late-night jams, where an infusion of or reinterpretation through blues and jazz allow him to stretch out. Half of the rockers were tight, and the other half had enough structural shifts and elemental variety to keep onlookers engaged.

After a trio of sexed-up tracks, Prince took to the piano and gave the crowd exactly what it wanted, "Purple Rain," though he stayed behind the keys and denied us that iconic, beautiful, concluding guitar solo — ironic, given that instrument's focus during the show.

His Highness would redeem himself from that transgression with an uptempo melody of favorites, though it suffered from the distraction of audience members dancing onstage. I don't want to watch drunken ticketholders when I can watch a performer known to work a stage like James Brown. But, alas, Prince kept to the keys during this segment, which incorporated two of his greatest compositions — "Sign O' the Times" and "When Doves Cry" — and his gift to Sheila E, "A Love Bizarre." After "I Would Die 4 U," he returned to his guitar to close out the show with a brilliantly pared-down "Alphabet St.," which sounded like the funkiest rockabilly number you ever heard.

At 100 or so minutes, it might've been the shortest Prince show you ever saw, but nonetheless a steal for the double-digit price tag. Which is the cue for everyone else to snap up the remaining tickets for tonight's two-fer.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

prince's version of rock nowadays has some teeth to it.
the "real-music," vegas style "funk" he was doing for 'musicology' for a while had no teeth at all.

which is not to say that the "rock" that prince is doing now
really rocks out the way the best rock should.

but it has a pulse, and i like it.

that's exactly how I've felt about both styles of Prince in recent years. Prince's "real-music" in the past was always underpinned by the "classic Prince" sound (thinking of the critic's choice period of Parade/SOTT/Lovesexy).

I like that Prince is going back to rock, and it sounds more like his 1979 "rock" that I think carried him through much of his exciting run to the top.

the thing that always pissed me off about Prince in the '90s is that was the perfect time for him to "rock out", but he never widely released anything in that era that went that route.

THE ENERGY!!!
THE ROOM!!!
NO SYNTHS!!!
STRIPPED DOWN!!!

AIN'T NOTHING MORE ROCK N ROLL THAN THAT!!!

I told y'all this is how he's taking a swing at Coachella (& Jack White's girl group & The Sleeping Giant that is Rock N Roll spectacle while everybody wished Zeppelin would reunite for ______ pick a monster festival).
Ain't nobody on that (Coachella) bill bringing this much RAWK to the stage than this old mofo this spring.

This IS NOT any incarnation of any of this stuff that we've come to be familiar with.
Even the songs I wasn't crazy about played well in the room in the setlist...that's also ROCK N ROLL!!!
Y'all getting to "retired generals & experts" with the blind speculation...be more "ZEN".
It's been a while since he was in any "positive" place with his multi-layered synthesizing of styles and sounds...well, he's back at it.
This time he's translating a lot of different songs into this band/line-up/dynamic and IT WORKS!!!
I've been processing that show for the better part of the week since...and it's as close as I'll probably get to seeing some RAW 80's FIRST AVENUE/PURPLE RAIN "The Kid".
I don't really know how else to explain it to y'all. That's what that room felt like...like, Morris, Jerome, Apollonia,Brenda,Susan & Billy Sparks were in the room.
You do not get that "Prince" in a stadium/arena/auditorium/theater...this was "local" "townie" "Prince".

I'mma stop talking now.

IT'S PRINCE...IT'S FUNKY TOO!!!

TRUST ME!!!

now get fishing

Not feeling Prince the guitar wanker, never have, and on top of that he adds a female "hey look im a girl" and i can wank just as hard - sorry not feeling the overall product of this tour, closes with a freaking DJ set, well prince get a band that can play these tracks live

not a fan of the sampler set, specially for over 10-15 minutes, not real music by real musicians

they would be better of just playing Chaos and Disorder tracks and some Undertaker stuff, but the new tracks are awful lyrically , hell better tracks lyrically appear on NPS album

and again, just a tad bit too much guitar wanking, the new chick clearly is very technically proficient on guitar, however have not heard much emotive playing from her

as a result Prince has also resorted to wanking and I aint feeling that shit, specially the tone coming out of that Vox guitar and his recent set up

and sorry but Led Zep tinged breakdowns/rifs don't mix with Prince, and Let's Work re-rock was awful

the new songs are awful lyrically and Plectrum WANktrum goes no where, I see why the video clip was 1 minute

and why is the drummer getting a pass?

and the second part they have a "sampler set" LOL TOUR that's right
LOL at spending all that money to see a wank fest, and hear Prince sing to DAT of his own songs in the second half, a guitar wank tour and they are playing Purple Rain on piano?

go get some more people and try some more.

'cause...you have the poorest contextual frame of reference for what/who "Good Prince" is more than any vocal member of this board.

The fact that you also flip-flop between being a purple knob slobbering troll stan and a contrarian "which way to the dogpile" hate stan, means you get the first BIG OL' PAT ON THE HEAD for waving your ignorance around like a flag, 39 posts deep. (*Hi Five*)

But...getting back to "context", I was there...IT WAS DOPE. I ENJOYED IT. I'D PAY MORE TO SEE THE SAME SHOW AGAIN. From '78 to 89, to the glimpses of hope in the 90's and 2000's to that crazy ass night in DNA in 2013, IT WAS DOPE. I ENJOYED IT. I'D PAY TO SEE THE SAME SHOW AGAIN.

Who cares about how you feel about the sampler set that you heard a bootleg of?
Again...you're probably not intelligent enough to know that those performances were edited to fit onto a disc.

But, GROUSE AWAY and HAVE A NICE DAY.
Ain't nobody bringing LOL or Rock the Bells to your fly over ass neck of the woods, no way.

impossible to talk to you if your angle is to merely dismiss or magnify every little thing that ...in the building at the show hold no weight.

I don't like "Guitar" or "Fix Your Life Up"....but dude put his foot in 'em both and made them enjoyable enough.

Prince is a versatile motherfucker, songwriting, performing, recording...

Some of it is the most inspired schitt of my generation, some of it has been depressing...

It's par for the course for anyone with a career as long as his.

The fact that this mother fucker is having fun...getting his rocks off playing in front of a white female power trio...dressed in his Jimi homage gear...is subversive in only a way like Prince can.

Sorry, you haven't been able to see it in it's proper scope.

I'm not in love with 3rd Eye girl...I'd love to see him do the same show with Levi Seacer and John Blackwell with Wendy Melvoin on rhythm guitar...but, Prince is already compromising as much as he can via the set list and the venues he's decided to play.

Maybe if they professionally shoot and release some of these shows you can get a better idea of how much this is a breath of fresh air compared to "The Twins" or "Bria Valente" or "Tamar"...or "Bald Headed Scary Amazon" waving a flag and singing WAAAY TOO MUCH, or all the snoozy smooth Jazz & Blues he was playing with Renato Neto holding down the keys, getting medlies and predictable set lists, and long-winded religious sermons in between songs like we've seen in the last 15 years.

But...you go ahead and flex your lucid perspective. You know and I know...you don't know what the hell you talking about and have little point of reference.

Enjoy this attention while I'm giving it to you...but recognize, like I recognize...you typing out your ass, I'm not.

Please don't stop... you're killing this kid.

Anybody that became a fan during the late 90s shouldn't get to speak on Princely matters... that music, while some good, lacks the magic that he demonstrated back in the 80s and early part of the 90s.

I was excited to read your initial post and certainly hope he comes to Toronto with this tour.

I saw him in Montreal at the Jazz Festival in a tiny venue and he killed!

Mr. Blak!! You are jokes...

I'm wondering why Maxxx didn't enter this post - It's clearly because of you man.

You would've destroyed his pesky little arguments and grade 4 comparisons.

Review: Prince electrifies Marquee with guitar-heavy rock

By Ed Masley The Republic |
Azcentral.com Wed May 1, 2013

http://www.azcentral.com/...eatre.html

Word on the street going into the first of two Prince concerts at the Marquee Theatre on Tuesday, April 30, was that people should expect what drummer Hannah Ford described as “full-on rock-and-roll overload.” And that Sabbathy reinvention of “Let’s Go Crazy” making the rounds on the internet suggested what a night of Prince in full-on rock-and-roll mode might entail. But that was just a launching pad.

Imagine the legend’s guitar-hero essence as filtered through “Maggot Brain,” “Are You Experienced” and “Paranoid,” playfully fronting an all-female rock-and-roll juggernaut, 3RDEYEGIRL, with all amps on 11.

It was heavier than that. And at times funkier.

It started, as it had to, with the speaker-shredding majesty of “Let’s Go Crazy,” its tempo slowed to a crawl that suggested the song had been purified not in the waters of Lake Minnetonka but the tar pits of La Brea. Prince made his entrance, backlit, arms out, strapped on his guitar and started riffing. This was funk as Sabbath would have done it, the audience shouting along to “oh no, let’s go” on the chorus. Ida Nielsen took the spotlight for a fuzz-bass solo. Because why wouldn’t “Let’s Go Crazy” have a fuzz-bass solo? They worked in bits of Edgar Winter’s “Frankenstein” because, again, why not? And Prince squeezed out the first of many awe-inspiring solos, an incendiary blues explosion of squealing, soulful passion.

As they rocked through “Endorphinmachine,” Prince said he had a question for us. “You like rock and roll? Do you like rock and roll as much as I like you? Do you like your rock and roll funky?” When it sounds like that, hell yes, we do. And then, he squeezed out more amazing high notes on guitar.

Prince traded solos with second guitarist Donna Grantis on “Screwdriver,” a new song accompanied by a lyric video, and “She’s Always In My Hair,” an epic rendition that came to a head through a call-and-response with the audience on the chorus hook, Prince soul-clapping and another searing blues-rock solo.

The gospel-flavored brilliance of “The Love We Make” was custom-made for testifying, which he did, preaching, “Sacred is the prayer that asks 4 nothing, oh/While seeking 2 give thanks 4 every breath we take.” (And that spelling is Prince’s, not mine.)

“Guitar” had a heavier stoner-rock vibe than the “Planet Earth” recording, his bandmates pulling back at one point while Prince tore it up on guitar. And “Bambi” was as welcome here as when they played it on the Jimmy Fallon show. Prince’s falsetto brought just enough grit to the chorus and when it came time to solo, he played guitar between his legs and behind his head.

Prince closed the proper set with a rousing rendition of “Cause & Effect,” preaching compassion in that soulful preacher voice that served him so well in the opening monologue on the “Purple Rain” soundtrack. “It’s just one little word,” he said. “But why don’t we all sing it. There’s a small group of us, but we can make a lot of noise.”

The first encore began with a headbanging crawl through “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,” a portrait in thick fuzz riffs topped by Prince’s soulful vocals and Grantis coaxing squealing high notes from her amp on one of her best solos of the night. From there, they deconstructed the Shondells hit “Crimson & Clover” as a mash-up with the Troggs hit “Wild Thing,” ending in a chant of “over and over” before again leaving the stage.

For the second encore, Prince welcomed a true funk legend, Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone and Graham Central Station, who wore a spectacular pimp hat, to the stage for a bass-popping blues and funk jam. Then, he sat down at the organ for a gospel-flavored “Purple Rain,” skipping the song’s iconic lead-guitar break and getting the audience to join him on those high-pitched oohs at the end. When it ended, he told us, “It’s too good to leave it right there. We’ve got to do it one more time” before launching back into the song.

.

It would have been the perfect ending to a perfect night, but Prince had other plans, returning to DJ a medley of hits as a select group of audience members danced along on stage. It started strong with a minimalist reading of “When Doves Cry” (what, no keyboard hook?) and made its way through such classics as “Hot Thing,” “Sign ‘O’ the Times,” a chant of “Ain’t no party like a purple party ‘cause a purple party don’t stop,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Pop Life” and “Housequake.” Again, it would have been the perfect ending to a perfect night, but Prince had other plans. Again.

“I wonder,” he said, “can we get Larry Graham back out here?” And that led to a joyously funky finale of “Alphabet St.,” a song that more than held its own in that lofty position.

Was it everything anyone could have asked for when they threw down $277 for a ticket? No. A lot of people would have asked for non-stop greatest hits played faithfully. But this was better. And those greatest hits still exist in amazingly faithful versions on the records.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

I want to see him, but $275 for no reserved seating is a big risk.

The shows sound good, but the venue, the sound and the crowd can fuck a show up real quick.

I'd like to see this on Bluray.

So now P is working in that new song "Down," (actually kicked off the show with it...pretty bold) which a lot of folks say is vintage Prince (Probably one of the most "Prince" songs I've heard in ages...)...Review, below...Yep...

Prince triumphs (again) in 2nd show at Marquee Theatre
By Ed Masley The Republic | azcentral.com Thu May 2, 2013 9:47 AM

http://www.azcentral.com/...eatre.html

For anyone making a return trip to the Marquee Theatre on Wednesday, May 1, for the second show of Prince’s two-night stand, the heavy fuzz-guitar heroics of it all was less a revelation, more a given. As I said of the first show, “Imagine the legend’s guitar-hero essence as filtered through ‘Maggot Brain,’ ‘Are You Experienced’ and ‘Paranoid,’ playfully fronting an all-female rock-and-roll juggernaut, 3RDEYEGIRL, with all amps on 11. It was heavier than that. And at times funkier.”

The legendary Larry Graham — of Graham Central Station and Sly and the Family Stone — reprised his guest appearance of the night before on bass. But this time, Graham turned up earlier and played two different songs (a reggae-flavored take on Prince’s “Joy in Repetition” and Sly and the Family Stone’s euphoric funk classic, “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).”

And many of the first night’s highlights were repeated, including the Sabbathy sludge-rocking reboot of the “Purple Rain” hit, “Let’s Go Crazy,” “The Love We Make,” “She’s Always in My Hair,” “Endorphinmachine,” “Guitar,” a medley of hits with Prince bringing the beats from a DJ booth, and “Purple Rain.”

But the pacing was markedly different. Where the first night had ushered us in with the heavy psychedelic rock of “Let’s Go Crazy,” Wednesday’s concert eased in with a soulful new ballad apparently titled “Down,” Prince promising that “this could be the saddest story ever told.” And when that song was over, the giant red curtain closed and reopened to Hannah Ford rocking the thundering beat of “Let’s Go Crazy.” They stayed in heavy rock mode for the chugging “Endorphinmachine,” which featured a blistering dual-guitar lead from Prince and Donna Grantis, and “Screwdriver.” .

Another song he hadn’t played the first night, “Dreamer,” took the Hendrix vibe that permeated both shows and ran with it, rocking a classic wah-guitar riff drenched in low-end fuzz. Abruptly shifting gears, he cut from “Dreamer” to a celebratory cover of Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music,” the audience singing “Play that funky music, white boy” back at Prince, who playfully ended the song by asking “What’d you call me?” But the best part was before that. Everyone was movin’ to the groovin’, as the song suggests, when Prince said “That’s funky, but you know what?” And just like that, 3RDEYEGIRL stopped on a dime, James Brown-style, and Prince unleashed this really cool ascending riff to bring the song back in, the perfect blend of showmanship and artistry — on a Wild Cherry cover, of all things.

“Always in My Hair” was better than the first night, peaking when he led the audience in a call-and-response in falsetto. Then, after promising “We gonna have church tonight,” Prince sat at the keyboard and took it to church with a soulful rendition of “The Love We Make,” which featured a soaring lead from Grantis and some classic testifying from the man on keyboards, who reminded us that “sacred is the prayer that asks 4 nothing.”

He strapped on a bass and proceeded to pop it with funky abandon on “Forever in My Life,” reminding the crowd, “Told you I was gonna take you to church.” As they shifted gears again into the slower reggae vibe of “Joy in Repetition,” Prince said “Speaking of bass...,” which seemed a bit mysterious until Graham emerged from the shadows. Prince’s monologue on “Joy in Repetition” was brilliant, as was the solo that followed, short bursts of melody ending in squealing sustained notes, all filtered through cavernous echo. And Graham was amazing, his performance far more self-assured than the previous night. After watching him take a fuzz-bass solo best described as bad-ass, Prince said, “That’s the master on that thing. We might have to take a break so you can use your cell phone and call somebody to tell them about Larry Graham.” And then, they shared the spotlight and a mike for a joyous rendition of “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).”

At the end of “Thank You,” Prince said, “What a night already, right? If somebody told me about this and I wasn’t there, I’d be maaaaad.” And with that, he introduced his DJ set, singing along to the beats he was mixing as his bandmates joined in on a medley of such classics as “When Doves Cry,” “Sign ‘O’ the Times,” “A Love Bizarre,” “Housequake,” “I Would Die 4 ,” “Hot Thing,” “Pop Life” and “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.”

“Purple Rain” was just majestic with Prince on piano, emoting his way through the lyrics then leading the audience in a gospel-flavored singalong on the falsetto hook at the end, slipping into “Adore” for a bit then coming back to “Purple Rain.”

After leaving the stage, he returned for a headbanging, bass-driven cover of the Cars’ “Let’s Go,” which was probably sloppier than a less exciting version would have been. Then, after turning in one of his flashier solos of the night, which is saying a lot, on the Cars song, he addressed the crowd.

“I love you, Arizona,” he said. “But not as much as I love my guitar.” And with that, he led his bandmates in “Guitar,” which totally rocked and featured some serious dual-guitar action with Grantis, who more than held her own in the presence of one of the greatest guitarists in the history of rock and roll on both nights. Of course, with Prince, the genius of the playing is reinforced by the iconic gestures, from the open-mouthed sustain to the “Is-that-a-guitar-rising-out-of-your-crotch-like-the-Washington-Monument-on-male-enhancement-drugs-or-are-you-just-happy-to-see-me?” pose.

The thick fuzz riff of “Plectrum Electrum” was followed by the psychedelic pop of “Fixurelife,” which featured a great raspy vocal with lots of attitude from Prince and more shredding from Grantis, ending in a chant of “Arizona.”

And that was that, perhaps a less fulfilling sendoff than “Alphabet St.” had been the night before but the overall pacing of Wednesday’s show was better, hitting the audience earlier and more often with songs that could inspire singalongs in the casual Prince fan and people who know the words to every track on “Planet Earth” alike.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

This mutherfucker is burning it up.

More than I ever thought he had left in him.

Those shows last year and before have nothing on this LOL Tour. So much regarding energy and inspired performance.

Prince is playing like he actually cares.

A royally rocking affair with Prince

His Royal Highness the Purple One delivers a strong 88-minute concert during San Diego leg of West Coast tour

By Michael James Rocha1 a.m.May 4, 2013

http://www.utsandiego.com...rock-hotel

Rock ’n’ roll royalty — he of the Prince variety — held court in San Diego on Friday night, and he showed why he was king.

Stripped of all the trappings of a stadium-size concert, the diminutive 54-year-old singer-songwriter delivered a big performance during the 8 p.m. show Friday, the first of four over two consecutive nights at the 1,000-capacity Hard Rock Hotel Legends Ballroom.

The cozy setting at Friday’s first concert — the seventh stop on a nine-city West Coast tour — gave the evening a “come and sit awhile” feel, even though the performance was a standing room-general admission show with Prince narrating the night’s storyline as he sang a mix of songs, old and new and a handful of fan favorites.

The 8 p.m. concert didn’t start until 8:38 p.m., and the tardy Prince quickly offered a royal apology to the room, about two-thirds full: “Sorry for the delay, San Diego. I’m going to make it up to you. I promise.”

And proving a royal promise isn’t meant to be broken, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer definitely made it up to his San Diego audience during the 88-minute set, a revved up evening punctuated by some excellent guitar playing by Prince and his accompanying female band, the 3rd Eye Girl trio.

Wearing black pants and a paisley-patterned black coat — a subtle nod, perhaps, to his now-defunct Paisley Park Record label back in Chanhassen, Minn. — Prince kicked off the evening with an exuberant version of “Let’s Go Crazy,” his 1984 hit with his band The Revolution, which formed in 1979 in Minneapolis and disbanded in 1986.

His opening song jump-started a night that focused less on Prince the personality and more on Prince the musician. The venue’s intimacy limited what could be on stage, so what was left were the bare necessities — some guitars, some drums, a keyboard, some lights and a whole lot of chutzpah.

And that’s really all that was needed.

Who knew you could get away with what Prince and his band got away with Friday night? At their best, Prince and his ladies dug deep musically with stunning guitar work, taking turns downstage becoming one with their electric guitars. At their worst, during a couple of instances during the night when the instruments drowned out his voice, it was still pretty darn good music, so you quickly forgave them.

His huge stage presence — yes, even on a small stage, you knew you were in the presence of music royalty — draped the evening in an “I-can’t-believe-he’s-that-close” aura. And perhaps therein lies the magic of this intimate “Live Out Loud” tour, which kicked off April 15 at the 1,144-capacity Vogue Theater in Vancouver. A venue so intimate, you have no other choice but to feel so very privileged to be that close to greatness.

Throughout the evening, Prince offered glimpses of his musical prowess — on the guitar and on the keyboard. His funky “Screwdriver,” released in February of this year, was a mix of ‘60s and ‘70s rock ‘n’ roll, but mixed only the way Prince can.

Early on in the evening — perhaps as a strategic part of his royal apology — he pulled out the big guns with the normally set-closing “Purple Rain.” After nearly 20 minutes of energetic music, Prince sat down at the keyboard at 8:55 p.m. to slow things down. Five minutes later, he began playing the first familiar chords of “Purple Rain” and eased into one of the most memorable moments of the evening: a man, a song and an attentive audience.

Later on, urging his audience to join him in clapping to the beat, he said: “You didn’t think you’d be going to church tonight, did you?”

FOR FANS, A SPECIAL EVENING

Ask concertgoer Monica Proscelle where she thought she’d be going Friday night, and she definitely wouldn’t have told you that she’d be at a Prince concert.

Her husband, Mark, decided to buy tickets around mid-day Friday, and after scoring two tickets, he called his wife and told her they needed to leave their North County home and head to the Gaslamp Quarter around 4 p.m.

Standing in line for what she thought was dinner, Monica Proscelle finally realized she’d been duped — “a pleasant surprise by my lovely husband.”

“The last Prince concert I’ve been to was 20 years ago,” she said while standing a few feet from the stage. “This is special.”

For Steven Ozbun and his friends, being first in line Friday evening had its privileges: They were guaranteed to get the red wristbands awarded to early birds. The red wristbands got them into a special area right in front of the stage.

For Ozbun, 32, Friday night’s concert brought back memories of his first Prince concert when he was 17. He drove 36 hours from San Diego to Minneapolis to attend a Prince concert there. Ozbun, an advertising executive, didn’t have to drive that far to Friday’s concert. He lives downtown.

A diehard Prince fan, Ozbun also had tickets to the second of Saturday’s concerts: “I’m attending the first one and also the last one.”

For his friend, Michael Hubbard of Mission Valley, Friday night’s concert was a special night. First in line Friday, Hubbard looked forward to a great evening with Prince.

What was he most excited about? “Being up front,” he said, smiling.

And sure enough, during the entire night, Hubbard stood within inches of his Royal Purpleness.

Hubbard’s face? All smiles.

AT HIS BEST, A MUSICIAN IN COMMAND

Nearly halfway through the evening, at the keyboard, Prince was a man in control. With the house lights down, he took control of the stage with his keyboard at his fingertips and then uttered the first few words of a 1985 song he originally wrote but was then made famous in 1989 by Sinead O’Connor.

“It’s been seven hours and fifteen days ... “

The audience went wild.

And in those four words, one could sum up how many in the audience felt about Prince on Friday night. Even though Friday night’s set list lacked many of his popular titles, it was easy to forgive Prince for using the intimate setting to try something new.

Some of the songs performed Friday were old songs that had been reworked to the point they were almost unrecognizable. And still, other songs were so unknown, you sometimes wondered, “What song was that?” And then, there were songs so new you probably were hearing them for the first time.

For all that, and for being 38 minutes late, you didn't want to forgive him, but with all that great music, you had no choice but to do so. And the $250-per-ticket price tag? You didn’t really want to forgive him for that, but you go ahead anyway.

It’s Prince after all.

“Too many hits, not enough time,” he said before wrapping up the 8 p.m. concert to prepare for the 11:30 p.m. crowd.

Earlier in the evening, he promised he’d make it up, and he definitely did — and because of that, you wished that there wasn’t a second show that evening so you could get one more encore or two, courtesy of Prince, the king of the evening.

The Midget delivered again.....All the Critics love him in the O.C.....

Prince
City National Grove of Anaheim
May 7, 2013 (Early Show)

When you've been around as long as Prince, you make your own rules. This was evident from the moment people entered the parking lot of the City National Grove of Anaheim and received little paper flyers outlining that there would be no photography or video allowed at the show. Before the Purple One and his band 3rd Eye Girl hit the stage, drummer Hannah Ford reiterated while she and her bandmates didn't mind photos, Prince did and that's what mattered. While most people got the point, some didn't and got booted from the venue. But hey, for the time being, this venue was Prince's world--and we just happened to live in it.

As for the show, The Artist Formerly Known As A Weird Symbol was rockin' and groovin'. Sporting a cropped afro, tight black and white turtleneck, black spandex and high heels, his slightly altered look this time around was indicative of the increased rock flavor added to his sound. Prince's current tour is a throwback to how things were done at the onset of live club shows. There was an early show at 8 p.m. and a late one at 11:30 p.m. Fans who ponied up the $200-plus for the show definitely didn't sound disappointed, especially with reworked versions of hits like set opener "Let's Go Crazy" and "Little Red Corvette." The set was full of newer, lesser-known tracks along with some hits from across hit catalog.

The aforementioned 3rd Eye Girl, the latest all-female incarnation of Prince's backing band, brought out the rocker in him. Many of the tracks were harder, which was different than his last area shows at the Forum, where he was backed by the New Power Generation. While all three members had been part of the rotating New power lineup, this new approach featured crunchier guitar solos and a degree of edginess on songs like the newly released "Screwdriver" that Prince had gotten away from in the past few years. Decked out in a biker chic Native American garb, the onslaught of jaw-dropping guitar solos of Donna Grantis and Ida Nielsen's fuzzy and furious bass skills brought out the true player in Prince. The set stayed crisp throughout the night, and the long bloated solos that were present at the end of his run at The Forum were replaced by tighter jams mixed in with a few quiet, sultry moments. Playing with the gals has reinvigorated Prince's live show.

Was it a bummer not being able to take photos and live Tweet from the event? Absolutely. It took everything we had not broadcast to the world that classics like "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" and "Purple Rain" were being played directly in front of us. However, there was something refreshing about not having a zillion flashes going off and screens lighting up. Prince thrived in this controlled environment. He was relaxed and loose, often times cracking a smile when facing the crowd or when he looked at his band. He's grown into his role as a bandleader and a conductor at the same time, much like the jazz groups he grew up listening to.

A musician like Prince doesn't often play to small rooms like the City National Grove of Anaheim. When he does, it can be magical and borderline surreal even if he doesn't play his greatest hits. Last night, he made other band's songs, like The Cars' "Let's Go" and The Troggs' "Wild Thing" sound as good, if not better than the original versions. Oh, and there was a Nicole Scherzinger sighting. The former Pussycat Dolls frontwoman came out during the second encore to share vocals with Prince on "U Got the Look" after watching from the side of the stage all night.

By the time the two-hour set ended, it was time to clear out the first group of people in order to make way for the line of people that assembled in the parking lot. No matter how the second show went, nothing could top seeing Prince in such a small setting. Even if it never happens again, this Orange County venue with forever have a bit of Purple aura surrounding it.

Critical Bias: I was standing about the length of a baseball bat from Prince. Does it really get any better than that?

The Crowd: People who didn't care about the hefty ticket prices.

Random Notebook Dum id you know the VIP lounge was designed by former Anna Nicole Smith interior decorator Bobby Trendy? We saw Tony Kanal of No Doubt chilling back there!

Prince, the Ultimate Guitar Hero, Indulges his Rock Side

With all-female band 3rd Eye Girl backing him, the Purple One proves -- yet again -- why he might be music's most dynamic live entertainer.

(Tuesday, May 7)

Prince’s history is inextricably linked to the Rolling Stones’ own, thanks to the legendary 1981 shows where the fledgling artist was booed off the L.A. Coliseum stage by Stones fans. Over the past week, Prince and the Stones returned to L.A. with premium-priced tours, but their wholly different philosophies about what it means to give devotees their hundreds of dollars’ worth is an instructive sign of both artists’ times.
OUR EDITOR RECOMMENDS

The Stones seemed to assume that folks willing to pay up to $600 a ticket must be well-heeled, casual fans whose dates would grumble if the band left a single up-tempo classic-rock staple out of their set. Prince made the opposite presumption, taking it on faith that anyone willing to meet his $200 asking price must be a hardcore fan who’d be ticked not to hear new material and obscurities alongside severely rearranged perennials. Both acts proved again why they’re among the dozen most exciting live acts in music history, but only one has any investment in being celebrated for his creative present as well as past.

In 2013, Prince still has the ability to pull surprises on us, and this one’s a doozy: He’s undertaking the first tour of his career that’s truly devoted to rock & roll with a pair of capital R’s. What’s been fascinating and occasionally confounding over the past three decades is how natural and brilliant Prince is as a pure rocker -- especially when it comes to peeling off convincingly Hendrixian solos -- but how that mode has always been a mere trifle to him, one of many in a bag of stylistic tricks that always veered back toward R&B. In 2007, in the single “Guitar,” he bragged, “I love you baby, but not like I love my guitar”… but fans were still left waiting for him to put his money and six-string where his mouth was. Now he’s finally done it, presenting himself as not just a rock moonlighter but full-on Guitar Hero. And it’s as glorious a wall of sound to behold as we always figured it would be.

In short: He’s set aside the sound of records like “Cream” to sound like… Cream.

Prince isn’t even the only featured guitar virtuoso in his new band. His current support crew, 3rd Eye Girl, consists of three women he found on the web or through recommendations and started playing with in January. The quartet’s bare-bones approach is the very opposite of the soul-based, big-band style favored by Prince on other recent tours, but there’s hardly anything minimalist about their turned-up-to-12 racket. And while Prince has had strong female guitarists in his crew before -- perhaps you remember Wendy -- he’s never had an accompanist of either gender before that he let solo as much as this band’s Donna Grantis, who takes almost as many leads as he does and officially qualifies as a shredder.

The other players are drummer Hannah Ford and bassist Ida Neilsen, who got one fuzztone solo in early on that took place high enough on the fretboard that you could have mistaken her for a third guitar player. Prince seems devoted to creating websites and iconography for 3rd Eye Girl, so you can only hope he plans to keep this outfit together for quite a while, notwithstanding our habitual need to hear him stop and start a James Brown-style horn section again someday. The J.B. side of him can wait, now that’s locked into an earsplitting style that would have fit well amid the heavier side of Monterey Pop.

No two sets on his current tour have been remotely the same, though he’s shuffling a lot of the same material. At the May 7 late show, he picked an interesting structure for the set that broke things up by genre. First, he did a solid hour of nothing but his loudest rock material, including a few new songs destined for a projected summer album. Then the first encore consisted of what fans call his “sampler set” -- a 20-minutes-or-so dance-party medley that had Prince basically acting as his own DJ, putting on snippets of the rhythm parts of his biggest hits while his band played along and a couple of dozen partyers danced on stage. For the second and final encore, he retreated to a lower-key R&B mode and brought out his die-for falsetto for a trio of more sensitive ballads, including “Nothing Compares 2 U.” By the end of the 100-minute show, even fans who might have been a little taken aback by the hardcore rock emphasis felt fully serviced.

But it was that first hour of pure rock that was the night’s real revelation. He’s done the very rare all-rock show before, including a short set of heavy stuff for a couple of hundred folks at L.A.’s Conga Room in the mid-2000s. But Prince has certainly never allowed himself to be consumed by the genre the way he is on this tour.

That led to some transformations of his better-known material. “Let’s Go Crazy,” which he’s been opening nearly every show with, was no longer a synthy, spasmatic ‘80s romp, but a medium-tempo blues jam. Ditto for the initially almost unrecognizable “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,” which was actually pitched at a different key up to the last part of the chorus. The minor chords took a little less delight in giving that pregnant girl the brush-off, but it still felt weirdly celebratory, leading into the faster and more unabashedly cocky “Guitar.” A pick from early in his career, “Bambi,” fit in just fine with this Monsters of Rock set, going over a lot better now than it did at the Coliseum in ’81. Maybe the parade of Bond-credit-sequence-style female silhouettes on the rear LED screen helped.

“California, where you from?” he asked at the outset. “I’m from funky rock & roll.” We’re not sure if that’s a place that has an actual passport stamp, but the Grove crowd was certainly glad for the export. Will the excitement translate to the album he’s expected to put out in June or July? Prince has thrilled us on tour before—his in-the-moment-favoring DNA won’t allow him to do anything but—only to put out albums as insular and wan as Lotusflow3r. But if the women of 3rd Eye Girl are playing on the new stuff, there’s not much danger of it seeming hermetically sealed; these gals can definitely take the place of his men, for the foreseeable future.

Dude plays the hits when he wants to....He's not coasting on this tour...This is great to see for an artist that could easily play Purple Rain from start to finish and call it a day...

Prince at the Ogden Theatre day one, 5-12-13 (photos, review)
By Reverb Staff | May 13th, 2013 |

8 p.m. show

By Matt Miller

When the lyrics to Prince’s “Screwdriver” flashed across the stage of the Ogden Theatre on Sunday, “People pay money for the rock and roll,” the phrase rang all too true. Roughly half a million dollars had been dropped collectively to see the immortal artist in a rock club a tenth of the size he could easily sell out, and it was time for him to deliver.

Just before the 8 p.m. showtime, a line wraps around the entire theater. Purple feathers litter the streets along with fans who are a concoction of nervous and excited. Lookalikes of the Purple One mill about, timestamps of the artist in the 1980s whom people had been waiting in some cases their entire lives to see. But the Prince who would take the stage for the earlier of two shows on Sunday wasn’t quite the man anyone expected.

In a rather modest black collared shirt with a small vintage-looking afro, the Prince on Sunday was more ’70s rocker and hardly the immortalized pop, funk and R&B god. Backed by the young three-piece 3rdEyeGirl, Prince stayed away from the hits almost entirely and instead played a set of riff-heavy takes on lesser known songs. There was no “Purple Rain,” no “When Doves Cry,” no “I Would Die 4 U.” In fact the most well-known song he played was “Let’s Go Crazy,” a chunky version he’s been opening up with on this club tour. Devoid of hits, it’s easy to get hung up on this setlist, as many fans vocally shared after the show, but that’s not what this show was about. This show was about devotion.

As the $250 price tag can attest, this Prince show wasn’t for the casual fans who only know and love the hits. Anyone in the crowd mere feet away from the mythical artist himself had already proven their devotion to the church of Prince. The reward for this devotion was a chance to see his enormous presence crammed into a tiny room. And the man was everything fans could expect — comfortable on stage, emotionally connected to every note and still a sex symbol at 54 years old.

Playing almost exclusively the guitar through tracks like “Bambi,” and (fitting for the night), “Guitar,” he barely took a break for lighter songs or to sit at the mostly-unused piano on the right of the stage. In every song he ripped through solo after solo. And though this riff-solo-riff-solo formula became a bit tired, Prince’s showmanship on the guitar was poetry. Here is Prince, a musician with nothing to prove, almost begging for the audience’s respect for him as a guitarist — a talent that can sometimes be overshadowed by his persona.

When he finally settled into a funk groove late into the night — a cover of “Play that Funky Music White Boy” — the audience lit up with some of the dancing it had anticipated. Unfortunately it was Prince’s last song in a set that clocked in at less than two hours. As fans began to file out, some visibly and vocally angry, others in ecstasy, the night had clearly become a test to some of his most die-hard fans. How well do you know my catalogue? How much are you willing to pay? How much will you beg for a hit? All are questions Prince seemed to be asking, and all posed during a show that only a lucky few will be talking about for years to come.
11:30 p.m. show

------------

By Ricardo Baca

11:30 show...

The way he looks so damn comfortable on stage. His unquestionable style and inimitable confidence. The trademark glitch between his deliberately round baritone and his gimme-more falsetto.

Prince’s late-night show at the Ogden Theatre on Sunday was a stunner. More rock than funk, more quirky than familiar, the brief 90-minute set trended toward album tracks and B-sides as opposed to the artist’s many ubiquitous hits. The audience didn’t seem to mind the deep grooves, the extended solos and the quick whiplash of a concert; They came, they danced, they sang along and they spilled out on East Colfax Avenue at 1:05 a.m. as a slap-happy mess.

Prince will play two more shows on Monday, at 8 and 11:30 p.m.

It was no mistake that Prince’s silhouette echoed that of a young Lenny Kravitz-Jimi Hendrix hybrid, with a slender, asymmetrical shirt hanging over pants, topped with sunglasses and a combed-out afro. This rock show had its R&B and funk and even a few ballads, but it was still a rock show – guitars, bass and a drum kit with two high, metal-ready crash cymbals.

Mind you, there was no “Purple Rain,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Raspberry Beret,” “7” or “U Got the Look.” And that was O.K.

The late-show began with a slinked-out take on “Let’s Go Crazy,” a sexy arrangement that showcased each dynamic of the four-piece. Prince threw down his new “Screw Driver” with retro graphics, and he put down his electric guitar for a noodly instrumental featuring him on the keys. (It worked because it was Prince; If it were anybody else …)

He covered part of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You,” and he mashed-up Tommy James’ “Crimson and Clover” with the Troggs’ “Wild Thing.” Later on, he basically covered himself in a tease of a medley that left the crowd on edge. He hinted at the whimsical hit “Pop Life” with a few measures, and then he flirted with the high-heeled intro to “Darling Nikki.” But no more than a few fleeting moments. How about the first verse of “I Would Die 4 U”? He rocked that, too. And then he said, “What a night, huh?” and left the stage.

It was as exciting as it was frustrating. But what’s worse: Avoiding those songs altogether or giving the audience a little taste, acknowledging that, yes, he did those jams too.

The late show’s highlights had Prince testing his still-legit upper register with a haunting “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore?” and alternating lines with the sold-out audience on “When Doves Cry.” It’s not everyday you’re invited to sing a duet with Prince on one of his most recognized, loved, valued songs, but he asked for it, and hours later, we’re still singing: “Maybe I’m just like my father, too bold.”

Much has been made about the concerts’ $250 ticket prices, and rightfully so. That’s a lot of money. Was this 90-minute set worth all that cash?

Without question. The draw here is Prince in a room 1/10 the size he normally plays, right? And his powerful sway translated so vibrantly in the tiny Ogden that it was impossible to not glimmer in his glow.

Watching him wield that guitar, strike a pose, hit that note – all so seemingly effortlessly – is a moving experience, one that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

hopefully 2nd comes soon as seeing setlists think I got the better one with the late show, altho Dolphin woulda been cool

Monday's shows looked good as well and even tho I wasn't too disappointed, the Purple Rain on piano would have been great and if he closed with it doubt he would have got as much grumblings from casual fans that came for hits.

I had no complaints, cant think of a living person with better stage presence, tv appearances and leaked audio don't do the band justice, the lighting and special effects all were amazing. Just the sillouette behind the keys of him and his fro singing was f'n awesome. lol

I have never seen Prince.

Some years ago, he was in Chicago and an OKP posted here that he was gonna hit City Winery after his show.

She basically gave me the heads up and allowed me to cop a couple of tix.

took my girl there for dinner and sprung the surprise on her. she'd seen him a few times, but still, its fucking prince.

anyway, 9pm turns to 10 and 11, and midnight.

folks are getting restless. my girl was under the weather to start with. it was a sunday night, which meant I had to be up at 5:30 ,the next morning.

I think I bailed at about 1am. sold tix for face value and went home.

I heard he got on stage about 30 minutes later. at the time I was like "fuck prince's ol lauren hill ass"

but now, i regret it....deeply

I can relate to this, and I am so bitter about it. I almost saw Prince in NYC when I lived there. My funds were limited and I decided against going because I was trying to be responsible.

*Shakes fist*

I am trying to hurry up and see Stevie Wonder now...

When he was "late" it was usually for the aftershows and the more VIP or exclusive events, not the straight-up concerts --- and part of the whole thing with those gigs was that you never knew what the story would be: would he play at all? would he play a short set? would he play for 3 hours? It was a gamble and you knew that going in.

I saw him numerous times for standard concerts and I don't think he hit the stage especially late any of those times. For the official shows, he always approached them professionally.

(I'm speaking here about his later career - I have no idea how punctuality and whatnot back in the 80s or early 90s. And I'm happy to be corrected, just going off my own general impression via my experience and talking with others.)

yeah, ive seen him on a bunch of 'official' shows and for those he was pretty much always on time / professional**. Its the 'unofficial' aftershows where ya never knew if/when/what might or might-not happen....but like you said, ya kinda knew that going in. i remember it was 'rumored' that he was gonna hit this club in my town after an official show....we went, he didnt....thats just part of the deal. few years later, a similar rumor about a different club, we didnt go, he did...go figure.

**the ONE time that Ol' P let me down....and its a biggie....THE Purple Rain Tour....i had camped out in front of the coliseum the night before, ended up getting 3rd row seats....3rd row at THE Purple Rain tour at he HEIGHT of the worldwide purple craze.....flash forward....the Purple Rain Tour show in our town gets rescheduled once, and rescheduled again....and ultimately, gets cancelled....it never came, i never saw it (in person)....that one stung for minute lol. Sure woulda been cool to have been 'in the room where it happened' at the PEAK of the 'purple haze' the world was in in 84/85...

random but after he passed *this* was the song I heard and I was like WOW he's really dead. (The Greatest Love of All for Whitney. Maybe Tomorrow for Michael)

I know people either love or hate his 90s output but I remember this song fondly, and this performance is special for some reason
