Apr 02nd 2013

Apr 02nd 2013
16
yeah that was just to ensure that jay had the most "MVPs"
Apr 02nd 2013

I think they're basing 2009 squarely on "Empire State Of Mind"
Apr 02nd 2013

this isn't best rapper, it's who had the #1 spot.
so bearing that in mind...

-86 and 87 should be swapped.
-slick rick over chuck d in 1988 is a head-scratcher.
-treach should have gotten 1991.
-redman came out too late in 1992 to give him that year. probably should have gone to das-efx or q-tip
-ja rule or ludacris should have gotten 2001. i'd have personally given it to luda as he had way more stuff out every month.
-not giving ja rule 2002 is a complete re-writing of history.
-kanye not getting 04 was another head-scratcher, but ok.
i guess urban legend was THAT big of a deal according to noz.
-09 unquestionably should have been drake as he was everywhere.
-12 should have been 2 chainz or somebody else.

that ol' white pop. demo bias the mind squad held still pervasively creeping into the opinion-shapers of today.

no problem giving props to eminem though. lol.

giving jay 2001 over luda and ja rule is incorrect.
not giving ja 2002 is flat-out an attempt to erase him from history.

By no means is BP3 a great or even good album but that song became every white person's anthem for a few years and was the first big hit Jay-z had post-retirement. KC & AG didn't do much to get ppl excited, but after "Empire State Of Mind" he became invincible and probably more beloved than 2003 levels

i have to go back and listen to it, but i remember Jay-z introducing a lot of flows on that album and then noticing a lot of rappers biting those flows on their songs/albums post BP3. Especially the Empire State of Mind flow.

I wouldn't take it too literal. No way the best rapper changes every year. But I can see the hottest rapper changing every year.

And since the grammies are no indicator of the years best in hip-hop, who else is trying to identify the hottest rapper each year?

Rakim and Nas are still alive so I'm not sure how anyone else is getting mentioned for "best" rapper alive in any of these years.

Like others said, this is a list of "hottest" rappers.

Cuz fuck your feelings...Nas in 2013 is still better than anyone you can name.

in fact, i think it's difficult to overstate just how influential he was that year, and it's not something that can necessarily be gleaned just by looking back at album sales or singles charts or magazine covers, anything along those lines. it was a "you had to be there" type of thing.

when I think of 92 hop hop, puba's definitely the first person that comes to mind. dude was one of the first legitimate style icons in hip hop culture. every dude in my high school was trying to dress like him. the ralph lo and tommy hil rugbies, the backpacks, the baggy girbauds and guess jeans. that early 90s proliferation of Lo Head culture was all him (and zhigge, to a lesser extent). niggas was showing up to the b boy sets in full ralph lauren duck hunting ensembles and shit lol. shit was crazy.

throw in the fact that his mary j collabos basically changed the direction of hip hop
for the next few years, as far as legitimizing credible mcs x r&b features, and i think he's gotta get that year. i mean, i guess i can see a tip or redman argument but nah.

36 chambers came out at the very end of 93, and he definitely can't compete with snoop for that year anyway. so we're left trying to say meth was more highly regarded than nas or big in 94. no dice.

That's kinda late to give him 07. He'd be in the running for 08 but Weezy Mania was at its peak during that time.

Given that Superstar is really the only time people have heard of Lupe (outside of his anti-Obama antics), he's just a one-hit wonder, and should be treated like all one hitters in the foray of mainstream music.

I mean he had buzz coming off being on tons of end of year lists for 2011, then got signed to Aftermath, toured with Drake and then dropped "The Recipe" & "Swimming Pools". The latter being a huge hit that even ppl that hate radio songs could get behind. IMO at the end of the year Kendrick Lamar was on a lot more ppl's mind than Drake.

I mean it's the easiest way to climb the ladder without releasing new music your. Kinda like letting everyone else do the hard work while you benefit. I mean it did wonders for Nas after he did Illmatic he did some of the best guests verses in hip hop ("Eye For An Eye", "Fast Life", "Verbal Intercourse").

As for the album coming out in October, that's fine but it leaked before that and he dropped "The Recipe" & "Swimming Pools" way earlier. That combined with being on the Club Paradise tour, signing with Aftermath and being on almost every end of year list. It's clear who was on everyone's top rapper list at the end of the year, Drake I can't say was that.

can't go both ways.

Somebody argued that Chuck D deserves 89, and if you wanna say "Kane wins 89 bc he was hotter/more popular, then Hammer or even Vanilla Ice should get 90 or 91." And someone also argued for Nelly somewhere in the early 2000's.

Even with Jeezy getting 05, but Ross not getting 2010...cases can be made

hits and albums from 99 on... no one on that list, probably with the exception of Em has that claim. who cares if he was ever the hottest, (usually a claim for the guy with the biggest single really), he was ALWAYS right there next to them and AND WHEN THEY FELL OFF JAY WAS STILL THERE

But I was really making a point that whoever is "hottest" in the game seems to sizzle out fast.

he's never had a platinum album, and Port of Miami is still his highest selling LP. since his "reign" only Teflon Don has gone gold

like others have said the ubiquitous nature of certain singles skews the value of artist. in this day and age folks literally love songs and they don't know names or artist, they just attach sounds to their out and about moments

i even remember some one like Chelsea Lately who fronts like she's down with the negros refer to him as a producer on her show one night

they deserved a couple of those years because they were genuinely more popular than the choices they picked.

and when it comes to crossovers, you don't get more crossover than eminem in 2002.
he made a fucking bio-pic and starred in it. lol.

either way ja rule was more popular than eminem to FANS OF RAP MUSIC in 2002.
you remember the 00's terms "club on smash" or "club banger"?
that was ja rule & nelly in 2001/2002.
and likewise for luda in '01.
but i had '01 to nelly because he had so many records...
eminem records have never played in a Black club anywhere, ever.
they just played constantly on MTV.
they didn't actually even get touched by DJs.

as far as the hammer in 90 comparisons,
hammer had like 2 big records in his whole career.
vanilla ice had 1.
nelly had 5 big records (EI, ride with me, batter up, number 1 and midwest swing) all in 2001 alone.
ja rule had (always on time, down ass chick, down 4 u, ain't it funny with jlo, the joints with ashanti & mary j blige, the song with bobby brown, etc. etc.) ALL in 2002 alone.
...forget it.

Much bigger than Jay back then. Lots of young rappers today (i.e. Blu and Kendrick) cite him as one of their early favorites.

He was so much bigger than Jay that he sold 5 mil off one LP, had numerous copycats start to emerge, had many publications and many in the streets saying he was the best MC, and was the measuring stick for lyrical/ commercial MCs right?

Jay was rubbing shoulders w/ X, seriously, no way was he dwarfed by dude @ all... I was in the clubs and working promotion during that time and DJs were more excited to get new Jigga than new X by comparison... just an observation from my experience in the business...

"Hard Knock Life" (LP) dropped in '98, he already had "Can I Get A" and "Money Ain't A Thang" hitting hard over the summer, then the title track dropped and sealed the deal, sold 5 mil. He became "that n*gga" in '99, but '98 was the catalyst.

By the end of '98, "BLAZE" magazine (an offshoot of VIBE) had done a "Top 50 MCs of all time" list and Jay was (2 1/2 years after debuting with Reasonable Doubt) already listed at #9, one slot after Slick Rick and one ahead of Ice Cube. Nas wasn't even listed in the top 10 (he was listed at #15). DMX wasn't even listed in the 50 at all.

Rolling Stone mag had done a feature on hip hop w/ Jay-Z, Wyclef and Master P on the cover (October '98).

What did they go by, record sales, magazine polls, etc.?

When I start seeing Jay-Z, Drake, Biggie, Run, & etc. names more than once I know it's a pretty shitty list.

That people always talk shit about Complex lists, about how they're so garbage, but the lists are always on the tips of their tongues every time one drops. I'd think that if the lists in general are so bad, that they wouldn't even be entertained for discussion.

I don't agree with all of the choices either, but geez, lol

We love shit that sucks.

We're the nation that lives for the track wreck.

We feel better about ourselves through others misfortune.

We watch terrible reality shows.

We listen to terrible music.

We tune in to see what dumb shit celebrity so and so is going to do next.

Why would this be any different?

People love lists and they love the lists even more when they don't agree with it because they can boost their confidence by voicing their own opinion which they feel is correct.

All that said, most of these lists are horrible. This list would be fine is the switched the word "best" to "hottest".

BTW, disagreeing with lists is fine. I don't agree with the whole thing either.

It's this holier-than-thou, "OMG ALL COMPLEX LISTS SUCK" shit that's corny to me when they're always talking about the lists every time they drop.

Since you could see the converging point (if there was one) in any given point in time. Like in 1992-93 I would have said something like DAS EFX as well as Snoop.

Snoop was THE rising star of that time, but EVERYONE was biting the shit out of DAS EFX. And they had just came out.

Ask any of the top rappers from that period (that are still alive/R.I.P. B.I.G. and Pun) and since enough time has passed they'll likely be willing to admit that 'Bis had dudes SHOOK in 97-98. If we're talking about who the "best" rapper was, without question it was Canibus. Now if it's about who was the "hottest", I can't really argue with their choices for those years. But "Best Rapper Alive" has a nice ring to it, and it doesn't infringe upon MTV's Hottest MCs brand. So I get it.

U have to be able to showcase that lyrical greatness beyond 1 great diss record and a few dope freestyles and guest spots...

At the very least, make ONE decent album....

If this was a list about great battle rappers then yeah, Canibus would be the best or one of the best of that year...

But like I said, it's not that serious...

they don't even stay true to their opening statement

it literally is most popular after 97.

in 98 alone Canibus and Big Pun have claims to that

and in 99 i'd give it to Em not Jay because he blew up on the national scene and at was at the nascent state of his lyrical powers AND EVERYBODY WAS WATCHING LISTENING

shit from 2000-03 Ghost, even going wood, had more critical acclaim than any other rapper and it was hard not to believe he was the GOAT of that period

even Pusha T began to get that type of love circa 06/07

Kanye has never been considered a great rapper, we just Love (well i do) his overall artistic vision. so him on this list is very suspect, which ironically justifies why some one like Nelly was left off

is Jay like a silent partner at Complex
