It gets questionable if you place all of those three in the bottom tier of your 20.

Now this doesn't mean you don't like rap music or aren't a hip-hop head, but you're likely more attracted to the other elements than to rapping itself. You like rapping which accessorizes hot beats, or your perception of 'street culture', or even da bitches that get down to it. But rapping itself, you could probably take or leave.

there are guys who spit just as well and in a way that speaks to the listener where they are comfortable....instead of the artists own "bubble"

i dig a number of the artists listed in that post, but the idea that someone doesn't love *rapping* because they're not into aesop rock, busdriver or other underground avant-garde acts is absurd.

most people who listen to lots of rap appreciate good rapping. it's not a coincidence that most of the modern greats--jigga, nas, TI, eminem, wayne--are (or were) exceptionally good at doing it.

there's a grip of folk in there. isolating the most obscure is an injustice.

i always wished TI made a record with Organized Noize, or more cohesive albums, because ALL his lp work is hit or miss IMO

i listen to alot of weirdo shit. but all my boys dont. so i know cats who grew up listening to rakim, kool g, krs, slick rick etc and can quote classic verses verbatim who don't know company flow, deltron 3030, freestyle fellowship etc. they know divine styler because the time he dropped it was only but so many videos on tv but i digress....

my point was that you could be a fan of lyricism and never even been exposed to those albums...not to mention if you did the production on some of the records is so far out there is people who been listening to the "normal" stuff its just not going to resonate with.

here very simply, because as evidence by your Alchemist post in the Lesson, you struggle to acknolwedge things more complicated than your little "thinkers" box. their origin (south central) and experience (jail time) has everything to do with how and what THEY CHOSE to rap about. they had the same background all the "relateable" street rappers of their eras did, but they CHOSE to rap differently and about different shit.

but the rest I haven't heard or don't cut it, Co.Flow comes close but I preferred Can.Ox.


I have a TERRIBLE fucking memory, though. The only two rap songs I've ever memorized were Boyz-n-the-Hood (long forgotten, and mostly thanks to that Dynamite Hack cover that my white friends and I thought was hilarious in middle school so it got played over.andover) and Jay-Z's P.S.A., which I still recite to myself wen I'm iPodless and waiting for something pretty much anywhere in public.


But I haven't even memorized Beatles or Stevie lyrics and I've been listening to them for 15-20 years.


I'm definitely more moved by the music, but the rap music is what moves me. The idea of the rap as instrument, maybe.
