"Lets Talk Abt Anita Baker's Cover Of 'Lately'"

She took Tyrese's song and made it hers

1st time I heard it I didn't even realize it was Tyrese's song

Imo her version is much better than his.

Just like Marvin took Gladys Knight's "heard it through the grapevine," Whitney took Dolly's "I'll always love you," and Chaka Khan took Prince's "I feel for you" and made those records their own, I think the same can be said abt Anita's cover of 'Lately.'

only thing i agree on is that i couldn't tell what it was at first.

i think it's awful and pales in comparison to the original version.

and this is coming from an Anita Baker stan/Tyrese "hater".

Contemporary R&B song that could've been sung by Neyo, Trey Songz, or Joe, but imo Anita Baker's version sounded like classic 'Anita Baker' and a song that could've been on any of her CDs post 'Rapture.'

It was certainly the first one I actually bought... after that I went back and got the others (including Songstress, which was hard as hell to find in those days).

But in retrospect... Yes, I do feel it signaled the beginning of a decline.

I still listen to "Talk To Me" all the time, though.

this....

>... Yes, I do feel it signaled the beginning
>of a decline.

is different tonally than.....

"fell off two albums after Rapture" (the original statement)

the latter implies that composition WAS the decline, the first could be taken a peak and everything after was of lower quality (similar to something I call "Hotter than July" Syndrome)

As an entire project i think Compositions fares pretty well comparatively - especially in light of the prevailing trends and plastic, new-jack-swing-ish sound of what was out at the time.

yes the two releases after WERE lesser than the best she had done but I think some of *that* might be folks getting bored with her sound (and the long layoffs in between)

All that soft jazzy flavor doesn't fit that song... needs more staccato and more airy, haunting
instruments like it already had in the Tyrese version

I love the music she chose from this song, didn't try and duplicate the original...it sounds like a classic Anita Baker song, a song that sounds like it could've gone on 'Giving you the best that I got' or even 'Rhythm of love'

Her vocals alone are better than Tyrese's, more soulful and jazzy

To each his own though

check out line. i bet tyrese had to have cpr done because tyrese and music aren't exacrly memorable.

now there is unsung, however in his case just unseen. his voice was cool and he was at best a 3rd tier act.

i don't blame Anita Baker though because her taking one of his songs would be like Steve Harvey taking a Bill Bellamy joke and unless you knew it, you wouldn't lose no sleep.

for the record i respect tyrese and bill bellamy however nobody aside from die hard fans listens twice.

imo anita baker outta do the Thom Bell songbook.

so now its scraping the bottom of the barrel. nobody is going to waste there time giving her tracks and her being all out of tune and tired. she had a good run, however nobody has checked for her in years and she is digging out under the crates.

Tyrese? what next covering a Nick Cannon song?

and that Tyrese re-made it in 99 with a modern groove.

First time, maybe ever, that I've heard an older artist remake a 10+ year old song, and give it an older feel than the original. Some Jazzed out remakes are similar, but not to this extent.

It's interesting as hell, I'll say. I for sure prefer Tyrese's version, but Anita's is cool if I can see it as a different song and not a "remake" which leads to the whole "which one is better?" argument.
