"is Good Kid, Maad City the first undeniable classic album in a while."
Sun Feb-24-13 05:21 PM by forgivenphoenix

Yes, I know. Another, Kendrick Lamar post. The Lesson needs one of these like we used to need more Nas v. Jay-Z posts, but nonetheless.

Is Good Kid, Maad City, the first album in the past maybe 10 years (since Get Rich or Die Trying) that is a Classic album. or better said an album that is revered so dearly and so universally that to not like it speaks to being out of touch with good hip-hop?

I'm sorry, but that Kanye album was not that good. At all. People cared more about the theatrics than the actual music.

It was basically a rapper with an overblown budget going crazy in the studio while refreshing pitchfork's "Best New Music" page.

But of course, since Kanye came out with a decent album we're gonna hype it as if it's the second coming of christ.

Meanwhile, Curren$y and DJ Quik dropped better albums in 2010. I'LL HOLLA.

than you are with the album itself. You legit, in your reply, spent just as much time talking about how people reacted to it or hyped it up than saying you didn't like the album itself.

Kanye's album had a couple of really high highs but it didn't resonate like say Graduation did. Too pretentious for my tastes. I think that the story behind the album was better than the album itself was. In other words the process behind creating it (the whole "locked in the studio" theme) sounded really cool but I just wish it was better than it was.

Now that we're talking about it tho I'ma revisit it today to confirm those feelings.

over and over. i go a week or so and feel the urge to pop it in again.

reminds me of how i felt when i first heard Madvillainy. i didn't know about it when i dropped and i only bought because i really loved the cover, but man that album had me hooked.

Kendrick's joint i bootlegged and played the shit so much i had to go buy it and add it to my collection.

is it a classic? we'll see, but so far so good IMO

You never know when you're gonna unintentionally drop a comedic gem like totally misunderstanding the meaning behind a top 40 song or revealing your wife leaves you at home to go clubbing.

But, if you want me and other people on this board to stop being condescending, you should probably stop saying such stupid shit.

Also, I posted that message in a thread. Hurt feelings direct messages are your area of expertise.

You. Are. Hillarious!!!!!!

I disagree. Honestly I feel like discussions like this are only good for a good laugh. We are all different people so it's only natural that we would have different opinions. I think it's good to discuss music and all that, but there are some people who's musical taste are going to be so different that there really is no point.

I say it's dope, you say it's wack. Cool.

Kool On & Other Side are my two favorite cuts off undun, an album I enjoy (far more than the album preceeding it), however pretending that bland-ass backwards-told story about 'Redford' has more 'flavor' than a fully developed first-person three-dimensional narrative like GKMC is funny to me.

like, by an almost dissapointing degree in retrospect because I was pretty high on undun initially & obviously wouldn't have been here if I wasn't a Roots fan.

But compared to Kendrick's album undun is a bit of a dull tool.

When I first copped it, I was convinced it was a classic. It's starting to have a candy-like effect on me, now. I can barely sit through some of the songs.

I'll say that Marcberg lasted a lot longer in my CD player (months) than this one (3ish weeks)

but it's in a lot of company over the past few years for me. perhaps because I'm younger and this is sort of "my sound" or something.

If Kendrick was from Brooklyn and had one Kev Brown or Apollo Brown track on his album, you'd be praising it.

I'm sorry to say...

Or at the very least, just say "it aint for me, I prefer that old boom bap" type response.

At least own your bias.

You know I love Oddisee, but his album isn't seeing Kendrick at all.

Especially on lyrics, flow, and DEFINITELY creativity.

Just say you like throwback, and leave it at that.

this nigga keeps talking about lyricism like kendrick raps like 2Chainz or French Montana, god damn

what beats are generic? the first half of Maad City, which still SLAPS! or the second half, which bangs harder than 80% of all music released last year

this nigga thought swimming pools was a pro drinking song, talkin' bout concepts and lyricism... smdh

and I usually speak with caution about this album but I generally believe that the reason why it is so rare is that it feels for the first time in ages, an album with "corporate/blog/etc" co-signing and what sounds like an actual budget that does not sound like it made concessions to a bottom line as much as it sounds like a concept executed from start to finish... without all the trappings of the "stuck in the critics' corner" (i.e. a wide, intended audience anticipated and ate it up).

this from an artist who did NOT exist in the 1990s.

hopefully, as time goes on, it's a harbinger for what eventually emerges.

but no genre has fallen further commercially (and with a vote of faith) than hip-hop IMO. the 2000s were essentially the "housing bubble" of its lifetime.

there isn't even really a contemporary 'rock' station in most major cities these days.

I think it COULD be but it's not cut and dry. It's not a album that you can just listen to whenever you want. Gotta be in the mood for it (NTTATWWT). I love the album, but I don't play it very often now. I think it's great album that maybe people will look back on as a classic but for now it's just a great album.

Enjoy having a great album. Everyone doesn't get to have that.

Definitely arguable, though.

I think the definition of a classic includes impact and classic songs.

The cultural impact is pretty undeniable, IMO. The wave it made throughout the year, how it got great sales without seeming to concede artistically, the critical acclaim and respect from other musicians, and what the album did for Kendrick's reputation. Impact is huge.

But does it have any classic songs? I think "Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst" has an argument, but are the other songs from the album going to go in the genre's cannon of definitive records? I'm not sure.

I hope it becomes a classic, though. I still listen to it; just bumped it yesterday.

like a couple of people in this thread have said i was basically done with the album after bout a week or two of bumping it
yet i still kind of feel like it was one of the best albums since *insert recent good album here*
i'm leaning more towards it being a good album that is easily inflated because of the landscape it was released in
so few good rap albums are released now days anything that is even remotely good is going to be hailed as classic even though it's really not

4-5 times...I get the concepts, it's more about voice/execution....a specific example...on the track with drake, when did Kendrick stop rhyming, and Drake begin? Non-distinct, generic sounding MC's....and then the beats, just not feeling most of them...point being, if the music does not capture you, then the message/concept means little to nothing....

2. You claim the album has no substance but now you're saying it has a clear message.

3. Your citing Poetic Justice as everything that wrong with the album yet it's a song you said you liked earlier.

...you are making HUGE assumptions....

1. Where did you get the idea that you know what I am "thinking"...you got special powers? I am saying the sound, the repetitive "drink, smoke, drink, smoke" ish in that robotic voice does not appeal to me, and SOUNDS generic/corny...overall, even outside of this one track, don't like the ish duke does with his voice(s)...

2. Is it possible for something to have a message, yet not be executed in a way that appeals to everyone? At it's root, this is suppose to be entertainment right? The problem, IMO, is the SOUND (hooks, voice(s),whiny delivery, beats) which is part of the execution...Props for the attempt at a concept album, just the execution....The substance is dwarfed by the SOUND...

3. Never said "Poetic Justice" was an example of everything that was wrong with the project, said the beat was greatness, the MC's sound generic, and again, it's hard for me personally to hear where Kendrick stops rhyming, and Drake begins....they sound GENERIC, like a lot of so called MC's today...but thats another topic....

Oh, and it's You're...lol...see darkies can speak proper...lol...

It's hard to actually figure out what you're thinking because you contradict yourself with every other reply.

First, you said the album lacked substance. Now, you're saying it does have substance but your problem is with his voice. Whenever somebody has challenged you on one of your observations, you contradict yourself or don't answer the question. You said it sounded like generic radio bullshit yet when Bombastic asked you to specifically say what other songs on the radio this album sounded like, you got didn't respond. Grow some balls.

>3. Never said "Poetic Justice" was an example of everything

Kendrick and Drake don't sound alike no matter how much you want them to.

>Oh, and it's You're...lol...see darkies can speak
>proper...lol...

Actually, "your" works in this case too. Also, if you have such a problem talking about rap with white people, you might want to get off a Roots message board.

...you have wayyyyy to much time on your hands...do I have to explain each detail to you? Don't have time to get into EXACTLY what SPECIFIC tracks on the radio SOUND LIKE what was done on said project, all you gotta do is tune into your local Hip Hop station...lol...if you like it, enjoy it, it's ok....you have my personal stamp of approval to enjoy...Is that what you are looking for? Some type of ok, cause you stay on my dick....and to clarify, the question by the other poster was what stations I was referring to, not specific tracks...I wish Kendrick Lamar nothing but the best...and I love all white people, even condescending, slightly warped ones who look to educate us less than sophisticated darkies on the culture/music we created...

you mad? don't be...it's ok...

cause you'll always have cats that disagree just to disagree. but i think most folks would look at you crazy if you didn't think GKMC was that good. same w/ MBDTF.

so that's "undeniable" enough.

pretty much

I don't like MBDTF as much as the general population seems too. And thats ok. Has the potential to go down as a classic

I like this album allot(I think it is way better than MBDTF) and lots of people seem to like it allot too. It also has the potential to go down as a classic

only time will tell

It's also the same handful of people posting the negative shit over and over. People tend to overlook that. If you could limit everyone to a single post and get all the people who still like it to come back and say so, you'd have a truer look at how everyone actually feels.

For the record I think it was the second best album of last year, after Killer Mike, and definitely a very good album. With some age, maybe even a classic.

classic stands the test of time. i listened to this album non-stop for a few weeks but now i'm kind of tired of it. I don't feel much like listening to it. i'd rather listen to Section 80 since I haven't listened to that in a while. Still, I don't feel like I will go back to GKMC in a few years like I would with GTODT.

I think the album is really really good. A smart creative hip hop album in an era that seems to focus on and reward cheap shit.

I'd like to address the detractors:

The music: People pick on it...but it's really just a backdrop for the lyrics. do the people who dislike the music on it also dislike Organized Noise, Ali Shaheed Muhammed, etc.? To me...the music is more quiet, mellow, kinda understated...and that's OK. I think musically "Money Trees", "Sing about me" are really great.

"His funny voices": Eminem raps in funny voices. If you listen...Kendricks voices are characters....in the second part of "Maad City" when he starts "Fresh outta school..." he is clearly rapping from a different character's perspective. That's different than simply a "funny voice". If you don't like it, fine. But at least give him credit for doing something different.

The concept: I think it's great. The dude who thought the whole record was booze and gang banging...is really missing out. The whole tone of the album is really dark and sad...showing that the gang shit is just a dead end.

Is it a classic? Maybe not....For as much as I like the songs I like, I think "Backseat Freestyle", "Real" and "Poetic Justice" are subpar and don't fit in with the theme that well. The rest of the album however, is great, moving (dare I say) intelligent hip hop.

but that doesnt mean I can play it everyday and not get tired of it. If you put it down for 3 months or a year and threw it on one day would you play it straight through?

I think the answer will define if its a classic or not.

...and that Spidey kid is flopping around like a fish out of water.

Oh, and one more thing. I like Kanye but MBTF was ehhh.... that shit was not THAT good.

I feel what people are saying with R.A.P music as far as it being good, or, even better than GKMC, but you have to factor in cultural impact as well. Kendrick has had a relatively big cultural impact, while no one outside of rap circles has even heard R.A.P music. There are classic albums that I think suck but that doesn't make them not a classic. I think the blueprint is hella average but I still can't deny that it's a classic.

That said we can't judge GKMC's cultural impact yet but I think it is going in that direction.

like, he had the big production budget, but in terms of what it was going for nothing was too far off from League of Starz or the dudes that work on stuff for Skeme, Dom Kennedy, etc. I'm not a huge fan of Dom Kennedy but his pop appeal seems undeniable. If this album can lead to a rise of that smoothed out, not-so-trap sound that west coast mixtape rappers have been cultivating for a while, then it's impact will be way less debatable. But if it still sounds...basically like a hardcore Drake album (or whatever) in two years...maybe the sales are just a fluke.

Or, more simply, if the other Black Hippies (other than probably Jay Rock) can get a bigger share of the market, that would be enough too.

I don't personally weigh "classic" by penetration, but it's definitely hard to deny years where Nelly's Country Grammar or 50's Get Rich was all that mattered. Of most recent albums, Thug Motivation is about the only zeitgeist one I could get with as not just a cultural classic, but a personal one as well (though I've probably heard Get Rich front to back, like, three times as much, because that was what 50 Cent meant to middle school and high school life).
