"Isn't Kanye kinda over?"

Let's run down the list:

1. Music has declined in quality drastically.

2. Dates the wackest sperm bank in the game.

3. People don't even discuss his music, songs, performances any more: the only thing people care about are his feather masks, egotistical rants and his new "fake crazy" routine.

4. MDTBF or whatever was like 50% good. The Throne sucked, as did Cruel Summer.

I dunno.

I'm not really checking for him any more.

Reply #20 sums up why this post is silly (it's all steeped in the poster's opinion, yet
presented as some kind of universal truth).

But your notion that people can't articulate themselves actually applies to this very post.
Look at his 1-4 and notice that none of it is backed up by anything.

>1. Music has declined in quality drastically.

How so? What does he mean by this? He doesn't even say.

>2. Dates the wackest sperm bank in the game.

This ain't got a motherfuckin thing to do with music. You wanna talk about how cute lil wayne is?.... etc.

>3. People don't even discuss his music, songs, performances any more:
>the only thing people care about are his feather masks, egotistical
>rants and his new "fake crazy" routine.

That's just false.

>4. MDTBF or whatever was like 50% good. The Throne sucked, as did
>Cruel Summer.

Again, just his opinion... and one that he seems to be in the minority on as much as the shit was
talked about *especially* here and the great reviews it got.

That what this board is about. Discussing musical opinions. Obviously they will vary. Why reply with "lol"?

I agree with that. But what I saw was someone voicing an unpopular opinion about Kanye and people laughing at him. And this is my a surprise when considering the track record of who I replied to. That dude belongs on the Hot 97 board because the extent of his opinion is "whatever is popular"

Topic-wise, right about now, he's on par with Plies.

If he says "Murcialago" (or whatever the fuck) again, he could re-brand himself as a sleep aid.

I dunno. I don't think "Mercy" is in any way as good as anything off "College Dropout", but that's just me.

mbdtf and watch the throne were both well-received, with the first getting near-universal acclaim from the press

i don't think of cruel summer as a kanye album, but i can understand people not liking it. although the parts i enjoyed tended to have kanye involved, and the ones i didnt were comprised of the mediocre good artists (teyana taylor, travis scott, cyhi)

nothing really points to him being over in the near future, though he may be descending from his peak popularity

we all know he's never been one to shy away from publicity but he once remained in the headlines for his talent and controversy

now it's 100% gimmicks

ranting about niggas in paris not being song of the year

rocking an asap rocky halloween costume in birthday song video

knocking up a receptacle

True.

That was "set up" nicely.

I didn't think MBDTF was that great. "All of the lights" was ehhhh musically and lyrically. The song with Raekwon and Kid Cudi was probably the best moment on the album. "Devil in a Blue Dress" was a high point too.

Even his Gil Scott Heron thing was kinda meh and GSH is one of my favorite artists of all time.

that album was just well-executed album filler.
shit had like 1.5 tracks that could stand alone and they weren't even that good standing alone.

And it sold well.

Safe to say Kanye isn't "over". The 2nd half of Cruel Summer was wack as shit, but basically all the Kanye heavy tracks (Mercy, Clique, New God Flow, Clique) were great, his label-mates just suck.

who gives a fuck, quality doesn't dictate sales just like critics aren't an accurate barometer of how good an album is
especially today where critics are just niggers that champion what they like or do shit to seem hip

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/10/kanye-west-popularity-tanking-epoll_n_2442314.html

That being said, he sounds musically lazy. I love MBDTF for the ambitious stuff. A lot of filler on there though. And WTT I thought was good, but smacked of neither cat putting their all into it and just having fun. Which I actually respect. Songs off CRUEL SUMMER weren't terrible, but again... to me it sounds like he dropped a mixtape and made everyone pay for it like it was a disc.

Is he over? I don't think so. But I do think he needs to stop worryin' about fashion, and hunker down and make an album he cares about.

He really needs to put some real focus on another solo album where he's defining a new sound not hopping on an existing one.

his profile is so big that he could come back with a classic and erase all that obviously
but at this point he's wait and see status with me

musically at least i *get* why he's fallen off
seems to have other interests in his life at this point, cool
the most surprising thing to me has been how shitty G.O.O.D music has been
that 2chainz album was one of the most disappointing debuts in a minute relative to the buzz/mixtapes
and i'm not really excited about anything pusha T is doing
and these aren't memph bleek type artists...these are dudes who should be bonafide stars EASY

In response to Reply # 29

I don't personally think it is, but it's not uncommon to believe it's his best work.

Cruel Summer was a disappointment, but the tracks with Kanye were good to great. The shit that was trash on that album was the music without Kanye's involvement. He makes great music, but has horrible tastes when it comes to other people's music. Only explanation for him to sign Big Sean and 2Chainz.

Watch The Throne was another good album. It wasn't as great as people wanted it to be, but there's some great songs on there.

I won't say I'm not worried Kanye's peaked and is now on his downfall, but I felt that way with 808s and he came back after that with an incredible album (though you think it sucked, I know). So I'm going to wait until his next solo album or two before I write off an artist who already has 4 GREAT solo albums in just 5 tries.

Call me a stan, but I'm here talking about the MUSIC. I like it, PLENTY of people do. People complain about Kanye stans but they are the same people in every post about Kanye talking about how much he sucks. If you don't like the music, move on.

is when you say "as usual the stans come in" can hold the same truth if you replace "stan" with "hater". You call out stans as if people who say they like Kanye or defend the fact that he isn't "over" are automatically stans, and then cling to the "obviously stans are all up in here" argument instead of giving facts that say Kanye is over.

two things:
-I never said that they're automatically stans for saying that, I just said his stans get incredibly emotional about his music and the way it's perceived by other people, a lot like Kaney himself
-my first post in this thread said I don't think he's over just because he's making bad music that he's not putting his heart into, but I guess you guys overlooked that so you could jump me

Similar to what Jay-Z became, although Kanye's being talked about for cornier reasons than Jay who was talked about as a businessman and entrepreneur. Kanye, like Jay-Z, has become bigger than the genre. Shit, Lady Gaga was huge a few years ago and the majority of the gossip was over her ludicrous outfits and performances, not the actual music she made.

That being said, seemingly everything Kanye is doing outside of music is a complete and utter failure.

Bizarro world or opposite land...

yup talk of his outfits, teenage temper tantrums, and fucking/impregnating a beautiful/vapid woman dominate his identity

BUT

uhmm people still love the music. I'm sure we could pull up a post and some folks will claim he has four classics and how great ANY of his albums are from a musical stand point. if YOU don't like that's fine. share where you feel his music fails. but A WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE love THE MUSIC

usual Kanye haters Maxx and Bammer are in the building, the later which refuses to take his L after he thought MBDTF would flop than made claims that the record company bought half of those first week sales, lol

but Kanye will forever be some one who is equally adored and hated, period.

people stop what they're doing when its anything kanye related.

most of the industry are mega-fans of dude and are highly influenced by him, sure in the last 2 years he's been riding the pop-rap wave, but the songs hes been making have been the BIGGEST songs of the year (Mercy last year, NIP the year before).

I really think people are delusional some times on here simply because they don't check for someone, they make overarching assumptions that no one else is. That's fine if you don't like his music anymore, I can totally see why that's justified because he doesn't make anywhere near the same style that he used to, but to say that he's over is absolutely laughable. Just wait till the first pipsqueak of info comes out about his 6th solo album, thats all motherfuckers will talk about for a month, watch.

Just because the same people that didn't like him in 2007 still don't like him in 2013 all of a sudden his career is over.

Yeah, it's not just industry people - it's regular fans, too. The Watch The Throne tour was crazy. And even though Cruel Summer didn't do great numbers as an album, it *still* had the biggest song of the year.

Bur you're right - when Kanye drops, everybody listens.

Remember when artists took atleast 3 years to complete an album?
Sure, Ye has been active every year involved in garbage (imo), but thats because we get bored too easily. Theyre trynna feed our parasitic culture.
Personally, I liked Ye better in '04 and '05. I spoke with him a few times back.
I dunno if the new Ye would be as approachable.
I like the old Ye better (production wise too).

Because I'm not someone else.

It's kinda sad. Since 2003 he's been the artist I've been most excited to hear new music from. While I appreciated the way he made MBDPF (you know, locking people in the studio with all them rules and all that shit), it came out real pretentious to me.

And the rest of the shit you said is on point, too.

He always had an ego, but it seems to be that when his ego/strong personality started to overshadow and creep into his music (which is what I mean when I mention the pretentiousness) the quality of the product suffered for it. When he was more understated, and more humble (for lack of a better term) his music was much better and easier to stomach I think.

I obviously still do and always will check for his shit, I'm just not nearly as excited as I was when Graduation dropped. Which was one of those days I literally set aside 3 hours to sit by myself in a room and zone out to the album over and over.

If you said "past prime" or "has made his best music"...I still might not agree, but I can see an argument being made for that.

If you said "his content is wack now" I'd agree.

If you said "he's gone commercial, although he was commercial without having to make commercial bullshit to become big" I'd agree.

But done? Finished? Even close to being done? Shit.

never even heard the birthday song until i entered this post. searched for it on youtube just now, and i feel incredibly justified in ignoring him over the past two years.

the days where he had something interesting to say in his music seems like a distant memory now. wake me up when child rebel soldier drops something.

i only enjoyed about half of fantasy, but can appreciate it for what it is. i thought 808s was pretty flawed, but liked that he was trying to express himself in a fairly novel way. graduation had nice production, but i felt that was the album he started to run out of things to say. and i thought lr and dropout were very good.

so to recap, i feel kanye's been slipping the past 3 solo albums, and i've made excuses to buy them regardless. it just so happens that in the last two years, he's lost my interest altogether.
