I've had my doubts about this band, but this is pretty great. He'd better bring this show to Toronto!

THIS is the Prince show I want to see. I've seen Prince about 6 or 7 times. All since '97 and I get tired of the "hits" set lists. I fully understand why he does them. Cause it's what the people want. He plays these 20,000 seat arena shows and he has to appease the casual fans. But I've wanted him to do a show with his lesser known songs for the longest.

I think in 2013, he's making a concerted effort to reach out to his hardcore fans. I don't know how much that makes up for all those stupid fan clubs where people were gypped over and over again. But this year he's giving us new songs and remixes in an "easy" to download manner. Who woulda thunk he would ever do that. And now he's doing a show strictly for the diehards. At first I questioned the reasonsing behind $250 shows, but now I see why. It's the weed out the hardcore fans from the casual ones. Casual ones aren't going to pay $250 for Prince. So he has shows only the hardcore will got to playing a setlist only the hardcore would enjoy. Cause if he played this setlist with $75 tickets, all those casual fans would call the show wack because he didn't play "Kiss". Too bad I don't have $250. But I'm sure I'll be able to find the audio somewhere.

Setlist from drfunkenberry.com:

EARLY SHOW
Let’s Go Crazy
Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?
Endorphinmachine
Screwdriver
She’s Always In My Hair
Liathach
I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man
Guitar
Plectrum Electrum
FixUrLifeUp
I Like It There
When We’re Dancing Close and Slow
Bambi
2 Young 2 Dare
Cause and Effect
1st Encore:
Let’s Go
Crimson and Clover/ Wild Thing
2nd Encore:
Sign ‘o’ the Times

LATE SHOW
Ain’t Gon’ Miss U (not 100% on the title but it was the same song that opened both shows on the 15th)
Let’s Go Crazy
Endorphinmachine
Screwdriver
She’s Always In My Hair
Liathach
I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man
Guitar
Let’s Go
Crimson and Clover/ Wild Thing
Plectrum Electrum
FixUrLifeUp
I Like It There
When We’re Dancing Close and Slow
Bambi

I'm trying not to get my expectations up...but I'm a big fan of the DNA nightclub.

They used to post simulcast shows on their website...doubt that's going down now.
But it was cool to be at home having a smokefest listening to the opening act THEN...heading out at the end of their set and walking into the club 3 minutes before (in this case Bilal's) show started.

They also would host a rip of the show for a minute.

Talk about a concert experience.

IF that schitt was what's going down it be a really beautiful night.

In response to Reply # 17

and don't me call Prince out on his jive and they really reach the extra large tissue box.

Prince must have lost a Pool game or something to Lenny Kravitz to be reaching that kinda low. i mean its comical and them Becky's are a step behind what he is playing and you can hear it loud and clear.

these grooves because they aren't songs are best saved for the vault.

Prince is smart for selling them wack cuts for 88 cents because at 8.88 somebody might toss a disc at his wig and knock it off on first toss.

this mess is comical to me

In response to Reply # 12

Prince ain't had a hit in 20 years, we get it but neither has nearly any other legendary artist his age or older

He still gets people to turn out for his shows and puts on a good live show, casual fans come for the hits as expected of any artist who had hits back in the day.

Should he still be making new music? Its his choice, he enjoys making music even if it ain't nearly the quality it was in his prime and can't really hate him for that. Zappa made a shit ton of music and I ain't heard nearly any of it but don't hate him for it.

and it's been completely reworked on the road already.

I can't wait to hear what it sounds like the first weekend of May.

However, much like D didn't quite seem to understand on his cover, the whole essence of this song is *that riff*.

It's one of the best true riff-based joints he's ever done.

Without it, the song is just a cool little vamp.

With it (when his tone is deeper w/less of a screechy/trebly top part) the song transforms into a monster that belongs on the top shelf of his cuts.

Still, I'm glad he's brought it back out & pray that it will show up in any incarnation at the Hard Rock SD shows in a few weeks.

I'm bringing a group of folks that really don't know what The Midget is truly all about & have likely never heard this song before but can already see it slaying them.

I want a moment where they recognize it, enjoy the rest of the joint & then talk some shit immediately afterwards before the next one starts.

From all reports, these two Seattle gigs were pretty epic...Below is the first show...

Sign o the times
Lets go crazy
Endorphin machine
Screwdriver
She's always in my hair
Icnttpoym
Guitar
Plectrum
Fixurlifeup
I like it there
When we're dancing
Bambi
2 young 2 dare
Cause and effect

Encore

Lets go
Crimson and clover
Dreamer

He was heavy on the cowbell on some songs before launching into solos on "Bambi" ect...

Tweets from novice fans are saying P was in a zone on the guitar...No wanking...just straight ahead shreding....He even allowed photos to be taken (joked about it)...And the gig before that he actually crowd surfed....What's wrong with this guy? lol
---

The second show Prince pulled out "Let's Work"...and he even did a longer sampler set (more funk-rock than just funk)...He jumped on the piano and back on the guitar...These gigs seem to be dream shows for the fans...

Trolls unite...

U not dumb, homie....When superstar acts like Prince do the small club gigs ticket prices are usually high...

When he does those stadium, arena, festival gigs he usually lowers ticket prices to under $35 bucks for a a good number of those higher up seats...As for the set list, dude is rocking out on the ax, so it's def. not for u...And I get that...

In other words, stop trolling and take your medicine...U already know I ain't with all this silly peanut gallery shit...lol...I have side-stepped u for a reason in this thread...U can't win against professional Prince trolls....So I'm going to keep my distance on this one...

he still playing hits in some form or capacity it ain't like he is doing the news setlist, madhouse 16&24 or his now selling mid 90's stuff.

turkey doing a hits medley there and knows he has to and over charging.

stuck with a corny band and still acting like he counts and he pushing to cash in on the purple Rain 30 anniversary. everybody can see through this turkey.

he is so predictable and watch next year he will either tease with his vault or make an album with some corny played out 30 year old grooves.

Grandpa Prince strikes again watch out!!

This will be the only real response u get from me on this subject...Dude is playing a majority of obscure shit and new material...When he pulls out the hits it's usually the secondary hits like "ICNTTPOYM"....Or a TOTAL re-working of "Let's Go Crazy" that sounds nothing like the original...

Basically, he's doing mostly NEW guitar-driven material (the show has about 6 to 7 new songs in the set list, not exactly a greatest hits gig) obscure shit ("Dolphin") and deep album cuts ("Forever In My Life") and maybe one cover ("Let's Go"...or the obscure "Stratus")...

P saves a couple of fan favorites like "Let's Work" and a shocking super hit number like "Doves" (again, a rarity)...for SNIPPETS during a sampler set...Dude even pulled out "Shockedelica"...another obscure joint...) for the encores.....

Hell, the critic even pointed to the fact that dude is killing it without having to pull out the big guns during the initial sets...

*oh yeah...he's doing a lot of 90s shit too Maxx..."I Like It There," "Dolphin"...P's even doing a shit load of '00 songs ("Colonized Mind," "Dreamer" ect....)*

If you don't like the music, I get that...We will agree to disagree on that because that;s all about what u personally dig, and I respect that...

But you don't have to pull shit out of your ass that's not even factually accurate...

Murph,

The dude is going to pull whatever he can out of his butt because he hates the love that Prince gets from the people.

Prince is doing a show for the hardcore fans and let us just enjoy this while Maxxx hates every moment of it and attempts to ruin this for us.

Maxxx, come on man - just stop and let us enjoy coming to okayplayer and Prince's music.

i've heard the re workings and its nothing special. them chicks are just hired hands, it ain't like he got the donnas or the dixie chicks behind him.

if he wants to impress get some real talent behind him and give the people the good stuff and not that cornball.

I've been following the guy pretty closely for a long time now and I've never ever heard him even joke about his 80s material being his best stuff as far as he's concerned.

Fortunately, he still believes in his most recent material and continues to look forward and that's something real artists do. Maxxx, if Prince were just a corporate scum bag artist than you'd have something to say but the idea of an artist looking forward escapes you.

Anyways, post the proof that Prince said his best stuff was his material from the 80s.

and back in 09 at some place overseas he said around the 2 plus minute mark about being at his best in the 80's. its either on youtube or daily motion however he was performing live and he said that and its common sense because Prince performing a show or a tour and not having half of his show from the 80's equals folks demanding there money back.

Prince ain't packing places off his 70's, 90's,00's till now music and you can quote me on that.

he knows it as well he was a 80's thing.

I say bull - some place overseas? Right around the two minute mark? This is awesome buddy.

I can give you a hundred other examples of Prince really believing in his new material...

As far as Prince being an 80s thing, well you're right - as a commercial act, the 80s has Prince's print all over it. In fact, far more than any other artist. However, and again I hope I'm communicating clearly, as an artist, the guy continues to seek new sounds and I admire that about him.

This guy is an artist that balances his need to create art all while filling his need for people to scream his name.

Prince Rocks Seattle on His US Tour Opener

http://www.prefixmag.com/...ner/73468/

At the mere thought of seeing Prince live, what expectations would you have? You might expect him to be aloof and elusive, as suggested by his recent crusade against illicit videos and photos, and his stringent no photo policy. Or maybe you’d think the spotlight would be on Prince and his catalogue of hit songs, as denoted by his projected character and explicitly labeled on the venue’s marquee. The reality? Take all of these expectations and throw them out the door (except perhaps the elusive part).

Last night at the Showbox at the Market, Prince and his backing band, 3rd Eye Girl, played their first two US shows back to back, and the only word that came to mind throughout the show was “WOW.” Not only did the show start promptly on time, but the majority of the show displayed an energetic Prince who was eager to push the spotlight not just on himself, but on his backing band and the audience itself. Prince kicked off his second show of the night with “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Endorphinmachine,” before addressing the crowd and taking a jab at some of the newer pop stars. “Ready for some lip syncing? Everyone else is doing it,” he said before launching into “Screwdriver,” with the lyrics projected on stage’s screen.

After the explosive wave of rock ‘n’ roll jams concluding with “She’s Always in My Hair,” the blinding strobes suddenly went off and the mood shifted dramatically. The lights went off, and a melodic, instrumental version of “Liathach” was played as a seeming break in the set; most of us assumed Prince had left the stage until it was later revealed that he was performing the song on a keyboard in the back, unlit corner of the stage. This was more or less how the rest of the night played out: a few rock heavy songs full of electric guitar shredding, funk band jamming, and bright lights beaming, interjected with slower ballads performed by Prince in almost total darkness. There was particular rhythm or flow to the night’s set, which included more songs such as “Plectrum Electrum,” “FixUrLifeUp,” “Cause and Effect,” and “2 Young 2 Dare;” the night’s agenda was at the complete discretion of Prince.

Despite plenty of rock star poses and striking guitar solos, Prince was generous with the spotlight. Lots of attention was given to 3rd Eye Girl, even introducing them individually during his opening song and identifying himself as a part of the band. The all-female backing band consisted of Donna Grantis on guitar, Ida Nielson on bass, and Hannah Ford on drums; the trio definitely left their mark with Grantis’ guitar shredding duels with Prince making for impressive displays of musicianship between songs. Said Prince towards the end of the show, “for a few months now, we’ve been doing this in Minneapolis, just jamming like a garage band. We are 3rd Eye Girl. My name is Prince.”

Towards the end of the solid hour-long set, another performer was brought on stage: a guy named Josh who played the cowbell. “Will Ferrell was his teacher,” Prince joked. As Prince began saying his goodbyes (I counted at least 7 throughout the night), puzzlement filled the air. How could the show be over without “Purple Rain,” “1999,” or any other iconic Prince songs?

Of course, Prince had encores, two to be exact. And while he didn’t keep us waiting to get the show started, he took his sweet time between encores. The first encore was “Let’s Work” and “U Got the Look,” made highly interactive by Prince and Mr. Cowbell, who pulled four lucky front row girls up on stage to dance. After another drawn out round of goodbyes and long wait, encore number two was what we had all been waiting for: a DJ sampler set of (some) of Prince’s greatest hits including “When the Doves Cry,” “Nasty Girl,” “Pop Life,” “I Would Die for You,” and “Housequake.” Interestingly, Prince remained elusive during this last encore, DJing little snippets of his hits in the shadowed corner of the stage, letting Third Eye Girl dance it up in the spotlight. The last set was much like the rest of the night: a tease that left you drooling and hoping for more.

Prince plays another show in Seattle tonight, followed by select West coast dates through May 13.

In response to Reply # 0

Prince, his guitar, and a new band, 3rd Eye Girl, hit the Roseland Theater

http://www.oregonlive.com...eland.html

Ida Nielsen got the call in 2010 while she was playing a festival in Europe. It came from Prince's manager. Prince had seen some online videos of Nielsen playing bass and he wanted her to come to Minnesota and jam.

Drummer Hannah Ford got an email last year. Same deal. Ford remembers the message saying, "We've come across your videos and we would like to know if you would audition for our new project." At first, she knew only that it was a major artist. Only later was Prince's name used, at which point Ford says she ran around her church like she'd lost her mind.

Not long after, Ford says, Prince asked her and her husband to be on the lookout for a female guitar player, so they hit the Web and found Donna Grantis.

That's how 3rd Eye Girl, the band Prince will bring with him Sunday for two sold-out Roseland Theater shows, came to be, and their story is illustrative of Prince at 54.

He's been around long enough (his debut came out in 1978), and chased so many muses, that while no one likes everything he's done, everyone likes something he's done. And if you don't, well, you don't like fun things? Why don't you like fun things?

Over the decades he's been sex in high heels -- and religiously restrained. He's played all his hits -- and none of his hits -- changed his name to a symbol, avoided the spotlight, and hosted the best halftime the Super Bowl, one of the biggest events in the world, will ever witness.

Prince -- who just three years ago released a record ("20Ten") via print newspaper in London and told that newspaper, the Mirror, that the Internet is dead. That same Prince is one of the few people in the world who can make that same perpetually cranky Internet behave on his terms.

Earlier this month, his people filed a copyright complaint and had a number of six-second videos removed from Twitter's new Vine app. His people keep a close enough watch on YouTube that the first page of a search for "Prince" returns three hits for the '90s sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Three results are Prince doing Prince songs. The top search result is Prince on "The View."

Online isn't necessarily his favorite thing. But he's Prince, so of course he'd recruit online, and when it came time to start rolling out new music, he rolled out from a mysterious-at-the-time character on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook called 3rd Eye Girl.

Blessed is this rock star, for he remains devilishly entertaining.

Consider the rest of the quartet that broke out to massive stardom in the 1980s. Michael Jackson went tragically off the rails. Madonna ran out of re-inventions and was last seen (last week) exchanging words in the press with the president of Malawi. Bruce Springsteen doubled down on the all-American iconography of "Born In the U.S.A."

Prince just plays music. Lots of music. All-the-time music. Funk. Blues. Soul. Rock. Jazz. Hip-hop. Whatever and whenever and often into the earliest morning hours.

In separate interviews last week, the members of 3rd Eye Girl described the last three months as something like a rock fantasy camp, 12 hours a day of jamming, rehearsing, recording and preparing for this tour, which will feature early and late shows each night.

They sounded excited to be playing music with Prince.

"As a guitar player, to hear him rock and do his thing," Grantis says. "I feel like I've got front row seats every day to hear some of the greatest playing of all time."

Guitar?

"He's definitely going to be playing the guitar," Nielsen says.

"A ton of guitar," Grantis says.

Guitar!

It's another paradox of Prince that he can be one of the world's all-time-great guitarists, and sometimes barely touch the guitar. Prince playing guitar is exciting and possibly worth the high price of admission by itself (Roseland tickets started at $175).

Backing up the band's words is the material that's been teased for this tour and (presumably) Prince's next album, (presumably) titled "Plectrum Electrum."

"Screwdriver" is a slinky rocker. They released rehearsal audio of a slow-charging, guitar-stomping version of his hit "Let's Go Crazy."

There's hollering, and laughter and a whole lot of sound. Grantis says she's bringing 20 effects pedals and eight amps on tour.

"It's going to be pleasant," Ford says, laughing. "I guess pleasantly loud, and feedback-y and crazy. It'll be a pleasant show."

So pleasant, she suggests leaving your phone in your car. You won't need it. The video you're taking won't stay online long anyway.

So you watched the full show of THIS tour? Really? "Seems to be" and "looking forward to" doesn't sound like someone that has watched a full show...

And on the real, if you had seen a full show I already know how u get down, dog...U would either give a glowing review or shit on it, with details...

But really, it's all good...U know I don't into it with u like that because u usually keep it real when it comes to P...

But there's a difference between keeping it real and making up shit...

Just saying....

that garbage is a lie because Prince fell off worse then them all.

lets see this cat put out 2 times more stuff from 90 til now and he been a Lounge Greatest hits Liberace act for the better part of 15 years.

everybody knows he is going to do old songs, covers and a sample set for a cat who always yells real music by real musicians. whatever turkey.

Michael Jackson still had 50 plus dates sold out remember that and this cat hadn't toured in a decade. let Prince go away for 10 years and it would do wonders.

MJ still made quality music and was doing his thing in the 90's onward.

Madonna left Prince behind back in the 80's she has kept on making music, touring etc.. so Prince ain't seeing Madonna and I ain't even feeling Madonna since the mid 90's however she left him in the dust long ago.

Bruce Springsteen not even a fan and this cat does everything that Prince wishes he could with how he tours non stop plays live all the way through, does B Side tours and rare things.

Prince of the acts of the 80's is a lounge act and riding off of that. Prince didn't evolve what so ever from the 80's at all.

Springsteen, Madonna have done modern tours period.

i already told you New Edition puts on a better show than prince right now.

Prince been a oldies but goodies act for 20 years

considering that Bruce followed Born in the USA with this album:

http://images.coveralia.com/audio/b/Bruce_Springsteen-Tunnel_Of_Love-Frontal.jpg

But then I decided not to question it... that article is full of enough purple-drooled fanboy bullshit that to start unraveling it just sucks one into a love symbol-shaped wormhole.

I agree, when it came to Springsteen...

The Bruce dig in that write-up was very over the top and factually wrong....I mean, the Ghost & Tom Joad was so far removed from Born In The US...Dude had already buried that persona before picking it back up in the '00s...Hell his divorce album after Born was a curve pitch...That was a brave effort....

But the rest? Pretty spot on...MJ succumbed to the leeches and the unreasonable expectations (he shouldn't have never attempted to do those gigs...The people around him never gave a fuck about Mike...Damn shame...)...And Madonna? Man, that ether was on point...She's still a touring machine...But 'ol girl has become a spoof of her own making...

Talking about the fact that she's recently had some public disputes with some other parties in her personal life? and what exactly does that have to do with her music or her career? Prince hasn't had personal problems to deal with in the public glare too?

Does Madonna still tour? Yes. Does she still record? Yes. Is she still paid? Yes. In fact, just last week Forbes declared her the first American musician to hit billionaire status (or something).

So I really need to know how you think it's "on point ether" to try to brand her a failure by citing the fact that the president of a postage-stamp republic most Americans could not even locate on the map wrote an unkind letter to her.

Personal problems?

No...the point that Madge was lambasted by everyone and Malawi officials for trying to bully them for special treatment during a visit...The fact that she was clowned for writing a letter to the Malawi President which included non-factual points and misspellings (that was NO biggie...Just funny as all hell...)

None of this ^^^^^ had anything to do with personal problems...It just shows the hubris of someone who came from Detroit and now has a British accent...IE...she has become a spoof...a caricature of herself...

And that's when she's not chasing the latest hot thing to stay relevant (Wayne, Minaj, MIA, ect....)....

But hey...she is laughing all the way to the bank, right? No failure, shit...Just laugh inducing, clown worthy shit...

U seem to be mixing things up Captain Contrarian (jokes homie...)...

No one branded her a failure...That's your words...Hell, not even the writer branded Madge a failure...So I have no idea where u got that from, homie...

The point of that paragraph was that Prince seems to be on some "the music monster ate me" shit....Meaning, for all his weird, Internet stalking, assholia, the Midget has shown himself in recent years to be a straight no chaser dude who you could imagine would be content playing in a garage somewhere in Detroit...

He seems to be devoid of that extra shit...He's like a bluesman in that way...Maybe that's why he's so fucking nuts...Who knows? But the shit is refreshing to see such a big star be on some simple, "I play because I'm a musician" shit...Everything else that comes along with that (fame, money, adulation) is just gravy....

Again...u r mixing things up...I'm about the most critical Prince fan on this board....When dude is fucking up, I'm there to say it...When he released that bullshit "R&R Affair" trash, I spoke the truth on it...Ect, ect...

What I'm talking about is this latest Prince tour...Whether dude is charging $100 to $300 is par for the course when it comes to the fact that dude is playing in a small venue and he usually has pretty low ticket prices...

My overall point is it's refreshing to see such a big star be all about the music...He could be playing "Purple Rain" 100 times in a row, but he's not resting on that...He's not stalking Minaj to get some type of cred with the kiddies...He's just seems to be ablut that music whether he's in a club or a stadium....

If that's over-praising Prince or projecting some type of fantasy on him then you really need to go to the org to see some real Purple Kool-Aid sipping...

I'm not on it like that...At all....

Plus, I just like making Maxx mad...lol

And u already know, u my dude....Stay positive and peace, dog....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Dance, Music, Sex, Romance
Nothing Compares 2 Prince
by Ned Lannamann

http://www.portlandmercur...id=9078424

IT'S HAPPENING. It's really happening.

The grumbling of a few—over the unsurprisingly high ticket prices, naturally—quickly receded, leaving the rest of us to bask in the phenomenal news: Yes, Prince is coming to Portland. Yes, Prince is playing two shows, including a late set that probably won't kick off until after midnight. Yes, Prince is fronting a pared-down, all-female trio called 3rdEyeGirl, ripping out heavy fuzz-rock jams like "Bambi," a shredder that appeared on Prince's 1979 self-titled album. And YES, Prince is playing a venue that has a smaller capacity than Minneapolis' First Avenue, the club where the infamous live scenes in Purple Rain were shot.

For naysayers, it's easy to focus on Prince's idiosyncratic quirks: that overtly, femininely sexual persona. That diminutive stature. The odd, shocking marriage of religion and sex in his lyrics. The lost years when he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol in protest against his record company.

But none of this matters when you listen to his four perfect albums: 1980's Dirty Mind, 1982's 1999, 1984's Purple Rain, and 1987's Sign o' the Times—not to mention all the just-as-perfect singles: "I Wanna Be Your Lover," "Controversy," "Raspberry Beret," "Kiss," "Cream," "Sexy MF," "P Control." Prince redefined funk by adding synths and Linn drums; he redefined R&B by making it blatantly, juicily pornographic. He redefined rock simply by being better at it than everyone else, and he redefined pop by effortlessly making all of his sex-hungry, art-damaged weirdness sound contagiously good. What David Bowie was to the '70s, Prince was to the '80s—a chameleonic songwriter and performer, prolifically turning out platters of inventive, strange, iconic pop that busted through genre demarcations, allowing in their wake no room for vacuous imitators, but plenty of inspiration to go around. When Prince had the world's ear (1982-1989, roughly), the global music conversation was better directly because of him.

So what keeps this tour from being a greatest-hits retread? (Not that there would be anything wrong with a set of Prince's best-known songs.) In a telephone interview, 3rdEyeGirl guitarist Donna Grantis told me, "It's been a long time since Prince has really built a show from scratch. His previous shows were more centered around the greatest hits, whereas this 3rdEyeGirl show is like a darker, more stripped down, rock 'n' roll outfit. We'll be playing some songs that have never been heard live before, but have been part of Prince's catalog for years."

Grantis, a well-established guitarist with a long résumé of jazz, rock, and fusion under her belt, was asked to come to one of Prince's jam sessions after 3rdEyeGirl drummer Hannah Ford saw her shred on YouTube. She's understandably giddy about playing next to Prince—who's no slouch on the guitar himself. "It's mind-blowing and awesome and so inspiring," she says. "I feel like I have front-row tickets to witness some of the most phenomenal guitar playing of all time." She adds that the live show will be very freeform and improvisatory, playing to Prince's strengths as a "master bandleader" as well as allowing Grantis, Ford, and bassist Ida Nielsen show their chops.

Of course, Prince's chops will be front and center, Grantis says: "For anyone who has really wanted to hear Prince just wail on guitar, this is the tour to check out."

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Prince at the Roseland Theater on Sunday, pretty amazing: Concert

It is an electric word, life.

I’m just going to toss this out. It’s a theory. Nothing more than that. And it's a theory written at 2:05 a.m. by a man in desperate need of a guitar store.

To be clear: further research is needed, and encouraged.

But what if -- and again, just a theory -- what if Prince is really the Higgs boson particle?

What if he’s responsible for all of life, a physics problem we can enjoy in concert but not solve until the day they build a 17-mile Large Hardron Collider under Switzerland with the express purpose of figuring out Prince?

Because it’s now 2:06 a.m., and it’s been about an hour since Prince finished the second of two sold-out Roseland Theater shows and good Lord. Really? You can get away with that? What he and his band, 3rd Eye Girl, did? That’s legal? Like, without a lobbying effort or anything?

On a Sunday night no less?

Let’s wind back that clock to a little after 10 p.m. I was at Huber’s drinking things with caffeine in them because the late show started at 11:30 and that sounded (and felt) late.

My wife and a friend came in from the 8 p.m. Prince show. The were floating, all forward momentum powered by smiles and good vibes and talk of “Purple Rain” in the encore. The Roseland, they said, had been painted purple inside.

It needed a new coat of paint, anyway.

They giggled. They are not prone to giggling. They are grownups. But they giggled nonetheless. They sounded as giddy as Prince’s band, and Prince’s band sounded awfully giddy when I talked to them a few weeks ago.

“It’ll be a pleasant show,” is what drummer Hannah Ford said, and by pleasant she meant loud as hell, drenched in fuzz and feedback and Prince was going to play a lot of guitar.

A little after 11:30 on Sunday night, and the house lights dropped and Prince strolled to the center mic, arms stretched -- until he turned, stripped his coat off and the whole joint exploded with a noise you don’t generally hear in Portland on a Sunday night.

Any night, really.

They opened with the exuberant stomp of a re-worked version of “Let’s Go Crazy” that first worked its way into the world a few weeks ago when rehearsal audio was released to the Internet.

And time stopped.

You want to know how Prince gets to be 54 years old and still move like it's 1984 and we're in Minneapolis? It's because he stops time. He breaks clocks. That's the only possible answer, and that's why we need physicists.

He and his band took the stage and it wasn’t 11-whatever on a Sunday night and it was every favorite night in college, and those first furtive, clumsy gropes at adolescent freedom. It was all youth and energy and rock and roll's original promise.

It did not matter what time it was, because there was nothing but lights, and smoke and volume, and this stayed true until after 1 a.m., and it held despite the guy barely touching his hits.

He brought out Portland’s Liv Warfield twice. She’s part of his big band, and she was fierce, because that’s Liv Warfield.

Prince and 3rd Eye Girl ripped, and pranced, and mugged and, late in the set, dropped into a cover of Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music.”

They tore into new songs like “Plectrum Electrum” and “Screwdriver.” He cut it up with playful blues. His guitar face is better than any other guitar face ever.

They closed with “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,” one of two hits in the set, if you want to go that far.

Now it’s 2:33 a.m., and I guess if I’m being honest, I envy my wife a little for getting “Purple Rain,” but no one lost Sunday night.

By way of age, and period of commercial prosperity, Prince should be a legacy act. There was nothing once upon a time about what he and his band did Sunday night. It was present. It was in that moment. It was now. It was timeless, and elemental, and electric, and alive.

I don't like the new version of "Let's go Crazy..." It drags too much...I like the reworking of "Always In My Hair'....the groove is heavy...

I like the production and sound of "FixYoLifeUp"...But the lyrics are a bit too preachy...Not a bad effort though...And miles and miles better than that first version of "R&R Love Affair"....That shit was boring as all hell..

And I fucks with "Screwdriver"...He's killer at that pop rock shit...

Damn...he's turning that shit up to 11 for the West Coast gigs....P mixing the new music with his old music and recent joints from the '00s...And again, he plays Purple Rain at one show and doesn't at the other...No 1999, Little Red Corvette, or Kiss, ect...Dude is pretty fucking bold...lol....I dig it....Still don't like the new version of "Let's Go Crazy," but maybe it sounds better live in person...He saves the "hits" for the sampler set and he doesn't even coast on the whole song...And then dude plays "Screams of Passion!!!" shiiiiit....And P even did a tribute to Richie Havens (classy)

But on the real, this is how you do it as a veteran act...Save the mega hits for the stadium/arena gigs and give it raw to the fans at the smaller gigs...I hope P comes to NYC...I gotta see this gig...

Review of the gig....

Review: Prince royally rocks San Francisco

By Jim Harrington
jharrington@bayareanewsgroup.com

http://www.mercurynews.co...-francisco

Prince was king.

His Royal Purpleness delivered in utterly regal fashion during his 8 p.m. concert Tuesday, the first of four shows performed over two consecutive nights at the 800-capacity DNA Lounge in San Francisco.

It was an awesome treat to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer perform in such an intimate venue -- well, at least it was when you could actually see him. For much of the night, many fans simply had to trust their ears to know it was Prince onstage, since trying to get a view of the vocalist-guitarist was tricky through the unbelievably packed crowd.

Yes, there is a downside to seeing a megastar in a club instead of an arena. Sightlines were poor, especially from the back of the venue, and there seemed to be a higher percentage of tall people in the crowd than what you'll find on the court at an NBA game.

Yet, all of that was greatly outweighed by the fact that we were in such close presence to greatness.

And Prince was certainly great during this roughly two-hour set.

Backed by his all-female 3rd Eye Girl band, Prince was in the mood to party and his exuberance for the music was even more important than the specific songs that populated the set list. He poured his heart, and plenty of electric guitar, into everything he played, which ranged from deep cuts to new material to longtime fan favorites.

He opened the show by paying tribute to one of rock's recently fallen heroes.

"Rest in peace Richie
Havens," Prince said in reference to the Woodstock vet, who died on Monday.

Prince later underscored that sentiment by performing an achingly emotional version of "Motherless Child," the spiritual that Havens incorporated into the signature song "Freedom" (prominently featured in the "Woodstock" film).

He definitely delivered the funk, heaping on a heavy dose early on with "Screwdriver," but mainly stuck to the rock 'n' roll, which was a delightful change of pace.

I like Prince's big arena band, especially when it features saxophonist Maceo Parker, and there are certainly songs that benefit from the horn section and the overall fire power. The 3rd Eye Girl trio, however, is a very different creature. It's built to rock, leaving plenty of room for Prince to fill with his epic guitar leads.

That said, however, the best song of the night was the somber, hushed "Sometimes It Snows in April." It was a stark, teary-eyed reminder of just how effective Prince can be on a ballad.

He drew the main set to a close with the relative obscurity "Guitar" (from 2007's "Planet Earth") and the brand new song "FixUrLifeUp," before returning for his ultimate anthem, "Purple Rain."

Prince, however, was far from being done. He kept threatening that he was leaving the stage, only to stick around and play more numbers.

"I've got too many hits," he explained.

If only more artists had that problem.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

93. "Another San Fran Review--SF Weekly: Better Than: Cheaper Peep Shows"
In response to Reply # 0

Prince with 3rdEyeGirl
Tuesday, April 23, 2013 (Early Show)
DNA Lounge
Better than: Cheaper peep shows.

Your entertainment is largely incidental here. Prince's own delight is the principal concern, although you're free to soak up any pleasure that's left over (and there is plenty). Tonight Prince will issue demands, and either you or his band will comply with them. When he wants you to sing, you sing. When he says, "I need some church clap," the whole crowd church claps -- but you also heed when he cautions, "Listen to the drummer now, don't get excited." And when his 800-person rhythm section finally falls into the groove, he makes some approving sexual analogy and grins brightly, and everyone else grins, too.

Prince is, of course, a consummate showman. But the best part of last night's performance at DNA Lounge was the show on his own face. Watching him appreciate his exquisitely talented bandmates, make orgasmic expressions at his own fire-throwing guitar work, or giggle while punching the silly percussion effects on his keyboard, it was clear that a Prince show like this isn't about him trying to make the crowd happy. It's about him making himself happy. Your joy, as an audience member, comes from watching Prince use everything at hand to give Prince pleasure.

On the current Live Out Loud tour (and likely on the forthcoming Plectrum Electrum album), Prince and his new backing trio, the excellent 3rdEyeGirl, are in full face-melting rock-guitar mode. Few of the older songs he played sounded like their recorded versions; most were sexed-up. The Purple One spent much of yesterday's early set blazing away on his axes, trading licks and solos with 3rdEyeGirl guitarist Donna Grantis. Prince is a superlative player with perhaps the best tonal palette we've ever heard live, so it was absolutely thrilling to see him go fretboard-to-fretboard with a near-equal like Grantis. We took it as no coincidence that his curent look -- a bushy afro and pencil 'stache -- strongly recalls the image of Jimi Hendrix. When he blazed through "Bambi," "She's Always in My Hair," or "Guitar," you could hear the late blues-rock great in Prince as easily as you could see him.

No performance from The Artist would be complete without a demonstration of his funk credentials, and we got plenty of nasty grooves in the two-hour set. Prince bounced around instruments, from guitar, to vocals-only, to keyboard, even at times demanding the five-string bass from Ida Nielsen to show his own considerable skill at slapping. "Funk is in my DNA," he insisted at one point, and we were in no position to argue: Prince devoted the end of the main set to a thumping medley that leapt from "Sign 'O' the Times" to "Forever In My Life" to "Hot Thing" to "A Love Bizarre" (his duet with Sheila E.) to "I Would Die 4 U." When it was over, Prince threw down the bass and bellowed something into the mic about how ridiculously funky he was. Even the Purple One gets seduced by the Purple One.

Any small setting for a Prince show would be a rare treat, although DNA did leave a bit to be desired. Although the sound was excellent, the dance club isn't designed to give a clear view of the stage from all points, so some in the crowd spent the show looking at a pillar, or the back of a speaker stack. A full house was a given, but the situation last night approached Tokyo subway conditions, with arms pinned at sides and traffic jams where one person wanted to move but there was literally no space to let them through. Forget shoving off to the bar to grab a drink: If you could see some of the stage and breathe at the same time, you were doing well.

When you could see the portion of the stage that Prince happened to be inhabiting, though, it made for the kind of weird brain eruption that only comes from being in close proximity to a ridiculously famous person. The man comes over and makes eye contact, and you see the muscles in his cheeks, you notice the detailed paint job on his guitar, you watch him flash a tooth-whitened grin as his fingers leap up the fretboard for another aw-shit guitar lick. We could have written an entire review of Prince's facial expressions: The orgasmic string-bend, the dirty funk stink-face, the angelic falsetto-reach. But whether he's masterfully playing his own instruments, subtly directing his band, or going over to personally adjust his monitor levels on the stage-adjacent mixing board, one thing is always clear: This is Prince's show, held for Prince's pleasure. You are just here to watch him get off.

Is he human? A canny friend of ours afterward pointed out one notable absence from Prince's appearance last night: sweat. At the end of his two-hour show, the man looked bone-dry. How this happened, we cannot fathom.

R.I.P. Richie Havens: Prince offered two tributes to the '60s folk singer, who died yesterday. He first mentioned Havens at the start of the show, then, later, played a version of "Freedom," the powerful tune that closed Havens' Woodstock set. From there, he went straight into a hard-grooving "Joy in Repetition."

Just jamming: During one particularly goofy, free-form moment playing with his band, Prince muttered, "If you was at my house, we'd be doing the same thing." It came out almost as an excuse. And we have no trouble believing it.

Typical: Given that he was playing another show immediately after ours, we figured Prince wouldn't be able to do his typically long series of encores. We were wrong. After a meaty main set, the band members disappeared, while the crowd howled for them to return. When they did, Prince said they had time for just one more song. But they spent at least another half-hour onstage. At that rate, we're very curious what time the later show started -- and ended.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Sounds like the band is starting to heat up, based on this review, should have some audio in about two days

Pretty sure this little tour will be expanded - after reading reviews D'angelo cancelled his album again and soul revue tour, it's funny that Prince is wearing all black these days

The question still remains, can Prince rock?

I have heard some earlier shows, and they just missed the Prince quirky ness to it and the funk rock element, and the lyrics to some of these new tracks are awful, at least the wanking makes up for it on that Cause and Effect track

Based on the san fran reviews, sounds like they are starting to warm-up, I need Jon Bream to fly out to a show and write a review, these reviews are fucking awful though

What's cool though is this tour has not been a celeb jack off fest either, so far like that recent little hollywood 3121 shit he did

murph if you got audio, video share inbox - ill do the same

If I come across something I will def. give u a heads up...

But i'm getting great vibes from some folks I know that have been to the shows...One is a casual Prince fan who has only seen P once (Musicology tour)...Her sister got her a ticket to the San Fran gig...And she was going on and on about how it was one of the best gigs she has been to in a while and the looseness of P...

She especially pointed out that the girl on guitar is the secret weapon of the show...She said people were losing their shit during the guitar-driven material...And yeah...the funk, from what I've been told, is still there underneath it all...

As for the question on can P rock? I think that was answered a long time ago...He was never a cock rocker...But he's rocking out..And he seems to be embracing that on this tour...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....
