nobody cares about Benny Goodman. he was tough back in the day, but he ain't at the food table of the best jazz cats.

after ARRUh its Maurice White, Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Chaka Khan.

real CHI TOwn Folks ride with R. Kells.

Kellz has had the longer run and being the king of R&B counts. nobody else from the chi rocks a crown.

Quincy Jones will tell you Arruh rules

>He has been wildly successful in nearly every form of
>American popular music.

when i was a kid, my first exposure to quincy jones was
seeing the logo for his production company on OTW and thriller.
later on, i noticed the same logo on my parents brothers johnson lp's

i never gave it much thought after that.

then, when ludacris did the song for Austin Powers
soundtrack, i saw quincy jones in the video.
i wondered why he was there, so i went to the Internet.

that's when i found out he was responsible for the Austin Powers theme song,
and i was amazed how something written so long ago
could sound so fresh and new.

that's when i started digging into his catalogue
and found "this is how i feel about jazz" (a vinyl record that i drove through an ice storm to get) and "soul bossa nostra."

the more i researched, the more i found.

television and film scores, jazz records,
the works.

i realized i'd heard a lot of his work,
but i just didn't know it was him.
i suspect i am not in the minority.

it's easy to miss how prolific he is.
i didn't realize it until ludacris samples one of his songs.

this is 'musical talent' which isn't necessarily the same as having loads of credits and accolades
not trying to discredit him, that's crazy to even try, but there's no way it's him as a clear-cut answer

Q is one of the greatest of all time in:

- composition
- arranging
- bandleading
- production
- scoring

And was a pretty damned good instrumentalist to top it all off.

And lol at your attitude of "well he just has a lot of awards." Yeah. He has 27 Grammies. For good reason.

I didn't say he had 'just a lot of awards'
I said accolades and musical talent don't always go hand in hand so it isn't the same
and never use Grammy counts to show a person's ability to make music
too much goes into the selection process that has nothing to do with music for it to warrant any merit

and as for this part:

> - composition

wouldn't crack the top ten even if we're talking jazz

> - arranging

excellent arranger

> - bandleading

wouldn't crack top ten bandleaders either

> - production

if we're talking most successful, definitely, but skill for skill there's a debate to be had there

> - scoring

his scores are so good it's stupid, love them all except that fucking 5o Cent movie

How about record sales? I'm sure that's just as invalid as Grammy awards to you, but really, you're just deciding what criteria suits your argument anyway.

>too much goes into the selection process that has nothing to
>do with music for it to warrant any merit

Yeah, it was all politics, those 79 nominations spanning five decades. I mean, I'm still pissed at Jethro Tull winning best metal, so I feel you.

>and as for this part:

And this is the silly part. The poll asked for "best musical talent." Did not specify "best songwriter." Did not specify "best bandleader." But here you are breaking it down...yeah, man. I grant you songwriting was probably the weakest part of his game. Of course, several of compositions are in the Real Book and have become standards, which is a hell of an achievement by itself, but no, he's not top ten.

But it isn't "best songwriter," which is why you evaluating him in individual categories is dumb. Name another guy from Chicago or Seattle or fuck it wherever you like whose musical talent was so complete and wide-ranging, who succeeded in every musical outlet available to him, and mastered most of them.

Total package? Q.

since when does the number of Grammys/record sales determine musical talent?
give me an example of that and I'll back off, and I don't mean just naming niggas with a lot of Grammys either

he could have 179 nominations this year, doesn't matter because we're not talking about who has the most trophies
make a thread for that if that's something you wish to talk about

I won't argue with Curtis...but Sam Cooke is an absolute legend and I can't see him not being number 1.

In response to Reply # 46

He came before the time of the "albums".

But give me his greatest hits, and his live at Harlem square and live at the copa over anything the artists above have created.

And I love a lot of their work as well.

But Sam is a top 10 artist of all-time to me.
