What the blood claaat ???

I was there.  Show went off about 2 hours late, but was very
good.  I could swear there was a bassist behind the
curtain...not sure where the bass line was coming from unless
it was on track; it could have been D'Angelo's left hand, but
it was a bit too precise for keys.  Questlove had headphones
on...might have been playing off beats, might have been studio
monitors...unsure.

D seemed to be in great spirits...a lot of smiling, talking to
the audience.  And he and Quest had great interplay.  D had 4
keyboards (or so)...the Rhodes, some Yamaha, something that
had a good clav sound, but don't think it was original
equipment.

Set-wise, started out with Sly's "Let Me Have It
All", then sequed to a track I was unfamiliar with.  Took
on "You Caught Me Smilin'" and then Womack's
"Woman's Gotta Have It".  Another cool point was
their cover of Prince's "New Position" (2nd track
"Parade") moving into a faster version of
"Africa".  I remember reading that Quest modelled
some of the Voodoo drums on that track from Parade's "I
Wonder U".

Also, remember "The Line" and closed with
"Lady" - a bit more uptempo than the original.  I'm
sure someone will post the full set list...and one hopes they
do a bunch of these in NY and elsewhere to get the juices
flowing.

It was good to see Alan Leeds and Ginny running around the
place trying to make sure everything was in order.

I personally am uninterested in his music, but I'm excited for those who DO care about it. I hope it's all they dreamed of for these past 12 years and I commend them, for their faith has stayed stronger than mine.

Probably more the latter, since I think I said "I am uninterested in his music."

I mean, I am uninterested on the fan level... I don't care to listen to him. My tastes have evolved since 1995 and D'Angelo (even at his best) rarely offers much to hold my interest.

But i *am* interested in D'Angelo as a case study, as a mythology, as a career model... Yeah, I will admit that I am fascinated by that. I mean, stories about people who have the world in their hands and then piss it all away due to human frailty is always going to be a compelling narrative.

So yeah... I do care about that. I do like following the story. And I do like taking cheap shots--not so much at D himself, but more at his fans/stans. That is fun, yes, and I don't regard it as a misuse of my time (at least not more so than just about ANY significant time spent on a message board in general is).

But the music itself? I can take it or leave it... most likely, I'd leave it.

More power to him, though.

I think the celebratory tone over people having issues like that....as well as the lack of empathy shown in those type of situations says more about you than it would the person who is under scrutiny.....

If I ever celebrated anything, it was the vindication of having my prognoses and predictions being proven true after everybody shouted me down and called me a hater when I innocently pointed out that D might be heading down the wrong course.

However, I never, ever celebrated any actual misfortune befalling D'Angelo. I ain't got that much schadenfreude in me.

for someone who is in the music business in some form...that type of attitude is surely not one that would breed success...I'm just being honest with you... There is a toxicity to people who have that type of attitude and that's not condusive for building business relationships...

No, I don't feel that at all.

This all started with me--who was at the time a MAJOR D'Angelo fan--observing with great concern that I felt our boy was running his career and life in a direction that was destructive. And other D'angelo fans attacked me for it, again and again.

I never forced anyone to accept my views... I just spoke my piece and they got mad. and then after that, they kept on throwing subliminals at me... Hell, YOU did it too; when D was doing the comeback shows in Europe, instead of you to just enjoy the shit, you started throwing some sneaky shade, talking about how the "naysayers" are mad and making reference to shit that I had said.

So don't act all innocent here like "people are just digging music" and I'm coming in to harass them lol

I never told anybody not to like D'Angelo. I never told anybody they were wrong for liking D'Angelo.

What I did do was offer my own observations and opinions, which evidently didn't sit well with those who had chosen to believe that D was or is the modern messiah of soul music.

I understand that, though... there's a lot of people here whose opinions sometimes upset me too. You know how I usually deal with it? I avoid their posts when I see they're posting about some shit that's gonna annoy me.

When D got arrested with the hooker, I didn't have word one to say about it. Likewise, when he had the accident, I had no comment about it. When he gained a bunch of weight, i didn't ridicule him for it like most other people did. My commentary on D tends to be focused on music and/or performance.

I guess I did say a bunch of times how disappointed and disgusted I was over the drugs. I still am, though.

Honestly it kinda is.

He's definitely made allusions to his career stasis in these live shows since he returned to the stage.

Picking a song with the hook 'Tell Me If You Still Care About Me' is not an accident, nor was him letting the crowd sing the 'How Does It Feel?' part on the solo piano version of Untitled in his early shows while he responds with ad-lib fills answering them.

There's nods, winks and/or a feeling-out process in play on all that stuff.

I won't really consider his return official until he actually you know, puts out an album for the first time since the Clinton Administration.

However, I can say on this recording he sounds as good vocally as he ever has & the covers might as well be the route he takes onstage until there's actually new material to do.

At least unlike Lauryn he actually sounds good when he's out there.

which for my money was never fully realized although it sounded good for what they were doing -

is right here. This show is by far my favorite D'angelo performance to date and it's exactly what I suggested over the summer - D'angelo simply sitting down and playing keys. Quest added to that is the superpunch. What a great job.

Mother/Son was the show stealer. He absolutely killed it.
Tell Me If U Still Care another show stealer (if not just for the second verse).
Africa - beautiful.
You Caught Me Smiling Again - best cover anyone has ever done of that song including D'angelo.

All around great job - to hate on this you would have to have an agenda.

yes. loved the looseness. the funk. especially on the sly stuff. way more honest and straightforward than the bonnaroo gig which felt a bit forced.

looked like he thoroughly enjoyed this himself. and that left hand is nice btw. smooth bass work. especially that walking bass in 'really love'.

this is the gig I hoped to see in europe last year. he tried to do a voodoo tour part 2 but he shouldn't in my opinion. he's not that dude anymore.

this was some raw shit. no polish. mistakes here and there. but i can imagine this is not for everyone.

hope okayplayer will release the whole set on video. or at least bless us with a soundboard recording. would be amazing.

(in Low Down Loretta Brown mode), Wendy & Lisa, Mike Elizando on bass, Questo on drums & Doyle Bramhall on guitar at a Pre-Grammy Jam Session a few years back when they did it.......that would be musical perfection.

Doyle couldn't quite handle the lead vocal on that, I was kinda wishing they'd have let Erykah do it but she was great on the chorus.

I'm still looking for the clip of 'Our Love Has Died', that's the joint I really wanted to hear out of the lineup when I saw it.

Hard to imagine that cut without horns but I'd love to hear it.
