Yeah...I honestly haven't followed Prince in ages. He looks like someone's kookoo out-of-it uncle playing super longdead music.

naw that garbage was wack and boring. Prince ain't shown no Growth as a Artist in so long it ain't even funny.

that mess might have worked back in 83, played out in 93 and then downright tribute show act thereafter.

that screwdriver performance was about a thousand times better than the boring version they released online

but i'll also say this - he comes off as the antithesis of hip. he's trying so hard... :/

i hope he someday learns how to age less self-consciously in every sense of the word. we don't need more guitar solo faces, absurd gesticulations, or goofy clothing. I'd almost rather he'd start pulling a Bob Dylan: just show up, sit on a stool, and play. The jumping and the flailing just don't fit him anymore, and that's okay.

Probably be better for it.

Nah, he's in shape and he plays electric guitar. An electric guitarist is 'sposed to move and groove standing up with the faces etc. That is what is meant to be.

Only thing Prince needs to do is make sure he spends excessive amounts of time wah-wahing on a wah pedal like there's no tomorrow. THAT'S what is definitely needed to complete what an in-shape electric soul-funk-rock electric guitarist is 'sposed to be up there doing.

esp. since Prince got a drummer playing double-bass drum kit. Gotta wah-wah it up it up in that scenario.

edit: another thing that needs to be said is that in Rock&Roll, there's always has to be an appreciation for the "just tossed-off"/caricature type of performance. Meaning, not everything in Rock&Roll is supposed to be a 5 star "perfect" "everything is on-point" type of deal. Some records or performances have to have that: "just crashing and burning in a careless half-way effort" thing.

Jimi gave plenty of those type of performances, so did the Doors and Nirvana and some say Led Zep's "The song remains the same" movie captured them barely up to their standards. That's what rock is. Sometimes in rock, a 3 star or 2 and a half star record is more "rock" than a 4 or 5 star record, 'cause Rock is supposed to be about throwing out some "not so perfect junk" sometimes.

Like Mitch Mitchell of the Experience said the song "The Stars that play with laughing sam's dice" was a crap song, yet I bet some people think that song is probably one of Jimi's most "rock" songs, because it is so "crash and burn".

I think I understand what you're saying and I largely agree. I really wouldn't place these performances in that same sphere...

have you ever seen a Prince show?

b/c he does that in his shows. there's almost always a portion of the show where he sits on a stool and plays acoustic guitar. or sits at a piano and plays. no frills, no jumping around, no band. just him, the instrument, the songs and the audience.

and when that's over he gets up and works it the hell out w/the full band backing again.

but if he spent the entire show doing that i'd be bored for 3 hrs. he's not a Folk act. LOL

fuck you.

lol, hopefully i've been around here long enough that you know i've seen dude multiple times. i know he always has that section, and that's cool.

the bob dylan quip was an intentional exaggeration - my point, more than anything, is that the older he gets, the more it all looks ridiculous. i especially dislike it when he's in rock mode - it feels especially fake because he's trying so hard to make it look sincere.

he still has the energy and the charisma, i'm not saying he needs to literally sit in a chair for a performance. but i'd probably pay more attention these days if he took half the energy he spends on doing those dumb facial contortions when he's playing the guitar, and invested that energy in - um, writing better music.

And I completely recognize that this comment is, um, ageist... but I think in this case, it's completely appropriate.

but if folks like it, then cool - and I'd still shell out the dough to see him again if I had the chance.

he seems to be wanting to do a fun thing with some energy. I didn't see him acting sincere or anything like that. He seemed to do the sincere thing with the song and video "Dolphin" from way back - I wasn't too into the serious vibe on that.

He's throwing some stuff out there in a style he's highly capable of rocking. Focusing on making unique individual stand-alone songs would slow down the fun and energy. Ripping through some caricaturish energized funk rock (hopefully wah-wahed all the way out) obviously can get him and the audience going - with less "...eh" factor of one vastly different song after the other.

He needs to be sustaining a mood and that seems like what Prince has finally realized.

I found the performance to be fairly enjoyable but oddly uninspiring... and borderline corny.

I was scared to say it here, though... and really, there's no point in saying it unless one is trying to troll.

It is what it is. If it is not what you're into, then drive on.

Not hating... just stating.

I figure I've made enough Prince posts (though admittedly not in a long time) and keep out of these discussions enough to not be a mere troll...

but I'll also admit that I've been feeling a bit more snarky about Prince lately... so whatever.

ain't nothing sadder than Prince fans overdosing on watered purple koolaid that tastes more like crystal with no delight.

his band suck 1)

his vocals are horror and bull 2)

and this turkey use to bring it and have something, but that was 25-30 years back. 3)

screwdriver was a Lenny Kravitz lounge karoke routine 4)

bambi was ok, his playing was cool, however vocally he was horror and bull, turkey started pulling a bob dylan thing around the 2nd verse. he sounded off and that band was off. 5)

i felt for Kirk, because nobody should mess with your instrument. Prince outta be lucky that wasn't the old Apollo and the sandman didn't toss him, that band and that rug on his head up in the air. 6)

nothing more embarassing them seeing a Relic still thinking they are happening. 7)

Prince vocally now sounds more constipated than Ben Harper, except at least Harper is comfortable in his music skin. 8)

Negro please!

Prince was never on Michael Jackson's level. neva ever.

Michael Jackson didn't have to showboat because well he was the standard.

Prince past age 30 never wrote a better song than "stranger in moscow"

matter of fact in the real world Prince is seen as a yesteryear relic who use to be happening.

Prince can't touch no R.Kelly on creativity. R.Kelly brought back more acts and helped more younger ones.

Kellz is over in Africa ripping the stages up. he ain't thinking about some busted wanna be Rev Al Sharpton meets Hugh Hefner played out Huggie Bear with a broke no charlie's angels Beckys.

in truth R.Kelly could bring Prince back in R&B.

The cognitive dissonance in you drives you..motivates you...from a psychological standpoint, it's actually awesome to see it happen.

The SNL performance has not aged well, it came off as corny with three dancing black chicks, with nappy hair schtick, and all those faces he made, like come on Prince that shit was not all that electric, and it was so nice of him just to lay his guitar down all soft and sweet.

He looks so old, I mean did you see those wrinkles on his fingers?

And that Orange Steve Harvey suit? WTF was he thinking when he got out of his bed. Guess he was not.

in pure monetary terms, it's about a ~$4k guitar, but Kirk's also given interviews stating it's emotional importance to him, which goes beyond simple money and replacement value. It's just a douche move to bash anyone elses guitar, regardless if it's a shitbox from Walmart or whatever. You don't know what that instrument means to the owner. Shows how totally up his own ass and clueless Prince is.

he wanted an autograph, Prince gave him one, accident or on purpose, we will never truly know, but what we do know Prince is an iconic figure and Captain Kirk is that guy that played in a beer commercial, and has kids with Bikes

to say that Prince is clueless is absurd

but it was Ok and cool with how rick James, James Brown treated a young Prince?

And his hair was a cross between first season George Jefferson and Florence Johnston.

Screwdriver was a nice sound rock song that I would have liked in the 80's. The live version's better than the non-live version on Youtube.

Bambi was a little too double bass'd out for me.

But - to quote Chevy Chase - he's streets ahead of a lot of current rock.

And he doesn't really look old - even in HD. He's either got a great makeup artist or he's a 54 year old who looks better than most 40 year olds.

I'd certainly see him in concert - but I would be afraid that he'd ask to borrow my car if we happened to meet somewhere.

(13) Similarly, please refrain from starting a different post on the same topic someone had before you. EX: Five threads about the Mos Def album is a no-no and they will be deleted. If there is already one, stick with that one. Chances are, you are not the first to hear a breaking news story and not the first one to post about it either. there was nothing about it that made me feel like I had to rush out to see him again. Last time I saw him was Musicology and having been to a handful of shows before that it was good but the thrill of it was gone then. I respect him working with a new band because honestly I think NPG s what killed his vibe. Right around 1999 when he poured on the "Las Vegas" flourishes and "2001" interludes it all became a vegas stage show to me which just wasn't as exciting. To be fair haven't been to an after show in ages so maybe he's still killing those, but I get the feeling those have toned down as well and so I'm thankful that I got to see him when I did, and wish him the best at continuing to be fulfilled in his musical endeavors.

"Guitar's in the shop. I have an emotional attachment to that guitar because of the look, sound, and feel of the thing. I recorded music with it that I have an attachment to. Once it's fixed I will have a deeper appreciation for it. I'm glad for the dialogue that this has created. About celebrity, hero worship, losing yourself in performance, human decency and art itself. If art is supposed to invoke emotion and reaction, then the throwing of the guitar was the master stroke. He apologized, shook my hand and said he'd take care of it. Even after he did that I STILL asked him to sign it (he says he hasn't signed anything since the 70's) so I was guilty for being blinded by my love for the music that has passed through him"-Kirk Douglas FB post

I'm not sure if that whole idea of him throwing it to somebody hoping they would catch it but the cord was too short and let it not go as far as he thought it was going to go was true or not but at least Prince know his ass had to apologize a pay for the damage was needed.

What I want to know is why has he stopped signing things for the past 30 years, does he think everybody is out to cash in on him?

not signing stuff. I have an 'autograph' from him and his NPG band at the time.

they were in atl for an in-store performance when they were promoting the symbol album. Of course, he signed it with the symbol instead of his actual name, but yeah.

His guitar was smashed by the GOAT who rocked his performance and quite actually made that guitar sound better than it ever has.

Seriously if that was uninspired and 'corny' to you why not just change the channel next time you see Prince come on your TV? Because truthfully that's about as good as it gets with P now... and I ain't even into his rock shit like that. Being critical in and of itself doesn't have to be negative but the way some of y'all do this (and have been for close to a decade now) isn't doing anyone, including you, any good. Just chalk it up as Prince ain't for you and keep it moving... but this shit yall doing here is an incredible waste of time and energy. Being away from this place and only peaking in now and then has me realizing how desensitized I became to it when I was here every day... the shit just looks loony.

OKPers will tear that down and yet support Frank Ocean's untalented, gimmicky, cut and past vocal recording internet bullshit ass?

ridiculous.

One of the reasons this site is no longer considered innovative or cutting edge. Just a black hole of negativity.

Watched it with my daughter and she commented on how you could tell he was enjoying playing with those chicks... and also how he needed a new look he could age with and the fro and 70s style was perfect for that (seemed like he had on less makeup too)

We both dug it... a lot

Including the Dirty Mind era...
Including any tour any era - not only did it match the record it surpassed it.

true Prince heads know I'm right and we also know we are entering a seriously exciting time for him.

First backing band yet with no keys or backing vocals..
a true indication of the types of songs he'll be playing.
He killed it.

Anyone say anything less than that - they have an agenda. lol.

on TV of all times.

My opinion is if you cannot see that then you may not know what you are talking about. Simple. That or you have an agenda.

Bitchmade is questioning others why they hold that opinion & or offer them instructions on how to approach it as if someone views you as some sort of higher power or informed figure , when that is clearly not the case.

Thanks but no thanks.

Question: Should I point out how this contradicts the replies you posted 5 minutes ago or should I just keep quiet and let the heavy irony do the talking?

Answer: Doesn't matter since you're gonna edit 50 times in the next 3 minutes anyway

I'm really trying to understand why so many people are getting upset that a small handful of other people don't have the same opinion.

I mean, the vast majority here seem to love the performance and that is awesome for them... But the fact that two or three other people say they didn't love ruins your enjoyment THAT much?

Makes me feel like y'all maybe DIDN'T love it as much as you claim... maybe y'all WANT to love it, maybe you're forcing yourself to believe you loved it... and dissenting voices are ruining the delusion.

I dunno, really...

I made my opinion clear. I dug Bambi, didn't dig Screwdriver. I have no problem whatsoever with others saying they didn't dig the performance.

My alice through the looking glass statement was referring to a certain poster...

You can't just randomly apply to every instance of someone having a different opinion from you.

Or... I mean, you can. But it's kinda silly.

it's relevant to explain why i've said it seems to me like you're trolling in here.

criticisms/complaints/et al that seem to come from a place of just not liking Prince (w/o admitting that's what's up) seem like trolling to me.

fuck you.

I think there's a few things going on....

Personally, I find you to be one of the more insightful posters on this here board...

And while I don't agree with your entire premise on all things Prince, it's all good---different strokes, homie....

The issue (for me) was the co-signing of a flawed statement made about the actual Prince performance (the BigFunk post concerning P needing to go ageless and play on a stool....When Prince does that type of shit every gig....)

Your co-signing of that point (the whole P is making faces and trying to be cool when he plays guitar...'why can't he be more like Dylan' stuff) was puzzling...

But more than that, it's your co-signing of Maxx that seems to be at the heart of the matter, at least for me...lol (Hence Black's Koch Brothers reference...)

Maxx is now simply a mega Troll who while will drop a gem from time to time cannot be taken seriously when it comes to Prince ....

So you see, it's not as simple as you not being able to state your opinion on a message board...

But at least we got a new nickname out of it.....Maxxx Romney? I likes....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Are you making stuff up again, murph?

As for me agreeing with the notion that Prince should sit on a stool... It's like zealotry has completely short-circuited you guys' sarcasm mechanisms.

thebigfunk said he *ALMOST* wishes Prince would do like Dylan... and it was pretty clear (I thought) that he was using hyperbole to project a point.

The fact that you guys keep referring to it in humorless outrage (and then blowing up a minor crack that maxxx--I mean mistermaxxx who always says shit like this about everyone--made about his hair)... I ain't gonna lie, I'm actually slightly scared at the self-righteous stannery.

Mek mi lef dis oonoo place, sah.

I'm talking OVERALL...Past posting when it comes to Maxx...the whole "he does have a point" thing that you have done with Maxx in past Prince discussions...The only point Maxx has with Prince is that he's obsessed with him...lol

That's not making anything up...And I wasn't making anything up the first time....

I stand by my first post...I took your co-signing of BigFunk's post (again...dude was not trolling or saying anything HORRIBLE...He was just wrong in terms of the facts....) to be trivial...

And I still do....

I can feel it over coming me just the little bit I've been in here... I'm sorry but the shit ain't healthy.

Nobody is saying someone has to love everything the same way... but if it's more than trolling then it's really about expectations. There are tons of artists that I don't feel but then you'll never see me spending time talking or posting about them... why should I? When there is an artist I care about and he/she doesn't live up to the expectations I have for him then I'll chime in. With an established icon like Prince we pretty much know going in what we're looking for... when cats start picking apart the very foundation of what makes him who he is and what pleases his fans, then they're going in with failure as an almost certainty... and outside of masturbating their keys ain't doing shit... and adds nothing to the discourse.

But as long as this has been going on I know it ain't changing right here today in this post... so I'm not going to waste any more of my time talkin about it.

I still love yall though

Peace

Popular artists discussions are bound to go over the deep end if they reach 50+ posts. IMO the most valuable posts are usually under 50 replies or are carried out over months not hours. Not sure when but at somepoint I found myself just backing away from posts over 50+ if I wasn't already active, and pulling out completely if it hit 100, because there's really slim chance of new information coming from them. I still lurk posts like these often for a laugh, which is why I'm here now though it wasn't really funny at all.

But reading the post unless you're referring to how maxxx set the tone with the first reply (which I don't think fits because most just read that as maxxx being maxx and KIM), the tone you're talking about was started in response to The Big Funk, who made a pretty reasonable reply based on his perspective. Not being the popular opinion Afkap let him know he wasn't alone, and *that* i think opened the floodgates for the Prince defender's to start going in like it was just trolling. But it wasn't. Quite the opposite actually. Afkap is Afkap so he's going to respond in kind, and eventually... but I digress. The point being the tone you're talking about comes from both sides, not just those with the negative outlook 'trolling'. Evidenced by from what I can see it all starting with TBF who is not a troll. Shit like you he barely posts at all these days and I can imagine reactions like this would keep him from doing so more in the future.

i agree w/you.

i was confused by bigfunk's complaint that Prince won't just sit on a stool and sing his songs like Bob Dylan does...b/c homie knows Prince and Prince's schtick...and he should know P ain't that type of performer. except when he DOES actually sit on a stool or piano bench and sing. as he does in, like, every big concert he's put on since i dunno when.

he's since clarified the stance a bit. but that initial reply was a head-scratcher.

but i brought that up to say comments/complaints like that just make me figure the commenter just isn't into Prince. which is fine. but then to keep harping on w/those kinds of comments seems like trolling.

fuck you.

or her attatchment to their gear..let alone their most prized possession instrument that they love creating music on. And the notion that some people in this post are making..that Kirk should of been geeked out or humble because a legend such as Prince broke his guitar after a great show is absurd.

Kirk had a right at that time to be pissed, because in the grand scheme of things it was foul. But the situation worked itself out and thats the end of it.

I love Prince..he's one of my fav artists of all time..but that doesnt excuse him for being in the wrong.

But I've played trumpet for damn near 20 years and own a custom Yamaha trumpet that was not cheap by any means. If Miles Davis had played it and then smashed it, I'd be geeked as hell. He just increased the value immensely, even in its broken state. Now if some dude from a smooth jazz ensemble played and smashed it I'd be pissed.

Really evident the Prince fans that aren't musicians fumbling over themselves to excuse this as either 1) typical Prince being Prince stuff and 2) a justified reaction for someone asking for an autograph as if EITHER of those reasons are really excusable or justifiable for a human to act to another human. He isn't walking on water. He isn't immortal. If Kirk saw red and picked that guitar up and smashed it over the little thing's head, he would bleed just like anyone else.

For fuck's sake...

I don't care WHO in the world did it - but if someone borrowed my bass and then damaged it by throwing it like that we'd have a PROBLEM. If you're a pro musician your axe is everything to you, regardless of the cost. I don't care if it's replaced, you may not have the same connection to it. I don't care if it's "fixed"...the intonation and the action may never be the same. And people are saying that he should be happy about it because it gives him a story??? wtf???

Bottom line.....

1. It was a dick thing for P to do, rock God, or not...

2. It was strange for Kirk to keep Tweeting and posting about his disappointment over Prince throwing his guitar around without failing to mention (early on) that dude apologized to him, shook his hand, and promised to take care of the bill....

That's the thing that people on here aren't understanding...it's not about money or the value of the guitar, or the cost of replacement or anything like that. As a musician many will have a special connection with an instrument and the way that it plays. It may be a certain comfort level that is there. Damage like that, even when repaired will completely change the instrument. Maybe there were certain dead spots on the neck that he loved because he could mute the strings a certain way. Maybe the intonation was slightly off in a way that he really liked. Maybe the action was just right on it, and it had taken years of setups to get it just the way he liked. All of this could be gone with damage like that, even when it is "repaired" (which depending on the damage could mean a replacement neck which makes it a completely different instrument, or wood that needs to be glued which will change the way it resonates, and at the minimum it will have thrown off his setup.

It does matter...Because Kirk acted like P smashed his guitar, pissed on his face and did the moonwalk while whistling "Head"...

Again...PRINCE WAS A DICK FOR THROWING THE GUITAR....He should have apologized (as he did)....

But Kirk led folks to believe that the Midget was on some "fuck yo couch, nigga" shit, when that wasn't the case...

just a tired ole pamperd relic turkey who Rick James said it best needs a good ole fashion hood beat down.

i wish Kirk could have gotten on stage and destroyed all those instruments on stage from those two lousey peformances and the microphone as well since prince and his band were making alot of noise that stunk.

prince needed to be thrown in the air for that garbage he is putting musically.

i know one thing he would have never done that to Rick James's instrument or a Stone city band member's instrument or he and that busted fro would have parted.

how to Properly use them, because Street Songs>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Prince's albums from 78-81 easily.

RIck sent a note and showed him to really funk it up and out.

Prince stole RIck's stage routine and hair style back in 79 before he jacked the thin lizzy look.

anyway Prince might be charged with an Asault for throwing that guitar in the air, because it could have hit somebody.

damaging property and assault with a weapon.

Prince outta be barred from Late Night network tv and ordered to take anger management class.

i mean really if we went there then suddenly prince ain't hardly so innocent.

i'm sure you know he loves them under 18 girls? turkeys outta leave kellz alone because prince is heel to heel with him.

and jill jones out of her mouth had Prince as Chris Brown to her Rhianna but i forgot Prince walks on air.

Rick James never went to perform and destroyed somebody else;s instrument.

but ill blame this on prince being senile and delusional that he still matters to get away with said move

He did a lot worse....

Of course, none ^^^^ of this matters when it comes to Prince being a dick and tossing Kirk's guitar like a Frisbee...And as I've stated I'm glad the Midget apologized and came out of pocket with that bread...

But I don't want to hear anything from YOU talking about an artist being disrespectful...Not when you praise Rick as the expense of u know who...

As much as we BOTH dig and respect Rick, u and I know dude was the KING of disrespect...Ain't nothing personal about putting your hands on friends just for the hell of it...Rick woke up out of the bed out-of-pocket....lol

Thats the whole problem with all the idiots in this post. Most never played and instrument let alone have a valuable instrument that fuels their craft, means of living etc, artform etc what have you. So you cant see the importance of an artists knowing his instrument and it being broken.

Like the poster that said after me. The intonation of the guitar..the certain sweet spots on a guitar could all be ruined and the guitar might never feel the same to Kirk..regardless if its fixed or not. Some of you people cant comprehend that in the slightest.

People have absolutely no idea at the amount of respect that has to be there for a musician to even let someone else play his instrument, regardless of who that person is. And when someone DOES let you use an instrument the amount of care and respect that needs to be shown to it.

It would be one thing if there was an accident and Prince dropped the axe, but apologized and said he'd take care of it. But throwing a guitar while on stage isn't an accident, it's a purposeful act that showed complete disrespect to another musician that was so gracious to him in letting him use his axe.

I also want to point out, that Kirk may or may not have had a special connection to that guitar. I don't know. I've have basses over the years that I really had a connection with and would have been completely heartbroken over something like this happening, and I've also had some basses that I looked at as a tool and as long as it was fixed/replaced I would be fine. A guitar/bass is an instrument made of wood and for some models, each instrument is going to have it's own unique voice that can't be replicated, while others (even some high end guitars) are very consistent in their build so a replacement will sound and feel exactly the same. But when you're borrowing someone else's instrument you should treat it with the highest level of respect regardless.

Prince has thrown guitars in the air for close to 10 years,Kirk should have known better and what to expect. We don't know if it was on purpose or not , again that is pure supablackspeculation.

Kirk should have known better out of respect to not ask Prince for autograph, but he didn't.

Well, if you give to a bass player that you have seen is wreckless with his own shit, why would you think he would treat your bass any different? If you seen a cat in his shows throw basses in the air after a solo, what would you expect? Common sense would tell anyone , hey may be a chance my bass could get smashed.

You can't compare a human life to a fucking piece of fucking wood made by some mexicans or some 10 year old asian kids, oh no that's right maybe we can compare it to some bikes like Kirk did

Most posters on this board have some sort of instrument that is of value, that fuels their craft, etc, and posters understand that

so don't pop up in hear with that shit

My final thoughts; if smashing a guitar is the worst this guy can do over the course of a 40 year career, i'll take it. Asshole move, def, was it a hit an run, DUI, manslaughter, pedi type shit...strung out on drugs etc...Kirk needs to stop whining though. coming off badly for him esp if dude apologized and said he'd take care of it..

He is whining , if Prince comes of as ass for throwing it, he is coming off as a simp for whining publicly on twitter.. that's girl shit. If he mad, don't play tomorrow as a sign of protest at Carnegie hall. I'd respect that

oh it can happen because it ain't like Prince performing on your show is good for your ratings these days, its more like why you got that relic on tv? and then again Prince was on late, late night turkey is so played out he can't even be on a good late night show in prime time.

and by them sucking he can blame the guitar being off on somebody else.

smart move on Prince's part if he sucks which he did then blame the guitar not being his.

if only he can say the same about that wig rug on his head.

If you did, you'd realize that Roots drum arrangements are typically considerably more complex than anything Prince requires.

listening to you talk about rocknroll music is just about the same as asking a middle-aged classic rock fan what he thinks of hip hop. He might dig Snoop Dogg and Eminem but he really doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

That was foul as hell.

Brother P was waaayyyy out of pocket for that shit.

There is no damn excuse. Not at all.

Unless he is personally pissed at the Roots for something we don't even know about.

Is he pissed that so much of his unreleased shit has been leaked via this site?? I dunno.

But man....that's the only logical reason i can think of. That it was on purpose.

But whatever......that shit was madd foul. Just effin foul as phuck.

Princeguy reviews:

"No pretentiousness.

No pompous re-interpretations.

Sometimes, a movie is just a movie. You work hard for your money.

The decision is yours.

See and enjoy what YOU like."
