I first got that song on my iPod in spring/summer 2011, whenever he first released it. It obtained the top spot on my Top 25 Most Played list within like 5 or 6 months (which is saying something ) and remains there, as I still listen to it like once a week if not more. He DESTROYS that beat. And "nasty, kiddd" has become a catch phrase among a few friends and I.

I'm not a big fan of the over dramatic No Introduction.

I don't care how old Nasty was by the time the album dropped. That is an undeniable opener.

What's a better way to start an album than that vocal clip

"Y'all ready for Nas...y'all ready for Nasty Nas!"

And then just hit them track after track.

He absolutely destroys The Don too.

I resequenced Life Is Good and subbed in some of the bonus tracks.

I can't completely remember it off hand but it was something like

1 Nasty
2 Back When
3 The Don
4 A Queens Story
5 Loco-Motive
6 The Black Bond
7 Roses
8 Daughters
9 You Wouldn't Understand
10 Where's The Love
11 Stay
12 World's An Addiction
13 Cherry Wine
14 Bye Baby

I may have fit Trust up in there as well.

I didn't change up the sequencing too much but I tossed the bonus tracks and got rid of SoS and my LIG is flawless now haha.

lyrically? hell no. that was Nas finally loosening up on wax, IMO.

He always seemed a little serious until that song came out... that song let me know that Nas could clown someone in a cold sort of way.

Jay was bothered by being called "Gay-Z" and "Cock-A-Fella" from one of his rap heroes, that was worth the price of admission.

Its speaks more to how great Nas' catalog is versus Ether being wack. Ether would be another rappers crowning achievement but because Nas got so many timeless joints, Ether doesnt make to many peoples top 15 list.

this was tough. tracks like "Black Zombies" which I really enjoyed, some of the other tracks from Life Is Good, "Life's A Bitch", "One Love"... could easily be on this list.

and there are a GRIP of songs I love even though are one or two things off about them. Like "The Cross". Hate that beat, but love the lyrics (well, at least one verse) -- "Who Killed It", which other than "Ether" and "Destroy and Rebuild" is one of the most hilarious songs he ever recorded.

I'm going for order but this could change the second I hit "post"

(not including features like Verbal Intercourse or Eye For An Eye or Distant Relative Tracks)

1 The World Is Yours
2 Memory Lane
3 Street Dreams (remix)
4 Nas Is Like
5 Phone Tap
6 Doo Rags
7 Take It In Blood
8 Back When
9 Project Windows
10 NY State of Mind
11 Street's Disciple
12 Made You Look
13 Purple
14 NY State of Mind Pt 2
15 I Gave You Power

And there are well more than 15 tracks that I feel bad for leaving off.

I'll say it again…NO other MC has as long of a track list when it comes to GREAT songs.

For real. Black Bond is classic Nas. Only Nas would make that song and only Nas would do it that well. The imagery, the slight story within a non-storytelling song, a beat that allows the focus to remain on the MC. That song is greatness. And while I don't hate Reach Out, Summer on Smash and Worlds An Addiction as much as everyone else, if those bonus track officially replaced that stretch, that album would be insane.

>Man...The World is Yours is my favorite rap song of all time.
>That and Memory Lane are undeniable

The World Is Your is also my favorite. Nas and Pete...favorite MC, favorite producer. And they turned out a classic timeless track.

Memory Lane is the epitome of MCing to me.

Straight up...if you replace those with the bonuses..you have a 100% undeniable classic rap album...that little lapse makes it questionable though.

Because if they weren't all together it would give you a different perspective.

Or if Reach Out or SOS were cut, it would make the other one easier to accept.

Worlds An Addiction is actually dope and the third verse is insane. It actually is a victim to that sequence more than anything else because it doesn't have the legs to come off of two commercial tracks due to its arrangement.

If Loco-Motive or Daughters came after SOS, the sequencing wouldn't have the same effect on those tracks because they are classic hip-hop joints as opposed to the more experimental Worlds An Addiction.

switching the songs surrounding it wouldn't make anyone be like "oh it ain't so bad". Song is certifiable horeshit and Nas should be embarrassed he ever made it.

SOS is what it is.

When the album dropped I was playing it in Atlantis for a week and SOS didn't sound like horseshit when surrounded by beautiful women (dont tell my wife i was looking) on the beach or by the pool. He song has its purpose and I understand if you're not familiar with that environment or can't relate it to that environment then you wouldn't have the same perspective. The online writers don't get outside of their moms basement so I can't imagine they have any frame of reference.

With that said, the song is by no means a favorite of mine. I wouldve cut it from the final track listing as I said above. But it's unrealistic to think a major label album by an artist on Nas' level wouldn't have a few commercial tracks.

At the end if the day, the beat is one of the better Swizz beats and Nas raps his ass off on the verses. Swizz is the one who ruins the track with the hook.

And I always look at albums to see if I can play them alll the way through and SOS did not keep me from doing that. I'm not always in the mood for it, but as I said, with my listening experience on vacation, SOS was ok with me bro.

Right but the fact is he doesn't NEED songs like that.

Nas always raps his ass off. Doesn't make the song or the theme any easier to stomach.

Word. We just differ on that is all it comes down to. I don't care what environment there is, there's great club songs...this ain't one of them. The girls who dance to it may be hot but that doesn't change the song either haha. Oh well.

I wasn't necessarily speaking to you directly. Just the average listener who complains and applies to Nas double standard to all that he does.

He may like that song though. Like I said, other than my hatred for Swizz, the song is not a bad summer time party joint.

What is the theme? Chilling in the summer on vacation? I don't see anything bad about that regardless if you like the song or not.

It's not really about the females to me though. And his isnt a club joint to me either. Yes it is a party joint that can be played in the club but the reason I have m stance on the song is the fact that it is a song about chilling in the summer on vacation. I enjoy that and the song reminds me of that. I don't always like club songs because I'm not a big club person (think Chappelles slow motion sketch) but I am big on traveling to nice location which is the feeling I get from the song.

This is plea coppage 101. People dislike the song because for the most part it sucks.

But THIS I can get on board with. If it wasn't for Swizz, I might like the song. But Swizz is one of the worst things in hip hop in the last decade, and THAT is saying something.

I agree its a victim of sequencing. Not sure where I'd put it, maybe second to last track or something, but Nas rips it.

The bonus tracks should have been on the official release- no idea why/how they weren't.

I'd cut that Ross joint and SOS.

I like the beat.

Nas kills it.

I dont even mind Ross.

But the fact no one corrected it to Accidental Murders I just can't get past.

Plus I dont like Ross so even though his verse is tolerable, I don't want him on a Nas album.

AZ should've been the only feature.

In the context of the song, they are talking about people who commit murders accidentally which means they should be calling them Accidental Murders as opposed to Accident Murderers.

Accident Murderers would imply, someone who murders accidents.

That beat fucking GOES. And Fauntleroy destroys the hook. Really a perfect song. Not that it matters in the digital music age but I can't fathom how Nas decided to add that gem only as a bonus while putting the steaming pile of shit that was Summer on Smash on the actual album tracklist.

The beat knocks, and Nas spits fire on it. Granted, it aint wat you typically expect from Nas, but in this case, it served its purpose: club songs hoes can dance to, tight lyricism for the "heads", catchy hook, and a BANGING Timbo track!

I mean, it absolutely murders his other similar "club friendly" songs. but keep fronting tho

Lol I somehow missesd that post. But what do u expect from a gang of posters here who prolly never been to a club before?? Also, we can only take Nas staring out of project windows or contemplating about the buck that bought the bottle for so long. variety is neccesary, and in this case it was superb.

Besides, the song felt somewhat "natural" for a club song unlike other attemps like Hate Me Now , Oochie Wally, etc.. where he was obviously pandering and waaaay out of his element.

In addition. like, how many thug niggas, ghetto broads or errant kids knew about reparations before the song hit?? Lol. We can argue Nas is actually educating the masses while they dancing or mean muggin, similar to I Can.. that's brilliant!

Not only was it overtly commecial, it was the song designed for Nas to finally reach the masses. the lavish over the top video, Puffy feature, Swizz Beats (who btw was running commercial radio at the time), the resulting beef with Puff n Steve Stoute, that garnered a MTV clip, etc

Everything about that joint was cold n calculated. Nas wanted that Rocafella, Ruff Ryders fanfare, and for this one song.. mission accomplished. Thank god he fell back to earth soon after

Was it really though? Sure once they had the song they decided to go over the top with the video but I don't think they went into the studio trying to make that joint commercial. You Won't See Me Tonight they did.

the lavish over the top
>video, Puffy feature, Swizz Beats (who btw was running

Swizz didn't produce that joint. It's credited to Fox's brother Pretty Boy if I remember correctly.

the resulting beef with Puff n

So you think that whole beef was planned in order to increase Nas' popularity? That doesn't even make sense.

Again, I don't agree that it was *that* calculated.

I mean...that beat doesn't even remotely sound like something Swizz could've done. It has some substance. Swizz never did anything with any substance.

Well, no one can really tell what their intent was. But fact is, the finished product was a commercial song aimed for radio play. Add in the fact the beat was a knockoff Swizz imitation, (and as said previously), Swizz was running radio at the time, so mission accomplished! I'm sure they could have went a totally different direction if they didn't want that kind of song.

Point taken.

>the resulting beef with Puff n
>>Steve Stoute, that garnered a MTV clip, etc

I wasn't too clear. But I meant was the resulting beef garnered some notoriety and press for the video & song. I remember reading a whole VIBE article on that mess, also an MTV feature, and thinking "all this hype for a wack song??!!" For what its worth, that entire scenario could have only helped propel Hate Me Now, not stall it.

>So you think that whole beef was planned in order to increase
>Nas' popularity? That doesn't even make sense.

Not at all. But you must be naive if you think Hate Me Now was an accidental hit, and wasn't designed to be what it accomplished

Ok fine. But tell me this tho, do you think the song was geared towards his old Illmatic fans or newer, mainstream fans?

sure the lyrics and beat was vintage Nas and Primo, but something I cant pinpoint was missing. Guess maybe it was the fact that he was pandering to the "heads" that felt he had deserted his roots or whateva, but it just dont hit me like that.

It seemed like a Illmatic leftover that had rotted, thus devoid of the potency of the real shit.. thats just me tho

Maybe he was pandering, I don't know.

That doesn't take away from how dope it is though.

That's one of those tracks that when I hear it, I instantly go right back to where I was the first time I heard it.

It's really tough to say but it's probably in my top 3-5 Nas songs. Same deal here, I remember exactly when I first heard it and to this day I've never ever ever once been sick of that song despite the fact that I've listened to it ~2 million times.

Money, Cash, Weed, Cars was the original hook. I think they censored and changed it later, once someone pointed out that money & cash were the same thing. However, if you listen closely, I believe the first part of the chorus is actually Honeys, Cash, Weed, Cars...

A double CD would be perfect! I mean, dude is 10 albums deep, prolly got dozens of unreleased, mindblowing songs. Only prollem is I fear this "greatest hits" would include a gang of junk like Summer on Smash, Oochie Wally, etc

In response to Reply # 132

It may not include the songs we want it to but it was an official release.

Thing is, Nas' catalogue is so deep, you could do a hits album so many ways.

There are obviously the singles, which is pretty much what Columbia released.

Then there are his classic tracks that could fill multiple albums.

And then there are so vs that he has featured on. We discussed this before on here, and there really isn't another MC coming close to his feature game.

From Verbal Intercourse to Eye For An Eye to Fast Lane to Mo Money Mo Murder to Calm Down to Johnny Blaze to Queensday to We Major to Let My N*gg*s Live to Give It Up Fast to Body In The Trunk...and it goes on and on.

That could be at least a whole disc if not a double.

And finally, you could fill a disc or two of his best unreleased material.

A while back someone posted a shit load of Nas' unreleased and features and it was like 17 discs long full of incredible music.

I honestly don't see how someone else compares to this guy for the top spot when ALL things are considered.

With all the great songs listed, I'm sure Nas got tons of quotable gems we may have never heard or just overlooked. Perhaps slick or profound, post em up.

*Only one-liners though, not whole verses*

"my people be projects or jail, never Harvard or Yale"

"so many ways out the ghetto but no signs say OUT"

"my tongue is power. thrills women, kills demons"

I like it when Nas is having fun and creating concept songs like the movie song (Rewind), the crescendo pitch song (One mic), the biography songs (Rakim, Mike Tyson, etc) and the perspective song (I gave you power), etc. "Who killed it" is a song where Nas rhymes like James Cagney, and shit is creative and funny to me. Nas is a nerd for real, and that is a great thing !
