"Daft Punk's new album in May *swipe*"

http://pitchfork.com/news/48797-daft-punks-new-album-is-called-random-access-memories-out-may-21-listed-on-itunes/

The wait is over. The new Daft Punk album, Random Access Memories, is up for pre-order on iTunes. It's out May 21 via Daft Life Limited, an imprint of Columbia Records. Fuck yeah.

The tracklist is currently blank and details are scarce, but the follow-up to 2010's Tron: Legacy soundtrack features a version of the artwork above. (Check it out on iTunes.) UPDATE: That's the artwork above. It features 13 tracks, which matches the number of Daft Punk songs Sony recently registered.

If previous reports are correct, the album will feature Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, and Panda Bear.

Random Access Memories track lengths:

01 4:34
02 5:21
03 9:04
04 3:48
05 5:37
06 5:53
07 8:18
08 6:07
09 4:50
10 5:41
11 4:39
12 4:11

http://www.urb.com/2012/05/25/breaking-giorgio-moroder-recorded-with-daft-punk/

The robots asked the Munich Machine to go into a vocal booth and speak about his life. In the studio were multiple microphones of various vintages from the ’60s to today. When Moroder asked the engineer why they had so many mics, he replied that the mic they would use would depend on what decade of his life he was speaking about. When Moroder asked if anyone would know the difference, the engineer replied “They will know.”

http://www.konbini.com/en/music/daft-punk-the-list-of-guests-on-random-access-memories-revealed/

It is a true prestigious “all-star” team and from different generations that Daft Punk gathered to work on their colossal project.

As previously announced, legendary Nile Rodgers (who produced Diana Ross, Madonna, David Bowie etc. and played guitar for Chic, Michael Jackson etc.) and Giorgio Moroder collaborated on the French dance duo forthcoming album. But now, some other interesting names have been added to their collaboration list: Julian Casablancas, from The Strokes, is singing on the track n°5 but also Pharrell Williams‘s sensual voice will be heard on track n°6 and n°8 which is in perfect harmony with Rodgers’s guitar; vocoders have been used on the voices obviously.

We can also appreciate genius Canadian pianist Gonzales on track n°4, along with guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. (who used his skills working with Michael Jackson on several albums, but he also worked with The Temptations and Whitney Houston).

Finally, the album ends with participation of New Jersey house producer Todd Edwards and Noah Benjamin Lennox (aka Panda Bear, Animal Collective) on tracks 11 and 12. Then on the very last track you have Dj Falcon‘s touch, who, back in the days, formed a house duet with Daft Punk‘s one-half Thomas Bangalter which was called Together; like a sweet leap back in the past.

The Daft Punk also invited prestigious academy award-winning American composer, musician, songwriter, and actor Paul Williams; you will hear his powerful yet moving voice on tracks 7 and 9.
Daft Punk – Random Access Memories : Guests

1- Nile Rodgers (Guitar), Paul Jackson Jr (Guitar) - 4:34

2- Instrumental - 5:21

3- Giorgio Moroder (Synth) - 9:04

4- Gonzales (Piano) - 3:48

5- Julian Casablancas (Vocals) - 5:37

6- Nile Rodgers (Guitar), Pharrel Williams (Vocals) - 5:53

7- Paul Williams (Vocals and Lyrics) - 8:18

8- Nile Rodgers (Guitar), Pharrel Williams (Vocals) - 6:07

9- Paul Williams (Lyrics) - 4:50

10- Instrumental - 5:41

11- Todd Edwards (Vocals) - 4:39

12- Noah Benjamin Lennox (Panda Bear – Vocals) - 4:11

13- Dj Falcon - 6:21

25. "Daft Punk Reveal Secrets of New Album - swipe"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/exclusive-daft-punk-reveal-secrets-of-new-album-20130413

Last night, at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in southern California, Daft Punk debuted a teaser trailer for their new album, Random Access Memories: Without warning, a nearly two-minute video popped up on jumbotron screens flanking the festival's various stages, in which Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and the Daft Punk robots rock out in heavily sequined getups to "Get Lucky," the album's lead single. Surprised festival-goers at the main stage began dancing and pointing camera phones, oblivious to the fact that the French dance heroes – Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo – were in fact standing in civilian garb on the edge of the VIP section, watching themselves on the screens with delight. (Pharrell was standing nearby, and he gave Thomas a high five afterwards.) When the screens went black, Thomas and Guy-Manuel were shown tweets from attendees giddy about what they'd just seen. Thomas grinned. "The fun part will be seeing the footage people shot when it hits the Internet," he said.

Random Access Memories, made in near-total secrecy, is one of 2013's most eagerly anticipated – and most enigma-enshrouded – releases. Late last month, for an upcoming Rolling Stone profile of Daft Punk, they discussed the new album’s creation in extensive detail at their studio in Paris. Here are the ten things you need to know:

They began working on Random Access Memories in 2008, in Paris, with no clear plan. "After three records, there was a sense of searching for a record we hadn’t done," Thomas says. The duo were dissatisfied with early demos that leaned heavily on electronic equipment, feeling like they were operating on "autopilot," Thomas says. Eventually, a new approach emerged: "We wanted to do what we used to do with machines and samplers," he explains, "but with people." Except for a snippet of "an Australian rock record" that opens the final track, "Contact," Daft Punk foreswore samples entirely, and they limited the role of drum machines to just two of the album’s thirteen tracks. The only electronics come in the form of a massive, custom-built modular synthesizer that Daft Punk played live on the album, they told me, and an arsenal of vintage vocoders on which they manually manipulated factors like pitch, vibrato and legato. "There’s this thing today where the recorded human voice is processed to try to feel robotic," Thomas says, referring to the undying AutoTune vogue. "Here, we were trying to make robotic voices sound the most human they’ve ever sounded, in terms of expressivity and emotion."

Nile Rodgers: New Daft Punk Album 'Went Back to Go Forward'

The title captures the duo’s endless fascination with blurs between humans and technology…"We were drawing a parallel between the brain and the hard drive – the random way that memories are stored," says Thomas.

…and their endless fascination with the past. 2001’s Discovery was in part a backward-looking concept album about revisiting the funk, disco and soft-rock of Thomas’ and Guy-Manuel’s childhood. For Random Access Memories, they hired "top-notch session players," says Guy-Manuel, with credits on classic records by Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock, and Eric Clapton. Chic mastermind Nile Rodgers played rhythm guitar on a few tracks. "The Seventies and the Eighties are the tastiest era for us," Guy-Manuel says. "And all these guys were tripping on meeting again and playing together again." He adds: "It’s not that we can’t make crazy futuristic sounding stuff, but we wanted to play with the past."

Pharrell, Julian Casablancas, Giorgio Moroder, and Animal Collective’s Panda Bear are among the guest vocalists. "We were at a party for Madonna’s last album," Pharrell recalls, "and I was like, You guys should have produced this! Why did that not happen? Madonna and the robots would have been unbelievable! They were like, We’re working on something. I said, Whatever you do, call me – I’ll play tambourine on it. They looked at each other and they were like, We’ll be in touch." Pharrell wound up singing on "Get Lucky" and a stomping disco track called "Lose Yourself to Dance."

The album’s move away from computerized sounds reflects Daft Punk’s "ambivalence" about the EDM craze they helped to inspire. "Electronic music right now is in its comfort zone and it’s not moving one inch," Thomas says. "That’s not what artists are supposed to do." He adds that the genre is suffering "an identity crisis: You hear a song, whose track is it? There’s no signature. Skrillex has been successful because he has a recognizable sound: You hear a dubstep song, even if it’s not him, you think it’s him."

Keep an eye on those Saturday Night Live commercial breaks. So far, Daft Punk have debuted two fifteen-second chunks of "Get Lucky" in ads that play during Saturday Night Live, incrementally revealing more of the song. Along with billboards advertising the album, these TV ads represent a throwback impulse that's guiding the new album’s roll-out. "When you drive on the sunset strip and see these billboards, it’s more magical than a banner ad," Thomas says. "SNL is this part of American culture with a certain timelessness to it." (A billboard overhanging the I-10 east greeted motorists driving to Coachella this weekend.)

The new songs came together around the world. Most vocals and overdubs happened in Paris, but the rhythm sections were committed to Ampex reels in Los Angeles and New York, at Electric Ladyland studio, Henson (formerly A&M) studios, and other venerated old rooms. "There are songs on the album that traveled into five studios over two and a half years," Thomas says. "They’re vials being filled up with life. Today, electronic music is made in airports and hotel rooms, by DJs traveling. It has a sense of movement, maybe, but it’s not the same vibe as going into these studios that contain specific things."

While recording, Daft Punk found time in their schedules to jam with Kanye West for his next album. At their Paris studio, they laid down a combination of live and programmed drums while Kanye worked out rough vocals on the fly. "It was very raw: he was rapping – kind of screaming primally, actually," Thomas says. "Kanye doesn’t give a fuck," Guy-Manuel adds. "He’s a good friend." Director (and longtime Daft Punk compatriot) Michel Gondry says that Kanye recently played him "two songs" that sprang from the session. "One of them, I told him it sounded solid and powerful – I envisioned a cube when I heard it," Gondry says. "He told me, Chris Cunningham’s already directing the video!"

The biker gear from the last album and tour is out; sequins are in. Hedi Slimane, the Saint-Laurent-by-way-of-Dior-Homme fashion designer who made Daft Punk’s black-leather bike-dude outfits for their last album, 2005’s Human After All, designed their new look (spied for the first time in the exclusive photo above.)

They say there are no current tour plans to promote the album. Their "Alive 2007" world tour, in which they played within a giant steel pyramid covered in screens, was a marvel of pop stagecraft, but Thomas says "we have no current plans" to tour the new record. "We want to focus everything on the act and excitement of listening to the album. We don’t see a tour as an accessory to an album." When they do finally hit the road, he added, it will be with a career-encompassing set list, not one overly focused on the new material.

_______

I love how they're building this up - feels like somebody at Columbia remembered how to do proper album marketing again. I am so hyped for this and no leaks with 4 weeks to go, it's been a long time since I've been forced to wait. Feels so good though.

I agree man. Pharrell is quite cringe-worthy in this interview. You don't need MDMA for this music - really? Lame. The other interviews seemed genuine

Clever marketing campaign from the label though.

Assuming this here is the radio rip in question:

http://www.charged.fm/blog/post/3714/listen-get-lucky-radio-rip-by-daft-punk

But then I thought the leak of Human after all was fake because of how bad it sucked (and as I have stated before I expect this album to suck as well). But this version has no new vocals from Pharell and just doesn't feel pro to me. I'm not the only one saying this either.

I'll acknowledge thought that if it's fake is weird they are taking it down, and that it apparently got played on french radio in the first place.

pharrell fucking sucks on it - hes trying to sing properly, when everyone knows hes a terrible singer. they should have got him to help out with chords, not vocals. nile rodgers is phoning it in, theres no funk or tension to his guitar parts. and the song itself is just not very strong. its well produced and considered but its also deeply bland and boring, like some corny funky disco house from the late 90s made to be played in the fitting rooms of womens clothing stores. i expected more. please dont let the album be this average.

i really dont understand what pharrell is doing on here
if you have him produce a track for you and you want him to sing the hook, whatever
but this is largely (if not completely) a DP production (right?)
so why would you employ pharrell to sing when there are literally hundreds of more skilled vocalists out there?

98. "DAFT PUNK'S 'RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES' REVIEWED TRACK BY TRACK"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.mixmag.net/words/features/daft-punks-random-access-memories-reviewed-track-by-track

01
'Give Life Back To Music' feat Nile Rodgers and Paul Jackson Jr

A big, rockin’ intro gives way to that classic, laidback, sunsplashed 70s sound that Daft Punk have fallen in love with and which underpins ‘Random Access Memories’. Rodgers and Jackson whip up a breezy Californian vibe that makes you feel like you’re at the wheel of a convertible, speeding down an open highway beneath a vast blue sky… Seb Wheeler

A Chic-y starter with a big intro, grand mid-section and, ‘quelle surprise’, a vocoder! It’s upbeat, BBQ-ready music that affirms the message “Let the music of your life, give life back to music”. The first fade out of many denotes this isn’t a typical DJ album and has a much more relaxed pace to it than ‘Human After All’ and the like. Nick Stevenson

02
'The Game Of Love'

'The Game Of Love' is an 80s slap in the face with a slow tempo and distinctively seductive vibe. It could be the backdrop to a sunset over the Miami strip and with sweet whisperings of ‘I just wanted to stay’ at the end of the track, you won’t want it to stop either. Jeremy Abbott

My heart sank a little when I heard another vocoded vocal pop up here. Really? Already? Are we that short of ideas? But I soon realised I am a dickhead. What else was I expecting from Daft Punk? And this happens to be the best vocoder vocal I have ever heard. The track starts with some sleazy funk, with a feel reminiscent of Bobby Womack’s ‘Across 110th Street’, but slower. Then the vocal starts: "you were breaking my heart, when you decided to walk away’. It’s elegiac, mournful, emotive, subtle and has so much detail – it really moved me. Some strange analogue synth top lines and solos help weird it out a bit before the closing "And I just wanted you to say" refrain has you reaching for the aluminium tissues. Nick DeCosemo

03
'Giorgio By Moroder' feat Giorgio Moroder

The synth legend narrates the beginning of this track, telling the tales of starting out wanting to be a musician in Germany, sleeping in his car after gigs and how he “decided on using a synthesiser because that is the sound of the future”. He then explains how he “knew we needed a click” and a click track duly starts a basic percussion line. Then a classic Moroder arpeggiated synth line kicks in and it’s goosebumps time. The chord structure and timbre of the synth line actually sounds more like Cerrone’s ‘Supernature’ but it would be churlish to brand this one in any other pigeon hole than TUNE. A highlight of the album so far, especially for more purist electronic heads. Nick DeCosemo

04
'Within' feat Chilly Gonzales

‘Within’ eases you in with a stunning piano solo from Chilly Gonzales. Although this sweeping ballad is only 3.30m in length, the song soothes you from the off. "So many things I don’t understand," is the prominent lyric and Chilly’s chords combined with star-gazing symbols make for a beautiful summer lullaby. Jeremy Abbott

One of the shortest tracks on the album (3mins 48 seconds) is also the most poignant; I could still hear this piano days after first hearing it. A deep vocoder sings about not understanding the world, being lost and not even remembering his own name. Let’s face it, we’ve all been there. Small but perfectly formed. Nick Stevenson

05
'Instant Crush' feat Julian Casablancas

This is the bit where our heroes’ memory bank belches up the grizzled remains of early noughties indie, complete with ruff, hungover guitars and New York protagonist Julian Casablancas. He’s on good form but Daft Punk seem to be keen to create a wimpy soundtrack for a Converse TV advert. Weak. Seb Wheeler

Rolling beats kick in from the start here and while it’s hard to understand the lyrics, it’s all part of the super retro feel. A classic 80s guitar solo rocks in to underline the point but a cascading drop provides the coolest bit. Though this does make me realise why I liked Daft Punk’s Tron soundtrack so much – because unlike this generational obsession with the 80s, it was sonically so future-facing. Phil Dudman

This sounds very AOR from the start with chuggy guitar chords and an 80s synth line. Julian Casablancas’ voice is produced in a strange way. It seems to be a mix of dry vocal, vocoder and autotune – while it’s great to hear something different, the song again seems a little dull. Maybe it’ll be a grower. It does have a quite ridiculous over the top harmonising guitar solo that could’ve been used by Thin Lizzy circa 1976. Nick DeCosemo

06
'Lose Yourself To Dance' feat Nile Rodgers and Pharrell

It’s a festival clap-along with Pharrell on vocals. Much like ‘Get Lucky’, he’s backed up by some vocoder robots, this time singing "Come on, come on". It’s a verse, chorus, verse set up with wicky-wah guitars and a catchy message about, you guessed it, losing yourself to dance. Nick Stevenson

We are back on more familiar Daft Punk territory here. Heavy beats that sound a bit like the intro to Dizzee’s breakthrough ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’ (where he sampled 80s rocker Billy Squier) start this stomper – only with more claps thrown in for good measure. Pharrell’s trademark falsetto implores us to “Lose yourself to dance” as Nile does the business on the axe. A rising vocoder line sings “Come on, come on, come on” in counterpoint to Pharell’s chorus and this the closest we’ve had to a “Harder, faster, stronger” moment so far. Destined to be a festival fave. Nick DeCosemo

07
'Touch' feat Paul Williams

This is a surreal trip that channels the cartoon theatrics of Fantasia, the sound of a swing band on a Caribbean cruise ship, gospel choirs, pastoral psychedelia and a Beatles-esque chorus that goes “If love is the answer, hold on”. An incredible arrangement, like scanning radio airwaves while flying on acid. Seb Wheeler

Strap in. ‘Touch’ is Daft Punk’s ‘Bohemiam Rhapsody’ or ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’; an OTT number with five acts that goes from the reaches of space through horn sections, Shaft-like guitars and sci-fi sound effects. The intro alone is 1min 45seconds. There’s laser sounds, nice strings and even a bloody child choir. A vast track that sounds like a Broadway production condensed. Nick Stevenson

08
'Get Lucky' feat Nile Rodgers and Pharrell

You’ve all heard this and you all know that this is the song of summer 2013. “We’re up all night to get lucky” will be sung at festivals, raves and afterparties the world over, the epitome of 21st century pop and an anthem that will bring a new generation of party people together. Seb Wheeler

09
'Beyond' feat Paul Williams

‘Beyond’ sounds a lot like Nate Dogg and Warren G’s ‘Regulate’, which is no bad thing. The intro sounds like a Disney film is starting, with a slice of Bond dramatics in its strings. The lyrics are about the existential world beyond oceans and mountains – a land beyond love. No mention of an East-side motel. Nick Stevenson

A grand anthemic opening provides a huge sound before dropping into a Balearic disco chiller. The vocoder that’s graced the whole album appears again but this time against cascading synths that scream funk. Forget what you think future disco is, this is it. Jeremy Abbott

10
'Motherboard'

All scatter-funk and percussion-laced with soft keys, a huge 70s string cascade drops this track into a world of intricate drumming and acoustic guitar, built on a muted 4/4 bassline that rolls beautifully underneath. This is a departure. More Tron-esque, but with the drummer from Paul Simon’s ’50 Ways To Leave Your Lover’ letting loose. Then comes a sudden spookiness, as wet splats fly everywhere and a thunderstorm opens up. It’s raining in Bladerunner town! Four minutes in and the robot arpeggiations are back turning this all super-sci-fi before a whopping break returns. Interestingly, the drummer feels like the soloist here, but this is a track I can’t wait to hear again. Especially in the rain. Phil Dudman

11
'Fragments Of Time' feat Todd Edwards

Todd Edwards is best known for the cut-up editing you’ll know from numerous garage classics and Daft Punk’s ‘Face To Face’. But on this track there isn’t any of his remix wizardry, it’s just him singing over cowboy-like guitars. His vocals are about the time he’s spent with Daft Punk creating the track itself. He perhaps gives away too much by singing “our only plan is to improvise”, which might explain why this track falls flat compared to the rest of the album. Sorry Todd; this might have worked better if you made it into "gments-Of-me-Ti-Frag-ts-ts" in your edit suite. Nick Stevenson

Those expecting a ‘Face To Face’-style banger will be very disappointed. Those with a more open mind will also be disappointed. There’s none of Todd’s trademark production style here, just a drab country-pop song in which his vocal part sounds incredible bland. 100 per cent let down. Seb Wheeler

12
'Doin’ It Right' feat Panda Bear

Panda Bear brings the most modern touch to the party, putting together a low-slung house jam built from a tremendous 808 rhythm that flits between full and half time. Stark, ice cold and pretty damn heavy, ‘Doin’ It Right’ is laced with more hedonistic poetry as a soaring vocal sings “If you lose your mind tonight, then you know the magic’s right”. Probably my favourite tune on here after the epicness that is ‘Touch’. Seb Wheeler

A clear stand-out track and with a half-time opening, it’s almost dubby. The android rumbling of "Everyone will be dancing" forewarns the listener and drives the track while Panda Bear provides some giant vocals. Light and airy synths are introduced halfway through to make this a fantastic, understated ballad. Nick Stevenson

13
'Contact' feat DJ Falcon

Another track like ‘Touch’ that is epic and possibly built for a headphone experience or an IMAX short film. It’s intro starts with an astronaut describing something out in space: “It’s definitely not a particle nearby, its rotating way out in the distance – there’s something out there.” Big, dare I say Justice-y, organs parp out and a tone reminiscent of Kavinsky’s work surrounds big drum solos, ‘Aerodynamic’-like electric guitars and a huge build that feels like your face is entering light speed. It’s very exciting and a fitting ending to an exhilarating album you’ll keep going back to. Nick Stevenson

Album closer ‘Contact’ is one hell of an ending to one hell of a journey. A crackled voice begins the track, it could be Neil Armstrong or someone reporting back to planet earth. That would make sense as the remainder of the song takes you through meandering synths, hectic drum fills and crashing cymbals. At times it’s rocky, at times it sounds like Tron but at 4.50m it’s a raucous comedown. Dark and gritty synths build up like Apollo 11 until a mish-mash of feedback ends the album. Jeremy Abbott
